Den hårfina gränsen: Diskussioner om kvinnors orakade armhålor på internetforumet Flashback2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine discussions on the Swedish internet forum “Flashback” regarding female body hair and the cultural norms that surround it. The discussion is centered around a broadcasted event in which a woman’s hairy armpit was incidentally shown, with a lot of viral hate as a result. Our purpose with this study is to get a deeper insight into viral hate towards women who challenge gender norms. This led us to analyse part of a thread detailing the event. Through critical discourse analysis we identified four themes that were common in the discussions regarding female body hair: personal attacks on the woman, defending her or questioning the purpose of the thread, debates for and against societal norms and body ideals, and hypocritical double standards. By using media and communication perspectives on gender and norms, as well as structuration and homosocial theories, we identified power structures that were present both in the thread and in the whole of the internet forum. Our hope is that this study will aid in further research into how hate is communicated on the internet and gender norms in particular.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to examine how Sweden’s two biggest tabloids, Aftonbladet and Expressen, frame spectacular crime and specifically how they covered the Helicopter robbery that occurred in 2009. We identified three main participants in the story, the police, the culprits and the victims. We examined how much and what kind of space the identified participants were given and how the two newspapers constructed the participants in a dramaturgic sense.

Using a quantitative content analysis method we found that the time period included 433 articles in both newspapers. From the original articles, we picked and examined 19 articles with a qualitative content analysis method and also used framing theory in order to be able to examine how the participants were portrayed in Aftonbladet and Expressen.

The culprits were given far most space in both Aftonbladet and Expressen. The study show that the police was given second most space and that the victims were hardly ever written about at all, in contrast to recent studies showing that victims of crime often are depicted as the main character in articles regarding crime. The results also show that the story as a whole carried a lot of resemblance to the classic Hollywood movie plot. The police were portrayed as incompetent, creating a conflict within the justice system community. The culprits were portrayed as the protagonist of the story with highly competent features, whilst the victims were portrayed as scared and helpless.

"Jag mår bra, allt är perfekt": En kritisk diskursanalys i hur Aftonbladet framställde en terrormisstänkt man2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet portrayed a man who was a suspect of preparation of terrorist crimes, in articles published between 19th of November 2015 and the 23rd of Januari 2016. The aim was to get a deeper understanding of the portraiture of the person in question, and to point out existing discourses in the analysed material with the help of critical discourse analysis as explained by Norman Fairclough and his theories about identities, social representation and relations. Theories about social representation and postcolonialism were used as a springboard for the analysis. In the study we found two distinct discourses. The discourse for the period prior the man’s release was clearly influenced by denuniation and alienation, and the one found for the period after the man’s release were welcoming. Conclusions drawn from the study are that Aftonbladet portrays the man in a stereotypical manner, as well as legitimizes their own power of influence.

    Abstract [en]

Throughout history, sex and sexuality has been a subject for many debates. It has been regulated through both authorities and social norms. Female sexuality has been seen both as a symbol for motherhood and as a sin. Women have also been judged both for their virginity and their lack of it. This matter appears regularly in the media, whereas women still are objectified and judged for how they choose to exert their sexuality. Therefor, we have chosen to study how this appears in teenage movies in modern times, through a case study of the movies Easy A, Juno and The first time. We want to examine which kind of messages that are transmitted to youths about women and their sexuality. We have used the variables informal sexual education, slut shaming, victim blaming, the madonna/whore complex and objectification. Our results shows that women’s sexuality still is criticized and regulated by society and its values.

Pentagon <3 Hollywood = sant: En studie i hur vida Pentagons involvering i filmskapande bidrar till ökad etnocentrism2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper is on propaganda in popular culture, with a main focus on therelations between propaganda and ethnocentrism. The object of this paper hasbeen the movie Godzilla (2014) on which I conducted a qualitative discourseanalysis to extract a deeper meaning of the movie. The theories that I've usedin this paper are: postcolonialism, orientalism, ethnocentrism and Us-and-Them. By using these theories in combination with my qualitative discourseanalysis I've been able to establish a clear pattern of the relationship betweenpropaganda in film and ethnocentrism. The way the film choses to portray itsdifferent elements defines they way the elements are interpeted by theviewer, which causes the viewer to feel a strengthened ethnocentrism. Thispaper also offers a discussion on the consequences of that relationship.

