What do you know when you know something about history?2014In: Historical Encounters: A journal of historical consciousness, historical cultures and history education, E-ISSN 2203-7543, Vol. 1, no 1, p. 50-61Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

What does it mean to know something about history? If you know “your” history, what is it that you know? For many, it is definitely about being able to provide dates, to state what happened or how people lived in the past; while for others it means being able to conduct genealogical research or being able to navigate in a video game that takes place in an historical environment. In a school context, the issue of knowledge is always central. Pupils and teachers meet in, around and through knowledge, and moreover, knowledge is assessed daily. This article addresses how pupils in the last years of the nine-year period of Swedish compulsory schooling regard knowledge about history. The aim is to investigate how Swedish 15 years old pupils in Grade 9 describe knowledge about history, as well as what type of knowledge about history pupils appear to hold.

Bridging historical consciousness and moral consciousness: Promises and challenges2017In: Historical Encounters: A journal of historical consciousness, historical cultures and history education, E-ISSN 2203-7543, Vol. 4, no 1, p. 1-13Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This special issue is the result of the workshop, Towards an integrated theory of historical and moral consciousness, supported by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (The Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences) and Suomen kasvatuksen ja koulutuksen historian seura (The Finnish Society for the History of Education) and held at the University of Helsinki, in 2015. History teaching and social studies education are increasingly expected to develop, among other things, students’ historical consciousness. This goal is highly relevant for students’ ability to deal constructively with controversial issues of history which is an important civic competence in the situation where in many societies’ political arguments concerning, for example, citizenship rights, ethnic and cultural diversity, and democracy are only too often fuelled by simplistic narratives of historical change and continuity. However, there is a blank spot in the existing research on historical consciousness in that intersections between historical and moral consciousness remain very much unexplored. This special issue seeks to identify promising theoretical and conceptual points of convergence for future interdisciplinary studies of historical and moral consciousness. Contributors are from the fields of history, educational research, social psychology, and philosophy.

    Abstract [sv]

To Make and to Experience Meaning: How Time Travels are Perceived among Participants2017In: The Archaeology of Time Travel: Experiencing the Past in the 21st Century / [ed] Bodil Petersson, Cornelius Holtorf, Oxford: Archaeopress, 2017, p. 113-128Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Time travels provide the opportunity for participants to make an imaginary trip back in time to learn about places, times and events, and to learn about themselves. To travel in time can be described as an encounter between the past and the present. Such an experience encourages participants to relate the present to the past and to reflect upon their own lives as they interact with another time. In that way one can replace an ‘us and them’ attitude with an approach that unites people and highlights what they have in common. This type of encounter carries the potential for meaning- making. Merging the ‘now and then’ with ‘similar and different’ can make it possible to understand one’s own place in – and relation to – history. But how do participants perceive time travels, what do they learn, what is their view of the past, the present, the future, themselves and the other? In the participator’s reflections we have identified how they perceive different narratives with potential for meaning-making.

I farmors kök blev jag människa: historiedidaktiska texter av K G Jan Gustafson2013Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Social perspective taking and moral reflection [judgment] in lower secondary school students’ responses to historical moral dilemmas: observations from a Swedish-Finnish survey study2019In: NOFA7 Abstracts: Stockholm University, 13 - 15 May 2019, Stockholm: Stockholm University, 2019, p. 20-20Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

One the general learning objectives in school education is often development of students’ abilities of empathy, as part of their ability to deal with moral questions in ethically commendable ways. In history teaching one of the main learning objectives is development ofstudents’ historical empathy, i.e. their ability of social perspective taking that involves putting oneself in the position of historical actors and understanding the cultural, social and psychological factors that probably were present in the historical situation. Our paper discusses the relation between development of historical empathy and development of moral sensitivity as learning objectives, and it presents the matrix that we have used in the preliminary analysis of the complexity of students’ responses in a questionnaire which involved historical dilemmas. The question discussed in the paper is part of a wider research project on intersections of historical and moral consciousness.

The empirical material discussed in the paper derives from a questionnaire study of c. 200 Swedish and Finnish lower secondary school students (9th grade). Students were asked to put themselves in the situation of particular historical actors and to answer questions that involved dealing with moral dilemmas. The students were asked to read an excerpt from Christopher Browning’s book Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland (orig. 1992) that describes the actions of men in the Police Battalion in the Holocaust during World War II. After reading the text the students were asked to answer open questions relating to the events in the excerpt. The material was analysed using a theory-driven qualitative analysis and the students’ answers were interpreted as expressions of their ability of social perspective taking and moral sensitivity. The analytic frame was built on theories of levels of historical empathy (Lee & Ashby 2001), social perspective taking (Hartmann & Hasselhorn 2008), and moral sensitivity (Rest 1986). The paper analyses the patterns that are visible in the students’ responses, the focus being on potential connections between levels of

Working with the Cold War: Types of Knowledge in Swedish and Australian History textbook Activities2016In: Journal of Educational Media, Memory and Society, ISSN 2041-6938, E-ISSN 2041-6946, Vol. 8, no 2, p. 58-82Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents a comparative analysis of pupils’ activities dealing with the Cold War in Swedish and Australian history textbooks. By focusing on text- book activities to which pupils respond in relation to their learning of a particular topic, this study identifies knowledge types included in a selection of history text- books. The study also focuses on the question whether, and if so how, social values are evident in activities concerning the Cold War. The authors develop a matrix that makes it possible to examine knowledge types and social values conveyed by ac- tivities. By analyzing textbook activities, this article exposes the hidden curriculum present in the textbooks on the basis of underlying and unstated values present in the activities, and at the same time identifies the way in which the selected text- books incorporate these values.

