Experiences of victimization among adolescents with Substance Abuse Disorders in Sweden2016In: Scandinavian Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology, E-ISSN 2245-8875, Vol. 4, no 3, p. 123-131Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Adolescents who initiate treatment for substance abuse often have a history of victimization in the form of physical, psychological, or sexual abuse. These experiences can have serious adverse consequences that may affect their livesand social functioning.

Objective: This article describes and analyzes victimization among adolescents who are in outpatient treatment for substance abuse disorders with respect to gender, social circumstances, alcohol and drug abuse, and mental health.

Method: This cross-sectional study is based on structured interviews with 748 adolescents from seven outpatient clinics in Sweden. Chi-squared tests were performed to examine significant differences between gender and victimization (or lack of victimization). The study also included a quantitative content analysis of interview utterances.

Results: The analysis showed that more than half of the adolescents had experienced violence or another type of abuse. There are also significant gender differences: two thirds of the girls and slightly less than half the boys had experienced abuse in some form, and the girls had more severe needs at treatment admission.

Conclusion: This study established that experiences of victimization and exposure to violence are widespread among adolescents with substance abuse disorders in Sweden. This is an important issue that requires attention and action, with preventive and therapeutic interventions needed to provide support for both substance abuse disorders and psychiatric symptoms.

Sustainability in Voluntourism Organisations: A Study of Implementations and Effects2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Voluntourism is a relatively new branch of tourism, and is considered to be quite sustainable in comparison to other forms of tourism. By researching how the voluntourists perceive the sustainable effects of the work that they have participated in, this thesis has been able to show how detectable some of these effects are. With the focus on the Philippines, this thesis has also been able to determine that the researched voluntourism organisations seems to be present in the country due to the fact that the help that they provide is really needed. By analysing the content of a number of voluntourism organisations, it has been possible to detect that the effects of the voluntourism work have several positive impacts on the local society. Out of these the main effects are the increased access to education and work for the locals. The thesis has also been able to determine that in order for organisations to be able to optimise their sustainability, they need to work with both economic, environmental, and social aspects.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine underlying causes in cases of dropout from the Master mariner programme, as well as mapping out problem areas for those students who choose to drop out. The study also aims to examine whether these causes differ from previous research in the area. Of particular interest is the role work experience plays in the decision to drop out. In order to examine the subject further a qualitative method has been used and semi structured interviews have been held with respondents from a single year commencing their studies in 2012 in order for the study to be as relevant as possible. Interviews have focused around pre-determined themes, which previous research has concluded to be of importance. Results show dropout as a result of a combination of factors, and very rarely is a single factor significant enough to describe the phenomena. The sample group was homogenous to the larger population of Officers in the Swedish merchant navy, as well as to their previous class mates. The course was described in positive terms and the social network around a student was often a protective factor. Work experience is shown to be of vital importance when a student considers dropping out, especially when reality collide with the students´own glorified expectations of life at sea. This together with a negative view on future work prospects and a general lack of interest in shipping was commonly reason for dropping out.

Kulturarvets betydelse vid destinationsutveckling: Kalmar, en historisk guldgruva för besökare2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Tourism today is not just a tool for economic gain, it also includes categories such as development and conservation. Tourism is currently controlled and constructed by history, nature and tradition; three things that concern areas of culture and heritage. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to study the ways in which a destination uses cultural heritage to attract tourists, as well as to determine how the different ways affects the destination as a visitor destination. We conducted our study in Kalmar city, where we held six interviews with various actors linked to tourism and cultural heritage. The results of the interviews linked to the secondary sources showed that Kalmar have many unique assets in terms of heritage, and that the destination is actively working with it. The work on heritage and its development is primarily done through cooperation between the various actors in the destination. The destination sees the internal and external actors as resources and actively use them and work with them to increase Kalmar's image within the tourism industry. It is the cooperation between the players in terms of conservation, use and accessibility that creates the heritage city of Kalmar today.

