Title:“My first thought is a girl that cuts herself” – A qualitative study about professionals in human service organizations description of self-injurious behavior.

    Supervisor: Ann Ottengrim

    Assessor: Rickard Ulmestig

    The purpose of this study has been to understand how professionals in human service organizations (HSO) describe self-injuries behaviour, how they describe the individuals that self-harm and if the professionals describe any possible differences in how men and women self-harm as well as how professional’s knowledge concerning self-injurious behaviour is contructed. The study answers three questions;

    - What kind of actions do professionals in HSO describe as being self-injurious behaviour?

    - How is knowledge constructed by professionals in HSO concerning self-injurious behaviour?

    - How are people who engage in self-injurious behaviour being described?

    - How do professionals in human service organizations describe potential differences between men and women´s self-injurious behaviour?

Qualitative interviews have been chosen as the method in this study to gather empirical data and the social constructionism theory has been implemented to analyse the empirical data.

The result of this study shows that self-injurious behaviour is a complex and at the same time a dynamic phenomenon. There are a lot of different actions that are being describes as being self-injurious behaviour. An individual that cuts its own body tissue or an individual that often gets involved in psychical fights are examples of acts that are being described as having a self-injurious behaviour. The informants also described that their knowledge and what they define as self-injurious behaviour has changed over time in the field which indicates that self-injurious behaviour is a dynamic category. According to our results it doesn’t seem to exist a stereotype of whom and why someone engages in self-harm. But men tend to self-harm in a more severe way than women.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain knowledge about parents of children with substance abuse and their experiences of social services support and treatment. The data collection consists of seven individual qualitative and semi-structured interviews with parents of children with substance abuse. The results were interpreted with a hermeneutic perspective and later on categorised and presented with a qualitative content analysis. The theoretical framework that has been used to analyse this study is systems theory. This study shows that the parents in our study did not get any support from the social services. Instead the parents found support in non-profit support groups and in their family and friends. The results also show that the parents in this study did not feel like the social services worked with them and other support groups, but instead only focused on the child with the substance abuse.

But do their voices get heard? To find out how the foster care secretary reasoning about biological children of foster cares, I have interviewed four randomly municipalities in Sweden. The study is qualitative and based on a development ecological system theoretical perspective.

The result shows that biological children’s right is focused and that the secretary’s ambition is to talk with the biological children before and under the foster care period. Before the family becomes a foster care they have to undergo extensive training to learn and feel ready for the new life situation.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how the new established phenomenon of “Internet drugs” causes challenges to organizations, both individually and in relation to collaboration. The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with representatives from three organizations - one youth police unit, one medical addiction centre and four units working within social services. The theoretical approach that was used is theory about human service organizations, theory about collaboration and new institutional organizational theory. A conclusion is that the current drug classification is problematic and mainly challenging for the organizations that focus on prevention work and early interventions. Meanwhile, the phenomenon also concerns organizations who work with individuals with drug misuse and/or dependency problems that often holds some kind of treatment. In these cases it involves the use of the widespread Internet drug Spice, however, then it is associated to a side addiction, often with the aim of avoiding positive results on drug tests. Our conclusion shows that the parties concerned in current collaboration believe that the work against Internet drugs to some extent already accommodated within the existing framework for collaboration. Therefore the representatives do not have a need for collaboration specially aimed for the Internet drugs.

    Abstract [en]

Media have reported frequently about tough working conditions at the Swedish migration board for several years. The aim of this study was to investigate how the current migrant crisis has affected the migration board staff’s ability to practice their daily work. More specifically its aim was to find out how the crisis has affected the staff’s ability to uphold the law in the administration procedure and how they relate to the migration boards goals, caseload and resources. The study was based on a quantitative method with surveys delivered to the migration board’s staff and later analyzed with Lipsky’s theory about street-level bureaucracy. The results indicate that migration board staff experience problems to some extent with upholding the law in administration and with high caseloads and inadequate resources.

    Abstract [sv]

This study aims to make out, which notions and ideas about gender and sexuality that comes into expression in the description of the deviant youth. This study is a narrative analysis, based on a queer theoretical approach. The queer theory directs attention to the normative frameworks on gender and sexuality. Queer theory also illustrates the relationship between the normative and what is considered abnormal/deviant. The study's empirical basis is 8 legal texts, legal documents formed in a Swedish context, which include the welfare state´s judiciary and social services. The legal documents are concerning the social services care of deviant youth, based on the law that gives them  right to force care and treatment on anti-social youth. The study aims to examine the legal documents from a narrative analysis; in the way the story of the young is portrayed and what type of norms about gender and sexuality that emerges from that story.