Busstrafikens satsning för en hållbar miljö: En fallstudie över Växjös busstrafik2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

During the 20th century, our planet and its population have faced a number of environmental challenges. The climate on earth is changing and it is most likely due to human activity and the destruction of the earth's resources, ecosystems and waterways. More recently a very active environmental movement is taking up more space in people's lives. In many ways, it can be considered that climate change, and the movement that accompanied it, created a generation of people who proclaim a doom as a result of human destruction of the planet. I have conducted qualitative online interviews with nine representatives from the Church of Sweden, mainly church pastors from southern Sweden, to see how they relate to climate change, their views on judgement day and how they respond to people in their office who have anxiety and are concerned about climate change and the possible destruction of the human race. The result shows that all respondents in the survey place a great focus on man's individual and collective responsibility in the care for the earth, that is, according to them, God's creation. Through Berger’s social-constructivist theories of secularization, the study shows that the climate movement itself sometimes lacks Christian values of optimism and Christian concepts, such as God's grace, forgiveness, and hope. It thus gives the impression that the movement in some ways has a secular character. In contrast to this, the representatives of the Swedish Church claim to have a hopeful attitude and mostly believe that climate change is not part of the eschatological prophecies described in the Bible. However, they often reason that one cannot know for certain what the future holds, but as they hope and long for Christ's return, they have no fear but instead put their faith in hope and in God. They believe there is a clearer optimism on their part in the form of forgiveness, grace and hope and are willing to lead by example by caring for people who fear and encourage them to hope and the trust in God.

Libertalia, bokstavligen och bildligt talat?: En studie av Captain Charles Johnsons verks skildringar av Libertalia genom nutida historikers tolkningar2018Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Piracy has a big mysterious stamp. In the west, we have a clear picture of the 17th and 18th century pirates through stories about prostheses, planks, parrots and eyepatches. These stories come from one source, Captain Charles Johnson's legendary work that addresses a large number of pirates and their lives on the seven seas. This study investigates how modern historians relate critically to Captain Charles Johnson's work and how they interpret his stories about the fictional pirate utopia, Libertalia. What are their purposes and what have they been affected by? By applying a social-constructive theory, the purpose of course becomes evident by seeing what truths these historians created and carried on and how Charles Johnson's work was used in history. Through a social constructive study influenced by source criticism of the works of Marcus Rediker, David Cordingly and Philip Gosse, their interpretations have been perceived as very different. The different historians seem to have their own personal agendas and perceptions and have through their expertise created perceptions and stories that may characterize future generations' perception of the golden age of the piracy and, in particular, their image of Libertalia as a fair society without rulers.

The researchers' source-critical approach varies from seeing Johnson's work as narrative stories for future generations to the fact that Johnson primarily had a profit interest in the authorship. These ideas, however, are something that the historians themselves have concluded and thus become part of the social construction we call reality, in which we exist.

    Abstract [en]

This research project examines how the housewives’ association in the small town Västervik operated to make women and housewives much stronger in their everyday life. The housewives’ association in Västervik arranged all kind of different activities, for example, presentations of various household products, studying and charity work. As previous research has stated, the association could not really influence those in power, even if they were represented in numerous boards and wanted to reform many aspects of the society. The association’s strength was their impact on the local society and that they meant a great deal to those who were involved in their communion. The analysis of the results indicated that the housewives’ association mainly wanted to establish the woman as a stereotypical maternal woman. Furthermore, the investigation showed that the association in Västervik reduced their activities between 1950 and 1978, and this can be related to the historical context of Sweden during this time period, for example, the changing role of women in the society.

    Abstract [en]

Focusing on contacts and influences between Scandinavia and the Roman Empire during Roman Iron Age and Migration Period, the essay aims to present a way to divide those contacts into different sets of levels. Looking into the archaeological material of four Scandinavian places with rich contexts of Roman objects, the central settlement complexes of Uppåkra and Gudme and the graves of Öremölla and Hoby, the object is to try to classify certain objects into certain levels of connections to the Roman Empire. The contacts will be sorted out in levels from “regular” of less importance contacts to individual contacts where an involvement of a deeper perspective for the Scandinavian society can be identified.

This essay is focused on Öland during the Iron Age, with focus specifically on the Roman Iron Age and the Migration period. The study takes its starting point in the large number of fortifications that was active across Öland at the time. The essays main area of investigation will be the central and southern parts of Öland as the fortifications, together with other parts of the Iron Age society around them such as graves and settlement, will be presented. The landscape in which the fortifications and their surroundings are placed will also be described. With the Migration Period being a keyword for almost all the fortifications on Öland, the subject will also be to describe if any sort of change can be seen in the settlement patterns during this unstable and troubled time. This will all be presented trough sources describing work of the archaeological investigations that has been done in those places.

