    Abstract [en]

    When seamen from different countries work together there is always a risk of misunderstanding. This affects safety aboard ships. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is any increased safety risk to ships where the cultural aspect high power distance conflicts with high safety approach. This was done with a systematic literature study with focus on qualitative research methodology. The result shows that national culture strongly influences human error, including safety behaviors. Furthermore, the study shows that masters leadership has a major impact on the deck officer's safety behavior and safety attitudes. Authoritarian, disrespectful and dishonest leadership is not beneficial for deck officers from countries with high power distances, nor for multinational deck officers working together. In addition, the study shows that Crew Resource Management does not always work on deck officers from countries with high power distances.

    Abstract [sv]

    Det har florerat olika rykten som säger att sjöbefälen endast arbetar i ett fåtal år efter att de avlagt sin examen.  För att undersöka om det fanns någon substans i detta valde vi att göra en undersökning där vi följde upp personer från tre olika sjökaptensklasser. Samtidigt fann vi det intressant att ta reda på vart de som slutat hade tagit vägen efteråt. Genom utdrag från sjömansregistret i Sverige samt intervjuer sammanställde vi personernas arbetshistorik. Resultatet visade på att sjöbefälen arbetade 25 år i snitt, att det tog 3 år att mönstra överstyrman och 8 år till befälhavare. Ett flertal av dem som gått iland var kvar inom branschen. Som orsak till att de avslutat sin karriär på sjön var det många som menade på att befälhavarjobbet hade blivit ett kontorsarbete samt att familjeskäl hade bidragit. Resultaten får anses vara mer positivt än de uppgifter som figurerat på skolan tidigare.

    Abstract [en]

    The Legionella bacteria cause the so called Legionnaires' disease which is a form of pneumonia with high mortality. The bacterium lives naturally in freshwater lakes and other freshwater sources. According to Smittskyddsinstitutet the bacteria thrives in the temperature interval 20°C - 42°C with an optimal growth at 35°C. However, the bacteria can live in temperatures down to 0°C. In this study we have tried to determine if legionella could be a risk onboard ships. Since testing for legionella bacterium is not required according to regulations, we decided to contact five shipping companies in order to establish if they have ever taken any tests for legionella. Three of those shipping companies had never tested for legionella the other two had tested and found legionella in their drinking water system. Since many components included in the drinking water system were placed in the engine room where the ambient air temperature usually is between 20°C - 42°C, and the fact that the drinking water system often includes long piping’s and many consumers which can lead to standing water, we could conclude that legionella very well could be a risk onboard.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose with this study was to see the Chief Officers point of view, regardless nationality, of the three regulations SOLAS, MARPOL and IBC-code onboard product tankers, and if they have any problems to interpret or follow the regulations regarding the cargo process before, during and after loading.To carry out this study I have been using both the quantitative and the qualitative method. 30 questionnaires were sent out to the Chief Officers with help from two Swedish Shipping Companies. This study was complemented with two interviews with Chief Officers. The result according to respondents showed that experience as Chief Officer have a big roll on how the regulations was used and interpreted onboard. The time pressure and the manning situation are considered to be an obstacle when it comes to follow the regulations. Especially regarding the tankcleaning process, because it is sometimes hard to follow the resting regulation for the seamen. To aid the interpretation of the regulations one of the informants suggested a standardization of the language the regulations onboard are written on.

    Abstract [en]

    We have in this thesis examined the work situation for masters in the Swedish merchant navy focusing on the administrative workload and how said workload have changed since the implementation of the ISM-code. Within the shipping business of today there is a lot of talk about the increasing number of administrative tasks on board and how they have affected the work situation. This made us want to examine if there actually was any such increase and to what extent said increase in that case have affected the work situation both on board and ashore. We have during our survey performed interviews with masters and ship-owner representatives at four companies within the Ro-Pax business who has traffic on Swedish ports asking them about the work situation on board and how it has changed during the last 15 years with respect to the administrative workload. The survey shows a substantial increase in the administrative workload both on board and ashore, mainly as a result of new regulations and vastly improved means of communication between ships and the organization ashore. In general there is a broad acceptance of the benefits of the ISM-code but a widespread skepticism when it comes to other regulations and government requirements. As far as the improved means of communication is concerned the increase in the number of messages received during a regular work day is emphasized and a question is raised whether there are valid reasons for the increase or if it to some extent is a way to clear your own desk by moving a task to another part of the organization.

Dess syfte är även att förklara metodval, presentera källor och diskutera handbokens uppbyggnad och pedagogiska utformning. Under skrivperioden har en kvalitativ metod följts och tonvikten för skapandet av handboken har legat på faktainhämtning och källkritik.Själva handboken riktar sig främst till studenter vid de nautiska programmen, samt nyutexaminerade styrmän.Resultatet presenteras som en bilaga vidhäftad denna uppsats.

    Funktionsbeskrivning av brandlarmsstyrningen i ventilationssystemet ombord korvett av Göteborgsklass2010Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    This is the final report regarding the project A Functional Description of the Fire Alarm Con­trol in the Ventilation System aboard the Swedish Navy’s Gothenburg-class Corvettes, wh­­ich was commissioned by the Senior Marine Engineer Officer of the 41st Corvette Sq­­ua­d­ron of the 4th Naval Warfare Flotilla. The reason for the commission was that the set of documentation concerning the function of the ventilation system in case of a fire was insufficient. This caused problems, both during maintenance work done to en­­­su­re that the system was operating in accordance with the design parameters, as well as when trouble-shooting the system. The insufficient set of documentation was a result of a number of upgrades done to the ships over the ye­ars without any corr­e­s­p­on­ding up­date of the documentation. During the project it has also been made clear that there were non-documented differences existing be­­tween the ships in the class.

