Idrott och fritid – en väg till integration?: En kvalitativ studie om hur ledare inom idrottsföreningar och fritidsverksamheter arbetar med integration2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to explore opportunities for unaccompanied minors to be integrated and participate in society through youth centres and football clubs. This is done by analysing how the leader in recreational activities and sports clubs look to their function as an integration tool for unaccompanied young people. The study was based on a qualitative approach and empirical data collection was done by semi-structured interviews. We have interviewed a total of six people, three are working on municipal youth centres and three people working in football clubs. When the empirical evidence was gathered, we found two main themes integration with under themes influence and rights and obligations and opportunities and difficulties with the under theme the collaboration.  The study's results have been analysed in the light of previous research, as well as the theoretical concepts of civil society, integration and empowerment.

The result shows that youth centres and football clubs work with integration issues and that it is important to create a climate where young people can sense fellowship. Mainly on youth centres language was a barrier which sometimes could complicate the process of integration. In football clubs had the youth not always the language skills but the leaders stated that when language was not there other young people could help to translate and explain. Leaders in football clubs specified all the young people who train and play with them had difficult to take place in the established clubs and they saw problems with the integration when established clubs would not or could not accommodate all who want to participate in the club. However, they believed that young people could start in their team and later move on to the second, which they also help young people to do.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is that from a gender perspective, highlighting how investigating social workers assess and justify the decisions concerning youth with socially destructive behavior. The focus is on the similarities and differences constructed. In order to respond to our study, we interviewed six social workers in six municipalities who work with youth investigations. The interviews took place in the southern and central Sweden. Parallell to the interviews, we used a vignette that we designed and constructed ourselves. It contains a fictitious case of a youth with socially destructive behavior. Half of the interviewees had to answer the case where the youth had a girl's name and the other half in which the adolescent had a boy's name. Selected theories that have been used to create an understanding of our research problem is the gender system and professional ethics. The results of our empirical data gave us several conclusions. The outcomes of this study shows that social workers holds a gender awareness when working with investigations of teenaged boys and girls. However the results also show the complexity that exists in regard to possess a conscious approach to the gender impact of youth investigations among social workers. It appears that the social workers seem to react and act slightly different depending on whether the youth is a boy or a girl. Furthermore, the results indicate that the heavy workload affect the social workers investigative work and in turn the young people. Interesting findings were also the social workers descriptions of the importance of school's role in getting the girls and boys gone wrong to return to a healthy path in life.

Title: Now I took his child, what will he do with mine?”

A qualitative study on threat and violence aimed at social workers within child protective service.

Authors:  Emma Andersson and Torbjörn Sjölin.

    Supervisor:  Peter Hultgren.

    Assessor: Barzoo Eliassi.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how social workers within child protective service understand and experience threat and violence aimed at them in their profession and how these understandings and experiences affects their well-being. The study will provide an understanding of the subject at hand and can also lead way for new research areas of how to improve the well-being of social workers within this field.

Method: A qualitative approach based on semistructured interviews has been used as method in this study. To collect empirical material seven currently working social workers from three different municipalities in the same region were interviewed.

Theory: The theoretical points of this thesis has been Berger and Luckmanns theories about social construction, theory of social cognition and a model produced in the writing of how interaction between experience and understanding affects the well-being. The different theories and approaches has been a valuable tool to analyze the empirical material gathered in the study.

Results: The result of this study is divided in different themes based on the purpose of the study. Our results indicate that social worker within child protective service consider

threat and violence as occurring within their profession and that this perception has a negative impact on their well-being. Even though social workers consider threat and violence as not acceptable at work and perceive threat as a part of their job they continue to fulfill their obligations at work. The main explanation, found in this study, is that they consider the well-being of children as higher valued than their own.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how social workers perceive and understand violence and threats of violence from clients, and how it effect their working environment. It seems that the respondents understand the violence and threats of violence from clients as a result of the clients background problems, vulnerability, dependency and from “the reason" that the client is currently in the contact with the organization. How respondents interpret the client´s behaviour based on the above-mentioned factors, seem to determine how the respondents perceive and define the violence and threats of violence by clients directed against them. Interestingly enough, although all respondents in the study experienced violence and threats of violence from clients, none of them perceived themselves as exposed at work. The answer to this is consensual. The respondents argue that they “knew what they got into" and thus violence and threats of violence from clients can be considered as part of the work, that the social workers must be aware of in order to work within the organization.

