    Critical success factors determining economic health of firms producing wooden single-family houses2017In: Arkitektur N, ISSN 1504-7628Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Firms in the Swedish industry for wooden single-family houses operate on a highly competitive market. Products are relatively homogenous, easily substitutional and firms mainly compete by prices. Since 2005, the accumulated market share for the five largest firms decreased from 53 % to 39 %, whilst the number of firms in the industry increased by almost 60 %. In addition to these internal issues on industry structure, construction firms are generally sensitive to external impacts, like the current changes in bank loan policy for the customer. Nonetheless, the number of produced single-family houses in Sweden increased by almost 130 % since 2012. Contributing to reducing the existing housing shortage in Sweden, wooden single-family house producers play an important role.

    However, earlier studies show that around 40 % of these firms are economically distressed, or in a situation, where they need to take appropriate strategic action to avoid economic distress in the near future. Yet, what actions are appropriate?

    This study is aiming at identifying current critical success factors determining economic health of Swedish firms producing wooden single-family houses. By means of these factors, conclusions about appropriate strategic actions might be drawn to avoid economic distress. Data from the 2015 annual reports of 50 relevant firms were collected and processed by means of the Altman’s Z´-score model and regression analysis.

    The results show that two factors accumulate to 99 % explanatory power (adj. R2) of financial health: (1) the manufacturing capacity of the firms’ assets and (2) the firms’ equity ratio. These are the current critical success factors for economic health of Swedish firms producing single-family houses. (1) matches todays’ debate about automated prefabrication and (2) can be seen as the way of financing such assets. Thus, these issues should guide the strategic agenda of firms in the industry.

    On the Swedish market for single-family houses, wood traditionally dominates with around 90 % market share. Due to the economic crisis, the number of prefabricated wooden single-family houses decreased from about 12 100 units in 2007 to 4 800 units in 2012. Firms in the industry struggled with a 60 % decrease of order intake. These firms compete with relatively low margins, and many faced economic losses. Such losses negatively affect the firms’ equity ratio, describing the share of assets that are financed by own capital. This negative effect defines the firms’ long-term ability to pay its depths. The longer such an effect lasts, the more it threatens the firms’ future, potentially leading to bankruptcy.

    This study is aiming at describing the development of the equity ratio from 2010 to 2014 for 52 Swedish firms producing wooden single-family houses. This will be done by collecting and analyzing those firms’ annual reports and the required financial numbers.

    The results show on the one hand how an average equity ratio for the whole industry developed within the chosen five-year period. On the other hand, the development of each firm’s equity ratio within that period is mapped, indicating, which firms potentially might face problems if no appropriate actions will be taken.

    Abstract [en]

    After the economic downfall and declining orders for wooden single-family houses in the past, order quantities on the Swedish market are turning upwards again. Yet, production costs for the firms are too high, often due to an inefficient production with too long lead-times. Further, a lot of capital is tied up in stock, leading to a relatively low rate of inventory turnover. Many firms face such production-related bottlenecks that affect profitability in a negative way. At the same time, firms want to increase their production capacity since the market is gaining strength.

    In this study, principles and methods of the LEAN production philosophy were applied on a case firm, where the value stream was mapped to explore bottlenecks in the production of a wooden single-family house and to calculate production efficiency. By means of the DuPont scheme for economic analysis, the firm's return on assets was analyzed.

    Data reveal how stock utilization, production and material flow, capacity and consequently return on capital are affected by a suboptimal facility planning. Changes in the current facility layout are suggested and measurements performed to exploit the direct effects of such changes and show their potential.

    Results show that with the suggested changes, stock could be reduced by 37 %, value-adding space increased by 13 % and production capacity by 50 %. By implementing the suggestions, production efficiency could increase between 10.3 % and 230 % and the firms return on assets could improve from 2.5 % to 37.8 %, which corresponds to an increase of profitability by around 1 506 %.

    Syftet med studien är att öka förståelsen för hur de interna beställningarna av material påverkar en producerande verksamheten och hur det går att effektivisera. Detta har lett till rekommendationer relaterat till uppdraget som var att effektivisera interna beställningar. Ett måltillstånd definierades till ”Reducera materialförseningar genom ett beställningssystem som är strukturerat, systematiserat, enkelt att arbeta i och förser lagret med rätt information i rätt tid”. Måltillståndet togs fram med hjälp av analys av empirin, för att skapa en grund till dem dokumenterade problemen och lösningarna som senare beskrivs.

    Abstract [en]

    The automotive industry is going through a radical transformation from combustion engines to fully electric propulsion, aiming at improving key performance indicators related to efficiency, environmental sustainability and economic competitiveness. In this transition period, it is important to continue the innovation of combustion engines for e.g. plug-in hybrid vehicles. This led Volvo Cars to pursue radically new manufacturing processes such as Friction Stir Welding (FSW). The work presented in this paper is a case study whereby feasibility of using FSW to join a reinforcement element into the aluminium casted Cylinder Block was studied. The complex geometry of the joint required a flexible five-axis manipulator, i.e. an industrial robot, as well as advanced process control, i.e. temperature feedback control, in order to maintain a consistent weld quality throughout the whole component. The process was successfully demonstrated in a lab environment and offers a cost-efficient solution while maintaining the durability and higher efficiency. The outcome of this study shows the great potential of implementing the FSW process in combination with High Pressure Die Casted components, such a Cylinder Block.