    The project was fulfilled by a combination of studies of the existing set of do­cumen­tation and practical surveys aboard the ships. During the surveys, more short­comings in the existing set of documentation became evident.

    The project demonstrated differences between the individual ships, assumed inaccuracies in the control of fans and dampers and determined the shortage in the set of documentation. The project has resulted in a number of describing documents that are collected in one unique file for each ship. These documents fulfil the commission and the objectives of the project.

    A major upgrade of the ships in the class with the purpose of extending their operational lifetime is now being planned. The ships’ set of documentation will be simultaneously updated, a task that will be simplified with the support of the results of this project.

    Abstract [en]

    After our on-board training had been carried out and during almost four years as students on Kalmar Maritime Academy we felt that too little attention had been put on the radar presentation called “Course up”. We felt that this was somewhat of a limitation since the radar has three different presentations with multiple pros and cons. The purpose of this study was to find out the different pros and cons that are applicable to Course up. This was done to see if there are certain situations where it would be positive for the navigator to use Course up, for example in an archipelago or in waters with high traffic density.  We choose three different methods to reach the result we aimed for. The study in itself is qualitative and to collect data we did a simulated test with five students from the senior class at Kalmar Maritime Academy. After the simulated tests we handed out a questionnaire and after the test was done we gathered the respondents for a short group seminar. The result was that all of the respondents who participated could see positive effects when using Course up. Through the use of Course up the respondents felt that it was easier to make quick decisions and through this decreasing the time before the decision is made. Course up would thereby be applicable in traffic situations that call for fast thinking.

    This Projects goal was to develop a manual, which was to be used as help for a fishing company in the making of an SMS (Safety Management System). The manual was going to follow the guidelines presented by the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) and the Swedish Transport Agency.

     

    The projects client was a smaller fishing company that was about to build a fishing vessel.

    The work has been carried out as a project, it was finished within the schedule and the client was most satisfied with the result. The client has used the manual in the making of the Safety Booklet (SMS) and they are now certified according to the rules of the Swedish Transport Agency.

    Abstract

    I have looked at how the workloads are today onboard Swedish tankers. This work has shown the attitude to and the respondents experienced emotions by the time of the vetting inspection but also what this could lead to. During my on board training interviews were made including interviews by mail and for the investigation has also the usage of qualitative and quantitative methods. The investigation has shown that the respondents good attitude to vetting inspections, mostly worrying before the vetting inspection, well preparations, how the vetting inspector actions effects the respondents. The result of the investigation has also shown that it exists some overtime by the time of the vetting inspection.

    Sammanfattning

     

    Vi ville se vad det finns för intressanta vindkraftverk anpassade för stadsmiljö ute på marknaden och vad en framtida investering skulle kunna landa på rent ekonomiskt, men även vad som krävs vid en bygglovsansökan för ett 5kW vindkraftverk.

     

    Vårt huvudsakliga syfte med den här rapporten är att försöka välja ut, enligt oss, två vettiga vindkraftverk och jämföra dessa mot varandra, för att underlätta vid ett framtida beslut om vilket slags vindkraftverk man ska placera på Sjöfarthögskolans tak.

     

    Då taket orsakar ett område med turbulent vind och lägre vindhastighet måste turbinens navhöjd anpassas beroende på var på taket turbinen placeras.

     

    Enviro Energies Mag-Wind 5kW är det verk som vi har varit mest intresserade av utav de som vi har tittat på. Främst beroende på att verket saknar mast, startar vid låga vindhastigheter, det krävs inget direkt fundament och det har en estetik som tilltalar oss. Det fungerar i vindar på 67m/s i upp till två timmar om man har systemet HAWK (High Airspeed Wind Kit) installerat, kan arbeta under ihållande vindar på 41m/s och elproduktion uppnås redan vid 1,8m/s.

     

    Spiralen är precis som Mag-Wind ett vertikalt vindkraftverk, men det sitter på en mast och generatorn är placerad i ett utrymme intill verket och inte i direkt anslutning till verket som fallet är med Mag-Wind verken. Märkeffekten är satt till 4kW, alltså en kilowatt mindre än Mag-Wind, men enligt tillverkarens effektkurva för verket så levererar den strax över märkeffekt vid vindar från 12m/s och uppåt. Spiralen börjar snurra vid 2m/s och levererar el mellan 3-25m/s, alltså nästan som ett vanligt horisontellt vindkraftverk.

     

    Ett komplett 5kW Mag-Wind går i dagsläget på 490 000 kronor exklusive moms och baseras på projektering, installation och montering. I priset ingår komplett vindkraftverk med invertersystem och kontrollenhet för anslutning av dator, Web-baserat system, AC- och DC-brytare, överspänningsskydd, kablage på 15 meter och fri frakt.

    Ett 4kW Spiralen med tillhörande styrbox går på cirka 200 000 kronor. Kost-nader som sedan tillkommer är bland annat för montering och installation, fundament, frakt och kringkostnader för kablage och övrig utrustning.