A further aim of this study was to examine how the social workers views the matter of who’s responsible for the threats and violent incidents and how to "best" encounter the violence and threats of violence within the organization. The respondents argue that it is when the social workers communicate in a wrong way, use their power or give "bad decisions" to the clients that most threats and violent incidents occur. The role that the respondents construct for themselves can be understood as they need to ,in their professional role "withstand a little bit" of violence and threats of violence from clients. The respondents then becomes mainly responsible for the threats and violent incidents, because they communicated in a wrong way, used the "unnecessary" exercise of power, or gave "bad decisions" to clients. The clients responsibility is then reduced due to the fact that the client merely reacts to how the respondent acted towards the client. The key element in the prevention of violence and threats of violence seems to be the way the respondents builds relations to the client. However, it also appears that the respondents expect a certain amount of violence and threats of violence from clients. Violence and threats of violence therefore run the risk of becoming something that the respondents get used to and sometimes expect, and something that they to some extent can protect themselves from, but never fully avoid or prevent.

    Abstract [en]

The drug treatment staff attitude towards needle exchange is what investigates in this study. The aim of this study is to see what’s affecting the standpoints in the needle exchange issue and also to investigate if the needle exchange is compatible with Swedish drug policy. The study has a qualitative approach and it’s based on eight semi-structured interviews with drug treatment staff. To analyze the empirical material we’ve used Berger and Luckmanns social construction theory, the theoretical concept profession socialization and the four ethical principles: autonomy principle, goodness maximization principle, harm minimization principle and the principle of justice.

The result of this study shows that drug treatment staffs are negative to needle exchange efficacy. They don’t believe that needle exchange is compatible with Swedish drug policy which strives for a drug free society. The drug treatment staffs are worried about that harm reduction interventions, such as needle exchange, will lead to a liberalized drug policy and that drug use will be legitimized. They fear that the drug policy will be weakened with harm reduction. The results illustrate that there are numerous factors that influence staff attitudes towards needle exchange, these are profession socialization, workplace, organization, context, the current drug policy as well as knowledgeable of the needle exchange.

Keywords: Needle exchange, Injection drug users, Drug treatment staff, Harm reduction and Swedish drug policy.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay was to identify how social workers experience and handle work related stress in order to understand how stress can be handled on an individual level. The study was based on a qualitative study and used semi-structured interviews. Interviews with professionals showed that stress mainly occur in absence of control. Social workers use social support and structure their work to reduce demands, to handle stress. The professionals also believe that limits and distance in work is key. Social workers use these different strategies to handle stress, yet some of the issues is adjusted within the organisation. Various organizational factors may contribute or prevent a burnout. In conclusion although the professionals can form their work situation by using these techniques to reduce stress, some problems will remain because it is controlled within the organisation.

Keywords: Social worker, work related stress, burnout, social services, work situation.

    Abstract [en]

Youth culture and social problems associated with youth groups have existed for decades. We have chosen an explorative case study design to highlight young people's revolt against parents and society and how society has dealt with social problems of youth and how those were perceived. “Raggare” were considered a major social problem in society. The material in the study comes from eight qualitative interviews and literature of previous research of the current youth culture. The material also comes from a document study, which shows the social problems in connection with the youth cultures celebration of the midsummer festival in Öland. We have analyzed and clarified the image of “Raggare” past and present and found mechanisms that changed the “Raggare” culture from being a major social problem to the accepted as a pastime today. Our theoretical framework builds on previous research of the current youth culture, subcultures, deviant, symbols and symbolic interaktionism. We assume that theorist Zygmunt Baumans discussion of "we" and "them", Stanley Cohens term "moral panic" and Erving Goffmans dramaturgical perspective reflect our study in an informative approach.