Läslust hos elever: En studie om elevers tankar kring läslust2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

About 30 % of our greenhouse gas admission comes from the food we are eating, and food plays a crucial role in the choice of destinations. The tourism industry has a great opportunity to affect our food habits. Used in the right way, the industry can teach us to eat more environmental friendly.

Barnsexturism: en konsekvens av ojämlika förhållanden i världen2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This exam work project strives to investigate different roles a teacher can adapt to in classroom situations. The focus is on three different types, gained from a dissertation made by Evelyn Säll where she has investigated teacher students’ opinions about the teacher’s role. These types are:

the Dramatist, the Director and the Illuminator, and five teachers are defined accordingly. Questionnaires and observations are used as a tool in order to come to a conclusion. Both teachers and pupils have answered questionnaires. The observations have been conducted on both teachers and pupils in order to look at different elements that can affect the teacher’s role. The different elements that can affect the role are from two studies made by Martyn Denscombe and Philip Jackson. From the perspective of these elements, an observation is made and the teachers’ response to these elements gives further perspective to the teachers according to Säll’s categories. However, from the viewpoint of the five teachers, the conclusion is made that Säll’s categories are obsolete and cannot be used to define a modern-day teacher. Most teachers today are a little bit of all categories at the same time, depending on the situations arising in different classes and in different lessons.

Nätverkande, Deltagande och Interaktion: en studie baserad på Turismbranschens brukande av Social Media2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is based on an inductive approach where the collected empirical data has been categorized in themes on which we have based the discussion in this paper. Using a qualitative method, nine appropriately selected respondents were questioned with an unstructured interview guide. The transition to a society characterized by interaction has caused a greater part for bilateral communication between consumer and consumer but also between consumer and company. The increased usage and integration on Internet has resulted in so called social media channels. User generated material is published on these media channels which leads to discussions about companies, products and services. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate how the tourism industry utilizes social media in communication and marketing and to present the effects that come from working with media channels. Companies can no longer ignore the fact that consumers discuss them and their range of products and services through social media online. Companies need to adapt to this change in the way they use communication channels in media, surrender some control and let consumers drive the brand. They also need effectively manage their image in order to build and preserve the brand value and create stronger and better relations with their customers.

Cash Transfers in Emergencies: The Lost Money of Turkana2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today, millions of people are living in poverty and in emergency situations with lack of basic needs. This thesis will look into cash transfers in emergencies in Kenya and Kenya’s cash transfer program; Hunger Safety Net Program. Cash transfers are money transfers from organizations/donors to households that intent to provide the beneficiaries with the opportunity to purchase basic needs, in order to assist them to get out of poverty and to address Sustainable Development Goal 1; No poverty.

    The aim of the thesis is to get a larger understanding of when cash transfers intervention are appropriate during emergencies and to get a view of the current image of cash transfers in Kenya. The thesis will have the following research questions;

When it is appropriate to deliver cash transfer in emergencies?

What is the image of Hunger Safety Net Program and cash transfers in emergencies perceived by different actors?

To be able to answer the research question in this thesis, information was gathered through semi-structured interviews and focus groups from four different actor groups; funding sources, implementing agencies, local chief in Lodwar and beneficiaries in two different location in Turkana county. The thesis provides information that cash transfers has a positive impact on the beneficiaries and the local communities. Moreover the findings from the thesis suggests that the cash transfers should be transferred in prevention stage along with other intervention steps, in line with the theoretical frameworks of sustainable livelihood and WHO conceptual framework for the role of cash transfer.

The thesis also provides findings that the image is diverse, however the findings from beneficiaries are that they do not receive their money they are entitling to. The funding source and the implementing agencies claim the opposite and praise the monitoring system that is in place. The thesis findings and conclusions are based on perceptions and therefore no physical evidence is proven, it is up to further research and organizations to investigate where the money is and who is benefitting from the program. The thesis contribution to knowledge are; the cash is appropriate to deliver in prevention stage and at the moment the cash from the Hunger Safety Net Program appears to not reach the beneficiaries, therefore the findings are highly important for knowledge to various stakeholders and for the public.

