Den Interkulturelle Kommunikatören: En studie av kulturens inverkan på kommunikation2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

AbstractAuthors: Åsa Höjer, Karl WijkmarkTitle: The intercultural communicator. A study of cultures’ influence on communication.Level: BA Thesis in Media and Communication StudiesLocation: University on KalmarLanguage: SwedishNumber of pages: 67Date of seminar: 2009-01-15Advisor: Jens CavallinKey words: Intercultural communication, culture, Hofstede´s cultural dimensions, anxiety and uncertainty, self-confidence, high and low context, verbal and nonverbal communication, Telenor, Pakistan, Scandinavia.Case company: TelenorPurpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate what cultural differences, regarding communication, that are present between Scandinavia and Pakistan. Furthermore the purpose is to illustrate which factors that are important for personnel working for Telenor, that are about to work in a foreign culture, in order to create effective intercultural communication.Methodology: The following study is a case study that has used a qualitative methodology with interviews conducted via e-mail. To be able to interpret and understand human experiences and situations a hermeneutical approach has been taken. Since we have had existing theories which has enabled us to look and test the “real world” a deductive approach has been used.Theoretical perspectives: As a basis for this study lies a cultural theory with focus on Hofstede´s study of specific cultures within nations. Furthermore, theories within the intercultural communication´s area such as stereotypes, high and low context communication, verbal and nonverbal communication have been used. Finally a theory regarding anxiety and uncertainty was applied. Conclusions: By studying the Pakistani culture that is characterized by collectivism, a large power distance and high context communication where the messages are implicit, this study has established that communication is carried out in a rather different way than in Scandinavia. Besides having basic knowledge about the foreign culture, and thereby be able to manage and avoid misunderstandings in the communication, this study has established thatan individual´s personality has a big influence on the effectiveness of the intercultural communication. The person´s cultural background together with his/her individual traits and values creates a personal communication-pattern that is more or less suitable in the intercultural communication encounter.

Nile: Instrument för cellprovtagning2009Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Personal stories to visual representation: ‘The stories of Zili’2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

I represented a person’s stories and memories of childhood through the material called glass, and found a method to approach personal stories.

To do this, the medium to express my conception that is express of the personal experience and extreme situation on glass was based. The most significant point of study was realizing the nature of emotions and meanings within a person’s life. As well as special instruments and to analyze whether it is an appropriate expression.

Accordingly with this, I collected individual stories from Zili and tried to comprehensively understand the cause behind. For that I approached different cases of psychology theory to compare. After I analyzed the colour and object that relate to memories or the person. Expression of artefact I created from foundational theory through my perspective. I represented in magnification of memories as an expression on glass artefacts for respect of peoples diversity life.

This led me to make more concrete context in practical work and theoretical tool as well.

Bandesign för Multiplayerspel2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

Comparative study of operating system security using SELinux and Systrace2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis makes a comparative study of the security systemsSystrace (used primarily with OpenBSD) and SELinux (usedexclusively with Linux), trying to answer the question as to whichtype of security is offered by each respective system, and wheneach should be used. The key difference between SELinux andSystrace seems to be their mode of operation, where SELinux, built around the LSM framework in the Linux kernel, works withtype enforcement on files, sockets and other objects, whereasSystrace works on a strict system call basis. The two systems areseen to serve two different purposes which sometimes overlap, but in just as many cases provide solutions for entirely differentquality priorities.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to study if there are differences between female and male journalists writing in daily, Swedish newspapers that can reinforce the fact that the media content are already unequal from a gender point of view. What inspired me was the possibility of such differences in accordance with gender theory.

I also wanted to examine if these possible differences varied when different kinds of newspapers and editions were compared.

A quantitative content analysis was used and during one week in late autumn 2007 the articles in both the paper and the Internet editions of four newspapers were counted and classified on the basis of the sex of the journalist, topics covered and ways of dealing with the topic. Two of the studied newspapers have a nationwide coverage and the other two are small local newspapers.

Qualitative interviews with both executive editors and journalists working on the studied newspapers were also carried out.

I found that certain topics and ways of writing are typically female ones and other typically male ones. But I also found intriguing similarities between the female and male journalists writing. Comparing the different kinds of newspapers and the different kinds of editions that I studied, several variations were found. In the local newspapers the female journalists did get published to the same extent as their male colleagues but for one of the national newspapers this was not the case.