Manliga förebilder inom socialt arbete: föreställningar, praktik och organisation2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Among those who graduate from the various schools of Social work in Sweden are a great majority women. At the same time men are sought after in the work field.  But not just to level up the equality between the sexes, but also to fill a gender specific niche to counter up a need for male role models. But a closer look at this need and the types of functions set to cater for it shows that male role models as a concept vary between contexts. In this study we examine the concepts and the practices of male role models in three different settings: a municipal social care center offering young boys male bonding activities; a non-profit organization warding young people from drug abuse and criminal behavior; and last, a long term residential home for young boys between the ages 13 and 19. Our research shows that the concept of the male role model vary between the organizations and less so within. By the means of semi-structured interviews we examine representatives from the three organizations and their both personal and professional views on what a male role model is. By using a social-constructionistic frame work to understand and interpret our data we conclude that the concept of a male role model is used out of different ideas of manliness; either a man who transcends gender stereotypes, or a man who manifests them – a fact that per se contests the idea of gender as innate. How these come to vary is a question of the conditions of the organization when it comes to the relationship between professional and client of either being conditioned by official constraints or personal closeness. But the pivotal factor to understand the variations is the gender mix. The organizations representing a stereotypical concept of manliness are almost exclusively of one sex, while the other hold equal amounts of women and men. To transcend the barrier of gender stereotypes it is necessary to share experience of both sexes for creating awareness of sameness, instead of claiming difference. This can also help give the young male client an alternative approach to an adult male identity beyond his socially given horizon.

"Man gör ju vad man kan för varandra": Makars roll i en parrelation med en demenssjuk partner2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore spouses' roles in a relationship with a partner with dementia and to understand spouses' situations at home. The study was focusing on gender roles and authority in relationships between the spousal caregivers and their partners with dementia. The method used for this study was qualitative content analysis and the data was collected from seven interviews with spousal caregivers about their roles as partners of people with dementia. By critically examining Twiggs three models, carers as resources, caregivers as co-workers and carers as co-clients, we have been able to visualize how spouses can look upon their role to their partners with dementia. A fourth model has been added to a modification of Twiggs models, because spouse's roles didn't fit into any of Twiggs already existing models. There is not a big gender difference about spousal care for a partner, and the caregivers are in a highly extent affected of the situation with a partner with dementia. Spouses role can fit in with partners as carers, which is a fourth model added to Twiggs original three models.

PÅ NÅGOT VIS SÅ ÄR DET NÅGOT SJÄLVISKT: En studie om drivkrafter till frivilligt engagemang i Svenska Röda Korsets fadderverksamhet för nyinvandrade2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A considerable number young of students are suffering from sociopsychological complaints. The psychological complaints emerge from differnt sources. Important factors for psychological well being are experiences of a satisfactory social network, efficient coping strategies and a supportive school climate.

The aim of this study was to examine how young girls in the age of 16-18 years old experience and cope with demands from school. To fulfill the aim of this study we have five questions: What do the girls apprehend as a satisfactory/unsatisfactory working environment? How do the girls define stress? How do the girls cope with stress? What importance has leisure time? What importance has the social network?

The method we used for this study was qualitative and the material was collected through four focus groups. Fourteen girls were interviewed from four different school classes with different profiles. The theoretical framework used to analyze the findings consisted of the demand-control-model created by Karasek & Theorell, Antonovsky’s KASAM theory and Selyes GAS-theory.

Stress expressed by the girls in this study is described as an unbalance between workload and available time. The analysis shows that most of the girls in the study experience school as a demanding setting that create strain. Furthermore, the results indicate that experienced demands not only originate from school but also from the girls themselves and by comparison with classmates. A satisfactory school environment is described as possibilities to influence the school work and the structrue of courses. Also a good relationship with teachers as well as classmates where pointed out as important factors. Strategies the girls use to cope with stress and demands are structuration, priority and planning. Some of the girls also think that a positive attitude towards life, regular eating and sleeping are important factors in coping with stress.

All the girls describs leisure time as significant.  Most girls practice sport activites but activities as playing instrument, watching movies and spending time with peers is also mentioned. All of the girls find their leisure time as of importance for them to relax and revive from the strain caused by school. However, some girls find it hard to fully relax during leisure activites and also think that time for leisure is too limited.

The social network is aslo seen as an important instrument in coping with strain. Most of the girls in this study do talk to family or friends in times of hardship.

    Abstract [en]

The aim with this study was to get an understanding of how social workers on treatment centers where substance abuse occur identify ADHD among the patients and how the social workers in their daily work treat and meet patients with ADHD. The study was based on eight interviews with social workers on three different treatment centers in Sweden. The result has been analyzed with a content analysis. The theories used in this study are Howard Becker’s labeling theory and equifinality and multifinality, which derive from the systems theory.