The study’s result, although based on a content of 8 legal texts, is a finding of a one-sided story about the antisocial youth, depending on the youth´s gender. These findings are portrayed in what the study entitles: The damaged girl and The dangerous boy. These categories are used to illustrate in what way the social welfare system and judiciary constructs the way boys and girls may differ from the norm standards about gender and sexuality. The standard-setting institutions tend to retain the description of the young, despite the youngster's counter-stories, in which the young states their awareness of their normative violations. In conclusion the social welfare system and the judiciary, has the authority to construct the story about the deviant youth; a story that is constructed to legitimize the social institutions intervention in the care of antisocial youth.

Mentorship – a pedagogical method for integration of theory and practice in higher education2017In: Nordic Journal of Studies in Educational Policy, ISSN 2002-0317, Vol. 3, no 3, p. 202-217Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Mentorship is a method that is used in both professional education and training and inworking life to introduce new employees. Previous research has shown that there is limitedexperience of mentorship in the parts of higher education that are outside of professionaleducation and training. The purpose of this article is to deepen knowledge of how mentorshipcan be used as a pedagogic tool to integrate theory and practice in a social scienceprogramme at a Swedish university. The empirical material is obtained from a case study thatincludes students/mentees and contact persons/mentors. The results show that mentorship isan important contribution to the learning process for the integration of theory and practice inhigher education to develop both practically applied and theoretically anchored knowledge.Besides cooperation forms and workplace-related studies in the programme, mentorship thusbecomes the third component of the learning process.

Reflecting talks: a pedagogical model in the learning organization2019In: Reflective Practice, ISSN 1462-3943, E-ISSN 1470-1103, Vol. 20, no 2, p. 234-249Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the article is to deepen the understanding of how a pedagogical model for reflecting talks can be used in order to make sustainable learning part of the daily work in the learning organization. From an interactive research approach, we have together with a project management group in a European Social Fund project worked with sustainable learning and knowledge development. Empirical data has been collected at the implementation of ten reflecting talks about sustainable equality. The results of the study lead to a strategy for how sustainable learning can become part of the daily work at a workplace. The strategy is constituted by a pedagogical model for reflecting talks, which clearly shows how sustainable learning in an organization can be structured. The core of the pedagogical model for the reflecting talks where both practically applied and theoretically anchored knowledge are important components. The learning process is based on observation, reflection, analysis and discussion of concrete situations/events. The models rests on four basic conditions; pedagogical competence, a delimited problem area, the learning group and timeframes. The model can be used in the daily work at short dialogues or at more penetrating discussions.

Självkänslan hos människor med missbruksproblematik: en fallstudie om Västervik kommuns självkänsloprogram2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to describe the Västervik municipality's self-esteem program and, from sociology of emotions, analyze the therapists' experience of the impact the program has on the clients in strengthening the self-esteem of people living with an addiction but who strive to get rid of it. The work assumes a qualitative approach and a case study was applied. To achieve the purpose, the empirics were based on three semistructured interviews and the program's manual. The interviews were analyzed based on a thematic analysis. The program's manual was processed using a content analysis. The thematic analysis’ themes and document analysis were analyzed using Thomas J. Scheff's sociology of emotion. The result showed that strong self-esteem is important to people living with addiction. Another important aspect in the result is the program’s ability to visualize the clients' feelings of shame. My conclusion is that self-esteem is important for people who want to get rid of addiction and the self-esteem program is useful for the purpose. But it may be that both clients that are in and those who leave the program need more time, better support and other resources to process the shame that occurs. In order to find out how shame can be related to self-esteem and how it affects people living with addiction, further research in the field is required.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate how a community motivates and ensures the implementation of its values and how this document affected personnel of meaning, vision and daily operations. The study was based on semi-structured interviews, in which nine respondents were interviewed in a city in southern Sweden. Interviews dealt with three different themes, all concerned organization or set of values. The analysis was based partly on how organizations and institutions build up and maintain their legitimacy. The analysis was also explained by the new institutional theory and its concepts isomorphism. In conclusion, the study shows that the concept of value system is very subjective and means different things depending on which profession you belong to. The study also showed that officials of the municipality indicate that the values discussed continuously in operation. This picture did not fit at all agree with the care assistants who considered values almost never discussed. The study also showed that the implementation was not as successful as desired, then no time for reflection was. The study showed that the reason that there was an opportunity to reflect due to the time and resources were too scarce. Throughout officials related concepts in the study more to an organizational plan, when care assistants instead relate everything to the actual meeting with the care recipient. Instead of using values as a benchmark they instead used of the "inner compass" that consists of subjective norms and values.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how a child's rights of speech are taken into account in child welfare investigations. A child's speech or words are not always taken seriously or as important as it should be in the child’s context. This problem has been a major topic of concern both at the national and the international level. Children want their speech of rights to be respected. It is their fundamental right that every human must guarantee to protect these rights to make a better world for future generations. Therefore in order to deeply examine the research topic, the authors used different theoretical approaches like power theory, communication theory and freedom of action. Furthermore the authors gathered more information using semi structure interviews with social workers who work with child welfare investigations. From the interview discussions, the researchers looked for recurrent themes and came with some findings that children are able to express their opinions in child welfare investigations. Children’s visibility and participation in child welfare investigations have improved since BBIC (the child’s needs at the center) has been involved in child welfare investigations. Children´s words or opinions were also ignored. More so, the actual level of how a child´s contribution directly influenced the decision making process was very unclear. The study further shows that social workers are using various communication methods and techniques to adress children's wishes and opinions to provide the best acceptable services. A well-established feedback session is made available in order to gather the children’s opinions and improve on the services.