     

    Ljudnivåerna från Spiralen ger mycket mer att önska jämfört med de uppmätta värden som har angetts för Mag-Wind. Man måste ändå ställa sig lite skeptisk till de redovisade mätvärdena eftersom dessa är utförda av företagen och inte av tredje person.

     

    Höjdmässigt sett så blir Mag-Wind det mest diskreta alternativet eftersom det saknar mast och därmed inte kommer att sticka upp lika mycket som Spiralen.

     

    Utifrån den här jämförelsen så tycker vi att vindkraftverket Mag-Wind är det vettigaste alternativet och att skolan ska satsa på ett sådant.

    Abstract [en]

    Career Event is an annual recruitment fair at the KMA. During the fair, students meet potential employers in the maritime and service industries. Observations and informal conversations made during the previous Career Event, 2011, indicated that there is a need to investigate whether the students at the KMA poses the preparations which is desired by shipping recruitment representatives. In this report, information was collected from interviews with recruiting representatives from eight companies within the Swedish shipping industry. In the interviews the recruitment representatives provides their view of the preparations which they consider to be of importance for the student to be perceived as an interesting candidate for the job.All recruitment representatives believe that preparation is important and can determine whether a job gets appointed. The requirement for preparation varies in parallel with the economy. This means that the student's preparation is of less importance when seeking a vacancy during an economic boom when the number of job seekers is less.It has been found in the results that some preparation is valued higher than others. The individual’s knowledge and structure on papers / certificates and awareness of qualification requirements for the position sought are both considered by all recruitment representatives to be obvious. It was also obvious in the interviews that it is important that the student will present itself through a well written CV and provide an active impression by relevant question asking during the recruitment meeting.It is rare that a student has missed out on an employment due to lack of preparation, but it has during the investigation occurred, by means of preparations, students can improve their chances to get employed for a job in the shipping industry.

    Abstract [en]

    This diploma thesis was made for working out the pro and cons of installing a variable-frequency drive for the sea-water pumps on the ship m/s Finnfellow. The main object of the work was to give the chief engineer of the ship a foundation on which he could decide if it is worth installing this or not.

    The main investigation in the work was to find out how the variable-frequency drive would affect the sea-water system.

    The result of the work was that a considerable amount of electrical energy could be saved yearly (122MWh). This would mean that the installation cost could be repaid in fewer than 2 years with the current fuel prices, also an environmental advantage was discovered because the ship would consume 26 tons of fuel oil less each year.

    The conclusion of the work is that it would be very beneficial to have a variable-frequency drive onboard.

    Dynamic route planning in the Baltic Sea: How can the negative impacts of maritime traffic on sensitive or protected areas be reduced?2012Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Dynamic routing means that ships to a greater extent than today are assigned individual routes based on the traffic situation, weather and other prevailing conditions. Dynamic route planning, in addition to reducing the risk of accidents and ship fuel consumption will also, if used correctly, significantly diminish the adverse impact of shipping on the marine conservation values of sensitive or protected areas. An active and dynamic route planning that takes into account sensitive natural environments in the Baltic Sea is also a way for the shipping industry and shipping administration to interact with the marine spatial planning process necessary to achieve an improved marine environment in accordance with Sweden's environmental objectives, the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) Baltic Sea Action Plan and the EU Baltic Sea Strategy and Maritime Policy. 

    The environmental impact of shipping can be measured on different spatial and temporal scales. The impact of CO2 emissions from shipping on the atmosphere is global, while other types of emissions to air and water may have well-defined regional or local effects. The effects on the marine environment can be direct or indirect, prolonged or short-lived. The environmental effects of shipping may also interact with the environmental effects brought about by other activities. Additionally the effect of a given discharge or emission on the marine environment is not only dependent on the size of the discharge or emission, but also to a great extent on where and when they take place. 

    Dynamic route planning means that trade-offs must be made between different factors. These trade-offs must be part of a holistic approach and rest on a sound factual basis. Decision makers will be faced with situations where they are forced to make a choice between avoiding the risk of direct negative effects on habitats, species and biodiversity and avoiding additional emissions to air. The outcomes of such trade-offs will vary in different areas of the Baltic Sea and at different seasons. 

    Dynamic route planning must be adaptive, i.e., the parties involved must be aware that conservation values, natural resources and the maritime fleet in the Baltic Sea are subject to change and adapt planning to cope with these changes. We now have enough knowledge to start using dynamic route planning to reduce the direct adverse effects of shipping on the marine conservation values of sensitive or protected areas. However, if planning is to be effective and trade-offs between different factors and interests more accurate we need to add to our knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

    SUMMARY

     The project is made on behalf of the company BAR Fastighetsförvaltning AB. BAR intends to replace the heating systems of three adjacent houses. Two new apartments are also planned for construction and therefore BAR wanted to examine the possibility of a heating system with a central boiler. The project was to come up with a technical solution for the system and bring in price from a supplier. In addition, the client wanted to know if solar panels are a profitable supplement to the facility. The results are presented in a price calculation with detailed specifications of the components.

     The result was a wood chip boiler at 50 kW with five storage tanks of 500 litres each. The heat is transferred to the tanks by a pump with constant flow through PEX- pipes.

     A solar heating system with 36 m2 of solar panels divided over the three houses paid itself off during the life expectancy of the equipment. This in the form of reduced fuel costs. Solar heating is thus considered to be a profitable alternative.