The result of the study was that the social workers do not identify ADHD among their patients, but they adjust the treatment after what needs the individual patient have. These needs are for instance need of security and predictability. These needs are being considered in the treatment in the daily work since the social workers use a treatment that consists of structure, routines and schedules. This treatment is used on every patient and is not adjusted whether a diagnosis exists or not. How the social workers meet the patients can however be different for patients with ADHD since the social workers find clearness, alliance and trust as important in the meeting with these patients. This can however differ depending on what the social workers focus on in the treatment. The social workers on one of the treatment centers focus on the substance abuse, the social workers on another treatment center focus on the disability and in one treatment center both of these are in focus.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about the assessment of foster care families and what´s considered a suitable foster care home. It is a comparative study between two welfare countries, Sweden and Australia. The study aims to increase the understanding of social workers assessment on foster care families and examines what a suitable foster care home looks like for a few social workers in each country. The study was carried out through five qualitative interviews, three of them in Sweden and two of them in Australia. With a social constructivist theory the result was carried out and analysed. The result of the study shows differences in the way social workers in each country talk about the suitability of a foster carer. In Australia the social workers that participated in the study spoke about a suitable foster family as a family that is safe and can provide a safe environment. In Sweden the social workers spoke about a suitable family as a secure and stable family. The result of the study also shows similarities between the two countries, as an example the nuclear family is still the norm and other family structures are exceptions of the norm.

    - A quantitative study of first line managers' actions in elderly care. [Translated title] Supervisor: Lars Sörnsen Assessor: Kerstin Arnesson

Previous research shows that first line managers in elderly care act in different ways and it can affect both employees and the elderly. The purpose of this study was to investigate why first line managers act differently in elderly care, by analyzing the relationships between education and first line manager's actions. We also wanted to investigate whether managers act on the basis of education or guidance documents. To achieve the purpose of this study, a quantitative approach was used. All first line managers in elderly care in Kalmar County, Blekinge County and Kronoberg County were given the opportunity to answer a survey online. We analyzed the answers by performing different analyzes with the program SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). To analyze the results of the study, concepts of leadership and profession were used. The study concluded that the first line managers with social education acted more alike than other professions. It also showed that first line managers with more experience used guidance documents to a greater extent than first line managers with less experience.

Vårdnadsöverflyttning: Några socialsekreterares syn på bestämmelsen i Föräldrabalkens 6 kap 8 §2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Title: ”It´s so sensitive” - Persons in authority's arguments around those persons with disabilities chooses to become parents.

Authors: Therese Andersson and Malene Helander

    Supervisor: Magdalena Damberg

The purpose with this paper is to describe and analyze how professionals act when people with disabilities chose to become parents. To achieve this purpose we have chosen to use a qualitative method with deliberation interviews. The interviews have been implemented with six different persons in authority who work in social welfare offices and as LSS - administrators.

Ensured to our questions, (1) How does persons in authority do in the meeting with persons that has a disability and chooses to become parents? (2) Which possibilities respective difficulties see persons in authority within social service and LSS with parenthood where the parent has a disability? (3) What is done in order to facilitate the needs that are added when persons with disabilities chooses to become parents? we consider that they have been responded to.

Through our empirical materials we can interpret and read out the replies that we searched for in connection with our survey. It has shown how persons in authority that is active within social service and LSS goes about when they meet persons with disabilities that want to form family. The procedure sees differently out depending on which disability the client in question has.

Title:“My first thought is a girl that cuts herself” – A qualitative study about professionals in human service organizations description of self-injurious behavior.

    Supervisor: Ann Ottengrim

    Assessor: Rickard Ulmestig

    The purpose of this study has been to understand how professionals in human service organizations (HSO) describe self-injuries behaviour, how they describe the individuals that self-harm and if the professionals describe any possible differences in how men and women self-harm as well as how professional’s knowledge concerning self-injurious behaviour is contructed. The study answers three questions;

    - What kind of actions do professionals in HSO describe as being self-injurious behaviour?

    - How is knowledge constructed by professionals in HSO concerning self-injurious behaviour?

    - How are people who engage in self-injurious behaviour being described?

    - How do professionals in human service organizations describe potential differences between men and women´s self-injurious behaviour?

Qualitative interviews have been chosen as the method in this study to gather empirical data and the social constructionism theory has been implemented to analyse the empirical data.