Title: To call things by their right names – The example of bullying or victimization at work [Translated title]

    Supervisor: Ulf Drugge

    Assessor: Kerstin Arnesson

Purpose: The purpose of this study is, by a discourse psychological approach, to investigate how our choice of concept of a bullying situation at work can correlate with managers’ way of handling the situation. The issues I have answered in order to fulfill my purpose was first how the managers defined the concepts in the studies title, and second how the mangers handled a situation of bullying at work.

Method: I have used qualitative methods in my study in order to acquire my data. The method I used was semi-structured interviews. I analysed the results with a discourse psychological perspective by help of the theory’s concepts “interpretation repertoires” and “subjects positioning”. The participants of the study were four managers within the same organisation but in different manager positions, all with a work environment responsibility.

Results: The results and analysis of my study shows that there is a lack of knowledge of the concept “victimization” by those who are obligated the responsibility of the work environment. This can result in a situation of victimization at work that does not follow the correct law-bound recommendations written in AFS 2015:4 – Organisatorisk och Social Arbetsmiljö.

Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that if the situation defines as either bullying or victimization, there will be follow-up meetings with the victim. But due to the lack of knowledge by the concept “victimization” there is an increased risk that the situation will not be handled in the way it should, in accordance with the AFS 2015:4, but will only be handled as temporary conflict.

Keywords: Use of concepts, bullying, victimization, work environment

    Abstract [en]

The purposes of this essay are to examine how employees in a psychiatric ward experience the relationships between them and the caretakers, and to study the different aspects of relationships between them. For instance the power relation and the friend relation.

The essay is based on a qualitative method with semi structured interviews from 9 employees, whom are nurses and caregivers at a ward in Växjö psychiatric institution.

The results from this study illuminate that the relationship between caregivers and caretakers is a vital aspect of the care itself. And that this relationship is the foundation for caregiver to be able to offer necessary care. A good relationship between caregiver and caretaker is characterized by the abilities of the caregiver to create trust and confidence in their relationship to the caretaker, as well as supporting and satisfying the caretakers’ needs by help of their relationship.

This study highlights the issues in the relationship between caregivers and caretakers as well as the risk that pertain to this relationship.

The results indicate that certain power exertions overt and covert are factors in some relationships. These power exertion are, however, hard to define, the caregivers also seem partly unaware of them.

    Abstract [en]

Traditionally and historically certain jobs have been recognized as male or female professions leading to the assumption that the barrier crossing men and women working in these gender atypical jobs are being less masculine and less feminine. The aim of this study is to examine similarities and differences among male social workers and female police officers in the experience of being a gender minority in their workplace and how it effects the construction of their gender identity. Working with a qualitative approach and using semi-constructed interviews the study was conducted by interviewing a total of five social workers and four female police officers, in six different communities, about their personal experiences of being a gender minority in a gender atypical job. The result shows both differences and similarities between the genders and their occupation; on a personal level neither of the respondents seemed to have a problem working in a gender atypical job although admitting that working in a “female” and “male” profession  had effects on their personality but not on how they viewed themselves as men or women. On a group level the respondents experienced both differences and similarities; both genders talked about being stereotyped into taking on certain tasks but also about having advantages of being male or female in certain situations. Further on the female police officers talked about being pushed aside to give room for the male colleagues while the male social workers experienced the opposite; being more acknowledged. On a societal level respondents from both groups were talking about a shift in societies showcasing that the view on men and women and what is considered male and female have been or in a process of being disintegrated. The results were seen from a social constructionist viewing point and were interpreted and analyzed using following theories and theoretical concepts: Stereotype, gender, role theory, identity, gender identity and the theory about the mirrored self.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to illuminate how social workers in social services work with the social phenomenon, homelessness in two municipalities. The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with interviewees from a department of social services. Our theories that we used was resistant inequality, structural discrimination, exclusion, empowerment and representation. After compilation of our empirical our conclusions are that homelessness is a complex phenomenon. Social workers handles homelessness based on client’s needs and the work is individualized. There are no specific plans or guidelines. Homelessness is integrated in the organisation. The responsibility lies mainly on the individual to find housing. One other conclusion is that the landlords and housing are the largest affiliates to the social services regarding homelessness. The social workers work to prevent evictions by grants rent arrears because the housing market is the biggest problem. It’s a growing problem in both municipalities.

