Motivation in the English classroom: A study of how English teachers work with motivating their students2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to find out what motivation in a school environment actually means and how practicing teachers work with trying to motivate their students to learn English. Interviews were performed with three English teachers from different levels and municipalities in Sweden using qualitative and semi-structured questions. It was found that the teachers have both different and similar views on how to work with motivating their students. It is suggested that there are different kinds of motivation and that motivation is a vital part of the work a teacher does. Furthermore, there are numerous methods to apply to a class, and teachers have to try and develop a feeling for which ones to use.

    Keywords: Learning English, motivation, methods.

Across the Nightingale Floor: Challenging the conceptions of gender2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay deals with the protagonists‟ challenges of the conceptions of gender in the novel Across the Nightingale Floor, by Australian author Gillian Rubinstein who uses the pseudonym Lian Hearn (2002). The protagonists are analyzed from a feminist and gender theoretical point of view, pinpointing the actions and thoughts that challenge the conceptions of gender in their society. Main focus is on Otori Takeo and Shirakawa Kaede, who defy the conceptions of femininity and masculinity within their sex, and how the characters gender identities change from the beginning to the end of the novel, and what causes these changes.

När metropoliten flög över Atlanten och blev kosmopolit: Woody Allens skildring av europeiska storstäder2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Dessa filmer är Match Point (2006), Scoop (2007), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), Midnight in Paris (2011) och To Rome With Love (2012).

Transformation?: A case study of teacher trainees' views on their future work as teachers compared to new teachers' views on their work2011Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to find out if there are any differences between what teacher trainees expect and what teachers claim in a number of areas in English teaching at upper secondary schools. More specifically, are there any differences in expectations and claims between the two groups when it comes to the use of course books, the national tests, setting grades, grammar teaching and the use of movies in course A English. The involved trainees were on their last year of teacher training and the involved teachers had worked for a maximum of two years. In order to carry out the research, both quantitative- and qualitative interviews with teacher trainees and teachers were done. In the quantitative interviews, trainees and teachers answered questions about the mentioned topics and were also asked to write what they expect or claim to be the most difficult and easy area in the English teaching classroom. In addition, the qualitative interviews with six trainees and teachers gave voices to what the two groups declared. According to my findings, there are differences in all but one topic. The conclusion also suggests what can be made in teacher training education in order to declare the gap between trainees and teachers become smaller.

Var är meningen?: Elevtexter och undervisningspraktiker2012Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This is about how pupils in years 4 to 6 of compulsory school and their teachers make meaning in teaching activities and texts. The aim of the study is to investigate the teaching and learning of writing and the pupils’ discursive texts. Another aim is to use linguistic theories and develop methods and analytical concepts for studying teaching practices.

Sources for the material are the teaching practices in two classes, the teachers and the pupils. The field studies lasted for two years, consisting of observations and interviews. Twelve pupils’ texts and four writing projects are studied in depth.

The theoretical framework is linked to systemic functional linguistics, critical discourse analysis, dialogical conception of language and new literacy studies. Analytical tools are also derived from rhetorical structure theory, relief theory and theory of text sequences. These tools have been adapted and are also applied in the analysis of the teaching practice. To analyse pupils’ meaning making in their texts, a theory of mobility in texts is used.

The analyses show two different categories of texts and teaching practices. The hierarchically composed texts are characterized by hierarchies concerning the entire text. The sequentially coupled texts are characterized by many vague relations between text entities. One conclusion is that the students in the hierarchically composed texts develop knowledge during writing. They make meaning recursively when writing and they seem to grasp the text as a whole in a way they do not in the sequentially coupled ones. In the sequentially coupled texts, pupils seem to develop knowledge mostly before they write the text, rather than during the writing. In the hierarchically composed practice the pupils deepen their knowledge about text.

The result can be interpreted as showing that pupils primarily need education about global text levels in order to develop text knowledge and subject knowledge. Teaching practice seems to promote all pupils’ meaning making if the practice is characterized by many interpersonal relations in the chains of spoken and written texts and if pupils learn to write texts that can structure their meaning making in a functional way.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay deals with translation issues arising when translating a German source text dealing with the field of riding history into Swedish. More specifically, the analysis focuses on translation problems and solutions in regard to figures of speech, namely metaphors, metonymies and similies.

The metaphors in the source text were divided into three categories depending on their origin, whether they were lexical, conventional or private metaphors. Also the translations of the figures of speech were divided into three categories depending on how the translations were made. The first is called sensu stricto, because the image in the source and the target language correspond here. The second category is called substitution because the image in the source language is shown with another image in the target language. The last category is called paraphrase because the image in the source language is translated with a non figurative expression.

