    Abstract [en]

    The sawmill business is today characterized in general by small profit margins depending on reduced timber prices and high raw material prices. The companies have to increase their productivity to be competitive. One way to accomplish that is to enhance the use of the raw material. The reason of sawmills need of better measuring- and sorting equipment is the possibility to directly affect the profitability through making it possible to gain a higher utilization of the raw material. This result in a need for good sorting systems. The sorting system is today based on different measurement equipments and different methods to estimate bark thickness. The equipment and methods for measurement of logs has evolved during a long period of time but it is still not flawless ore uncorrectable. There are still problems to solve and methods to evolve when it comes to timber sorting, which led to the aim of the thesis, which has been to develop a model for improvements of an existing timber sorting system. A large workload has been put on exploring the problem with the bark measurement for the sorting and a constant goal for the thesis has been to improve the existing sorting methods with consideration of the utilization of the raw material. The result of the thesis is a statistical model for improving the sorting system with consideration of bark estimation, correction of diameter, and measurement equipment, which is estimated to be usable in sawmill industry with similar technical equipment as the subject company. A better sorting means an improvement of the productivity through increased use of the raw material, fewer set-ups and fewer stoppages caused by machine failure.

    Abstract [en]

    Many managers are unaware of what inventory is costsing them. It is estimated that in total it costs a minimum of 25 percent annually of the booked value just to hold it. Another important inventory related cost is the cost arising when there is a shortage of a required spare part. When studying the theory in this field it is found that most of the literature describes optimixatin of order quantity and order intervals, classification and risk assessment of spare parts individually. Another important aspect to consider in this area is the organizational settings. In the thesis a method desribing how spare parts could be considered when purchasing mechanical equipment is developed from theory and empirical findings and then applied in a case study and furter improved. The method desribes how the above mentioned areas could be co-ordinated to achieve highest possible availablity ot the machinery to the minimum lifetime cosst. The validation is made by discussions with production, maintenance and incentory management. When performing the case study it was found that using the method resulted in identification of critical spare parts, optimization of stock-keeping levels, identification of alternative stock-keeping possibilities and mapping of the organizational settings regarding spare parts when purchasing mechanical equipment.

    Abstract [en]

    Two different woods were examined, pine and spruce, from Småland, Sweden. Pine was sorted in heartwood and sapwood whilst spruce was sorted in standing or laying anuual rings. The permeability laboratory test eas done according to the standard SS-EN 927-5:2000. The values were entered in the minutes and diagrams established over the percentage water permeability. The sapwood pf pine had the higher permeability; it culminated at 32% after 96 hours. The heartwood of pine had lower permeability; it culminated at 15%. With spruce there were little difference between laying and standing annual rings. The laying annual rings had somewhat more permeability than the standing ones; they culminated at 14% after 96 hours. Standing annual rings culminated at 13%. No relation could be found between density, annual ring width and permeability in both woods.

    Abstract [en]

    Nowadays it´s not only the price on a product or service, that has a meaning, but also deliverytime, quality and so on. If the company is competetive depends largely on how good one is on making purchases. One also have to think of that some contractors is more important than others, seen from purchased volume and cost price. The company must therefore have survey of all their contractors and of and of how one can work active with the most important contractors. It´s this this that is called a companys contractorstrategy. To take out the most important contractors one can classify them. One way to do that is according to the Kraljicmatrix. In this matrix one look at the importance of the purchase and the contractormarkets complexity. This gives totaly four divided groups. For every group there should be basic strategies worked out. When one should make a choice of strategy, then one should look at what one want to achieve on the long view. In the short view it´s hard to change traditions, habits, businessconnections and personal relations.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of the study was to examine if there is a difference in grain angle under the bark when comparing edge trees with stand trees. It is also discussed in the report how the grain angle is affected by the tree’s age, height, diameter, ovality, live crown base and first dead knot difference. The investigated study was made in eight stands of spruce (Picea abies). Four stands are located in Attsjö, 20 kilometers east of Växjö, and four stands in Toftaholm, 20 kilometers north of Ljungby.

    I am, communication, in Växjö, has assigned a task to develop a room divider in shape of a detachable screen wall, that reaches from the floor to the ceiling. The main demands for the product were that it may not damage the existing interior and it shall be simple to produce. This project has proceeded according to professor Freddy Olsson's Product development strategy. Different product proposals have been compared and finally the best alternative in each group proceeded to construction. Analytical and computerized calculations have been made to control the strength of the product's different parts. The choices of standard components are based on the calculations, which had been made. The screen wall is based on modules and can therefore be assembled to the user's wishes and needs

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesisi is to develop a solution for an integrated engine completion line for bus- and truck engines. When engines are delivered from the manufacturer to the chassis workshop, a number of articles must be fitted onto the engines before they can be assembled int the chassis. Today, this completion is done on two separate lines when truck engines follow a continuous flow with a particular tact-time, while the bus engines are completed on individual tables with no specified tact-time. According to the principles of the Scania Production System, all products shold be manufactured in an even, continuous and balanced flow with a certain tact-time. Today, the bus completion line does not live up to this principle and the consequence is an ineefficient production with unnecessary shortcomings in quality. Furthermore, poor use of the workshop area is another disadvantage of the present layout. The two separate completion lines take up excess floor space, which could be used for other purposes. Through practical work on the existing completion lines interviews with concerned employees evaluated and compared to the existing layout. Consequences and possibilities with the ney layout are discussed in the report. The given suggestion is not completely according to the Scania principles since completion on the bus engines will be carried out on a separate table after the integrated line. This divergence is justified by technical literature, where it si said that if the toal work content differs by more than 30% the products should not be assembled in the same flow since productivity is likely to decrease. By focusing on continued improvements in the completion process and design changes, we believe that the separate table can eventually by phased out.

    This diplomawork is completed at Electrolux Laundry Systems AB were the assigment was to unbiassed investigate the possibility to develop the material handling equipment at the 1000-ton press. The intention was to find an equipment who could replace the manual work which the equipment demands today. By studing the existing equipment a new solution could be published. Different solution was exposed where a simple transfeeder was selected. It was the simple konstruction and ergonomics which did the choice to select this type of equipment. Several suppliers was asked to submit an offer to the solution. Electrolux Laundry Systems AB are working on with my example of an solution and will recive the offer.

    Abstract [en]

    Lammhults Snickeri AB have recently bought a new wide belt sandler. The purpose of this examination has been finding equipment for material handling around this machine. Solutions to an existing wide belt sandler have also been studied. This means that this work have to deal about material handling around two machines. Details through the existing machine the first quarter of 2003 have been studied. It seems probably that the same material flow is representative for the rest of the year. The existing way of production has been studied, Discussions with the personnel have made clear problems with the material handling. The placement of the machines have been studied by support of the companies CAD programme. This is the base of the layout for the equipment. Equipment and machines from suppliers have been studied. An account of capacities and technical information, as well as prices has been stablished. Teh results show two different ways to solve the material handling around the machines. this report presents five different suggestions. Two of them for the new machine, and three for the existing wide belt sandler. The two suggestions for the new wide belt sandler include an investment into two lifting tables (förslag 2). A panel turner and a roller conveyor are parts of another suggestion (förslag 1).