    Abstract [en]

This study intends to illuminate women’s experiences of their own self-harm. Self-harm is mostly associated with women and research shows that women mostly are over-represented. This study describes women’s experiences about their self-harm but also how they perceive the elements around them during their illness. There is a focus on women’s abilities to manage emotions and how they are expressed. There is also a focus on how women perceive the support from important people in their individual social network. This study is completed by a qualitative approach based on six autobiographies there young women tells about their self-harm and mental health. The study has a hermeneutic approach which enables interpretation of our collected material. The result is presented based on two themes that focus on the women’s emotional management and their support from their social network. The empirical material is analyzed on the basis of theoretical concepts of systems theory and network theory but also Antonovsky’s (1987) theory; KASAM. The result of this study resulted that the women’s social network have significance for them during the time with self-harm whether their social network are functional or not. The study has also found that the women’s emotional management are affected by meaningsfullness, manageability and comprehensibility.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to, based on qualitative interviews with managers and group interviews with care providers, understand their interpretation of integrity and also their scope for action to satisfy disable people’s integrity at sheltered housing for adults. The questions of this study are: How do the managers and the care providers interpret the concept of integrity? Which scope for action do they have to satisfy the integrity of disabled people? Method: Individual – and group interviews have been used as methods to gather empirical data. Theory: The theories of scope for action and integrity as a theoretical conception have been used to analyze the empirical material. Results: The informants of this study found it difficult to give a specific definition of integrity. The main aspects we could distinguish were that integrity was interpreted as a personal sphere and self-determination. The result of this study shows that the scope for action to satisfy the integrity of disabled people is affected by many factors. First of all the scope for action is affected by the Swedish law LSS and the assignment within the organization. The scope for action is also affected by individual adaption for each person. This study shows the importance of the relationship between the managers, care providers and the persons. At last the informants emphasize some dilemmas in their scope for action to satisfy the integrity.

The aim of this study was to examine the experienced study situation and drug use of program students at the Linnaeus University and to investigate whether there was a connection. With this survey, we wanted an oversight of the situation which could be a basis for efforts. The empirical material was collected via an online survey, answered by 135 students. Of the 135 respondents, 65% were women, 34% men and 1% other. Women aged 23-27 represent the majority of respondents. The results showed that there was a present drug use among the students however it didn’t indicate a widespread and continuous use. The experienced study situation showed that the students felt moderate to high stress over their situation. No significant connection could be seen between drug use and the experienced study situation.

    Abstract [en]

This article is about the application of the two coercive legislations, Care of Abusers (Special Provisions) Act (LVM) and  the Compulsory Psychiatric Care Act (LPT) when individuals suffer from comorbidity. The authority who files the application for coercive interventions differs between the legislations. In LVM the social welfare board files the application and in LPT the chief psychiatrist.  Earlier research has shown that the individuals of the comorbidity group do not get their needs met in either of the legislations. It has also occurred that concrete arguments which relate to statutory criteria are missing. Our aim was to gain knowledge about how the court argued for these criteria, especially in cases where comorbidity exist. Another aim was to see which legislation that gave legal impact. Finally, we wanted to examine the roles of the chief psychiatrist and the social welfare board in court negotiations. We decided to study twenty court cases from Administrative court, ten cases from LVM and ten from LPT where the same individual had been committed to coercive care according to both legislations, this to capture the comorbidity. We interpreted the documents using discourse analysis and selected two concepts, inspired by Foucault and Fairclough, that we thought could be fruitful for our analysis. The result shows that there is more often argumentation about if the legal criteria in LVM are fulfilled compared to LPT where the argumentation is less informative. This result may have been influenced by the secrecy of Law. We also found out that the legislation that was given legal impact depended on the authorities assess of which need that was most urgent. The last finding was that the chief psychiatrist`s opinion was never questioned by the court, but the statements made by the social welfare board was.

