    Abstract [sv]

The Extension and Limits of the Duty to Rescue2011In: Public Reason, ISSN 2065-7285, E-ISSN 2065-8958, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 39-49Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

While many people believe that we have a moral duty to rescue another human being from a mortal danger when we can do so at little cost to ourselves or to other persons, there is less agreement concerning the extension and limits of this duty. When do we have a duty to rescue? What exactly is meant by “little cost”? In this paper we will examine a consequentialist as well as a deontological way of approaching the duty to rescue. We will point to some significant problems for both versions, but also indicate a way in which at least the deontological position can be improved. Finally, we will try to indicate how the duty to rescue may be applied to the international scene.

The Morality of Humanitarian Interventions2011In: ID: International Dialogue A Multidisciplinary Journal of World Affairs, ISSN 2155-160X, Vol. 1, p. 23-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I develop an argument to the effect that humanitarian moral interventions,

far from being inconsistent with the normative framework of just war, fit in very well with

the justifying conditions of this framework. The argument develops by considering three

objections against humanitarian military interventions, emanating from just war criteria.

The criteria in question are just authority, just cause, and non-combatant immunity. It

will be argued that while just authority logically depends on just cause and has no

independent argumentative force of its own, the criterion of just cause should be

understood to include a defence of human rights or vital human interests and not only of

national sovereignty. As for the criterion of non-combatant immunity, it will be argued

that the unintended killing or injuring of innocent non-combatants can be dealt with by

means of a modified version of the doctrine of double effect. Moreover, the moral

responsibility for unintended innocent victims of an intervention should rest with the

repressive regimes that made the intervention necessary in the first place. By relating

humanitarian military interventions to the criteria of just war and to human rights, the

argument developed here places the justification of such interventions at the centre of

    contemporary moral discourse.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis is a study and an evaluation of the planning and implementation of the targeted marketing campaign "Småbarnsföräldern" at a public library. The analysis is based on the following questions:

 What goals does the library have with the marketing campaign "Småbarnsföräldern"?

 How has the library chosen to plan and implement the marketing campaign "Småbarnsföräldern" and what role have the users had in this process?

 What is the internal result of the library’s marketing campaign – how did the staff experience the marketing campaign "Småbarnsföräldern"?

 What is the external result – how did the target group, the parents of young children, experience the marketing campaign "Småbarnsföräldern"?

The method is based on a case study of a single library with a series of interviews and document analysis. The study reveals that it´s difficult to plan a marketing campaign against a target group. The target group, the parents of young children, didn’t observe the marketing campaign, two informants had noticed the poster but didn’t pay much attention to it. No informant indicated that the campaign had prompted them to change their way of using the library. Lack of time is one reason.

The National School Nutrition Programme and its affects on schooling for farm workers in South Africa: -An investigation of two generations living and working on wine farms in the rural areas of Western Cape2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, I study the effects of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) on the rural areas of Western Cape, South Africa. More precisely I try to find out how the NSNP has affected the families in this rural area and what attitudes that can be found among the two generations of people living and working on wine farms. The reason for this investigation is that NSNP was set up to increase school attendance among children living in an exposed socioeconomic environment, and I wanted to see how much the NSNP affect people’s daily life, with focus on the ones living on/near wine farms in the more rural areas in Western Cape since these areas holds socioeconomic groups that are exposed in the society.

To answer the research questions, I conducted several interviews with both wine farm workers and pupils living on/near a wine farm. But oral history is more than a method! I wanted to look upon the history from a grassroots perspective with a special focus on the working class, ethnic minorities and women´s part in the history.  My theory is based upon the terms Welfare and Social inequality. These two perspectives describe access to labor market, poverty, education and income support. These aspects highlight different forms of social exclusion which wine farm workers and pupils living on/near wine farm lives in.

With these methods I found out that the NSNP plays a crucial part in the lives of those who lives in the rural areas of Western Cape. Many pupils go to school just because their parents want it due to lack of food at home. The government’s purpose of the NSNP, to increase the school attendance can be seen in the answers giving to me during interviews with wine farm workers.

Möten i kulturmiljöer: En studie av publika insatser i samband med arkeologiska utgrävningar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is focused on the questions of and responsibility for where, when, how and why communication and meetings through archaeology should take place. I have critically studied Swedish public archaeology through three diverse archaeological excavations, one took place in the end of the 1980s, and two others in 2012.