Från flanellskjortor till djupa känslor: En narrativ textanalys om hur män framställs i tidningen Café2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Café magazine is a Swedish men’s lifestyle magazine aimed at men between the ages of 18 and 35. The magazine writes about what men should wear, what they should drink, which new gadgets they should buy and a lot more. They aim to teach men about how to live their lives. This study focuses on how the magazine writes about men, and how they portray masculinities. The questions this study has tried to answer are -How are the men portrayed in the lifestyle magazine Café? And - Which images of masculinities are being distributed to the readers?

What we found was that the normative images of masculinities are being distributed to the readers, but also that the magazine was trying to break the existing normative by talking about deeper feelings and therapy with the men being interviewed for the magazine. It seems the magazine are trying to keep up with the fast-changing world but not quite being able to keep up. According to Giddens and Sutton (2014) it would be helpful for the readers of magazines to be exposed to normative breaking material. That way they could start breaking normatives as well as the magazine.

Vem är syndabocken i den tragiska olyckan?: En kvalitativ studie om rapporteringen av bussolyckan i Sveg2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how three newspapers covered the question of guilt while reporting about the bus accident in Sveg where three school children died. The questions examined were: How does the local newspaper Borås Tidning and Barometern and the evening newspaper Aftonbladet report about the question of responsibility of the bus accident in Sveg? What are the differences and similarities between the three newspapers? We made a discourse analysis of 23 news articles from three different newspapers. The result shows that the newspapers reported about possible reasons that caused the disaster. If the society had taken responsibility and maintained the road then maybe the bus had not crashed. The passengers are described as guilty because of their lack of using seat belts. Simultaneously the bus driver is represented as irresponsible who could have prevented the misfortune by not driving so recklessly. Another aspect of the question of responsibility produce the bus company as the scapegoat of the tragical incident because of the miserable working conditions. We discovered that the newspapers are driven by figuring out the question of guilt in order to give answers to the readers about the tragedy in Sveg. Conclusions drawn from this study are that the media coverage are influenced by news values like their proximity to the persons involved.

Nyhetskommentering på Facebook: En studie om hur deliberativa kommentarerna är på nyhetssajternas facebooksidor2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine in which extent the comments about news in

the comment fields, on Swedish news sites Facebook pages were deliberative.

To fulfill this purpose we used a quantitative content analysis as a method to interpret

the data that we collected about 2203 reader comments from three news sites Facebook

pages. Jürgen Habermas theory about deliberative democracy together with theories

about public space and Web 2.0 were the theories we based our study on. To determine

that a comment was deliberative it had to contain an argument and be written with

tolerance and respect. Our result showed that most comments lacked either one or both

of these criteria’s and therefore weren’t deliberative. This study helps to show in which

extent the comments about news on Facebook are deliberative.

En nyhetshändelse: Hur tre svenska tidningar skildrade Regeringskrisen 2014.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Huvudfråga: Hur skildrades Regeringskrisen 2014 i svensk dagspress?

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to examine how the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet represented the leading characters in the reporting about the murder of Yara Alnajjar. The questions examined were: How is Yara, the perpetrators and the municipality of Karlskrona represented in Aftonbladet? How is the relationship between the leading characters of the texts constructed? And what is the relationship between the characters and the audience?

To approach this we made a discourse analysis of ten texts from Aftonbladet, all related to the tragic series of events that costed Yara Alnajjar her life.