Pop-culture icons as agents of change?: The roles and fucntions of celebrity activists in peace- and development related global issues2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the possible theoretic and (f)actual role(s) of pop-culture icons in peace and evelopment-related global issues, using the qualitative research methods of text- and discourse analysis. Do pop-culture icons have a role to play at all in this field? If so, what is that role? What are these celebrity activists currently saying and doing on the international development scene and what are their analyses like? What are their current and historical functions? There is support in the academic literature suggesting that celebrity activists can possess vast power resources (scope of influence), (soft) power and (charismatic) authority, which in turn enables them to influence the attitudes and values of (especially young, receptive) people. The findings also show that the most successful celebrity activists have a global reach, as well as access to the international arenas of political power (e. g. the G8 and the World Economic Forum). Celebrity activists seem to be able to "sell" messages in a way that the politicians and officials of today cannot. When they speak, people listen. They further employ a two-level outreach, as they connect with political and economical elite groups as well as with the masses of world citizens in a way that politicians and officials, whose influence is more often limited by traditional nation state boundaries, cannot. I argue that the celebrity activists should be seen as a complement to the civil society and the work of NGO's and INGO's, since it is by further enhancing their work and strengthening their agendas that most of them act.Celebrity activists offer an alternative to the political establishment, which is viewed by suspicion by large groups of citizens, and can play a role in empowerment, inspiration, education, information, awareness raising, fundraising, opinion building and lobbying and function as diplomats, spokespersons, ambassadors, entrepreneurs, convenors and heroic voices.

Dark Tourism -viljan att besöka det mörka och makabra2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Ethnic origin, local labour markets and self-employment in Sweden: A multlilevel approach2012Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We investigate the importance of ethnic origin and local labour markets conditions for self-employment propensities in Sweden. In line with previous research we find differences in the self-employment rate between different immigrant groups as well as between different immigrant cohorts. We use a multilevel regression approach in order to quantify the role of ethnic background, point of time for immigration and local market conditions in order to further understand differences in self-employment rates between different ethnic groups. We arrive at the following: The self-employment decision is to a major extent guided by factors unobservable in register data. Such factors might be i.e. individual entrepreneurial ability and access to financial capital. The individual’s ethnic background and point of time for immigration play a smaller role for the self-employment decision but are more important than local labour market conditions.

Gulliga gossar och fräcka flickor, eller?: Sweet boys and shamless girls, or?2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

A study on the sustainability and the aftermaths of the HESAWA project in Tanzania.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Health through Sanitation and Water project (HESAWA) was first initiated in 1983/84, and was implemented from 1985 to 2002. The project covered three regions in northwestern Tanzania and strived towards improving the health situation in the area through improvements in the water and sanitation sector, as well as by providing health education to the local people.

The aim of this research study is to investigate if the HESAWA project and its implemented structures have been sustainable for the local population in the affected villages in the Geita region in Tanzania. The Sida evaluation manual, Looking Back, Moving Forward, has been used as an analytical frame of interpretation to determine if these goals have been fulfilled.

The research was carried out as a fieldstudy in two villages in the Geita and Mwanza region, just south of Lake Victoria. In total 42 interviews were conducted among families, Water Committees, focus groups of men and women, dispensaries, health clinics, schools, NGOs, and former HESAWA workers. The questions were centered on water, sanitation, and health issues. The most common diseases included diarrhea, bilharzia, worms, and malaria. Even though these diseases have decreased in the area, they are still present to a large extent.

The conclusion drawn from this study is that the HESAWA project did make a difference in the Geita region. The health standard at large in the villages has increased today compared to during the beginning of the HESAWA project. However, the sustainability of the project was not as good as expected. This is mainly due to an increased population, creating a shortage in water supplies, lack of sanitary conditions including poorly constructed latrines, as well as lack of awareness among the local population in regard to health issues. Financial capital was further a main obstacle towards further development and improvement within the health sector in the villages, wherefore future work within this field is of great necessity.