I have asked for under what circumstances and with which goals the public efforts become possible. I have interviewed leaders for the archaeological excavations and/or the public efforts and questioned how and why they reached out to the public. I also searched for results and effects in order to problematize and value the public activities.

Through interpretation of the researched material it becomes clear that economic issues as well as archaeologists interests and engagements are of vital importance for public archaeology. Co-operation in the local community and archaeological documentation is crucial for the development of archaeology and its role in society.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this dissertation is to review the molding process of the politics that preceeded the work for gender equality which inSwedengathered speed in the early 1970s. Particular focus has been put to how society through legislation, economic and social privileges during the years 1921-1971 affected Swedish women’s possibilities to make a living and to achieve economic independence. In the dissertation three commissions initiated by the government have been analysed, all of which have been considered paramount for Swedish women’s economic emancipation. The stance that has been applied presumes that the way in which a “problem” has been formulated and framed is of importance for which measures will obtain interpretative preference, thus having an influence on both legislation and the politics pursued, and which measures were considered inconceivable. The dissertation demonstrates that different interpretations of the problems, based on disparate values and indisputable suppositions of how women as regards economic issues should be, choose and act, to varying degree and effect converged in the reports presented by the commissions. In the politics applied women were then manouvered into another economic practice than men, but also into different activities for different groups of women.

One of the main arguments in this dissertation is that in spite of the fact that parts of the women’s liberation movement were active in this molding process during the years 1921-1971, it was not the result of liberal and women-friendly politics. Change over time was pushed by governmentality. By, in the commissions analysed, problematising how certain women’s behaviour contributed to major social problems, such as a dropping marriage frequency, decreasing nativity and preventing economy from expanding, the rights and other social benefits would steer them into serving what was regarded as the public good. Thus, during the time period reviwed, Swedish women´s extended rights and other social benefits were not implemented to create possibilities for women to achieve economic independence, but as a means to resolve other superior social problems.

Arbetskraftsinvandringens betydelseför samhället Gislaved: Berättelser om arbetskraftsinvandringen från Jugoslavien tillSvenska Gummifabrik AB i Gislaved 1962-1973.2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

accepterad litteratur i ämnet.

Festivallandskapet i förändring: Siesta! – En liten musikfestival som står när jättarna faller2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The present memorandum outlines the structure, theoretical starting points and disposition of a thesis about the activities of Finnish immigrants in a Swedish local community, more specifically their political integration. The intention is to study the municipality of Katrineholm in the years 1944 to 1991.

Previous research about the actorship of immigrants in spheres such as politics, labour unions, immigrant associations, educational associations and mass-education, as well as churches and religion, is presented to give an overview of possible areas connected to political integration that can be studied. The overview of previous research also covers local immigrant politics.

The intended theoretical starting points for the proposed thesis are political economy and hegemony. The latter is intended to be investigated through its expression in the social relations class, gender, ethnicity, nationality and generation. It is suggested in this memorandum that hegemonies and social relations within a local political economy can be operationalised fruitfully in a study of political integration. Hence, theoretical viewpoints and definitions connected to political integration are also elaborated on.

Methodologically it is suggested that quantitative and qualitative analysis be undertaken to study the sources that the thesis is intended to be based on. Sources such as documents from the exemplified activity fields are to be used. Also, it is suggested that oral sources such as interview be used. Another possible method is a research circle, if preconditions in Katrineholm favour such an approach.

The conclusion of this memorandum is that no previous studies have been undertaken using the approach presented and further that few studies of the local political integration of immigrants exist. Hence, the proposed thesis will make a significant contribution to the study of immigrant actorship, political integration and contributions to the formation of social relations and hegemonies in a local political economy.

Immigration och integration i kommunpolitiken: En studie av immigranters representation avseende förtroendeuppdrag i Växjö Kommun 1971-19912010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present study discusses the political integration of immigrants in local government in the muncipality of Växjö from 1971 to 1991 in the form of representation. The main data source consists of lists of people holding local commissions of trust in the various boards and committés appointed by the municipality council, as well as in the council itself. These data are then compared to population statistics from Statistics Sweden. Main findings of the study are that immigrants are insufficiently represented in relation to their proportion of the population. It is suggested that this is a result of structural discrimination and possibly insufficient socialisation.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about the intersection of great narratives and individual decisions. In the intersection, the dilemma of exile is discussed: to remain in exile or return to one’s homeland. The decision to remain or return was made by the surviving Polish female concentration camp prisoners that were brought back to Sweden in 1945 with the Red Cross rescue operation.