The result showed that Yara Alnajjar was represented as a classic victim-hero who’s only job was to be small, innocent, defenseless and to gather sympathy from the audience. And even though she had a different cultural background she became a part of “us”. The female perpetrator was, in contrast to the victim, represented as a mad non-woman. Discredited through her odd behaviour which contained both evil and sad moments. Next to her was the male perpetrator who, despite also being sentenced for the murder, gathered sympathy from the audience. As well as being represented as someone in the deep regret and sadness. The municipality of Karlskrona in return was both given blame for their non-actions and forgiven despite it, since Aftonbladet considered them to have tried to help.

We discovered that the media constructions in Aftonbladet were embedded with roles, archetypes and myths. It also showed that not everyone would fit into their roles so easily.

Den gråtande journalisten: En studie av publikens syn på subjektiv nyhetsrapportering2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how the public responds to the journalists’ use of subjectivity in the reporting of broadcasting news. The investigation is a qualitative study based on nine interviews with respondents in ages of 21 to 25 from different parts of Sweden. After showing five examples of news reporting with a subjective approach, the respondents gave their look on the use of subjectivity. The theoretical frame of the investigation is founded on the theory of framing (de Vreese, 2005; Entman, 1993) and the discussion concerning the terms objectivity and subjectivity (e.g. Westerståhl, 1972).

The investigation shows that the respondents saw the use of subjectivity in news reporting as something that made them able to connect and identify to the news and the journalist. It also showed that the news was made more comprehensible. The investigation, on the other hand, also showed that the respondents felt like the journalists made assumptions for them. Irrespective of the reaction, the investigation showed clear results of the fact that the respondents own values was an underlying factor in their stance to subjectivity.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to examine similarities and differences between how two Swedish newspapers value its content and what kind of news is published on the sport pages. Our method in this study was a quantitative content analysis where we analyzed 560 articles from the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet. The most important results we got from our study was that most of the articles was about football and ice hockey. Especially articles about football dominated in both newspapers. Another result we found was that there was a big difference when it came to articles about men and women. In the newspaper Aftonbladet almost 85 percent of the articles were about men and in Dagens Nyheter the number were around 66 percent.

Etik - en lyxvara i reklambranschen?: En studie av reklametik i teori och praktik2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this interview study I have examined eleven Swedish advertisers and professional communicators and their view of ethics in the advertising industry. The purpose of the study was to shed light on how they see their ethical responsibilites, as well as trying to understand how they reason in regard to ethics as a whole. The main research questions regard the distinction between business and economic responsibilities towards their clients and societal ethical responsibilities, which ethical questions are of importance to them, and how they believe the industry should be regulated.

The theoretical framework of the study uses media ethics, social responsibility theory, media accountability theory, and stockholder and stakeholder theory as its base. The study was performed using a qualitative method through interviews and the interpretation of these. The results of the study finds that the consulted advertisers have set opinions of what they themselves would decline to work with for ethical reasons, and has also been able to identify five main categories of ethical issues that they attach great importance to. The advertisers state a strong sense of ethical responsibility, but also that they may have a hard time exercising that sense if their clients offer resistance, as the economical implications of losing a client often is a strong incentive to let the client have their way. The study also found that the advertisers thought the current system of regulation of the industry to be invisible and toothless, and instead they sought more public discussion as a form of regulation. In conclusion I have been able to ascertain that the consulted advertisers have a generally high grade of self-reflection in regards to ethical matters, although they can feel restricted about how well they are able to exercise the responsibility they feel towards society as a whole.