The aim of this study has been to highlight and describe the perceptions of beggars, by studying and analyzing empirical data collected through observing different threads on a Swedish discussion forum. We wanted to study how beggars are mentioned in the discussion forum to illustrate the opinions and perceptions. To analyze the data a qualitative method of meaning condensation were used. The result was analyzed from a perspective of deviant behavior and three theories: Goffman's theory about Stigma, Beckers labelling theory and the theory about the established and the outsiders by Elias. The results showed that beggars are categorized and described as criminals, misfits and frauds. The results also gave us the conclusion that there are negative attitudes towards beggars.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how social workers interpret right of residence when EU-citizens apply for social assistance by claiming their residential rights. The intersectional perspective was used as a theoretical approach in order to illustrate power relationship between social workers as representatives for Swedish authorities and clients of foreign origin. Using appeal documents from Swedish administrative courts as a study material and a qualitative discourse analysis as a data collection method the results were classified into categories concerning social workers’ interpretations of right of residence, circumstances considered by social workers as crucial for right of residence and social workers interpretations of EU-citizens’ entitlement to social assistance. Data regarding EU-citizens’ nationalities and gender were collected in order to identify their possible influence on outcome of their applications. Analysis of results identified a significant inconsistency in social workers’ interpretations of right of residence as well as in application of the law. EU-citizens’ entitlement to social assistance was denied on terms of EU-citizens being “economically inactive persons” or not having “a real chance to get an employment”. Neither EU-citizens nationalities nor gender could be linked to outcomes of their applications for social assistance.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to understand and lighten the interviewees’ descriptions and their experiences of being unaccompanied youths in Sweden. In order to research this, we have analyzed the barriers, opportunities and the strategies they use to become a part of the society but also to strengthen their position in the society. The method we have used is the qualitative method and the data has been gathered by semi structured interviews with six unaccompanied youths. In order to analyze our results we have used symbolic interactionism and Antonovsky’s theory about sense of coherence. The results of the study have shown that most of the interviewees experienced having a difficult first period in Sweden considering the fact that they left their family and their home country to start a new life in Sweden, young and alone. With the use of different strategies, this became better over time as they developed their Swedish language skills, started to study, entered the labor market and expanded their social contact network. At the same time they have faced multiple opportunities to become a part of the society in different ways. They have also faced several barriers which has prevented them of becoming a part of the society and also weakened their position in the society. Therefore they have developed and used different strategies to get through these barriers. The main conclusion is that there are more positive aspects and possibilities than barriers for the unaccompanied youths to feel that they are a part of the society.

In this chapter we will show how local youth participation initiatives depend on local and national youth policies. To complete our understanding of youth policies dealing with participation, this chapter pays attention to European agendas developed since the early 1980s and puts them in relation with the national level: how do they shape youth participation policy and how are they translated in national narratives?