The women’s decisions have been contextualized by being placed against the political, social and economic upheavals that took place primarily in Poland, but also partly in Sweden, as well as in the international environment with which the new Poland had to form a relationship following the Second World War.

The thesis moves between three levels: the micro level, comprising the individuals, their choices and experiences; the macro level, including the surrounding social, economic and political structures; the meso level, which merges the individual, her network and the state. The theoretical framework is on the one hand based on Reinhart Koselleck’s concepts of “realm of experience” and “expectations” that structure the time horizon and refer to the universal, and on the other hand, the sociological concept of generations and Svante Lundberg's model of exile with the concepts of Circumstance, Frame and Meaning. Both Koselleck and Lundberg focus on the individual / group and structural context. Sources used have been material from the Swedish Government and the two Polish governments and their agencies. In addition, a number of Polish and Swedish newspapers published during the period 1945-1947 as well as material from the Polish Source Institute in Lund (PIZ) have been studied. Thirteen in-depth interviews with the surviving women (both in Poland and Sweden) have been carried out, resulting in so-called life stories, with the objective of providing an answer to the question of why some of them remained in Sweden after the war while others returned to Poland. In the women's life stories, some themes can be distinguished: the common realm of experience, being adherent to the same sociological generation with a manifest collective memory (which in part developed differently depending on their decisions to remain or return), a link between war and captivity and expectations for the future. Otherwise, the life stories highlight the women's construction of identity, which is affected by growing up in the between-war Poland, the time during World War II and the occupation. It also reveals that these experiences influenced their decision: remaining and returning.

    Abstract [sv]

Freedom to Divorce or Protection of marriage?: The Divorce Laws in Denmark, Norway and Sweden in the Early Twentieth Century2011In: Journal of Family History, ISSN 0363-1990, E-ISSN 1552-5473, Vol. 36, no 2, p. 191-209Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the period 1909—1927, new laws concerning divorce and marriage were enacted by the Scandinavian countries. Both at the time and more recently, these laws were considered as ‘‘liberal’’ as they promoted greater freedom to divorce based on individuality and gender equality. In this article, the authors first analyze the changes in these Family laws in the early twentieth century. Then, the authors study the effect of these laws on divorce and marriage patterns. As these laws did not modify the trend in divorce rates, the authors ask why this was the case. The authors’ conclusions are that the laws were more concerned with preserving the sanctity of marriage and maintaining social order than with promoting individual freedom and gender equality.

Från papper till pixel: Kvarnholmen studerad utifrån historiska kartor med stöd av GIS2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sweden has a long tradition as a mapmaking nation. Tens of thousands of historical maps, dating from the sixteenth century and onwards are still preserved in archives today, providinga rich resource for studies of city growth and changes in the landscape through time. For morethan ten years an effort has been made by public authorities to transfer this material frompaper onto digital media. Due to modern technology, as for example GeographicalInformation Systems (GIS), researchers have been given improved possibilities to study andanalyze this material. This study uses a qualitative approach, based on both literature studiesas well as map studies. It focuses on the usage of historical maps as well as the problems andpossibilities they provide, both generally in their original form and more specifically in theirdigital form. As an example on how to use historical maps in the analysis of a specific area, four maps of the town of Kalmar have been processed in GIS software to obtain an overallview of the geographical changes the town centre has undergone during a historical periodfrom around 1650 up to 1936. The conducted study has shown that although the accuracy ofhistorical maps is not up to par with modern ones, they provide a useful base in the studies oftown development. If the map studies are supported by examinations of historical literature avery good overview of either a long term development or a more detailed understanding of ashorter time period is obtainable. This study provides an introduction to the usage of historicalmaps in modern landscape studies and an example on what they can be used for.