Dömd eller dömande?: Nyhetsdiskursen av Sveriges Domstolar i artiklar från DN och SvD2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to examine the different perspectives that emerged during the debate surrounding the right-wing newspaper “Nya Tider” and their participation at the Swedish bookfair in Gothenburg back in 2017. The study relies on the theoretical foundation that is known as Spiral of Silence and Agenda-Setting. But is examined and operationalized by the historical perspective given by John Durham Peters in his book “courting the abyss”. Peters portrays in his book a variety of different takes on the free speech phenomenon. The study’s aim was then to see if similar perspective were protruding now as it has before.A research question regarding what perspective were protruding in the debate that followed “Nya Tider” and their announcement that they were going to attend the bookfair once again where therefore coined. The direct translation of this questions is “What perspective of where the limit of free speech should be drawn is present in the Swedish media outlet regarding the debate of “Nya Tider” participation at the book fair in Gothenburg 2017.In order to examine what perspective protruded in the debate the approach of a qualitative content analysis was deemed the best way to examine the phenomenon. A total of (n) 36 articles were systematically analyzed and a total of 4 perspectives where formed, the liberal, the absolutistic libertarian, the opponent perspective and the victim perspective. Each one different from each other. The study also examined the level occurrence of the different perspective and found that in 18 out of the 36 article’s the opponent perspective where present, whereas the absolutistic libertarian perspective only occurs in 4 out of the 36 articles’. A big difference where therefor found in what coverage the different perspectives were given in the Swedish news outlets. In a time where political censorship is at a rise around Europe with the implementation of laws that prevent people from speaking their minds. Or compelling them to address people a certain way, not by choice but by legislation, the need to examine what perspectives are occurring in our media might for the uneducated seem like a vague way to approach a complicated matter. But Agenda-Setting research has shown that the media agenda affects both the public agenda as well as the legislative part of our society. Therefore, a lack of occurrence of certain perspectives can also affect what laws are put in place. It is therefore imperative to examine what sort of perspective occurs in the Swedish debate to prevent an infraction of the Swedish free speech law, and to keep Sweden a free, secular society.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

59 government agencies in Sweden participate in the programme Gender Main- streaming in Government Agencies (sv: Jämställdhetsintegrering i myndigheter, JiM). This programme aims to better the equal opportunities for women and men to shape society and their own lives. At the same time the social networks are steadily rising in popularity and they are excellent tools for the government agencies to communicate their values regarding equality to a broad audience in an easy and effective matter. Previous research focus mostly on the effect the content of social media have on the audience but the aim of this study was rather to examine how men and women are represented on Instagram accounts run by government agencies. This was done through a quantitative content analysis where 400 pictures posted on Instagram by Arbetsförmedlingen, Försvarsmakten, Polismyndigheten and Sida were analysed with the help of variables based on previous studies. The results showed that both men and women are portrayed with certain gender stereotypes and that government agencies are more or less equal in their frequent use of men and women in their Instagram posts.

Mediekoncentration i Sverige: En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av Dagens Nyheter2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Bonnier is one of the largest media companies in the Nordic. Because of their strong position in the market, they have an opportunity to influence the media landscape in Sweden. Due to the affects of media concentration, we wanted to find out if Bonniers concentrated ownership changes the outcome of news in the swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Through an quantitive content analysis, we examined how Dagens Nyheter writes news about the two swedish TV-channels TV4 and SVT. Since Bonnier is the owner of both Dagens Nyheter and TV4, it was interesting to see if the news about the two channels somehow differ. Our results indicate that there where no major differences in how the two channels were represented in Dagens Nyheter. Although, the newspaper seems to put more focus on the TV4-profiles, as well as they use more pictures for the articles about TV4. According to the results of this study, our conclusion is that media concentration is not yet a threat to the media landscape in Sweden, at least not when it comes to the cross-ownership of TV-channels and newspaper.

Syndaren: Människan: En kritisk diskursanalys av klimatfrågans gestaltning i svensk dagspress2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine the framing of the issue of climate change in two swedish daily newspapers