    Abstract [en]

    Interviews with experts, in the field of AIS, have been conducted alongside a quantitative survey aimed at certified seagoing officers. The purpose of the survey was to investigate how this navigational aid preferably should be used in collision avoidance, in contrast to how it is used in reality.

    AIS, Automatic Identification System, is an information sharing system to assist in safe navigation by transmitting the own vessels navigational data while, at the same time, receiving corresponding information from other ships. The system is also utilized by land based stations such as VTS-centers and coast guards.

    The investigation shows that experts conclude AIS to be, in many aspects, a good and useful aid which should be used in collaboration with other equipment when assessing risk of collision. Furthermore, the survey show that the ARPA-system, in spite of some internal shortcomings, is awarded more trust than AIS and AIS vectors are therefore rarely used. The survey also shows that a large number of officers are open to deviating from the COLREGs while the experts, in general, advise against it.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to investigate the amount of resources available to us at sea during and after a traumatic event. A survey was sent out to more than 20 Swedish-controlled shipping companies, where they answered questions about their preparedness. A number of interviews were also conducted with the crewmembers that have experienced traumatic events on board. The result of this survey is that the lines appear to be well prepared for the traumatic experience that an emergency situation means. It is also clear that the issue is important for shipping companies.For this study, we can draw the following conclusions:

    • The preparedness is theoretical good from the shipping lines• All crew members should be trained in crisis management and in order to provide support for comrades and adequate care from a psychological point of view• All officers should receive more extensive training in crisis psychology than that which is available at nautical schools today

    Denna empiriska undersökning började utifrån ett antagande om att det inte skedde så mycket kunskapsöverföring ombord på fartyg. Syftet var att ta reda på hur kunskapsöverföring sker mellan däckbefäl ombord. Frågeställningen att ta reda på var om det fanns några direktiv från rederiets kontor, hur såg man på nya och erfarna befäls kunskaper, hur överförde man den tysta kunskapen och hur löste man detta när det var ont om tid?

    Informationen till undersökningen samlades in genom intervjuer och frågeformulär där en objektiv metod användes. Respondenterna valdes från bara ett fartyg då intresset var att se hur det fungerade på just det fartyget.

    Slutsatserna var att det inte skedde någon organiserad kunskapsöverföring ombord på fartyget. Den kunskap som utväxlades var löpande och skedde främst vid informella möten. Man förmedlade kunskapen muntligen och genom att praktiskt utföra vissa moment med övervakande från den erfarne. Det var främst erfarenheten som man ville komma åt vid kunskapsöverförandet.

    Due to the change of simulator and control system a need of a review of the instructions and exercises were needed. The aim of this work was to make up a new instruction manual and optimize the exercises for future maintenance technician classes. At the end of the assignment some simulator conditions were also changed in order to make the course even better for both students and teachers.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to explain a geomagnetic pole shift from a nautical perspective. The chain of events and the time perspective were the main questions that had to be answered. The time perspective needed to be clarified in order to estimate weather a polar shift was of relevance to navigation as it is carried out at present time. It was necessary to investigate the chain of events since it is crucial in estimating what consequences a pole shift will have on navigation. After an initial explanation of the underlying factors such as the cause of our magnetic field and the protection it represents against hazardous radiation from space, together with a qualitative study with underlying literature studies and interviews, the answers to our main questions have been answered. The conclusion of this study is that earth in present time is undergoing a pole shift. The effects on radio traffic and satellite based navigation aids is already a fact. These effects will increase with time and the consequences for present means of nautical navigation will be severe.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to examine how a Navigating Officer should pilot his vessel safely while taking the Collision Regulations (COLREGs) into account whilst in a crossing situation in which a give-way vessel does not give way. We have examined how these situations can be solved by obtaining qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with Navigating Officers from Stena Line, Scandlines and Wallenius. All the officers whom we have interviewed told us that, in their experience, it is common to meet a ship that does not follow the COLREGs. By putting our respondents’ solutions to the test in the ship simulator at Kalmar Maritime Academy we were able to conclude the pros and cons of different approaches to the problem arising in a crossing situation when a give-way vessel coming from port does not give way. Through this process we (the writers) have gained a better understanding as to how the COLREGS should be applied in crossing situations and we hope that all readers can assimilate this knowledge by reading our thesis.

    A Need for Speed?: The view on DP Seatime Reduction Courses2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The use of dynamic positioning (DP) systems onboard vessels today is spreading to non offshore related areas such as heavy lift carriers, luxury yachts and cruise liners etc. As this technology spreads, the demand for skilled DP personnel should increase. In order to get certified, the training scheme for DP operators (DPOs) ends with 180 days of supervised DP watchkeeping experience offshore. A way to reduce the required 180 days is to attend a DP seatime reduction course. The aim of this study was to get the DP industry’s view on seatime reduction courses and also explore if there a need for speed to get certified DPOs on the market. Parties included were the Nautical Institute, International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), one oil company, six offshore shipping companies, accredited DP centres and DPOs across the world. The results showed that although the participants in this study are aware of seatime reduction courses few companies use them regularly, but those who do express satisfaction. The DP industry’s view on seatime reduction courses is positive, however somewhat unclear. Many feel simulator courses in general are good since they can give operators experiences that will take years to achieve onboard. If they should replace seatime gained offshore was doubtful. However, the study showed that seatime reduction courses are needed, especially for trainees working onboard vessels that only occasionally use DP. It has also been recognized that trainee DPOs have a hard time obtaining the required seatime in order to apply for their DPO certificate. This indicates that even though shipping companies in this study do employ trainees, this is not done to the necessary extent. There was also expressed a certain desire to improve the DP training scheme of today in order to achieve a higher quality among DPOs. The study shows there is a need for speed to get more DPOs on the market, but not to the detriment of quality. It is advised that studies are made on DP training quality, given the importance to maintain and even raise the level of competency among DPOs.