Are clear boundaries a prerequisite for well-functioning collaboration in home health care?: A mixed methods study2018In: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 32, no 1, p. 128-137Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine whether professional collaboration in home health care is associated with clear boundaries between principals' areas of responsibility and the professions areas of responsibility, respectively. Data were derived from a web-based survey that was carried out in one county in the middle of Sweden during spring 2013. Participants were health professionals and managers from the county council and from all the municipalities in the county. Both structured and open-ended questions were utilised. A total of 421 individuals (90% women) answered the structured questions, and 91 individuals (22% of the 421) answered the open-ended questions. Quantitative data were analysed with descriptive statistics methods, tests of independence and of correlation strength. Qualitative data were analysed with content analysis. The results from the structured questions showed that well-functioning collaboration was associated with clear boundaries between principals in the county overall, and for respondents in two of three parts of the county. Association between clear boundaries between professions and well-functioning collaboration was found in the county overall among the municipality population. However, in one part of the county, we did not find any correlations between well-functioning collaboration and clear boundaries between professions or principals, with the exception of home help services. The analysis of the open questions gave similar results as the quantitative analysis, illustrated within three themes: The significance of concepts, trust and interdependence, and collaboration as a means for well-being. The results indicate that, recently after an organisational change, clear boundaries between the principals' areas of responsibility and professions' area of responsibility respectively are necessary for effective cooperation between professionals. If the organisation and professionals have previous positive experience of colocated activities, clear boundaries do not share the same importance.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to, from a perspective of power, understand and interpret Swedish social workers experiences and comprehension of their clients trust in them. The study is based on interviews with eight social workers from two municipalities in the south of Sweden. Five themes were identified that represents the five different forms of power which the social workers used on a daily basis. The themes were: normalization, demands and control, the social worker as an expert, the conflict between bio power and disciplinary power and the transparency of power. The analyzis of this study is based on the comprehension of hermeneutics as well as previous research on trust and power in client relationships. As a conclusion we found that whether the interviewees stated that their work was about the exercise of power or not, we could still identify that all of them used some form of power on a daily basis. We also saw that trust was not always the essential part of a working client relationship. Through this study, and by using the theory of power by Michel Foucault, we found that power therefore is something that exists in all relationships whether you believe you exercise it or not.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to get an increased understanding regarding how carers relate to consent while working with people who has dementia. The study asks the following questions: How does the carers understand the concept of consent associated with giving care to people with dementia? What is considered by the carers in connection to consenting to caregiving by people with dementia? And lastly, how does consent mediate between carers and people with dementia? It had a hermeneutic and qualitative scientific approach. The data was collected through three focus groups with carers and then analyzed according to Jens Rennstam and David Wästerfors (2015) method of analysis. The theoretical analysis was performed with three different theoretical aspects called: Scope for action and relationship, Being a client and relational power. The authors of the theoretical aspects were Kerstin Svensson, Eva Johnsson and Leili Laanemets (2014), Roine Johansson (2007), Katarina Jacobsson, Joakim Thelander and David Wästerfors (2010) and also Mats Franzén (2010). The main conclusion of this study was that the carers used body language and had to phrase their questions well towards the people with dementia regarding if they consented to let them help or not. The relationship between carers and the people with dementia was vital - without it consent was very hard to reach.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to understand which strategies helped women escape honourbased violence, by reading the autobiographies of seven women. Honourbased violence is a relatively new problem in Sweden, but it has existed for a long time. According to FN (2012) 5000 women are murdered every year in the name of honour. Honourbased violence is about maintaining the honour of the family. Womens sexuality is connected to men´s honour, and because of that they are not allowed to express it. They are being under constant control and surveillance by their family, to make sure they don´t violate the line. The father of the family has the right to make all the decisions of the whole family. In some cases, this leads to woman wanting liberation and successfully escape, starting a new life. In this study we wanted to investigate which persons and organizations meant the most to those women, during their journey. The study also investigates which strategies they used to become free. To help us analyze our result we used a theory based on power. We mean that honourbased violence rely on power and it´s structures, to maintain men´s power over women. We used a qualitative method using textual analyses. Results show that both single individuals and also organizations helped them escape. The most important strategies turned out to be hope, acceptance, denial, isolation, escape, resistance and even suicide attempt.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to increase the understanding of why young women use sex as a form of self-injury. The empiricism consists of fifteen life stories either written by the young women themselves or with the help of an author. The study is based on a narrative method and the theoretical framework is founded on Goffman’s role theory; Goffman’s theory of social stigma and the concept of shame. The result of the study shows among other things that the young women often describe themselves as disgusting, filthy and have feelings of self- hatred and shame. They self-harm through sexual intercourse or acts as a way to regulate and relieve anxiety, but it only helps in the short run as the anxiety tends to get even stronger than before which leads to more self-harm. The young women often end up in a vicious circle that is hard to break. Furthermore the young women describe their upbringings lacking the presence and love of their parents.

    Abstract [en]

Psychiatric compulsory care is a complex field. It could be argued that the first and foremost difficulty lies in challenging the autonomy of the patients. The care includes control and restrictions, while simultaneously seeking cooperation and improvement from the patient; creating a very difficult surrounding. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand how inpatients handled the complex context within the psychiatric compulsory care. Our study was a document analysis, where we analyzed blogs written by current and former inpatients. We analyzed the data using Lazarus theory about how people cope with internal and external stress in difficult situations. Within the theory, a number of different strategies as to how people cope with these situations are described. We identified three main strategies to manage the compulsory care; acceptance, avoidance and making time pass. We also identified unique ways of managing the care; using humor, writing on the blog and viewing the care as separated from their “normal world”. To sum up the main conclusions, we found that coping seemed to be a constantly changing process including different strategies, both emotional and behavioral. Lastly, our study showed that the context a person is in matters; the patients handled the situation with the possibilities within the compulsory care, and also seemed to create their own ways to cope.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe and understand parents’ perspectives in aid assessment for children according to The Swedish Act (1993:387) concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments (Lag 1993:387 om stöd och service till vissa funktionshindrade, LSS). The study took place in the county of Kronoberg, Sweden, and was based on a total of nine qualitative interviews. Four interviews were made with parents’ of children who has interventions according to LSS (1993:387) and five interviews were made with LSS case workers. In our study we saw that parents’ perspectives often is the largest amount of information that case workers take into account when assessing aid and as a case worker you listen to the parents perspectives to capture the child’s and the family’s needs. It also came clear that the parents’ perspective is not only about the child’s needs, but also includes the parent’s own needs and their family’s needs. The parents in the study felt that they made the decision about the choice of aid and considered themselves as the one who decides the family’s requirements. It turned out that treatment and understanding from the case workers was important for gaining access to the best help and making parents feel listened to. Parental responsibility was of great importance for the assessment, and it often led to disagreement between parents and case workers. During the study, we saw that power existed in the relationship between case workers and parents, but that it could be moved and changed during the time of aid assessment.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to create an understanding about what kind of knowledge social workers, that work in social services, use in determining a child's participation in an investigation with the focus on the child's maturity and age. We also had the aim to get an understanding about if the reasoning about a child's maturity could lead to learning. With a qualitative approach and with semi structured interviews, seven social workers were interviewed. We were inspired of an hermeneutical approach. As the theoretical starting point, the concepts of knowledge, discretion and learning were used to analyze our data.