. 55 texts, 36 of which are from the morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter and 19 from the tabloid Aftonbladet go through a critical discourse analysis in terms of how they portray climate change itself, the actors involved, blame and responsibility for causing and alleviating the problem, possible solutions, system criticism as well as which ideologies and power relationships are supported by existing narratives. Louw's understanding of mass media as hype, Fairclough's perspectives on discourse, Strömbäck's perspectives on agenda setting and Palm's study of the factors behind news production have been central to the theoretical approach of the study, as have Machin and Mayr's work on critical discourse analysis. The results show that there are two main recurring discourses in the analysed material. One describes climate change as a threat. This narrative describes a struggle between civilisation and nature and places blame on all humans in a manner that closely relates to the christian concept of original sin. It is a discourse that emphasizes the following of rules and strict moral codes, naming those who do not follow the Swedish example as cheaters or villains while excluding non-civilized humans. The other, economic, discourse frames the problem of climate change as one of costs and incentives. The climate is given a monetary value, suggesting everything involved is as exchangeable as money. No alternative discourse challenges the two discourses, which interact and reinforce eachother, both legitimizing human domination of nature as well as current power relations in society.

Having a boat before the flood strikes will save you. Having a sail will take you places.: A qualitative study on how an effective crisis communication is impacted by intercultural competence, crisis leadership and social media.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Thirteen qualitative interviews have been conducted with key individuals who have profound knowledge and experience in the subject of crisis communication. The thesis used a theory testing approach and highlights the main issues regarding the influence of intercultural competence in crisis information, and to what extent social media channels are used for crisis communication. Also, it covers how the leadership during crises affects the communication from the perspectives of the key individuals. In this empirical investigation, the analytical method of thematization has been used in order to select essential themes throughout the qualitative interviews. These themes have been compared to the relevant theories within the subject - crisis communication, intercultural competence, and social media in crisis situations. The emerging conclusions from this study were the importance of pre-existing relations between organizations and authorities in crisis situations, and the amplifications of crisis communication through crisis networks operating between organizations. Another conclusion was that proactive crisis communication plans need to be of a consise and general design to be practical in crisis situations. Furthermore, one conclusion was that most organizations according to the interviewees were aware of the absence of intercultural competence, but due to lack of resources this was not prioritized. The last conclusion was that social media channels have a high interest level during crisis situations, but was seldom used to a large extent during crises

Interaktivitet på YouTube: En kvalitativ användarstudie av interaktivitetens roll på YouTube2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is an investigation of the level- and importance of interactivity on YouTube for the active user. YouTube is a great example of a user-friendly Internet environment which enables the users to take part in a virtual community where they can create the content and, with the various functions the site has to offer, interact with each other. With Uses and Gratifications as a tool for this research we look at the motivations and needs of the user and how they come into play on the most popular video distribution site in the world today. Qualitative interviews on Swedish respondents give us insight in how the YouTube-users with their own words perceive this relatively new highly interactive era. We focus on a narrow group of the most popular age-group of YouTube-users to go deeper - not to expand. Results show our discovery of patterns that indicates social motives behind user interaction on YouTube, but does not prove these patterns to be generalizable to YouTube users as a whole. We also discover interesting inconsistencies which give us insight in what further studies can develop.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this study was to elucidate the manifested differences in printed daily newspapers and online e-sport papers. In addition we explored the different priorities of news selection in the two types of newspapers.

The method we conducted in this study was quantitative content analysis and our material consisted of 150 articles from each group of papers, for a total of 300 articles. Our results were analyzed using framing theory, agenda setting theory and commercialization.

Our findings included a heavy emphasis on social issues from the daily newspapers and an equally heavy emphasis on the sporting side of esport from the esport papers. Additionally we could state that e-sport papers thoroughly exercised the usage of pictures in their articles, but interviews were rare.

Before this study the scientific area of e-sports journalism was completely unexplored. This inspired us to become the pioneers of the field. We hope to open up this field for further scientific research.

Protest eller bara nagellack:: En narrativ analys av rapporteringen kring Emma Green Tregaros protest under friidrotts-VM i Moskva 2013.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Several discussions rose in western media when Swedish high-jumper Emma Green Tregaro competed with her nails painted in the colors of the rainbow during the athletic world championship in Moscow, in August 2013. This was meant to show her support for the gay movement, but was viewed as a protest against the new Russian law which forbids gay propaganda.

Western media critizised Russian media for failing to report the incident to their readers and that is where we got interested in making this research. We got the idea of comparing a Swedish newspaper with a Russian one, to observe differences in how they chose to report the event.