    Abstract [en]

    Given that the oil prices have risen and the environmental regulations has become more stringent, the interest in operating efficiency has increased. The project has investigated the possibility of producing electricity from waste heat generated in the diesel process. One technique to utilize and convert energy into electricity is the ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle). This process is based on the Rankine process (the steam process), the difference from the traditional Rankine process is that instead of water as a working medium, an organic substance is used. The main component used in the process is a evaporator, a turbine, a condenser and a pump. Opcon is a company that markets a product based on the ORC technology, called the Powerbox. During autumn 2011 and spring 2012, a feasibility study commissioned by Stena RoRo to investigate whether the Powerbox is suitable for Stenas RoRo ship series Mk II for electricity generation, in terms of economic viability and proper placement on the basis of the necessary peripherals. The survey shows that the Powerbox can be placed on the ship series Mk II. Stena has stated that this investment should have a pay-back time in three years. The Powerbox will be paid off after eight years.

    Abstract [en]

    Turbocharger with variable geometry has for a longtime been used in automobiles, but it was not until 2008 that the first one appeared on a ship. The purpose of this study is to control if the benefits of the VTA-turbo claimed by Man B&W are accurate and to examine if the VTA turbo does have the ability to solve the problems occurring when the ship is moving with reduced speed, so called slowsteaming. To investigate this I have conducted a literature study, with collection of data mostly from the Internet.

    The result of the study shows that a VTA turbo can reduce fuel consumption and emissions at reduced speed compared with a conventional turbo of the same size. The reduction in fuel consumption leads to economic gains. A VTA turbo also eases some of the problems that arise from slowsteaming.

    With the information received, I believe that a VTA turbo is convenient for those ships that use slow steaming. However, to use a VTA turbo on newly built ships in order to slow steam, I consider being a waste of capital and capacity.

    Den svenska handelsflottan blir mindre för var år som går och det betyder färre svenska arbetsplatser till sjöss för svenska sjöbefäl. För den som strävar efter en karriär till sjöss kan det betyda att man får se sig om efter en anställning hos en utländsk redare. Både på Sjöfartshögskolan i Kalmar och ute till sjöss cirkulerar flera historier om att jobba för utländska redare, somliga rosenskimrande, andra nattsvarta. Syftet med det här arbetet var att ta reda på lite privatekonomiska skillnader och likheter angående en vanlig variant av utlandsanställning, anställd på internationaliseringsavtal, i jämförelse med storsjöavtalet som är ramavtal för de olika svenska anställningsavtalen. Tillvägagångssättet var att göra en skrivbordsundersökning där resultatet av sammanställningen delas upp under olika ämnesrubriker. Bland annat framkommer att inkomstmässigt är det en ganska liten skillnad i lön. Den stora skillnaden ligger i att den som jobbar på internationaliseringsavtal (även kallat IT-, INT- och utlandsavtal) betalar inte svensk skatt och blir därmed utförsäkrad från Försäkringskassan. Han eller hon kompenseras istället med privata försäkringar för sjukvård och pension på en likvärdig eller högre nivå än vad som gäller för en anställd på motsvarande svenskt fartyg. Accepterar man den omställningen så erbjuder internationaliseringsavtalet trygga anställningar på utlandsflaggade fartyg.

    Abstract [en]

    This study discusses leadership styles used on ships and aims to determine whether a Specific Goal based Leadership style could be adapted on a modern merchant ship. The theory used in this study, is based on the work in goal setting psychology, by Edwin A. Locke & Gary P. Latham. The primary article we have used, is “Building a Practically Useful Theory of Goal Setting and Task Motivation, A 35-Year Odyssey (2002).

     

    We have carried out a qualitative interview study. The depended variable was the Interviewed students, attending Kalmar Maritime Academy, and their attitude towards an adaption of Specific Goal setting Theory used as management method onboard merchant vessels.

     

    The students were asked to review their experiences of the leadership and management style, from the various ships they have been mustered on, during their education towards officer. The students also answered whether a goal-based leadership had been used onboard.

     

    The results showed that the students in general had a positive attitude towards the Specific goal based management style that the authors presented. Further the study indicated that the authoritarian method of management were the main one used on the various vessels the students had been in contact with. Some vessels had tried variations of goal-based leadership, although none had adapted the specific goal setting that this study aims to implement in maritime management.

     

    In conclusion the authors find the interview study to show a good attitude towards a change in management style onboard merchant ships. Whether the specific goal setting theories that has been widely spread in health care, sports, and industry (Locke & Latham 2002) is the most efficient way, perhaps a future experimental study will show.

    Abstract

     

    Whilst the on- board training was carried out, we considered the amount of training onboard on the behalf of CPR and AED to be unsatisfying.

     

    The purpose of this study is to examine the guidelines for the equipment that should be held onboard, with regard to AED, onboard Swedish, Norwegian and Danish ships with focus on Sweden and Swedish companies.