The conclusion of this study was that social workers use a combination of several knowledge forms when assessing children's participation based on maturity.

Tacit knowledge, scientific knowledge and institutionalized knowledge were used mainly to gather information to assess the maturity of the children. Articulated knowledge and bodily knowledge were used in the reasoning in how to make children participated. The use of several forms of knowledge in combination with the reasoning of children's participation based on maturation leads to learning. However, the social workers implied that the children's participation wasn’t depending on maturity, rather that maturity only determined in which way the child was going to be participated.

The aim of this study was, that from a view of professional's understand the meanings of including horses in therapy. In order to achieve the aim of the study, qualitative method was used and therewith interviews was performed with professionals who work with equine- assisted therapy. The professionals did also have an education which allowed them to independently treat clients and besides that at least five years of experience of equine- assisted therapy. The issues of the study was to understand the professionals’ view of the horses role in equine-assisted therapy, which opportunities and constraints professionals consider that equine-assisted therapy entails and also if the horse could bring something unique to therapy. The empirical material was thematised and analysed with help of previously research and by theories of Meads and Goffman. The findings of the study was that the horse was described as a colleague and that the horse had an impact on the role as a therapist. The horse was described to have an impact on the therapeutic work which facilitated the professionals’ communication, relations and conversations about feelings with the clients. There was descriptions about the importance of the professionals’ competence, which meant that they had to possess knowledge about both horses and treatment work. Insufficient knowledge was described as almost the only critical aspect using horses in therapy. The environment around the horses seemed to play an important role, which led to reflections about whether the horse's participation was compensable and if the horse could be replaced by other complements. At last the informants described that professionals’ today don’t use horses in enough extent. The conclusion was that the informants didn’t describe one, but different and several meanings of the horse’s participation. Which meant that no concrete conclusion to this study exist. Perhaps, other methods could be used to understand the meaning of including the horse in therapy.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to conduct a discourse analysis of how school and social services professionals talk about/explains honour-related violence and oppression. The analysis was complemented by an intersectional perspective. The study was conducted through semi-structured qualitative interviews with eight people working in schools and social services. The material from the interviews was analyzed through Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework and intersectional theory. We concluded that the discourse about honour-related violence should be understood as multi-faceted. The complexity of the discourse is exemplified by the different positions and the consequences these risk to lead to. We found a difference in how the school and social services staff explain and give content to honour-related violence and oppression. School staff had a tendency to explain honour-related violence and oppression as something which only occurs in certain cultures. Social services staff, on the other hand, wanted to explain honour-related violence as a universal oppression against women. Our study shows that honour-related violence and oppression are primarily understood as men as perpetrators of violence and women as victims. A view that renounces women as perpetrators and men as victims. Through this study it is possible to understand the problem of finding a definition of honour-related violence and oppression, and why it is so debated. We propose future studies concerning young people's experiences of living in a context characterized by honour-related violence and oppression. We also propose research concerning HBTQ issues related to honour-related violence and oppression.

    Abstract [en]

In all times and in all societies, there have been children who for various reasons have not been able to grow up with their biological parents. The solutions to the problems have varied; in Sweden, most of the children have been placed in foster care. Because of the act regulating state childcare passed in 1926, child welfare boards were established in the municipalities. These boards were responsible for placing children with foster parents and for supervising foster homes. Foster parents were required to be suitable in order to be allowed to take care of a foster child. This article analyzes conceptions of foster parents’ suitability in relation to perceptions of foster children’s needs during the twentieth century. This study is based on document analysis of the child welfare practice. Via a long-term analysis, the study reveals continuity as well as changes over time. Major changes took place in the 1960s and 1970s with new requirements on foster parents due to changes in which children were placed in care and changing perceptions of childhood and parenthood in the society.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

When a parent dies: a systematic review of the effects of support programs for parentally bereaved children and their caregivers2017In: BMC Palliative Care, ISSN 1472-684X, E-ISSN 1472-684X, Vol. 16, p. 1-15, article id 39Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The death of a parent is a highly stressful life event for bereaved children. Several studies have shown an increased risk of mental ill-health and psychosocial problems among affected children. The aims of this study were to systematically review studies about effective support interventions for parentally bereaved children and to identify gaps in the research.