The result of this study shows that self-injurious behaviour is a complex and at the same time a dynamic phenomenon. There are a lot of different actions that are being describes as being self-injurious behaviour. An individual that cuts its own body tissue or an individual that often gets involved in psychical fights are examples of acts that are being described as having a self-injurious behaviour. The informants also described that their knowledge and what they define as self-injurious behaviour has changed over time in the field which indicates that self-injurious behaviour is a dynamic category. According to our results it doesn’t seem to exist a stereotype of whom and why someone engages in self-harm. But men tend to self-harm in a more severe way than women.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain knowledge about parents of children with substance abuse and their experiences of social services support and treatment. The data collection consists of seven individual qualitative and semi-structured interviews with parents of children with substance abuse. The results were interpreted with a hermeneutic perspective and later on categorised and presented with a qualitative content analysis. The theoretical framework that has been used to analyse this study is systems theory. This study shows that the parents in our study did not get any support from the social services. Instead the parents found support in non-profit support groups and in their family and friends. The results also show that the parents in this study did not feel like the social services worked with them and other support groups, but instead only focused on the child with the substance abuse.

Bodybuilding and Fitness Doping in Transition: Historical Transformations and Contemporary Challenges2019In: Social Sciences, E-ISSN 2076-0760, Vol. 8, no 3, p. 1-14Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article describes and analyses the historical development of gym and fitness culture in general and doping use in this context in particular. Theoretically, the paper utilises the concept of subculture and explores how a subcultural response can be used analytically in relation to processes of cultural normalisation as well as marginalisation. The focus is on historical and symbolic negotiations that have occurred over time, between perceived expressions of extreme body cultures and sociocultural transformations in society—with a perspective on fitness doping in public discourse. Several distinct phases in the history of fitness doping are identified. First, there is an introductory phase in the mid-1950s, in which there is an optimism connected to modernity and thoughts about scientifically-engineered bodies. Secondly, in the 1960s and 70s, a distinct bodybuilding subculture is developed, cultivating previously unseen muscular male bodies. Thirdly, there is a critical phase in the 1980s and 90s, where drugs gradually become morally objectionable. The fourth phase, the fitness revolution, can be seen as a transformational phase in gym culture. The massive bodybuilding body is replaced with the well-defined and moderately muscular fitness body, but at the same time there are strong commercialised values which contribute to the development of a new doping market. Finally, it is possible to speculate on the development of a fifth phase, in which fitness doping is increasingly being filtered into mainstream gym and fitness culture, influencing the fitness doping demography.

    Abstract [en]

The widespread availability of doping and its growing prevalence among fitness groups has contributed greatly to the realization of an emergent public health issue. Emanating from an ethnographic study in Sweden, the purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the processes involved in becoming and "unbecoming" a fitness doping user. The study employs a cultural and sociological perspective as its theoretical framework and discusses how the participating users gradually develop their knowledge about the drugs and how the process of becoming a user is negotiated in relation to ideas and ideals concerning health, gender, and individual freedom and Swedish law. Regarding exit processes, (re)entering into what is perceived to be an ordinary "normal" life was seldom a straightforward process. To understand the complex and sometimes complicated transition processes involved in becoming respectively unbecoming a fitness doper, the results highlight the limitations of using stage models for understanding exit process as heuristic tools. Furthermore, the article argue for the necessity to investigate the negotiations of fitness doping, taking place in the intersection between subcultural affiliations/spaces, doping legislation, and mainstream perceptions of living a "Normal" life. It is argued that processes of (un)becoming a fitness doper are anything but linear and thus need to be understood in relation to sociocultural belonging and ongoing negotiation of the individual's sense of self.

A new doping demography?: Female PIED users in the context of online communication2019In: International Network of Doping Research, 2019 Conference, WADA’s 20th Anniversary, 22.-23. August 2019, Aarhus University, Denmark: Book of Abstracts, Aarhus University , 2019, p. 8-8Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Internationally, WADA, NADOs, and different public health organizations conduct fairly comprehensive antidoping measures. As a consequence, numerous ‘new’ ways to learn about and access these types of drugs have emerged. Different internet communities, for example, have become part of a new self-help culture in which mostly men, can anonymously approach these substances. But times are changing and women are increasingly engaging in drug using practices. Using a netnographic approach, the aim of this study is to describe and analyse how female users of performance and image enhancing drugs (PIED) approach, understand and negotiate their use, and relate it to existing preventative measures. The study will focus on an online community called Flashback, and adopts a constructionist approach, investigating how particular subject positions (identities) and drug use strategies are created within a specific ‘community of practice’. The results show that there is an increasing amount of knowledge that not only targets but is also developed by and for women concerning PIED use. Female users are gradually becoming more integrated into the online doping community. A changing doping demography and the online offer of PEIDs will be a great challenge in the development of future supranational, and online, prevention strategies and anti-doping campaigns.