    Abstract [en]

    Friction stir welding (FSW) is a reliable joining technology with a wide industrial uptake. However, several fundamentals of the process such as the temperature inside the stirred zone of the weld and its influence on mechanical properties, are not yet fully understood. This paper shows a method for accurate temperature measurements in multiple locations around the tool, to identify the location of the peak temperature, the temperature variations between the advancing and the retreating side of the tool and its relation to the tool geometry. Both standardised thermocouples in the FSW tool and the novel “tool-workpiece thermocouple” method were used to record temperatures.

    Bead-on-plate welds in 20 mm thickness AA6082-T6 were produced while the temperatures were measured in three locations on the FSW tool: at the shoulder outer diameter, at the transition from shoulder to probe and at the probe tip. It was found that the hottest point in the stirred zone was 607 °C and was located at the transition between the shoulder and probe, on the retreating-trailing side of the tool. The lowest temperature was found at the probe tip on the retreating-leading side of the tool.

    The results offer a better understanding of the temperature distribution around a FSW tool. The method presented can be applied to verification of thermal simulation models, tool design optimization, quality assurance and temperature feedback control.

    infasningen av gods till terminalen. Analysmodellen håller arbetet inom ramarna och

    det är även där teori och empiri jämförs.

    För att schemat ska bli så bra som möjligt så skall arbetet innan och före schemat

    också analyseras så att alla parametrar tas med i beräkningen.

    The fatigue life time of welded components is the dominant factor at the design of mechanical and automotive structures and components where fatigue failure has a crucial outcome in use of fillet welded structures and it commences mostly from the weld toe and propagate to the parent material or even to the weld root area. Fillet welds are the imperative type of weld used in many industries because of the geometry and fabrication cost of the structure.

    The main objective of this research is to increase the fatigue life of welded components using the Effective Notch Stress Method (ENSM). Different radius and angle combinations are used and tested using the Palmgren-Miner’s damage accumulation method and from this testing, life at different combinations can be estimated.

    Since this research is based on parametric Finite Element Analysis - FEA, a 2-D finite element model is used to evaluate fillet weld joints fatigue life time. In this model the throat thickness of the fillet weld determines the leg length and its impact on the fatigue life time of the weld. The fatigue life at the weld toe differs from the throat thickness although it is affected from it. The variations made in the weld toe using different radius and angles gives a significant improvement in fatigue life and also increases the strength of the weld root. The Effective Notch Stress Method (ENSM) is used to estimate the fatigue life of the weld structures where the weld toe is easily accessible. This method can also be used to determine the fatigue strength which in turn can be useful in real time applications.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this project was to design, construct and develop a space frame for a pneumatically driven vehicle for one driver through several simulations. The purpose of the vehicle was to compete in the ‘XI. International Aventics Pneumobile Competition’. This event is an opportunity for students to develop and improve their skills in different fields such as mechanical engineering, telemetry and electronics building and team working. However, this thesis topic will be focused mainly on the aspects of mechanical engineer based on the process of before and after the construction. This process was also examined through a number of races occurred during the competition. Specifically, the chassis that has been initially designed was developed through the whole process with purpose of lowering the mass while maintaining the strength. The study has produced two results - a real life model, which has participated in the competition and an improved model of the frame which was carried out in Autodesk Inventor and ADAMS software. Throughout the process the frame was remodeled and resulted with the weight loss from 48.3 kg to 31.9kg, while the strength was maintained.

    Continuous improvements are an integral part for the development of everyday life. These improvements do not only ascertain financial gain but also lessening the environmental impact.

    The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the design process and the decisions required to achieve an optimal design with respect to weight reduction, while retaining the required strength. The study will also investigate the choice of material. This will be done through material and design studies, along with strength calculations of the product in question.

    The conclusion from this study is that it is possible to save a certain percentage of the material used, while keeping the strength, form, fit and function intact. The material study provided with a recommendation of the zinc alloy ZA-8. It is an alloy with a good combination of great strength, low density and price.

    Studies have shown it is necessary for companies active in various industries to continuously, and cost-effectively, improve their product development process, in order to stay competitive and increase profitability. Existing improvement models, e.g. Plan Do Study Act (PDSA), Define Measure Analyse Improve Control (DMAIC), Identify Define Develop Optimize Verify (IDDOV), are either too general or too specific, and none incorporates improvement of information flows. Consequently, none is suitable for improving a product development process with respect to reliable information flows. Hence, the purpose of this study is to develop a model for systematically ensuring a reliable flow of information, by identifying and solving problem root-causes in the information flow. This ensures satisfied customers, reduced costs, and increased profits. Result of the study is a model and tool, tested empirically in a case company, proved suitable for streamlining product development processes, by ensuring a reliable flow of information. Application of the model identified three problems within the information flow: language barriers, vertical organization, and lack of suitable media for communication. Solutions to the problems has been concluded on through logical reasoning and together with recommendations provides a good indication of the positive effect on profitability, which a reliable flow of information within the product development process can have.