Methods: The review’s inclusion criteria were comparative studies with samples of parentally bereaved children. The focus of these studies were assessments of the effects on children of a bereavement support intervention. The intervention was directed towards children 0–18 years;but it could also target the children’s remaining parent/caregiver. The study included an outcome measure that dealt with effects of the intervention on children. The following electronic databases were searched up to and including November 2015: PubMed, PsycINFO, Cinahl, PILOTS, ProQuest Sociology (Sociological Abstracts and Social Services Abstracts). The included studies were analysed and summarized based on the following categories: type of intervention, reference and grade of evidence, study population, evaluation design, measure, outcome variable and findings as effect size within and between groups.

Results: One thousand, seven hundred and six abstracts were examined. Following the selection process, 17 studies were included. The included studies consisted of 15 randomized controlled studies, while one study employed a quasi-experimental and one study a pre-post-test design. Thirteen studies provided strong evidence with regards to the quality of the studies due to the grade criteria; three studies provided fairly strong evidence and one study provided weaker evidence. The included studies were published between 1985 and 2015, with the majority published 2000 onwards. The studies were published within several disciplines such as psychology, social work, medicine and psychiatry, which illustrates that support for bereaved children is relevant for different professions. The interventions were based on various forms of support: group interventions for the children, family interventions, guidance for parents and camp activities for children. In fourteen studies, the interventions were directed at both children and their remaining parents. These studies revealed that when parents are supported, they can demonstrate an enhanced capacity to support their children. In three studies, the interventions were primarily directed at the bereaved children. The results showed positive between group effects both for children and caregivers in several areas, namely large effects for children’s traumatic grief and parent’s feelings of being supported; medium effects for parental warmth, positive parenting, parent’s mental health, grief discussions in the family, and children’s health. There were small effects on several outcomes, for example children’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, anxiety, depression, self-esteem and behaviour problems. There were studies that did not show effects on some measures, namely depression, present grief, and for the subgroup boys on anxiety, depression, internalizing and externalizing.

Conclusions: The results indicate that relatively brief interventions can prevent children from developing more severe problems after the loss of a parent, such as traumatic grief and mental health problems. Studies have shown positive effects for both children’s and remaining caregiver’s health. Further research is required including how best to support younger bereaved children. There is also a need for more empirically rigorous effect studies in this area.

Supported Visitation in Cases of Violence: Political Intentions and Local Practice in Sweden2018In: International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family, ISSN 1360-9939, E-ISSN 1464-3707, Vol. 32, no 3, p. 374-393Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, supervised visitation has been replaced with a new measure called supported visitation. In the reform process, it was emphasized that if face to face visitation cannot be organized without risk for the child, indirect visitation or no visitation are to be considered better options. The aim of this article is to explore social work practice regarding supported visitation in cases involving violence. It draws on a study of a local visitation centre and the data consists of case files from the social services regarding 37 children where a court ordered visitation support, interviews with seven members of staff, ten parents and three children, and local documents and guidelines. For 18 of the 37 children, case files contained credible information about a history of violence. The study shows that district courts sometimes order visitation support in cases where there is a risk for the child and where in the near future normalization of visitation is unlikely. Thus, the measure of visitation support is sometimes used in a way that was not intended. Regarding social work practice, the analysis indicates that, although the guidelines developed at the local support centre under study adhere to the national policy intentions, both professionals’ validation and invalidation of violence can be seen. For service users previously subjected to violence, the documented court and social services’ practices may actively contribute to children’s and residential parents’ continued vulnerability.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Hemma-hos-insats för barnfamiljer: Förekomst, variation, innebörd2015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The article aims to highlight Swedish children's health in relation to high intensity custody disputes and to relate the results to international research. Empirical data consist of district court acts and parent interviews, explored through qualitative content analysis. Regardless of empirical material, the results indicate that children's reactions are internalizing but also externalizing and somatic symptoms. There are also children who react through a developmental delay or regression. In addition, the results show that children with disabilities are over-represented. The results are in line with previous international research indicating that there is a connection between the children's health, the duration of the conflict, the parents' health and parental ability. Younger children living with parental custody disputes need attention from a health perspective e.g. by preventive interventions.

Parents in child custody disputes: Why are they disputing?2017In: Journal of Child Custody, ISSN 1537-9418, Vol. 14, no 2-3, p. 134-150Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since 2000, the number of custody disputes has increased in Sweden. Living in the midst of a parental conflict places the children under great stress. Research on parental conflicts is predominantly theoretical, thus there is a need for empirical studies to better understand the problems and needs of the children and parents. This article examines parental disputes regarding custody, residence, and access for children, and aims to understand the characteristics of the conflicts behind the disputes. The article is primarily based on qualitative analyses of court documents. The results show that the majority of the parents’ conflicts are defined as conflicts of values, stemming from concern about the other parent’s capability to care for younger children.