The INNOVAGE-Eurocarers platform and current ICT-based services for informal carers of older people in Sweden2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Different support services for family carersare available in Sweden through information andcommunication technologies (ICTs) since late 1990s, likeACTION, My Joice, IPPI, ‘The Gap’, and Carer Sweden’son-line ‘Carer’s Book’. The INNOVAGE-Eurocarersplatform aimed to complement the offer of web services tocarers through the provision of a new tailored package.

Methods: The Swedish pilot test enrolled around 50carers through contacts with professionals working withcarers in different municipalities. They could access thefollowing web-based services: information resources;individual support via e-mail and private messages; groupsupport via social network and forum. Periodical writingactivities were asked to active users in the forum, alternating expressive writing (EW) and time management(TM) writing tasks. Periodical reminders were sent in orderto increase user involvement.

Results: Users were predominantly older, female carers,of which two thirds were over 65 years old. The webplatform was perceived as a flexible tool, potentiallyaccessible at any time, which gave users the possibility toexploit their experience as carers with others in similarsituations. This peer exchange seemed to improve selfempowerment, sense of solidarity and mutual learning. However, usage of the web platform was limited due to thelow level of digital skills of some carers.

Conclusions: Although results confirmed usefulness andappropriateness of implemented web services, it isfundamental to address the issue of usability andaccessibility in order to ensure a wider accessibility. Anoption might be to offer initial digital skill training andcontinuous technical support for computer novices.

The study aims to understand foster care secretary’s reasoning concerning biological children in foster cares. Previous research shows that biological children are a vulnerable group. But do their voices get heard? To find out how the foster care secretary reasoning about biological children of foster cares, I have interviewed four randomly municipalities in Sweden. The study is qualitative and based on a development ecological system theoretical perspective.

The result shows that biological children’s right is focused and that the secretary’s ambition is to talk with the biological children before and under the foster care period. Before the family becomes a foster care they have to undergo extensive training to learn and feel ready for the new life situation.

Sociala lärandets möjligheter i fritidshemmet: En kvalitativ studie kring barns uppfattningar om vart det sociala lärandet sker2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how the new established phenomenon of “Internet drugs” causes challenges to organizations, both individually and in relation to collaboration. The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with representatives from three organizations - one youth police unit, one medical addiction centre and four units working within social services. The theoretical approach that was used is theory about human service organizations, theory about collaboration and new institutional organizational theory. A conclusion is that the current drug classification is problematic and mainly challenging for the organizations that focus on prevention work and early interventions. Meanwhile, the phenomenon also concerns organizations who work with individuals with drug misuse and/or dependency problems that often holds some kind of treatment. In these cases it involves the use of the widespread Internet drug Spice, however, then it is associated to a side addiction, often with the aim of avoiding positive results on drug tests. Our conclusion shows that the parties concerned in current collaboration believe that the work against Internet drugs to some extent already accommodated within the existing framework for collaboration. Therefore the representatives do not have a need for collaboration specially aimed for the Internet drugs.

    Abstract [en]

There is little knowledge about abuse of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) in Sweden. This

paper aims to explore, from a discourse psychological angle, how persons with experience of

anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) construct there identities.

The theory and method used as a frame for the paper is discursive psychology, depending on the

focus in the paper of human beings use of language in the construction of identities. For

collection of data interviews were made. The six respondents al had experience of use of AAS.

The interviews illustrated how users of AAS speak about AAS, and create there identity, in

relation to AAS. In the interpretation of data we used two different tools, used by discursive

psychologists, interpretative repertoires and subject positions. Though the interpretative

repertoires we were able to separate the ways the respondents construct there statements. Subject

positions made it possible for us to interpret where the respondents did place themselves in there

speech. Other perspectives, derived from literature on the subject AAS, was brought into the

analysis. Other perspectives provide us with assumptions and make it possible to separate themes

    and discourses from the data.

Two discourses where separated from data, restrictive discourse and legal discourse. The

discourses contain three teams, use/abuse, physical risks and social risks. In the speech,

respondents, relate to these teams in order to construct there identities. The respondents construct

the speech in order to make use of AAS reasonable to them selves. The respondents construct the

speech in the direction towards a liberal discourse. They construct the use of AAS as reasonable

to them selves. The respondents make mostly difference between use and abuse of AAS and

don’t position them selves as abusers of AAS without reservations. A crucial component in the

construction of an identity as a user is the reduction of risks. The respondents reduce the risks

with AAS in different ways and make an identity as a user possible.