    Abstract [en]

    In an ever changeable and globalized world with new economic and global competitors competing for the same customers and resources, is increasing the pressure on organizations' competitiveness. In addition, organizations faces additional challenges due to an ever-growing amount of data and the ever-bigger challenge of analyzing that data and keeping the data secure. Successful companies are characterized by exploiting their intellectual capital in an efficient manner.[1], [2] Thus, the most valuable asset an organization has today has become its employees' knowledge. To enable this, there is a tool that supports easier handling and optimize the use of knowledge, which is knowledge management.[3]

    Based on the theoretical framework and careful review as well as analysis of interviews and observations resulted in six essential areas: structure, management, compensation, communication, trust and motivation.

    The analysis showed that the scientific articles and literature have different perspectives, different definitions and are based on different theories but the essence is that they all finally seems to arrive at the same result and conclusion, although with different viewpoints and perspectives. This is regardless of whether the focus is on management style, rewards or communication they all focus on the individual.

    The conclusion is that organizational culture affects knowledge management and dissemination of information, because of its direct impact on the individual. The largest and most important underlying factor why we choose to participate in improvement work or share knowledge is our motivation. Motivation is the reason for and the reason behind our actions.

    The recommendation is therefore a continued effort to provide employees with tools to better communicate and share knowledge. In addition, to further strengthen the motivation of employees an increased presence of management at the shop floor is recommended.

    Abstract [en]

    The goal of this thesis is to create a methodology that helps companies in the sawmill industry

    to improve their efficiency. The purpose the case study is to create a more efficient production

    process by improving the structure of the work through improvements in leadership,

    commitment and motivation. The methodology is tested in the case company and together

    with the selected empirical data l generates a situation analysis in order to facilitate detection

    and observation of factors that are essential to study to improve the production. The results of

    the methodology used in the case company led to several factors considered important for

    improved efficiency. The most relevant success factors are better quality in communication

    and leadership processes. Recommendations for the case company to succeed with the implementation

    of the relevant factors, is to induce motivation and highlight the purpose of the

    change, and introduce more openness between managers and workers. This will lead to an

    improved structure that will benefit the critical improvement factors.

    Examensarbete är ett arbete som ger möjligheter för studenter att använda sina kunskaper som har erhållits under tre års studier på maskiningenjörsprogramet. Arbetet är ett sammarbete mellan studenter på Linneuniversitetet i Växjö och Norden Machinery AB i Kalmar.Detta arbete introduceras med en inledning som innehåller en bakgrund, problemformulering, syfte, mål och avgränsningar. Bakgrunden beskriver allmänt påfyllningsmaskiner och påfyllningsmunstycken inom olika industrier. Därefter följer en problemformulering som beskriver vilka problem som kan förekomma vid påfyllning av vätskor med låg viskositet.Syfte med detta arbete är att designa ett nytt påfyllningsmunstycke som ska förebygga efterdropp vid påfyllning av vätskor med låg viskositet(Vattenliknande vätskor). Designen av ett nytt påfyllningsmunstycke kommer sedan att presenteras genom olika produktutvecklingssteg. Därefter beskrivs olika metoder som används för att samla in olika data genom intervju och litteraturstudier.Teori i detta arbete utgörs av hypoteser, antagande och satser. Teorin kommer även att beskriva en produktutvecklingsprocess som utgörs av olika produktutvecklingssteg, från en idé till färdig produkt. Efter teorin analyseras även hållbarhet och miljöpåverkan för det material som används för det nya påfyllningsmunstycket. Detta avsnitt beskriver materialets egenskaper, återvinningsprocess och hur material relateras till miljön och människan. Därefter följer ett empiri avsnitt som baserar sig på arbetets teori. Empirin beskriver genomförandet av produktutvecklingssteg för att kunna utveckla ett nytt påfyllningsmunstycke, från början till resultat.Resultat och analys beskriver slutprodukt som utförts genom empiri. Detta avsnitt presenterar även de produktidéer som har utvecklats under produktutvecklingsprocessen. Därefter analyseras slutprodukten för att se om det nya påfyllningsmunstycket har besvarat undersökningsfrågan. Arbetet avslutas med diskussion och slutsats, där beskrivs hur arbetet har gått och vilka hinder som har uppstått under arbetets gång.

    The IKEA sliding door system is widely employed on IKEA’s wardrobes. In view of the massive usage of it, any optimization for reducing production costs is crucial. This work attempts to develop a special static test rig for a component of IKEA’s sliding door system. It will be used to check the quality of the component in production. The simulation-driven design method will be used in the entire process. Therefore, before proceeding with the details of the test rig, the priority should be given to the simulation. In particular, the nonlinear finite element method (FEM) will be used to identify the break load of the studied component. Finite element models were created in ABAQUS/Standard. Four kinds of POM were used to define the model’s material properties. Meanwhile the compression experiment were also conducted. Finite element models were used to predict the load capacity and compare it with the experimental results. The closest prediction in relation to the test results was 2124N, merely 6N smaller than the experimental results, giving the proof of a good finite element analysis. Based on the results of simulations and compression tests, a proper test rig consisting of a pneumatic system and load cell was selected from four concepts. The air cylinder can provide 3175N when the supplied air is 0.7MPa, which is fully met the design requirements with reasonable price.