You can take the souvenir out of the destination but you can’t take the destination out of the souvenir: En kvalitativ studie av åttiotalisters syn på souveniren2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to identify the dominating discourse in Swedish newspapers concerning perpetrators who committed sexual offence against children. The study is based on the idea that the media representation play a significant role to the public opinion and awareness of the perpetrators. The study is based upon a selection of 103 articles published between January 2003 and November 2013, taken from four of the biggest daily newspapers in Sweden; Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet. The methodological and theoretical approach in the study has been the one of discourse analysis through which one dominating discourse along with two subsidiary discourses could be identified. The discourse considered to be dominating is the one who presents the perpetrators through the discrepancy between the actions committed and the description of the perpetrator. The description focusing on profession, family status, statements from people in the perpetrators surroundings and professional opinions. A general way on how perpetrators are presented was identified, which derived in the conclusion that the perpetrator often not is unknown to the victim. The perpetrator could also be someone close that appear to be trusted and well thought of by individuals and also by society. The two subsidiary discourses that were identified focused on the gender perspective and showed that there are a small discrepancy between how male and female perpetrators are presented in the newspapers.

Styrketräning inom svensk juniorishockey: En kvalitativ studie i sex J18-elit klubbar2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Volunteer Tourism: Who does it benefit?2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Although altruism is known to be a typical volunteer-trait, our respondents were motivated more or less by self-interest as well, adding to the discussion regarding whether altruism or self-interest is the main motivator for volunteer tourists. Second, the outcome of the volunteer experience is not necessarily as dependent on the motives as it is on what the volunteer makes of it. Something we believe needs further research in literature concerning volunteer tourists. Third, the rewards mainly derived from the free time and the relationships developed between volunteers, and the costs mainly from the projects due to social distance. However, the rewards were generally perceived as greater than the costs considering the total experience, implying that the free time during volunteer experiences is of greater importance than what can be understood from current literature. Forth, the low level of commitment among volunteers leads us to question if it should be considered as a form of pro-poor tourism. Fifth, communication is of great importance in order to achieve cultural interaction, a vital component of volunteer tourism and finally, we found that volunteer tourism can indeed be beneficial, as long as organizations focus on the “right kind” of projects.

Reconceptualising the Gender of Fitness Doping: Performing and Negotiating Masculinity through Drug-Use Practices2015In: Social Sciences, ISSN 2076-0760, E-ISSN 2076-0760, Vol. 4, p. 546-562Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses self-portrayals and gender constructions among Swedish male bodybuilders who are engaged in fitness doping. The empirical material comes from a larger ethnographic investigation into gym culture. The results show that there is a strong propensity to conform with particular gender fantasies that rests heavily on a binary understanding of gendered, doped bodies. However, this storyline does not apprehend the entire self-presentation of the analysed drug users. Negotiations and inclusive subversions of traditional gender norms are also expressed. For example, the narratives show how the use of performance-enhancing substances makes it possible for (heterosexual) men to approach, touch and express feelings of desire towards other men and their bodies. As such, this practice can be viewed as a contestation of hegemonic gender values, in which masculinity and fitness doping are detached from a quite heterosexist understanding, and turned into a symbolic world of homoerotic pleasure.

    Abstract [en]

Men have increasingly been dedicating time and effort to childcare. Consequently, the idea of the ‘new’ emotionally involved father has been discussed in the literature. This article focuses on narratives of divorced Swedish fathers with joint physical custody of their children. This arrangement, a new model of post-divorce parenting, has become increasingly popular in several Nordic countries. The article aims to analyse the experiences attached to and emanating from this particular form of post-divorce agreement, and how it is understood in relation to the Swedish childcare system. The fathers interviewed had a strong ambition to share things equally, as well as to carry on family practices in gender-equal ways. This desire was, however, balanced with a number of obstacles, such as work requirements, living conditions and conceptions of gender differences. In this way, the fathers’ subjective aspirations and strivings were filtered through structural and cultural conditions in society, with clear connections to Swedish family and gender politics.