The environmental context of a prehistoric rock carving on the Bjäre Peninsula, southern Sweden2011In: Journal of Archaeological Science, ISSN 0305-4403, E-ISSN 1095-9238, Vol. 38, no 3, p. 746-752Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Palaeoecological analysis of peat deposits from a small bog at Lingården, southern Sweden, have been used to examine the nature and timing of vegetation changes and anthropogenic activity associated with a nearby rock carving located close to the edge of the wetland. This study is the first of its type to investigate the environmental context of rock carvings in southern Sweden. Debate has tended to focus on chronology and iconography, with little consideration of the environmental relationships of rock carvings and how vegetation may help construct a site within its surrounding landscape. The pollen evidence from Lingården demonstrates that the rock carving was located in an isolated semi-wooded setting during the late Bronze Age. This is in stark contrast to several other pollen studies from the Bjäre Peninsula that record widespread woodland clearance and agricultural activity from the late Neolithic–Bronze Age transition. The results of this study support hypotheses that suggest complex rock carvings, such as Lingården, were separated from settled areas. This sense of separation and isolation is reinforced by the vegetation surrounding the rock carving. This paper also discusses the relationship between charcoal in the pollen sequence and evidence that the decorated outcrop had been burnt.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the conceptualisation of the social relations of class and gender within the Social Democratic Women’s Association during the period 1972 – 1993, on the basis of their programmes for action. The analysis of the concepts is based on an ideology critical study focusing on the manifest ideology.

The study is based upon the theoretical concepts of class and gender,  The class analysis is based upon the broadened concepts of class by Erik Olin Wright and Ira Katznelson. The gender analysis is mainly based upon a Marxist understanding and a critical point of view of Marxism and feminism in the context of patriarchy and capitalism.

The period of the study is where the social democracy is challenged, both by radical socialism and feminist ideology and the economic crisis during the 1980’s, as well as the possible threat of an organised women’s party in Sweden. It is also a period with major changes in the Swedish class structure, especially in the change when married women become a part of the female labour force rather than being housewives.

The results indicate that the use of the concepts of class and gender is mainly sparsely used. The concepts are often paraphrased in varied terms of social equality. Class is clearly more used, and more often implied, than gender. Gender policies are formed from a latent ideology to a more practically oriented policy, without any real progress concerning power and equality, when Sweden at the same time forms policies for gender equality, from which the women’s association could benefit, even though they may not have been the actors of this change. The analysis also indicates that some of the ideological changes within the women’s association are a result of both outside influences from more radical groups as well as ideological crises within the social democracy. In this struggle between class and gender the Social Democratic Women's Association positions itself in between.

Stig Dagerman - Existentialisten: En jämförande studie mellan De Dömdas Ö och fem existentialistiska tänkare2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Is the Swedish author Stig Dagerman an existentialist? This work takes a close look at Dagerman’s novel Island of the Doomed to see if it is possible to consider it an expression of existentialist thinking and to see if it interacts with any specific existentialist tradition. Dagerman’s novel was compared with select works of five existentialist thinkers – Søren Kierkegaard, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus and Karl Jaspers, all read in the light of the four categories of existentialistic thinking identified by the Swedish scholar Lennart Koskinen. All the four categories appeared to be central themes within the novel and a few subcategories were identified. An analysis based on these subcategories showed that the novel had obvious similarities with all of the five existentialistic thinkers. The main conclusion of my work is thus: it is reasonable to consider Stig Dagerman’s novel Island of the Doomed an expression of existentialist thinking, but it doesn’t match any specific existentialist tradition. Dagerman is therefore to be considered an independent existentialist.

    Abstract [en]

The work is about how music can affect the feelings and fantasies of people listening to it and how music can awaken a specific emotion for the listener.

The purpose of the work is to understand why different kind of music can affect people in a certain way, and above all, if it is possible to convey specific emotions to the general listener.

The work is made up of the essay itself but also the creation of seven music pieces that 128 subjects have listened to. The music pieces are from different genres: drama, comedy, romance, horror, action, fantasy and finally adventure. The people first got to listen to the music and then try to figure out the right genre to every song.

There have also been interviews with nine people, all with a background within the film industry. The reason for this was to get to know how they look at the creation of movie soundtrack.

After having examined the subjects’ answers it can be seen that it is possible to convey a specific emotion to a specific song, although not fully succeeded. A lot of the time answers were given that were in line with my own thoughts. In other cases there were a fascinating, almost precise connection to my own thoughts and feelings around the music pieces.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor´s thesis wants to look closer at librarians´ experiences of comics, manga and graphic novels. In order to bring these experiences forward qualitative interviews and the method of phenomenography was used. The material was then examend againstna theory of previous research, revealing that the problems librarians in Sweden face with these media are largely the same as the problems faced by librarians in other parts of the world. It also became clear that the participating librarians held a positive attitude to the presence of comics, manga and graphic novles in their libraries.