    Möjligheten att uppnå ett lönsamt och konkurrenskraftigt företag genom att tillämpa en strategi som förespråkar flexibilitet mot kund och ständig processförbättring mot kundens behov har blivit en allt mer väsentlig del på vägen mot framgång. Processerna ska generera högkvalitativa produkter och styras av motiverade och engagerade medarbetare. I följande studie har en process tillämpat mot mindre orderkvantiteter konstruerats för att öka Emballator Lagan Plasts flexibilitet mot kund och ge företaget tillfälle att öka sin årliga omsättning. Studien har formats utifrån problemformuleringen “Hur kan högre flexibilitet i produktion nås utan att öka produktionsresurserna?”. Målet med arbetet är att tillämpa en process som svarar på den potenitella kundgruppens behov, reducerar slöserier i form av lager och förflyttningar samt minskar ledtid. Utifrån genomförandet där arbetsmodellen “Förbättringskatan” användes alstrades följande resultat. En förbättrad process kan skapas genom att tillämpa en kundstyrd produktion där orden produceras i ett kontinuerligt flöde. Burk och kompatibelt lock ska sampackas i en kartong och packas med lika många burkar som lock. Det förbättrade tillståndet reducerar behovet av lager samt minskar ledtiden. De planeringspunkter som Förbättringskatan innehåller kan slutligen tillämpas av företaget vid framtida processförbättringar. Modellen möjliggör för kontinuerlig utveckling av organisationen där medarbetare får chans att förändra sitt arbete och involvera sig i förändringen mot kundens krav.

    Studien omfattar en undersökning kring kvalité inom en tjänsteorganisation där standardiserat arbetssätt analyseras. I nuläget saknas omfattande dokumenterade rutiner och arbetssätt. Syftet med studien är att undersöka om standardiserat arbetssätt påverkar en tjänsteorganisation och i så fall vilka faktorerna är. Målet är bland annat att ta fram en verksamhetsmanual som övergripande skildrar hur verksamheten ska styras och ledas. Studien avgränsas till avdelningen Internal Services inom IKEA of Sweden i Älmhult där intervjuer, enkäter samt observationer nyttjats för att skildra ett nuläge på deras befintliga arbetssätt. Resultatet visar att det existerar en viss form av standardiserat arbetssätt i det dagliga arbetet. Resultatet visar även att en högre grad av dokumentation gör det möjligt att skapa en högre standard och kvalité på tjänsterna samt att basera beslut på fakta. Studien belyser mängden faktorer som påverkar hur effektivt införandet av standardiserat arbetssätt blir. Baserat på studiens underlag har det modellerats fram ett förslag på verksamhetsmanual som avdelningen kan nyttja mot sina interna rutiner och processer.

    Utveckling av produkter enligt DFA kan öka effektiviteten i monteringsprocessen med avseende på tid, tillgänglighet, synlighet och kostnad. Syftet med arbetet är att undersöka möjligheterna i att utveckla en produkt baserat på åsikter och erfarenheter. Två delmål är etablerade till projektet där det första är att kartlägga monterings- och installationsprocesser. Andra delmålet är att generera förbättringsförslag för korgnodskonstruktionen. Via fallstudier av monterings- och installationsprocesser samt tidsanalyser identifierades tre problemområden till vilka samtliga ett förbättringskoncept genererats. Det genomfördes ytterligare en tidsanalys på förbättringsförslaget för att jämföra med dagens korgnodskonstruktion. Resultatet visar en minskning av den totala monteringstiden och för den totala installationstiden. Vidare visar resultatet en effektivitetsökning för förmontering och installation, däremot en minskad effektivitet för montering.

    In the trends of technical improvements and automatization is it important for companies to keep up with the developments to be competitive on the market. SwePart Transmissions AB is a company that manufacture and develop gearboxes for the currently growing robot arms industry and the main task with this study is to investigate how to apply condition based monitoring on a new gearbox from the company. The work considers vibration analysis and testing new ideas in the oil analysis field. The tests that were performed are based on measuring the difference in impedance or magnetic field due to the increasement of wear. The results of the tests are not clear. This thesis is the beginning of a big project and therefore lies the value of this work in the new ideas and suggestions for further work.

Vid tillverkning av planet-, sol-och ringhjul så kan inte exakt diameter erhållas, detta samt andra brister leder till ojämn lastfördelning när fler än tre planethjul används. Målet med arbetet var att ta fram ett koncept på en förinställning för planethjul i en planetväxel med koniska kugghjul, samt kostnadsuppskattning och monteringsanvisning för konceptet. Studien resulterade i att det kan finnas en lönsamhet för konceptet, vilket medför att vidare simulering och tester anses varar aktuellt.