Tempusanvändning i skrift - en jämförelsestudie av första- ochandraspråkselever2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Die Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs und die Schwedendemokraten: ein Vergleich rechtspopulistischer Parteien in Österreich und Schweden2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [de]

Las batallas en el desierto: El amor, la modernización y Estados Unidos2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The following essay deals with three principal and relevant topics regarding the cultural and social changes that took place while Mexico entered the period of modernization in the 1940’s. Influenced and inspired by the United States, Mexico begun its journey towards a modern country. These particular themes are love, modernization and United States and can be found in the novel Las batallas en el desierto (1981), by the Mexican writer José Emilio Pacheco.

The hypothesis of this essay is to presume that this literary work is inspired by the surrounding environment and the existing reality of Mexico in the 1940’s but also by the time it was written. Each topic is a contributing factor to both a concern and a curiosity for the social and cultural changes that might appear in the country.

Our analysis shows, by and using a structural semiotic method, that it’s possible to observe the various opinions expressed through the characters. It’s also possible to distinguish a personification of the countries.

    Abstract

The following study is about some of the factors that influence a correct using of the subjunctive mood and what type of clauses with subjunctive that Swedish students at university level find the hardest.

The aim of this essay is to investigate some of the factors that affect the application of the subjunctive mood. This study also attempts to show a tendency of what kind of sentences that Swedish students have most problems with.

This study is carried out with 97 students from three Swedish universities. They have all studied Spanish between six months and one year and a half at university level. This investigation contains a questionnaire in two parts. The first part is constructed with general questions about the ability of the informants regarding the subjunctive mood and the second part contains a test of knowledge of this grammatical phenomenon. The informants had to choose between verbs in the indicative or the subjunctive mood.

The answers of this questionnaire were used to find out which factors were of greatest importance for the application of the subjunctive. With the help of the questionnaire, the most difficult clauses with subjunctive from the test could be distinguished.

The results of the investigation show that the most significant factor that influences on the application of the subjunctive mood is the student’s own estimation of the ability to write Spanish. It was also clear that the subjunctive clauses formed by time conjunctions were considered the hardest ones by the students.

¿Mujeres poderosas?: Los personajes femeninos en Como agua para chocolate de Laura Esquivel2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This literary essay attempts to analyze the novel Como agua para chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate) written by Laura Esquivel. The focal point here lies in four of the female characters, how they are represented and if they possess or lack power. The power, the development of the characters and their struggle for independence are the main points of the analysis of this particular novel. Moreover, before the analysis, the feminist literary criticism, the characteristics of posboom and the authoress are represented along with the definition of power, the dynamic/static character and magic realism. The analysis demonstrates the gaining power of the main character Tita and her oldest sister Gertrudis. With certain transgressions they receive the power their mother once had. These transgressions help develop the two sisters and the result is self-realization and happiness.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The objective pursued with this essay is to show an efficient didactic way of how to use various social networks and e-mail in the acquisition of Spanish as a foreign language. Theoretical investigations have been conducted in various literary sources and an empirical study have been conducted that yielded interesting data.

In this essay we describe various linguistic contributions that give support to our four didactic proposals in which we seek the student’s immersion in the target language in anauthentic and motivating way.

With this investigation we can conclude that the responsible and focused use of the social networks in the Spanish as a foreign language lessons, contributes to building a multicultural environment among students that overcome the geographic and cultural barriers of language, which could easily make learning more efficient.

    Abstract [en]

The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a postcolonial novel that, in this essay, is argued to challenge and question the colonial stereotypes which came into greater focus after 9/11 in America. The challenge is carried out via the narrator’s identity struggle by displaying the different stereotypes he is subjected to. The quiet listener to the narrator’s monologue, together with the reader’s part in creating and making sense of the novel also contributes towards challenging these stereotypes. The East and West are set against each other, displaying how both have harsh and generalizing views of the other.

Aspects of code-switching: for a Spanish-English bilingual child2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay has analyzed under what circumstances a Spanish-English bilingual child code-switches and if there are any differences between the languages when it occurs. The essay will examine in more detail if the switching involves any particular word class and if the code-switching develops or change over time. This essay defines bilingualism and code-switching, explaining what they mean and how they emerge. These aspects of bilingualism give the reader a wider view of the subject and these aspects also explain how these terms relate to one and another. The data that has been used for this essay is taken from a child language corpus called CHILDES, which can be found on the Internet. The data has been used to carry out a study on this bilingual child at the age of one year and three months up to the age of two years and six months. This is therefore called a longitudinal study because it follows a child over a long period. The purpose of this study was to see which word classes that the girl code-switched to in both her languages. The results will show the use of different word classes at different ages and the percentage of code-switching in both languages. The results shows that the child code-switched during all conversations in Spanish, but she did not code-switch during all the English conversations, which implies that English is the dominant language for the girl.