Due to lack of knowledge of the Russian language and the kyrillic alphabet we had to turn to an English-speaking newspaper based in Russia: The Moscow Times.  We compared the Moscow Times with the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter, to see their differences in terms of: How they chose to cover the event, from a gender perspective; what structures of power can be found, how Emma Green Tregaro and Yelena Isinbayeva are portrayed and what meaning the protest is given by the narrators.

We achieved our results through narrative analysis, a qualitative method. We applied theories such as gender theory and media logic in order to obtain answers to our questions.

We came to the conclusion that there are great differences in how much attention the protest achieved in the two newspapers. From the Swedish perspective, more focus were put on Emma Green Tregaro where she is a brave messenger of love, while in the Russian, more emphasis lays on Yelena Isinbayeva as a defender of the Russian stance. While Dagens Nyheter has put resources into sending journalists to Moscow, The Moscow Times has used a lot of material from news bureaus such as Reuters and The Associated Press instead of covering the event themselves.

Another interesting fact is that the institutions presented in the news flow such as the IAAF, IOC and the Swedish Sports Confederation are only represented by men, and through the power structural dimension of gender theory we can see tendencies of control or influence over the female sports profiles’ actions.

Kvinnorna i flyktingkrisen: En kritisk diskursanalys om hur svenska kvällstidningar framställer kvinnor på flykt2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to examine how the Swedish tabloid press represent women refugees in the news coverage of the european refugee crisis.

The main question was: How are women refugees represented in the tabloid press news stories about the refugee crisis?

To approach our question we used a critical discourse analysis. We examined a total of 17 news stories published during the first two weeks in September 2015, all of them published in Aftonbladet, Expressen, GT or Kvällsposten.

During the analysis a total of four discursive themes emerged: The strong refugee woman, the weak refugee woman, the invisible refugee woman and the refugee woman as a mother figure.

Three of our themes – the weak refugee woman, the invisible refugee woman and the refugee woman as a mother figure – are examples of how old ideologies about refugees and women still are present in the Swedish evening papers of today. These constructions  are based on myths and historical stereotypes.

Even though the refugee woman commonly are described as weak, subordinated and inactive, she can also be described as strong and independent – the strong refugee woman. This, the fourth theme, differs from the traditional stereotypes.

Rop på hjälp, hyllningar och självpresentation: en komparativ undersökning om gestaltningen av relationer på sociala medier2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The time we live in now is significant for its many ways of spreading information- it is indeed the era of communication. The Internet is the main reason for this evolution, where you can reach out to any corner in the world in less then a second. Information is flowing over us and we get more and more used to being in a constant accessible state. The individual might spread his own word as he wishes. From a democratic point of view this should give a great opening for everyone into the public spheer. But is there a backside of this? The changes are as fast as the information is flowing, both at a level of the state and individually. The shaping of a stable identity begins with the stable points of trust, but can we trust something that is changing all the time?

This paper lays its focus on this digital communication and interaction from a sociological view.

    Abstract [en]

A qualitative interview study aimed at investigating the role of training images for people and the needs of Instagram users. The study focuses on the Actic gym in Kalmar, which is a relatively unexplored area. The questions that the study asks are; What does Instagram mean for media users at Actic? What results of workout does skilled Instagram users experience on Actic? Is there any visible difference between the sexes that practice at Actic and their experience of exercise pictures at Instagram?

Semi-structured interviews have been made with eight people age 18-24, as this is the age group that is most active on Instagram. The interviews were transcribed and resulted in a discussion that we lean against the Uses and Gratifications theory and the social comparison theory. The result shows a number of needs that users are considered to need to fill and the perception of training-influenced images that are both positive and negative. The needs are such as inspiration and motivation as well as the help that may be needed to go to the gym.