    The market for renewable energy and an international power grid is constantly growing. This project has focused on the installation and protection methods for offshore power cables. Long distance cables over e.g. oceans and smaller distances within offshore wind farms.

    The focus is on three different materials for the protection task; concrete, cast iron and plastics. These materials have been evaluated in aspect to strength, life-length, reliability and environmental impact.

    Snapp products of Sweden AB have developed a cable protective pipe of polypropylene for offshore usage. This product and its opportunities are thoroughly investigated.

The main reason is to stay ahead of the competitors and continually improve the products to more competitive prices.The number of wheelchair users is continually increasing all over the world and the same increase occurs in Sweden. For this reason the Swedish social board stated The Swedish disability policy, which aim is to minimalize differences between people with disabilities and people without. One part, which is emphasized, is transportation. To reach independence, the possibility to drive a car and bring the wheelchair without assistance is of vital importance.This thesis consists of two main parts – theory and its application. The first part is mainly theory regarding a systematic engineering process as well as a part based on empirical research. It contains information related to the topic of the thesis, which are gathered through observation and interviews rather than acknowledged facts. The second one is the implementation of the theory during development of a wheelchair loading device, which are based on customer requirements.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the standardization of a New Product Development (NPD) process affects creativity and efficiency. The research was conducted on a case company through several interviews with employees connected to the process with various experience within the company. Standardization and creativity have in the past been considered to be mutually exclusive. However, recent research shows a connection between them and suggests that they could complement each other. This thesis is built upon a framework of six factors affecting creativity in NPD and has further explored how these are connected to efficiency as well. The research concludes that creativity and efficiency in NPD can work in harmony, complementing and supporting each other by focusing on the content rather than the process.

    Shrinkage porosity and metal expansion penetration are two fundamental defects appearing during the production of complex shaped lamellar cast iron components. Simplified test models simulating the thermal and geometrical conditions existing in complex shaped castings have been successfully used to provoke shrinkage porosity and metal expansion penetration. A stereological investigation of the primary dendrite morphology indicates a maximum intra-dendritic space in connection with the casting surface where the porosity and the penetration defects appear. Away from the defect formation area the intra-dendritic space decreases. Comparison of the simulated local solidification times and measured intra-dendritic space indicates a strong relation which can be explained by the dynamic ripening process. The slow local solidification time situated at the boundary between the casting surface and its surrounding is explained to be the reason for the formation of an austenite morphology which can promote mass flow between dendrites, thereby provoking shrinkage porosity or metal expansion penetration.

    The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of activities, flows and waste in a company's production process. By performing a value stream analysis, non-value adding activities are identified in a production process and then the suggested improvements that can reduce lead times will be stated. The value-stream mapping identifies the flow of information and the flow of material in a production process and this provides the basis for the identification of non-value adding activities.

    We conducted the study at Lammhults Möbel AB in Lammhult Sweden, where the production flow of Spira-21 has been investigated. This to identify any non-value adding activities that affect the flow negative and consumes time and money in a non-value adding way.

    A reasonable approach for the project was taken by studying the methodologies and theories. We conducted interviews and site surveys at Lammhults Möbel AB where the flow of information and material in the production process were investigated. Then a current state map of the production flow is constructed and we were able to identify non-value adding activities. By studying our value-stream map and compare this with the theoretical background suggestions of improvement for reducing non-value adding activities will be done. These suggestions can answer our main question;

    How can non-value adding activities in the flow of material and information be reduced in order to reduce the lead-time of a company's production process

    The proposed improvements that are developed includes, reduce storage. Implementing Lean tools, such as 5S, Kaizen and Kanban, and streamline production management and set demand for delivery of the company's suppliers to get a JIT system.

    Through implementation of proposals, unnecessary inventory, transportation and movements will decrees. There will be more effective management and production becomes more systematic. To consider this result, we believe the lead-time will be reduced and our purpose is achieved.

    För att minska fordonstrafiken tillverkas b.la. fackverksbroar. Då både transport och montage kan resultera i skador på ytbehandlingen kan det både bli kostsamt samt ge upphov till samma korrosion som var syfte att undvika. För att minska riskerna vid lyft av brokonstruktionen kan en säkrare lyftanordning tillverkas. I denna rapporten genomförs en produktutvecklingsprocess för att få fram en lämpad produkt som motsvarar företagets förväntningar samt minimerar risken för skador. Surveyundersökningar i form av gruppintervjuer med anställda på företaget har gett djupare insikt kring problemet. Två separata lyftok som håller konstruktionen i en U-profil med ett tvärgående fyrkantsrör och två lyftöron blev resultatet av detta. Resultatet visar att den slutliga produkten uppfyller majoriteten av företagets önskemål och de krav som ursprungligen ställts; säkerhet samt användarvänlighet.