     

    The method used for this essay was carried out by sending out a question form by e-mail to all companies registered as members of “Sveriges Redareförening”. We sent different questions to the Scandinavian maritime administrations, and also performed interviews.

     

    As shown in the result, 17 of the 22 companies that filled in the form answered that they have at least one AED onboard each of their ships and about half of the companies have had an incident onboard. It is apparent in our studies that no national or international requirements exist which are mandatory.

    Abstract [en]

    The wellbeing of seafarers depends to a certain degree on having a stable family base 

    on land, but seafaring entails by its very nature long breaks from home. The periods of 

    transition between ship and shore have previously been identified as some of the most 

    stressful in this life of living in two worlds. It was the intention of this study to gain 

    information in this area, casting light on the problems which arise, leading to insights 

    into the problem, and suggestions for ways of managing it. This was done with a 

    qualitative study using in depth interviews with Swedish seafarers. The results 

    confirmed this to be a problematic area, but many important means of lessening the 

    distance to home and the turmoil of transitions were brought forward. Communication 

    with family, length of tour and having had family on board were all factors which 

    lessened the impact of transitions.

    Under 2009 bestämde IMO att ECDIS skall föras in på i stort sett samtliga fartygunder en period mellan 2012 och 2018. Detta är något som direkt drabbar styrmännen på fartygen.

    Det jag har riktat in mig på att undersöka är hur pass redo svenska styrmän känner sig, vad de anser behövs samt vad det tycker att en utbildning skall innehålla infördenna övergång. För att komma fram till detta har jag intervjuat svenska styrmän som aktivt arbetar till sjöss. Jag har också gjort en expertintervju med en personsom jobbar med att utbilda sjöfolk i användandet av ECDIS.

    Slutsatserna av arbetet blev att svenska styrmän idag är redo att segla med ECDIS,men att det krävs att det finns bra utbildningar på ECDIS. Både generella och systemspecifika utbildningar som kan ge användaren bättre förutsättningar att använda systemet korrekt. Det skulle också vara bra med en standardisering av ECDIS-systemens grundfunktioner.

    Abstract [en]

    During our final year, we developed an interest in the difficulties we may encounter as marine engineers. This diploma thesis concerns the technical issues that occur due to new regulations concerning the sulphur emissions from merchant vessels. These technical issues are a consequence of the vast property differences between fuel qualities. As a result of these problems, technical solutions have been developed as a countermeasure, of which two have been presented in this comprehensive report.

    In order to identify the difficulties that may arise we analysed the manufacturers experiences in an empirical method. Using the same method we conducted an in-depth interview with a chief engineer in order to take part of his experiences.

    The environmental legislation concerning air pollution from merchant vessels will in a near future be even stricter, thus they will have an increasing impact on the ships operation. Fuel change-overs will be a more frequent event as in some areas distillate fuels are required to meet the demands on low sulphur emissions. At the same time the economical advantages of heavy fuel oil makes it preferable to use in other areas.

    Abstract [en]

    With the new implementation of the ISPS regulations, it is hard to get an insight in the duties of an officer of the seas. How can new students know what they are applying for when they want to become said officers.

        The purpose of this thesis was to examine the underlying expectation about the officer’s job within the Swedish merchant navy. Interviews where carried out on third year students at a maritime academy in Sweden regarding the view of the officer’s job acquired on-board a ship during internship and on-board training. The expectation was later compared to the image of that acquired onboard.

        The results were those that the officer’s job is not like any job on land and that one has to work on board a ship to acquire insight in how the officer’s job truly is.

    Ombord på dagens moderna fartyg finns det oftast en autopilot med trackpilot - funktion. Den behöver information från många olika sensorer för att kunna framföra fartyget utefter en förprogrammerad rutt. Om en av sensorerna inte ger rätt information kan det hända att trackpiloten gör en felbedömning av t.ex. kurs att styra. Ombord på fartyg med DP - system finns det färdiga FMEA - dokument för användaren där man kan läsa vilken åtgärd som kan behövas för att bibehålla DP - klassen. Någon sådan manual har vi inte stött på ombord på vanliga fartyg. Därför ville vi undersöka riskerna med trackpilot och om en FMEA - riskanalys skulle kunna vara användbart för ett trackpilot - system. Vi utförde en FMEA - riskanalys för trackpilot -systemet som finns i Sjöfartshögskolans simulator. De slutsatser som vi kan dra är att, det med hjälp av, en FMEA - riskanalys ger användaren en god inblick i hur olika fel påverkar trackpilot:en.

    I detta arbete har vi jobbat med att konstruera laborationer som är tänkt att ge läraren i digitalteknik kursen ett praktiskt pedagogiskt hjälpmedel.

     

    Dagens undervisning sker med hjälp av simuleringsdataprogrammet Easyveep. I detta dataprogram kan man lösa diverse uppgifter genom att programmera genom ett PLC.

     

    Vi ville med detta arbete konstruera laborationer som utöver PLC programmering även gav eleven praktisk kunskap genom montering av givare, cylindrar mm. Vi ville med andra ord göra en verklig version av Easyveep laborationerna.

     

    Vi satte som mål att vi skulle konstruera två laborationer som skulle kunna användas i undervisningssyfte. Dessa laborationer skulle utgå från pneumatiktavlorna som används i pneumatikundervisningen. Vi satte också som mål att all utrustning var tvungen att kunna återställas för ordinarie undervisning.  