    Abstract [en]

After a longer period of abscense due to sickness, the leader of the Swedish Democrats (SD) announced his return to his political mission in a the popular talkshow “Skavlan” which airs in the Swedish public television. The news leaked out before the show was aired and caused a mayor debate among journalists in massmedia and among the public about the legitimacy of the interview. After the transmission the debate continued and was fueled by the fact that a massive amount of complaints were made to the review board by citizens claiming that the interview was bias and not objective enough.

This study analyses a number of columns written by journalists that reason about the event. Our aim was to get a better understanding of how they view themselves in relation to their audience, this by using argument analysis. We found that they dipslay signs of the “third person effect” which means they view “the others” (the viewers) as more impressionable to masscommunications with messages they perceive as harmfull. Our conclusion is that the columns can be seen as a result of this, an attempt to warn the public about a harmfull message. Connecting this to the agenda setting theory this paradoxically leads to more attention and publicity for a politician whos opinions they try to counteract.

The portrayals of women in lifestyle magazines has been a continuous subject in genderresearch, but have mainly been focused on research about heterosexual women. However, how women are being portrayed through editorial content in an LGBT magazines have shown to be a gap in gender research.

The purpose of this study was to find out how female identities were portrayed in theeditorial content in the LGBT magazine QX — Sweden’s largest magazine aimed atmembers of the LGBT community in Sweden.

The analysis of the material was conducted through a semiotic and a narrative analysis. Patterns and reoccurring themes were selected, and furthermore were analysed againstfeminist theories and views such as queer theory, radical feminism and post-modernfeminism.

Four different gender archetypes derived from the result of the study: The strongfemale, The passive female, The stereotypical female, and The intimate female. Thestudy did show that women featured in QX magazine were portrayed throughheteronormative patterns, although the magazine represents a larger alternative group.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative case study of young womens’ experiences of blogging about One Direction on the social media/microblogging platform Tumblr. The aim of this study was to find out what fan blogging is and why fans blog. We did this by creating an account on Tumblr where we invited young women between the ages of 16–29, who had active fan blogs dedicated to One Direction, to answer an open-ended questionnaire. With the help of the uses and gratifications approach we analyzed their answers of what they blog about, if they perceived their blogs as personal, how they chose their content, and what reasons they had for blogging. We found that the motivations for fan blogging were largely the same as previous studies have found for blogging in general, but the tools used to study blogging have become out-of-date. The categorization of blogging as either personal journaling or filter blogging does not take into consideration the larger spectrum of blogging practices that has evolved when different mediums and platforms converge, such as fan blogging on Tumblr.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how news reporting about crime is affected by gender discourses. We also examined differences and similarities between the tabloids and the morning newspapers. We did this by observing how the perpetrator's gender affects how both Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter constructs participants in crimes where parents commit murder against their children. In regards to participants, we mean the perpetrator, the victim and the relationship between the parents and the children.

The study answered the following questions: How do gender discourses affect news reporting about violent crimes? How are participants portrayed in crimes where parents commit murder against children in Swedish investigative journalism? How is the relationship between the children and the parents portrayed? What are the differences and similarities between the news reporting in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter?

For this study, we used a critical discourse analysis as a method of examination and nine articles from Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter were examined. The result shows that male perpetrators were portrayed as aggressive and threatful, especially in Aftonbladet. Female perpetrators were blamed more often for the crime when they broke the norms of what is generally considered as typical female roles and qualities before they commited the crime. The relationship between the victim and the perpetrator was discussed more in the articles in regards to the female compared to the male. However, the qualities of the victims were more described in the articles about the male perpetrators. That can be explained by the crimes which were commited by a female who broke the norms. Therefore, there was a need to explain her actions.

