    Abstract [en]

    Environmental and safety aspects of seasonal storage of baled municipal solid waste to be used as fuel for energy production (waste fuel), was investigated and experiments were carried out on burning of bales. The flammability, combustion processes and emissions were studied by simulating, in small-scale, potential effects of a possible fire in full-scale bale storage area. Despite the high water content and the high density of the bales, after setting fire, the bales burned well, even though no risk for self-ignition exists. The following parameters of the combustion product were measured continuously: O2, CO2, CO, SO2, NO, NO2, NOx,THC, smoke gas rate and the temperature of the smoke. Soot particles in the smoke were collected and analysed for Hg, Pb, Cd, As,Ni, Cr, Mn, Cu, Co, Sb and V concentrations. The analysis of the moisture content, concentrations of Hg, Cd, HCl, HF, HBr, NH3, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), chlorinated and brominated dioxins (PCDD/F and PBrDD/F, respectively) were carried out. It was found that the PCDD/F levels (TEQs) varied according to the system used: 12.53 ng (I-TEF-88)/Nm3; 14.09 ng (I-TEF-99)/Nm3;13.86 ng (Eadons)/Nm3. The PAH concentration was 3.04 mg/Nm3. The contents of the metals in the smoke (with the exceptions of Pb and Cd with mean values of 1.74 and 0.36 mg/m3, respectively) were below the limit values established by the Swedish Ministry ofEnvironment for emissions from incineration plants [Swedish Ministry of Environment, (2002:1060), Förordning 2002:1060 omavfallsförbränning.     Abstract [en]

    Over a period of seven months, the temperature and the emissions from six cylindrical and two rectangular stored bales containing waste for later use as fuel were measured. The bales were kept at two different ranges of temperatures: 30-35˚C and 20-25˚C respectively. It was foundthat only the rectangular bales showed significant productionof CO2. The increase of emission for one of the rectangular bales kept at 30-35˚C, was 0.246% vol. CO2 per day for a 2-week period, after which there was a decrease of CO2 concentrations at a rate of 0.0224% vol. during a 32-week period. The other rectangular bale kept at 20-25˚C, exhibited a similar trend. However, the increase of CO2 concentrations was less at a rate of 0.0259% vol. per day during a 8-week period, after which the CO2 emission decreased at a rate of 0.0224% vol. per day during a 25-week period. All the bales exhibited aerobic decomposition in the sampling point. However, on measuring the leachate concentrations, it was evident that the bales were actually in the equivalent acid-generating phase of a young landfill. The temperature inside the bales did not increase higher than the ambient air temperature.

    Abstract [en]

    AMANDA (Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array) is a neutrino telescope built under the southern polar icecap and its scope is to explore the possibility to detect high energy cosmic neutrinos. This should generate insight into the powerful celestial objects where acceleration mechanisms can bring up to 10 20   eV. We describe the achievements and results from the AMANDA-B10 prototype and the preliminary results from the current AMANDA-II detector which show dramatic increase in sensitivity.

    Abstract [en]

    This Master thesis deals with wave propagation and starts with wave propagation basics. It briefly presents the theory for the diffraction over terrain obstacles and describes two different path loss models, the Hata model and a FFT-based model. The significance of this paper is that it gives the simulation results for the models mentioned above and presents a comparison between the results obtained from an empirical formula and the FFT-model. The comparison shows that the approach based on Fast Fourier Transform is good enough for prediction of the path loss and that it is a time efficient method.

    Abstract [sv]

    Detta är ett examensarbete som handlar om bytet av värmesystem i Glömminge Kyrka på Öland. Glömminge kyrka har bytt ut sitt gamla värmesystem som gick på direktverkande el mot ett mer kostnadseffektivt och miljöanpassat värmesystem. Det nya systemet har brännare med panna för att kunna värma kyrkan med olika sorters miljöbränslen exempelvis rapsfettsyra. I arbetet beskrivs värmesystemet, bränsletyper samt det styrsystem som används för att styra värmesystemet. Examensarbetet handlar även om vilka nivåer av relativ luftfuktighet man bör ha i byggnader med känsliga inventarier och vilka åtgärder man kan vidta för att hålla önskad luftfuktighet.

    Världen krymper i och med ökad globalisering, ska vi kunna leva tillsammans på ett hållbart sätt måste vi alla ta vårt ansvar, stora som små, företag som privatpersoner. Detta medför starka argument för att ta fram lättanvända metoder för hållbarhetsgranskning. Sustainable Sweden Southeast AB (SSSE) är ett nätverksföretag som samlar och marknadsför sina delägares miljöteknikkompetens under ett gemensamt varumärke. SSSE har ett hållbarhetsråd som hjälper till att granska nya potentiella delägare, dock saknas i dag en fungerande metod för detta. På uppdrag av SSSE:s VD har en ny metod för granskning arbetats fram, en checklista med hållbarhetskriterier, vilket också är detta examensarbetes syfte. Den resulterande checklistan har 83 kriterier, främst med inriktning på två av hållbar utvecklings tre ben; ekologiska och sociala aspekter. En bilaga medföljer checklistan, den förklarar de olika kriterierna och hjälper till att tolka dem lika för alla som fyller i listan. De hållbarhetsgranskningsmallar som finns är främst anpassade för stora företag med stora resurser, företagen i SSSE:s nätverk är små och medelstora företag som behöver något mer konkret. Med hjälp av litteraturstudier har de stora kriterierna tolkats och omformats till mer konkreta kriterier. Slutsatsen är att checklistor verkar vara ett välanvänt och effektivt verktyg samt att företagsvärlden har börjat ta sitt sociala ansvar genom CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), även om det är i storföretagens värld det händer.

    The AMANDA neutrino telescope at the South Pole has been taking data since 1996. It has been upgraded in steps and reached its final stage in January 2000. Results are presented from the search for extraterrestrial neutrinos and neutrinos from dark matter annihilation.

    Abstract [en]

    The Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) is a high-energy neutrino telescope operating at the geographic South Pole. It is a lattice of photomultiplier tubes buried deep in the polar ice. The primary goal of this detector is to discover astrophysical sources of high energy neutrinos. We describe the detector methods of operation and present results from the AMANDA-B10 prototype. We demonstrate the improved sensitivity of the current AMANDA-II detector. We conclude with an outlook to the envisioned sensitivity of the future IceCube detector.