    Abstract [en]

This article analyzes self-portrayals and gender constructions among female personal trainers within an Internet-mediated framework of fitness culture. The empirical material comes from a close examination of three strategically selected blogs. The result shows that some of the blogs clearly build upon what Connell calls emphasized femininity, as a means of legitimizing and constructing appropriate female fitness. In addition, there are also tendencies of sexualization in text and imagery present. As such, these self-representations are framed within a cultural history of body fitness dominated by stereotypical ways of perceiving masculinity and femininity. However, this does not capture the entire presentation of the self among the analyzed fitness bloggers. The blogs also point in the direction of ongoing negotiations and subversions of traditional gender norms. Among other things, they show how irony and humor are used as a means of questioning normative gender constructions while empowering female fitness and bodyliness.

    Abstract [en]

This article is based on written accounts posted on an online forum called Flashback. The purpose of the study was to explore how participants in this community negotiated themeanings of fitness doping and how such negotiations could be understood in terms of masculinity. The findings indicate that the Internet community studied in this article can be read as an example ofa transformational process in which ordinary rules are questioned and partly put out of play. In theworld of the bodybuilder, the marginal masculinity is, in certain senses, dominant. On the one hand, achieving a muscular and well-trained body is regarded as a core aspect of manhood within thecommunity. Marginal masculinity is thus momentarily transformed into dominant and hegemonicmasculinity. On the other hand, however, the findings also indicate that a drug-using, muscularmasculinity is constructed in negotiation with other central masculine ideals, such as the employableman and the responsible father. Found within the community is a complex and dynamic interplaybetween intersecting discourses of manhood.

    Abstract [en]

There is currently an increasing amount of research on online fatherhood. In this article, we have used international blogs as our empirical data, in order to investigate and create an in-depth picture of fatherhood as it is expressed in various men’s stories about their everyday lives. Three distinct conceptions of fatherhood and masculinity emerge. The first of these positions could be described as a nostalgic position in relation to hegemonic masculinity. The second position is referred to here as complicity. This position indicates a changing landscape of fatherhood and family politics, moving towards gender-equal conditions. Thirdly, we have an inclusive position that reflects a gender-neutral position, and are understood less in terms of masculinity, heteronormativity and gender-divided responsibilities.

It All Starts Now!: Gay Men and Fatherhood in Sweden2017In: Journal of GLBT Family Studies, ISSN 1550-428X, E-ISSN 1550-4298, Vol. 13, no 5, p. 478-497Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates how Swedish gay men pursue and understand fatherhood, using a qualitative, semi-structured methodological approach. We are interested in how practical issues and different fatherhood arrangements are understood and handled by the fathers; how the construction of “rainbow families” is understood in relation to legal issues; parental responsibilities; and thoughts regarding gender-equal and gender-neutral relationships within Swedish society and culture. The results show that the trajectory of gay men toward fatherhood is shaped by a variety of mediating factors such as interactions with agencies, clinics, attorneys, and the state. There are some significant legal, social, financial, and cultural obstacles to realizing gay parenthood. There are also cases where study participants talked about a sense of intolerance expressed toward gay parents within a gay community. Although there are still strong normative dimensions involved in the construction of modern parenthood, the grip of heteronormative views on family life and sexuality is changing; the narratives presented also represent a questioning of the hegemonic image of fatherhood in Sweden. Consequently, it is possible to discern different attempts at transgressing and changing the cultural landscape of fatherhood and the ways people build families today.

The Global Gym: Gender, Health and Pedagogies2014Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Both by participating in the everyday life of fitness professionals, gym-goers and bodybuilders, and by analyzing fitness blogs and other sources, The Global Gym explores fitness centres as sites of learning. The authors examine the kind of learning processes that take place within the gym and the wider fitness industry, and investigate how knowledge is acquired, negotiated and embodied by different agents operating within this context. Beyond this, the book also addresses the construction of gender within fitness culture. Many images of the body beautiful and perfect body ideals are manufactured and sold on a global commercial market. Jesper Andreasson and Thomas Johansson illustrate various extant modes of learning by asking how physical, psychological and cultural knowledge about health and the body is incorporated into people's (gender) identity in a local, national and global gym and fitness context.