Detta har sedan mynnat ut i rekommendationer där uppdraget var att minska antalet materialbrister i fallföretagets slutmontering och därmed få processen att flyta jämnare och mer effektivt. Målsättningen är att lösa uppenbarade problem genom att sammanställa lösningar som exponerar sig ur en noggrann förståelse om hur verksamheten fungerar. Empirin och teorin analyseras sedan, med hjälp av en analysmodell, för att skapa en grund till dem dokumenterade problemen och lösningarna som i senare skede beskrivs.

    Studien är utförd på Hammarplast Consumer AB med syftet att skapa djupare förståelse i hur producerande verksamheter arbetar med sina ständiga förbättringar och hur de kan på ett strukturerat sätt utföra förbättringar i den dagliga styrningen för att nå konkurrenskraftig och hållbar utveckling.

    För att detta skulle uppnås dokumenterades företagets vision och utmaning, som sedan bröts ned till ett detaljrikt måltillstånd med hjälp av att nuläget analyserades i den valda processen. Därefter gjordes små, snabba steg och korrigeringar mot måltillståndet, vilket genomfördes med planering, genomföring, reflektering och uppföljning. Det gav förbättringar som var värdehöjande för företaget och som resulterade i ett steg närmare visionen. Det strukturerade tillvägagångssättet, kata, bidrog till att medarbetarna blev engagerade och involverade.

    I de avslutande kapitlen fördes en diskussion om hur företaget kan på ett strukturerat sätt utföra deras ständiga förbättringar i den dagliga styrningen som kommer att föra dem emot en konkurrenskraftig och hållbar utveckling.

    Konkurrensen idag är en stor anledning till att företag tvingas effektivisera och ett företags överlevnad bygger på att man rör sig snabbare än sina konkurrenter. Därför är det viktigt att man arbetar med ständiga förbättringar och ha fokus på tillverkningsprocessen med det sämsta flödet och störst inverkan på produktionens effektivitet, nämligen företagets flaskhals. Syftet med arbetet var att öka kapacitet och flexibilitet i en flaskhalsprocess som kallas IMAprocessen. Flaskhalsprocessen studerades på ett fallföretag för att ge en nulägesbeskrivning som sedan analyserades med teorin. Genom analysen kunde två stora faktorer till att det är en flaskhalsprocess konstateras, och dessa var långa omställningar och brist på material in till processen. Då ställtiderna ansågs som det största problemet gjordes ett experiment som bestod av två tester för att se om ställtiderna kunde reduceras. Resultatet av experimentet blev att ställtiderna kunde reduceras i båda testerna, där test ett innebar den största reduceringen. För att uppnå detta krävs det att operatörernas arbetsuppgifter fördelas vad gäller programmering och förberedelse av material.

    Inom trähusbranschen har den ökade kundanpassningen av bostäder gjort att företag fått allt svårare att möta efterfrågan utan att tappa i lönsamhet. Syftet med det här arbetet är att ta reda på hur ett medelstort svenskt trähusföretag, som tillverkar en stor mängd kundanpassade bostäder ska kunna erbjuda en stor mängd kundvariation utan att förlora i effektivitet och lönsamhet. Flera av lösningsförslagen som presenteras handlar om att öka flexibiliteten på produktionslinan för väggar. Om flera olika väggmodeller ska kunna tillverkas på samma linje utan att komplexiteten minskar måste arbetet kunna utföras snabbare, eller bli gjort snabbare. Våra förslag, som bygger på teorier från mass customization handlar om att skapa initiativ till att omfördela arbetskraft och resurser, så att rätt personer finns på rätt plats för rätt typ av vägg. Det handlar också om att minimera skillnaderna mellan de två typer av väggmodeller som finns för att göra det lättare för montörer att lära sig memorera moment, och därmed påskynda processen av inlärning.

    Cutting tool inserts are often coated with thin layers either through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or physical vapor deposition (PVD) processes. In order to have a better wear resistance cutting tools are mostly subjected to post-coating treatment processes. Shot peening is one of the processes that is used to improve the fatigue life of metallic components. In this study, the finite element (FE) method is employed to model the elastic-plastic deformation and development of residual stress distributions in a cutting tool after the impact of a shot medium. To carry out the work, CVD coated cemented carbide has been chosen to be the workpiece (insert), and the coatings of the chosen insert are Titanium Carbo Nitride (TiCN)  and Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3). Aim of the study is to model a single impact in the shot peening process on a surface of a coated cemented carbide insert while simulating the plastic deformation of the materials. In addition, the objective of the study is also to understand and explain the mechanics of shot peening process and find applicable mechanical properties of the materials for FE modeling. Conjugately, the influence of shot peening process parameters (e.g. velocity, diameter or shape of the peening media) on residual stress distribution has been investigated and the results obtained were compared to the one observed from experiment. The modeling in the study is carried out both with and without initial residual stresses in the materials. The initial residual stresses are estimated by applying a thermal load to the model. The results show that the compressive residual stresses achieved while shot peening by an edge-shaped medium are significantly higher at the surface (i.e. in a coated layer) than compared to a globular medium. In contrast, it is observed that the compressive residual stresses in the cemented carbide are significantly higher and deeper when shot peened with globular medium than the edge-shaped medium. Furthermore, the results of parameteric study demonstrate that the smaller medium induces higher residual stresses at the surface (i.e. in a coated layer) than in the cemented carbide. In contrast, it is observed that the bigger medium induces less residual stresses at the surface (i.e. in a coated layer) and higher residual stresses deeper in the cemented carbide. Whereas, it is observed that the higher residual stresses at the surface (i.e. in a coated layer) and in the cemeneted carbide can be achieved simultaneously by shot peens having a  higher velocity. Residual stress profiles modelled in this report correlate with data from previous studies.