    Abstract [en]

This article analyses the construction and dissemination of natural-history knowledge in the eighteenth century.  It takes the mapping and narration of Orkney as a case study, focusing on the local minister and amateur natural-historian George Low and his network of patron-client relationships with such prominent natural historians as Joseph Banks and Thomas Pennant.  It focuses too on Low’s network of informants and assistants among local island farmers, and argues that canonical natural-history texts were the products of collaborative and interdependent processes that included a large number of actors from all strata of society. To conceptualise how natural-history knowledge was created in this period, the article applies the metaphoric description ‘an ecology of knowledge’. This approach enables a focus on a large number of actors, their collaboration and influence on each other, while also paying attention to asymmetrical power relationships in which competition and appropriation took place.

En gång gruvstad - alltid gruvstad?: Kirunas näringsliv under förändring - men hur och mot vad?2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This survey has as its aim to see how two local newspapers in the city Växjö and the region of Kronoberg in Sweden reported and acted in connection to the referendum taking place in 1922 whether or not alcoholic beverages should be prohibited. In order to do this we analyzed Smålandsposten and Nya Växjöbladet to see their reporting. We found that the numbers of articles and debate contributions increased during the months closer to the referendum. We also found that Nya Växjöbladet where slightly supporting the prohibition of alcohol while Smålandsposten where against it. The arguments used by both sides during the debate were also analyzed. Here, we discovered, that many of the arguments where used several times and by many different operators. Some of the most used arguments that were negative to the prohibition were related to the possible economic struggles that could affect the Swedish society. The arguments used by operators against the prohibition were based on Christian values and the greater good of society.

Visualisering av platser: En undersökning av Uddevallas destinationsimage online2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Visual representations are important components in the construction of our social life. They depict the world around us and shape peoples everyday behavior. They are a medium through which we communicate and can be understood as social constructions dependent upon cultural understandings. Pictorial representations have become part of the economic sphere and are used in tourism in order to overcome its immaterial character by providing a physical evidence for the tourist. Coloured by tourism ideology, they transform a place into a destination. This study examines visual representations of Uddevalla through a lens of promotional photographs published on Instagram and the online tourism destination image they project based on a compound content analysis-semiotic analysis method. The aim is to exemplify the visualisation of places and provide an understanding for the explicit and implicit messages conveyed through denotative and connotative signs in pictures. This is done by answering three questions: (1) What representations are being used to form a destination image and what image is being projected? (2) How does the mediated massage within the pictures correspond to the destination profile?(3) In what way is ideology being expressed? The result show a synecdochical image of a coastal destination which should be experienced outdoors through physical activities or by gazing over picturesque and idyllic landscapes. However, questions remain regarding the relationship between the projected destination image and the intended destination profile developed by tourism planners.

”Fotbollen är en del av min identitet”: En kvalitativ studie av menings – och identitetsskapande inom svenska supporterkulturen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper concerns in which ways people from local communities’ value cultural heritage sites in their region and how they perceive their possibility to be an active part in its management. There have over the last decade been a number of performed studies showing that civic participation in the governing of heritage sites is to be sought for, simultaneously being essential when it comes to the benefits that may be achieved. There is, however, a criticism towards the managers of these cultural heritage sites that they fail to consider the local community, and consequently losing  peoples trust.  Identifying that field as an area that requires further studies, this case study aim to examine how people from the local community values the cultural heritage site Äskhults by and in which manner they feel able to participate in its management. Interviews is the method this study is based upon, where i have conducted eight separate interviews which has been structured around predetermined questions.

In this particular study the results show that a historical value is frequently referred to by the locals, and is what most of them treasured about the heritage site. It also became clear that the respondents highly valued their communication with the operators involved, however, the respondents impression on whether they actually could influence the decisions and governing of the cultural heritage site was less distinct and left some to be desired.

"Doctor, use the Force": En fenomenografisk studie av individers berättelser angående sitt religiösa intresse gentemot Temple of the Jedi Order och Whovianism   2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I have studied the two new religious phenomena, Temple of the Jedi Order and Whovianism, based on the cognitive concept of man dominated by schemas that characterize the outcome of adequate response to new situations. This principle is about how man faces new situations through old knowledge and experience of similar events. For this study, I analyzed selected stories in which individuals describe their religious interest and involvement in the Star Wars movies, and the related religious community Temple of the Jedi Order, as well as the television series Doctor Who, with the associated religious community Whovianism. This study was inspired by phenomenographic method by which researchers focus on the perceived and how it is conveyed in the respective story. The results of this study show that new religious phenomena, such as the Temple of the Jedi Order and Whovianism, can be explained using the theory of cognitive schemas.  The study shows that the individuals, whose stories have been examined, use ancient knowledge and experiences on the different aspects conveyed by Star Wars and Doctor Who and through this a new religious community is born.

Varför väljer vi tåget?: En undersökning av resandeutvecklingen på Kustbanan2014Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]