     

    Resultatet av detta arbete blev två fungerande prototyper av bagagelyft laborationen och klossortering laborationen med tillhörande laborationsinstruktioner.

    Abstract [en]

    Theories of ageing predict a trade-off between metabolism, reproduction, and maintenance. Species with low investment in early reproduction are thus expected to be able to evolve more efficient maintenance and repair mechanisms, allowing for a longer potential life span (intrinsic longevity). The erosion of telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of linear chromosomes, plays an important role in cellular and organismal senescence, signalling the onset of age-related disease due to accumulation of unrepaired somatic damage. Using extensive longitudinal data from a long-term study of a natural population of barnacle geese Branta leucopsis, we investigated individual rates of telomere length changes over two years in 34 birds between 0 and 22 years of age, covering almost 80% of the species' lifespan. We show that telomeres in this long-lived bird are very well maintained, as theoretically expected, with an average loss rate of only 5 base pairs per year among adults. We thus found no significant relationship between change in telomere length and age. However, telomeres tended to shorten at a faster pace in juveniles compared to adults. For the first time, we demonstrate a faster telomere attrition rate in females compared to males. We found no correlation between telomere loss rate and adult survival or change in body mass. Our results add further support for a link between longevity and telomere maintenance, and highlight the complexities of telomere dynamics in natural populations.

    Det är sedan tidigare allmänt känt att när temperaturen sänks på luft med en hög luftfuktighet så fälls det ut kondenserat vatten som en restprodukt. Ombord på stora kryssningsfartyg med många passagerare så är behovet av att kyla luften stort på grund av att passagerarna vill ha en behaglig inomhusmiljö, vilket leder till att det i fartygens stora luftkonditioneringsanläggningar bildas mycket vatten när luft kyls. Den här studien syftar till att undersöka om det går att ta tillvara på det vatten som bildas som en restprodukt i luftkonditioneringsanläggningarna. För att ta reda på om kvalitén och kvantiteten var tillräcklig för att det skulle gå att använda vattnet ur en luftkonditioneringsanläggning så togs ett vattenprov från en luftavfuktare. Detta vattenprov analyserades av ett utav Livsmedelverket ackrediterat laboratorium. För att undersöka hur mycket vatten som bildas, kontaktades en stor leverantör av luftkonditioneringsanläggningar för beräkningsunderlag på ett stort kryssningsfartyg. Övrig information har inhämtats genom litteraturstudier och intervjuer. Studien visar på att det är möjligt att använda kondenserat vatten ifrån luftkonditioneringsanläggningar till dricksvatten och tekniskt vatten. I vissa fall motsvarade vattenproduktionen 10-15 % av det totala vattenbehovet ombord på ett stort kryssningsfartyg. Dock visar också studien på att vattnet måste genomgå olika behandlingar innan det går att använda som dricksvatten alternativt tekniskt vatten.

    Abstract [en]

    The task discussed the consequences within the ship’s operation (economical costs and technology) companies will be affected with when IMO’s Ballast Water Convention enters into force and ballast water has to be treated before entrance to the Baltic Sea. The purpose with the task was to find out which consequences companies will be forced with when IMO’s Ballast Water Convention enters into force. The result compares the difference between law and recommendation because HELCOM’s recommendations are based on IMO’s Ballast Water Convention’s laws. A qualitative method has been used, such as an open interview form, where four different companies were interviewed. The purpose with the interviews was to see if the companies followed HELCOM’s recommendations and which consequences it would lead to and would be necessary when the Ballast Water Convention enters into force. The results showed that the costs would be extensive when installation takes place and it will require technical arrangements. The task also shows that the purchase cost only makes a small part of the vessel’s investment and ballast water treatment systems are almost totally maintenance-free.

    The intention with this research has been to investigate the reason why few Swedish shipping companies are founded on the market today. One major focus will be on the problems that occur when starting a shipping company in Sweden.

     

    This is an important topic for future competitiveness in the maritime. Sweden used to be a leading maritime nation but not anymore. Though shipping transport carries 90% of Sweden´s export and import trade and also traded on the world market to a large extent. But still Sweden has lost its position as one of the leading maritime nations.

     

    This paper is based upon the problem “Why are few start- ups in the Swedish shipping industry”? which is a recurring theme in the study.

     

    This topic is greatly important since there are only a few studies covering the shipping company industry and minor reports similar to this paper. It is also a relevant topic for today´s society where we do import and export a lot of goods every day. Sweden used to be one of the leading shipping countries, but nowadays there are only few newly established shipping companies on the market. 

     

    For this study a qualitative method with profound interviews has been made. This approach was chosen because the intention was to investigate into this problem formulation based on reality. Several interviews were implemented with different Swedish shipping companies. Where the intention was not to influence the informant rather the opposite, the intention was to gain information based on reality. The main task was to find some recurrent aspects regarding different problems that might occur when starting a shipping company.

     

    The conclusion of this study is that there are some common problems that occur. Therefore there are some suggestions for improvement regarding maritime industry at the end of this paper.