     

    This study has been carried out at Sandvik Coromant, Edge and Surfaces department in Stockholm, Sweden.

    För att ge olika maskiner olika utväxlingar används kugghjul. Dessa kugghjul tillverkas genom olika typer av processteg. Ett av dessa steg kan vara att dragbrotscha ett kilspår. När dessa kilspår dras, bildas det grader på under och ovansidan av kilspåret. Dessa gradas för hand i dagsläget av Swepart transmission, med processfördröjning och arbetsskador som följd. Hela kugghjulets tillverkningsprocess förutom gradningen av kilspåret, sker helt automatiskt i en större robotcell, där dess processrobot är den som sätter tillverkningstakten. Genom att studera olika gradmetoder och system för automatisk gradning kommer ett lösningsförslag att tas fram för att automatisera gradningen av dessa kilspår utan att påverka tillverkningsprocessens cykeltider negativt. Lösningsförslaget blir en maskin som bygger på modulärt linjärsystem och som gradar kilspåret med hjälp av skärande bearbetning från två håll samtidigt. Dessutom kommer maskinen själv att leverera kugghjulet till transportbandet ut från robotcellen.

    Syftet med studien är att öka kunskapen och förståelsen inom effektivisering av interna resurser på ett tillverkande företag, för att sedan kunna ge förslag på förbättringar inom verksamheten. Studien utfördes på Smålandsvillan AB som ligger i Vrigstad och tillverkar modulhus i trä.En materialkartläggning låg till grund för arbetet och ett antal slöserier och brister kunde identifie­ras. Genom att analysera det empiriska materialet tillsammans med studiens framtagna teorier kunde en identifiering av företagets slöserier genereras. Dessa slöserier orsakades till stor del av bristande struktur på företaget. Genom observationer på företaget framkom också ett antal brister i arbetsmiljön längs med produkt­ionslinan. I resultatdelen togs förslag fram som eliminerar dessa slöserier och brister, och genom detta bidra till en effektivare resurshantering.I slutet av arbetet besvaras forskningsfrågan, även rekommendationer presenteras och det förklaras hur de kommer hjälpa företaget om de skulle implementeras.

    Dagens kunder kräver kvalitet, hög leveranssäkerhet och flexibilitet till ett så lågt pris som möjligt. Ska företaget behålla sin plats på marknaden krävs det att alla processer inom verksamheten ständigt utvecklas. Ur logistiksynpunkt är målet alltid att skapa värde för kunden genom att erbjuda god leveransservice, men med bibehållet låga logistikkostnader.

    Målet med denna fallstudie är att presentera ett alternativ för hur detta kan upp-nås i form av en standard. Standarden ska innehålla rutiner för en effektiv in-ternförsörjning av en komponentfamilj med stor variation i behov där produktionen är kundorderstyrd.

    I fallstudien valdes kata som arbetssätt med fokus på att förstå nuläget för att sedan arbeta mot ett måltillstånd. Detta ledde till en standard med resultatet:

    - Eliminerat icke-värdeskapande arbete motsvarande 30 min/vecka

    - Minskad tid det tar att leta efter artiklar i lagret med 58 %

    - Ordning och reda vid lager- och förbrukningspunkt

    - Korrekt lagersaldo

    Abstract [en]

    In this work, the time varying stresses in a Howden axial flow fan are obtained by finite element analyses. Dynamic substructuring is used to obtain accurate values of the stresses in the threads of the blade shaft, the component which connects the blade with the hub.

    Three different global models are used to compare the influence of neglecting the fan shaft and the stiffness influence of the centrifugal force.

    The relative displacements, which are obtained from the global models, have been used as boundary condition in the detailed models. The detailed models are used to obtain the Von Mises stresses in the root of the threads of the blade shaft. Finally the results of the three global models are compared with experimental measured data provided by Howden.

    The experimental data results in the highest Von Mises stresses. The model with the fan shaft and the stiffness influence of the centrifugal force gives values for the Von Mises stresses which are approximately twenty percent lower. The model without the fan shaft results in the lowest stresses which are approximately forty percent lower than the stresses obtained using the measured data.

    Studien är utförd som en fallstudie på EAB i Smålandsstenar med syftet och målet att systematiskt demonstrera hur en materialhanteringsprocess kan omorganiseras hos växande företag för att skapa en effektivare process och bidra till bättre arbetsmiljö.