    Abstract [sv]

This study aims to make out, which notions and ideas about gender and sexuality that comes into expression in the description of the deviant youth. This study is a narrative analysis, based on a queer theoretical approach. The queer theory directs attention to the normative frameworks on gender and sexuality. Queer theory also illustrates the relationship between the normative and what is considered abnormal/deviant. The study's empirical basis is 8 legal texts, legal documents formed in a Swedish context, which include the welfare state´s judiciary and social services. The legal documents are concerning the social services care of deviant youth, based on the law that gives them  right to force care and treatment on anti-social youth. The study aims to examine the legal documents from a narrative analysis; in the way the story of the young is portrayed and what type of norms about gender and sexuality that emerges from that story.

The study’s result, although based on a content of 8 legal texts, is a finding of a one-sided story about the antisocial youth, depending on the youth´s gender. These findings are portrayed in what the study entitles: The damaged girl and The dangerous boy. These categories are used to illustrate in what way the social welfare system and judiciary constructs the way boys and girls may differ from the norm standards about gender and sexuality. The standard-setting institutions tend to retain the description of the young, despite the youngster's counter-stories, in which the young states their awareness of their normative violations. In conclusion the social welfare system and the judiciary, has the authority to construct the story about the deviant youth; a story that is constructed to legitimize the social institutions intervention in the care of antisocial youth.

The purpose of this study is to describe the Västervik municipality's self-esteem program and, from sociology of emotions, analyze the therapists' experience of the impact the program has on the clients in strengthening the self-esteem of people living with an addiction but who strive to get rid of it. The work assumes a qualitative approach and a case study was applied. To achieve the purpose, the empirics were based on three semistructured interviews and the program's manual. The interviews were analyzed based on a thematic analysis. The program's manual was processed using a content analysis. The thematic analysis’ themes and document analysis were analyzed using Thomas J. Scheff's sociology of emotion. The result showed that strong self-esteem is important to people living with addiction. Another important aspect in the result is the program’s ability to visualize the clients' feelings of shame. My conclusion is that self-esteem is important for people who want to get rid of addiction and the self-esteem program is useful for the purpose. But it may be that both clients that are in and those who leave the program need more time, better support and other resources to process the shame that occurs. In order to find out how shame can be related to self-esteem and how it affects people living with addiction, further research in the field is required.

Vad är hälsa i ämnet idrott och hälsa?: Hur verksamma lärare inom ämnet beskriver hälsa och hälsoundervisning?2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate how a community motivates and ensures the implementation of its values and how this document affected personnel of meaning, vision and daily operations. The study was based on semi-structured interviews, in which nine respondents were interviewed in a city in southern Sweden. Interviews dealt with three different themes, all concerned organization or set of values. The analysis was based partly on how organizations and institutions build up and maintain their legitimacy. The analysis was also explained by the new institutional theory and its concepts isomorphism. In conclusion, the study shows that the concept of value system is very subjective and means different things depending on which profession you belong to. The study also showed that officials of the municipality indicate that the values discussed continuously in operation. This picture did not fit at all agree with the care assistants who considered values almost never discussed. The study also showed that the implementation was not as successful as desired, then no time for reflection was. The study showed that the reason that there was an opportunity to reflect due to the time and resources were too scarce. Throughout officials related concepts in the study more to an organizational plan, when care assistants instead relate everything to the actual meeting with the care recipient. Instead of using values as a benchmark they instead used of the "inner compass" that consists of subjective norms and values.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how a child's rights of speech are taken into account in child welfare investigations. A child's speech or words are not always taken seriously or as important as it should be in the child’s context. This problem has been a major topic of concern both at the national and the international level. Children want their speech of rights to be respected. It is their fundamental right that every human must guarantee to protect these rights to make a better world for future generations. Therefore in order to deeply examine the research topic, the authors used different theoretical approaches like power theory, communication theory and freedom of action. Furthermore the authors gathered more information using semi structure interviews with social workers who work with child welfare investigations. From the interview discussions, the researchers looked for recurrent themes and came with some findings that children are able to express their opinions in child welfare investigations. Children’s visibility and participation in child welfare investigations have improved since BBIC (the child’s needs at the center) has been involved in child welfare investigations. Children´s words or opinions were also ignored. More so, the actual level of how a child´s contribution directly influenced the decision making process was very unclear. The study further shows that social workers are using various communication methods and techniques to adress children's wishes and opinions to provide the best acceptable services. A well-established feedback session is made available in order to gather the children’s opinions and improve on the services.