The award-winning Norwegian novelist Karl Ove Knausgård achieved great success with his latest book, Min kamp. Both commercially and critically, the novel was praised for its seemingly successful attempt to transcend the boundary between fiction and real life. Focusing on the auto-fictional narrator’s struggle to balance his daily life with his ever so demanding aesthetic ambitions, the novel gives high-detail descriptions of the most basic day-to-day chores, intimately mixed with philosophical reflections on topics such as painting, literature and postmodern civilisation.

This essay proposes an alternative perspective on the realism of the novel. Instead of relying on a correspondence theoretical view, which highlights the level of correspondence of a particular representation with reality, I seek, inspired by Martin Heidegger’s thoughts on works of art, to trace a poetics which sees the verity in a work of art as the ”unconcealment” of the world, or the coming-to-being of objects. The function of art in relation to reality is to ”open up” the conventionally understood world and offer a perspective situated between an intellect-based outlook on the world and an intuitive and subconscious one.

In order to carefully analyse the formal manifestation of the poetics in question, I turn to the notion of heteromediality, which proves fruitful in distinguishing, in the verbal text itself, certain formal traits usually associated with other media. I suggest that when found in the text, these traits function as a way of stressing the becoming of objects, rather than primarily their mere existence.

Den mångfacetterade vampyren: En undersökning av vampyrens roll i min roman2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The first vampire film I ever saw was Interview with a vampire. “I haven’t been human for two hundred years”, opened up not only the film, but a whole new world I knew nothing about. The world, as it were, opened its doors to me again after I had seen the film adaption of Stephenie Meyers Twilight. I decided to write down a few thoughts, capture my frame of mind, and these paragraphs then turned into a text: “I tankarnas skal”.

When I did research for this essay I discovered that my text held certain similarities with the modern vampire novel. Because my story is so closely connected to Meyers Twilight, my character Jennie projects the story of human Bella and vampire Edward onto her own life; I have chosen to focus on Twilight and the Twilight-saga as primary sources of comparison with my own text. Jennies healthy philosophies, after seeing Twilight, soon turns into disturbing thoughts in a mind damaged by her unkind reality. Jennie starts hallucinating, seeing Edward everywhere, and this is the object of my investigation. Ever since the legend of the vampire was transformed in the literary world, vampires have acted as symbols for everything between Aids and terrorist threats. Therefore I examined my Edward to see what symbolic role he had in my story.

I chose three themes to further explore the connection between my text and Meyers Twilight-saga, thereby unveiling the warning-signs that Edward personify, on Jennie’s road to her death.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? En adaptionsstudie med Watchmen som utgångspunkt2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Lärares pedagogiska val i undervisningen med vuxna illitterata andraspråksinlärare2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Läsförståelse hos svenska gymnasieelever: En undersökning av hur gymnasieelever som läst svenska B respektive svenska som andraspråk B klarar TISUS-testets läsförståelsedel2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This paper aims to examine reading comprehension among Swedish Upper Secondary School

students who are doing their last school year. My research questions are if the students have

sufficient reading comprehension to cope with university studies and higher education

according to a comprehension test and if there is a difference between students who studied

Swedish B course or Swedish as a second language B course. Furthermore it involves issues

of differences in results depending on gender and if the second-language students were born

    in Sweden or abroad.

To get answers to my questions, I let 112 students in my survey carry out the reading

comprehension part of the TISUS test, observed several test sessions, and interviewed 24

students who participated in the test. The result shows that most students have difficulties

with the reading comprehension, and probably would find it difficult to study at universities

or colleges. There are major differences in the results between the Swedish B-students and

Swedish as a second language students, but also within these groupings. The students in

    theoretical programs

managethe reading comprehension test to a greater extent than the

students on practical programs, whether they had studied Swedish B or Swedish as a second

    language B.

Inadequaciesin vocabulary, reading rate and comprehension strategies appear to

be the main cause of low test results. Differences between the results of the men and women

can also be discerned but the most surprising result is that second language students who were

born abroad manage the reading comprehension test better than second language students

    born in Sweden.