    För att uppnå det har observationer och intervjuer skett löpande under studien för att skapa ett nuläge att utgå från. Det användes som grund för analysen av nuvarande arbetssätt jämfört med litteraturens teoretiska ideal. Genom analysen togs ett resultat och en lösning fram där en ny lageryta presenteras för att minska avstånden i materialhanteringsprocessen. Arbetssättet till lösningen kan appliceras på olika företag. Genom de minskade avstånden kan både tid, pengar och energi sparas in. Inte minst bidrar det till en bättre arbetsmiljö för medarbetare.

    Det finns utrymme för vidare forskning inom scanners, informationsflöden, automation och miljöpåverkan.

    Vakuumbrytare som utsätts för höga kortslutningsströmmar (kA) kan förstöras om den rörliga kontaktdelen i brytaren studsar tillbaka för långt efter att den har nått sitt ändläge. Detta p.g.a. att det sker en spänningskollaps mellan kontaktytorna så att en ny ljusbåge uppstår vilket bränner sönder kontaktytorna. En lämplig dämpningsmekanism för att försöka förhindra en återstuds av kontakten fordras. Hur detta kan utvärderas m.h.a. en matematisk modell som bygger på en differentialekvation framtagen ur krafterna som verkar på det mekaniska fjädersystemet, för att försöka uppskatta dämpningskoefficient behandlas i denna rapport. Resultatet visar att en oljedämpare med en slaglängd på max 8 mm är bäst lämpad som dämpare av det mekaniska systemet. Detta baseras på de slutsatser som dras av den matematiska modellen ihop med jämförelser av det verkliga rörelsebeteendet hos brytaren.

    In this thesis, the dynamics of two plates overlapping and connected by three bolts are studied. The data collected in the test are used in modal analysis. The vibrational test and the modal analysis were made using an LMS system. Hammer excitation is used for the tests.

    The main purpose of this thesis is to study how the suspensions affect the extracted eigenfrequencies and modal dampings. In this thesis, more than 10 suspensions were examined. Another objective in this thesis work is to build an FE-model. This model is made using the software Abaqus. To improve the reliability of the FE-model, a set of reliable experimental data is used to calibrate the model. The calibrated FE-model, using the measurement data, has a dynamic behavior close to the measurement data.

    This degree project is about the improvement of an existing reading machine system "MagniLink TTS", which is provided by Low Vision International Sweden AB.

    According to the received feedbacks, some features together with the 3rd party components which have gone EOL (end of life) need to be updated.

    The project starts with designing the process, then to define the problem. The next step is to analyze the requirements from the customers and company, then to develop some design concepts with brainstorming and analyze the subsystems. In addition, 3D drawings are used to explain the final concept. Last, DFX (design for quality, assembly, manufacture and environment) is performed and analytical prototyping is included in the process of improvement.

    Övergången som kraftvärmeverken har gjort från användning av olja till biobränsle har medfört stora utmaningar i form av logistiska problem som lagring, hantering samt transport. Syftet med projektet är att med en fördjupad kunskapsnivå inom logistik förstå dess inverkan på lagerhantering och hur det kan appliceras på ett kraftvärmeverk. Studien har visat att valet av lagernivåer har en direkt lönsamhetspåverkan på ett kraftvärmeverks el – och värmeproduktionen. Den rekommenderade lagernivån som studien resulterade i kommer att medföra att fallföretaget undviker intäktsförluster samt bristkostnader. Författarna rekommenderar att processer i ett tidigare skede i försörjningskedjan skall förbättras och kvalitetssäkras. Ett sätt att säkra kvalitén i processerna är genom att förstärka avtalen.

    En av dagens vanligaste maskiner för att underlätta hanteringen av tungt gods är gaffeltrucken. Denna tillverkas i industriell produktion där konkurrensen är hård. Den hårda konkurrensen bland tillverkningsföretagen på den globala marknaden ökar strävan att tillverka produkter till ett så kostnadseffektivt pris som möjligt. Syftet med det här arbetet är att utreda huruvida det går att optimera en befintlig drivlinsupphängning med avseende på tillverkningskostnad och vikt. Genom en produktutveckling skall ett koncept för en optimerad lösning tas fram gällande konstruktion, materialval och tillverkningsmetod. För att skapa ett underlag till denna produktutvecklingsprocess har väsentliga teorier tagits fram och presenterats i arbetet. Produktutvecklingen kommer generera ett nytt koncept. I produktutvecklingen utförs även materialval, val av tillverkningsmetod, beräkningar, FEM-simuleringar, designoptimering och utvärdering angående kostnaderna. Detta resulterade slutligen i en möjlig kostnadsreducering. Vikten kan dessutom reduceras utan att försämra hållfastheten.

    This is a final bachelor degree project for mechanical engineering. TM Design & Installation AB company needs to reduce the setup time for one end-forming machine by 50%. After some discussion and analysis, the group decides to subdivide the main problem into six sub problems. By aiming at each small problem and figure out several solutions, the group finally have concepts for the problem.

    The Project contains of the achievement of a design process which thanks to the theories treated in Product Development Through System Engineering and thanks to our previous knowledge and experience. By following all the steps in the books, the project leads us to the selection of final concept.