    Abstract [en]

    Author: Tobias Aspegren

Title: To call things by their right names – The example of bullying or victimization at work [Translated title]

    Supervisor: Ulf Drugge

    Assessor: Kerstin Arnesson

Purpose: The purpose of this study is, by a discourse psychological approach, to investigate how our choice of concept of a bullying situation at work can correlate with managers’ way of handling the situation. The issues I have answered in order to fulfill my purpose was first how the managers defined the concepts in the studies title, and second how the mangers handled a situation of bullying at work.

Method: I have used qualitative methods in my study in order to acquire my data. The method I used was semi-structured interviews. I analysed the results with a discourse psychological perspective by help of the theory’s concepts “interpretation repertoires” and “subjects positioning”. The participants of the study were four managers within the same organisation but in different manager positions, all with a work environment responsibility.

Results: The results and analysis of my study shows that there is a lack of knowledge of the concept “victimization” by those who are obligated the responsibility of the work environment. This can result in a situation of victimization at work that does not follow the correct law-bound recommendations written in AFS 2015:4 – Organisatorisk och Social Arbetsmiljö.

Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that if the situation defines as either bullying or victimization, there will be follow-up meetings with the victim. But due to the lack of knowledge by the concept “victimization” there is an increased risk that the situation will not be handled in the way it should, in accordance with the AFS 2015:4, but will only be handled as temporary conflict.

Villkor i boende och boendestöd ur rättsligt perspektiv2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The group of elderly people in Sweden will increase significantly in the future and science point out that the future elderly people will not accept today’s standards and offers of assistance in today’s public elderly care. Therefore public elderly care stands before a significant challenge in terms of development that has to be sustainable. New research also points out that middle managers can be a great strategic resource, and a founder of success, in the challenge of sustainable development. The aim of the report was to increase the knowledge about what middle managers in public elderly care think sustainable development has to embrace, when it comes to quality and personnel administration, in order to meet the needs of the future elderly people. The aim was also to deepen the knowledge of how formal and informal organizational factors facilitate or limit middle managers possibilities to work with development in general and sustainable development in specific in their units. Interviews, as a qualitative method, were used to gather empirical data and the result was analyzed with theories as Domain theory, New Public Management and Situational leadership. Our findings showed that middle managers have little possibilities to work with sustainable development in their units and that formal factors as budget had a great impact of the middle managers overall possibilities in their work. According to the result it seemed that development and long term planning in this particular organization were tasks mainly for the management and political domain. According to our findings it seemed as if the introduction of New Public Management increased the underlying initial problems of human service organizations. According to Domain theory these problems consists of disjunction, discordance and conflicts due to the differences between the three domains when it comes to principles, success measures, structure and work modes.

    Abstract [en]

Traditionally and historically certain jobs have been recognized as male or female professions leading to the assumption that the barrier crossing men and women working in these gender atypical jobs are being less masculine and less feminine. The aim of this study is to examine similarities and differences among male social workers and female police officers in the experience of being a gender minority in their workplace and how it effects the construction of their gender identity. Working with a qualitative approach and using semi-constructed interviews the study was conducted by interviewing a total of five social workers and four female police officers, in six different communities, about their personal experiences of being a gender minority in a gender atypical job. The result shows both differences and similarities between the genders and their occupation; on a personal level neither of the respondents seemed to have a problem working in a gender atypical job although admitting that working in a “female” and “male” profession  had effects on their personality but not on how they viewed themselves as men or women. On a group level the respondents experienced both differences and similarities; both genders talked about being stereotyped into taking on certain tasks but also about having advantages of being male or female in certain situations. Further on the female police officers talked about being pushed aside to give room for the male colleagues while the male social workers experienced the opposite; being more acknowledged. On a societal level respondents from both groups were talking about a shift in societies showcasing that the view on men and women and what is considered male and female have been or in a process of being disintegrated. The results were seen from a social constructionist viewing point and were interpreted and analyzed using following theories and theoretical concepts: Stereotype, gender, role theory, identity, gender identity and the theory about the mirrored self.