    Abstract [en]

Through a close study of blogs, where male fitness experts share their expertise, this article analyses how masculinity are framed within the Internet-mediated context of the fitness culture. This is done against the background of Connell's theory of masculinity, and recent critiques of the concept of hegemony. Through an in-depth analysis of three blogs, we get a complex and contradictory image of the different forms of masculinity portrayed in these blogs and in fitness culture at large. The texts and imagery on the blogs clearly exceeds the criteria/limits of traits and norms traditionally considered male or female. In doing so, the may contribute to an increased acceptance for, for example, gay identities and other submissive masculinities.

The new fitness geography: the globalisation of Japanese gym and fitness culture2017In: Leisure Studies, ISSN 0261-4367, E-ISSN 1466-4496, Vol. 36, no 3, p. 383-394Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Using a minor case study of the local fitness culture scene in Tokyo, Japan, this exploratory and qualitative article aims to discuss and analyse the consequences of globalisation of fitness culture. The article focuses particularly on how fitness culture is negotiated in Japanese society – at a national, local and subjective level, and in relation to attempts to uniformly rationalise and standardise gym and fitness culture. The results indicate that the fitness geography is changing, and through the establishment of a globalised fitness culture, Japanese youth are following in the footsteps of many other countries. However, this does not mean that we are witnessing a homogenisation process, or a completely McDonaldised version of fitness culture in Japan. Instead, this cultural phenomenon is shaped and formed in particular ways, pointing towards certain strong national sentiments concerning body ideals, views on gender and exercise and relaxation. For example, the cuteness ideal has a strong influence on the way young women talk about and perceive body ideals and corporeal performances in Japan.

I sanningens ögonblick: berättelser om hur frontlinepersonal levererar service2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, I investigate the use of SWOT analysis and the resource based view as tools to elaborate a business plan and in academic research by assessing the two methods’ strengths and weaknesses.

I found that SWOT analysis is useful to structure and prioritise information in a short and concise way. Even though, the information and the information collection methods as well as the concepts and theories used in combinaton with the model and their quality is of the most importance for a proper use of the model.

The resource based view is useful to reflect over which internal resources are the most valuable for the company, even though it can be difficult to assess the most important assets, i.e. the intangible assets. I also found that the fact that the resource based view, which is a explanantory theory, is used as a predicative theory causes uncertainaty and is problematic.

Cooperation of INGOs in times of humanitarian crises.: A case study from Rwanda.2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is looking at the cooperation between international NGOs within one particular humanitarian crisis, namely the genocide and following refugee crisis in Rwanda 1994. While researching the topic of NGO cooperation, it became clear that plenty research about NGO cooperation can be found whereas very little research exists concerning the cooperation of INGOs. Hence, the relevance to research this topic further stems from the assumption that cooperation is an important tool to organize humanitarian work more efficiently and should, therefore, be improved. The work at hand is a desk study and tries to answer whether cooperation exists and how it is pursued. A theoretical framework was created by combining a model of functions that civil society should fulfil with an inter-organizational knowledge sharing approach in order to elaborate on those questions. The used method is the case study approach. The history of Rwanda in 1994 was used as a setting for the study because it is one particularly well-researched topic and provides a good entry point to explore the field of INGO cooperation with other INGOs. In conclusion, the results show that cooperation exists and is pursued in different sectors. Successful cooperation does, however, always require the willingness to reduce competition and find compromises. The extent to which INGOs are doing so varies. In the future, more organizational documentation is needed to truly explore this topic in-depth. It should also be noted that serious problems were met in finding good sources of information from the INGOs involved in this study and that they did not actively reply to requests of supplying further information.