    The purpose: We have investigated the relationship between theoretical and practical learning of the Nautical Science Program(4years) at the Linnaeus University. We focused on examining whether the theoretical knowledge is a prerequisite for the students to meet the expected learning outcomes during the first ship based training. Method: We preformed a literature review covering four different educations. We did also look in to three different types of mentoring models which in one way or another are applicable to those courses. In order to critically examine our literature and to find out the actual condition, we conducted five interviews with informants. Result: Made it possible to see a number of similarities in educational programs approach between theoretical and practical learning and guidance models used. Conclusion: The Basic Safety Training is a prerequisite for students to go out on the ship based training but it is not a prerequisite for achieving the expected learning outcome. We have noted that the supervisor and the supervisor’s knowledge and skills plays a central role for the conditions in which the student is given in order to achieve the study objectives of the first ship based training.

    Abstract [en]

    This work answered the question about how the situation is today on the bridge for the nautical officers and how the amount of rules and guidelines that exists affects his ability to manoeuvre the ship in a safe way. To study this we have performed a literature study where we studied the Swedish Transport Agency’s published accident investigation reports as well as research in the fields of human error, shipping organization and safety at sea.

     

    Our findings show that the crew on board has been reduced due to technical advancement. However, the rules have not followed the same pace and therefore today’s ships may not fulfil the requirements of minimum manning on board. Although we can tell that the officers have an increased workload we cannot see why they have acted as they did at the time of the accidents. It can also be shown that there is a need for future research where, for example, studies on how the accident investigation reports are designed.

    The electric- and control engineering parts of the Marine Engineering Programme areregulated on a very general level by STCW, which sets the global standard formaritime education. Countries and academies are thereby given great liberty ofinterpretation whereby differences in knowledge and proficiency could be expected.Modern ships contain a great deal of electric and control equipment which leads tothat knowledge within this area is important. Marine engineers with differenteducational backgrounds often compete on the same labour market, and this is acomparison over the area between Kalmar Maritime Academy and a correspondingPolish one, Akademia Morska in Szczecin.The results show that the education in theoretical aspect broadly corresponds. Thesame course content can be found, teaching is through lectures and laboratoryexercises and examination through written exams, compulsory laboratory exercisesand assignments. The extent of the courses, in ECTS, is however greater in theSwedish school. The largest difference is the electrical workshop course offered inKalmar. The study also shows that good skills in the area are coveted by shippingcompanies.A literature study has been made over governing documents. Interviews were heldwith maritime authorities, school staff, students and Swedish shipping companies.

    Studiens syfte var att undersöka om de som bemannar en Fast Rescue Boat anser sig erhållit tillräcklig kunskap för att använda ovanstående båt i de förhållanden de är tänkta att brukas i, samt känner trygghet inför användandet, nämligen vid räddningsinsatser i olika väderförhållanden. Det är inte otänkbart att någon ramlar överbord och behöver räddas när vädret är sämre. För att kunna använda denna typ av båt krävs att man utbildas och övar eftersom momenten enligt Sjöfartsverket kan anses ha hög svårighetsgrad.

    Vi har genomfört en kvalitativ intervjustudie med personer som i sitt professionella yrke bemannar Fast Rescue Boat. I denna studie framkom bland annat att alla som ingår i en FRB-besättning inte ens är utbildade, samt att det övas för lite och att de känner otrygghet inför användandet av FRBn.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study has been that, starting from a marine accident statistics for the groundings, searching dominant risk factors for ships' performance, see the extent to which follow-up is carried out and how it uses and can be drawn from experience developing within military shipping. We have also examined whether it is possible to find some common causal link between the various attributes of the ship groundings/stranding.

     

    The main findings of this study :

    • risks associated with practical navigation practice in the archipelago should be analyzed further.   Skill levels and examination forms are the central parts
    • risks in connection with reorganization and new organizations have to be clarified
    • risks from new ship systems or new navigational methods should be analyzed
    • SMS system in the armed forces may have probably major “non-conformities”
    • the system does not work fully: capacity gaps in the long term to systematically identify, analyze and take care of important knowledge
    • the reporting system, DIUS-M, has major shortcomings. Feedback, audit results and reporting of "near misses" within nautical missing almost completely. The handling of the suggestions for improvements is not included in DIUS-M. This has probably given a low overall reporting tendency. The reports are not always the primary data
    • lacks balance between rules of corrections and "Lessons Learned"
    • trends cannot statistically shown in relation to the use of the ships and are difficult to visualize
    • repeated identical audit results for the safety management system (SMS) itself as non-confirmative
    • lessons learned from the SMS system and are not take care of  in the Navy’s nautical lessons-learned process
    • classification of "performance shaping factors" are missing from the analyses
    • activity concerning improvement publishers is today unclear and gaping completely in the documents
    • the introduction of common rules for military shipping has improved the ships ' nautical-technical status and likely minimized casualties.

     

    We have not found any procedures to prevent a sloped plane, so-called “negative inheritance”, concerning practical navigation skills in the arts, after the sea officers training. This is despite the fact that the navy has higher demands on both skill and experience. The learning syllabus needs to be identified, described and better demanded.

     

    The Armed Forces have resources to launch a working SMS and lessons-learned process.

    A part result showed that the Navy ship grounds more frequently when any form of navigation training is conducted and that analyses often terminated where they from an evaluation perspective begins to become interesting. Based on the found relations we do attempts to sort out sea going hours and exposure times for risks when training navigation onboard. It was further examined the presence of evaluation models for maritime traffic, as well as the Navy's ability to evaluate its deviation system.

     

    A proposal for adding a Lessons Learned model to the reporting system for meet the skills of the armed forces SMS (FMMS) is shown.