In this study the aim was to investigate the area of non-celebrity people with a popular Instagram account, and indentify their motives to being active on Instagram, whether or not they maintained an online image and what consequences they could see as results of Instagram activity. Through six interviews with women between 17 and 28 years of age, the results showed the following patterns. The identified motives to Instagram use matched Whiting and Williams (2013) ten ways to apply Uses and Gratificatios Theory, and also identified three new ones: professional use, friendship and validation of oneself. Use of an online image was confirmed, as the interviewees stated how constructed to show ones best sides an Instagram account usually is, both theirs and others. Consequences and effects as result of Instagram use was stated to be both positive and negative, positive as inspiration, affirmation and easing contact with friends. Negative effects such as envy, comparisons, anxiety, a normalised view of unhealthy bodies, and the risk of addiction to Instagram use was noted.

    Abstract [en]

The paper aims to examine the relationship between the media's portrayal of the refugee situation in Sweden to investigate whether this could be a contributing factor to a widespread threat society, characterized by fear. Primary theories used is Simmel’s Stranger, Said’s Orientalism, Nohrstedt’s Threat society, framing theory and the media logic in news. Four morning newspapers, with geographic coverage in Sweden, have been used for the quantitative methods to collect empirical data. During the past year, we have analyzed a total of four weeks evenly distributed over the year, starting in May 2015 and end in February 2016. A total of 424 articles are coded on the basis of 21 variables. The result shows that the refugee's descent rarely appears in the articles. The geographical space also reveals that exile nationality rarely occur if the refugee is in Sweden. Furthermore, the result indicates a framing of the refugee as a burden/threat, in more cases than as victim/necessitous. When the refugee is portrayed as a burden the temporal charge is many times urgent. Many article types allows the writer to express their own opinion, as with the rhetorical tools can affect the receiver. Articles says, both implicitly and explicitly, that the Government of Sweden and all municipalities in the country are responsible regarding to the refugee issue. The topics that are high on the news agenda is the reception of refugees and asylum accommodation. These results are in line with the theory of a threat society as the refugee becomes anonymous, described as a stranger and perceived as a burden on society.

Media and Information Literacy as A Tool to Prevent Hate Propaganda Transmitted through Traditional and Social Media: Lessons From the Arab World2017In: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Media Literacy : Research and Practices: 媒介素养的跨学科研究与实践 / [ed] Alice Y. L. Lee, Zhang Kai, Kara Chan, Communication University of China Press , 2017, p. 74-88Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article argues that media and information education should be viewed more broadly than in the one school setting. While in some countries experiencing a chaotic political transition, users of social networks make increasingly their voice heard on current events, there is no media and information literacy to frame this new phenomenon of virtual floor jack. In these conditions, it is not uncommon that they peddle hatred and disinformation messages, making them a threat to peace and security. The case of countries concerned by the "Arab Spring" perfectly illustrates this trend, even if, as in Tunisia, for example, alternatives are gradually set up outside the education system to promote the missing professionalism, responsibility and basic ethical principles.

    Abstract [fr]

The First World War and its Consequences on the European Colonial Territories of Africa: Between Permanences and Ruptures2018In: Europe a Century after the End of the First World War (1918-2018) / [ed] Horga Ioan & Stoica Alina, Bucarest: Editura Academiei Române (Romanian Academy Publishing) , 2018, p. 75-87Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The colonial territories of European powers on the African continent were forced to participate in the war effort between 1914 and 1918. A large number of men were thus sent to Europe to fight alongside European soldiers, or then to serve as workers to replace the Frenchmen or the Englishmen sent to fight their common ennemy... The mobilization and participation in the fighting of the non-European populations did not only have the effect of reinforcing the military power of the colonial powers. More insidiously, they were an opportunity for combatants to become aware of their singularity as non-citizens mobilized in defense of a cause that was not theirs. Slowly but surely a feeling of unease has developed because of the existing gap between the war effort demanded of the colonized and the little gratitude expressed in return by the European colonial empires. In the inter-war period, this will, on the first hand, feed the ideas of emancipation and, on the second hand, of independence... To account for this slow but inescapable erosion of European domination in the colonial territories, this article proposes to see to what extent the rise of the written press, in the hands of Africans, can usefully illustrate both the emancipation of the natives and the rise of political demands, that will eventually spell the end of any European claim to continue to rule the world.
