Metodimplementering i socialt arbete: - Med Aggression Replacement Training (ART) som exempel2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand ART – instructors experience of possibilities and obsticals surrounding the implementation of a method in residential care unit. The method is spread nationwide and therefore it is of great importance to examine how the method is implemented since it has been nationally efforts made to raise the quality of practical social work. The study has a qualitative approach interviewing seven Aggression Replacement Training instructors at a national board of institutional institution. The result was analyzed using Evert Vedung´s implementation theory. We found that the ART – instructors themselves had a positive approach using the method and associated manual. The enabling factors also consisted that the ART – instructors felt that the ART – master and the director of the institution was supportive. The inhibiting factors during the implementation was the ART – instructors experience of that the remaining staff did not have sufficient interest or knowledge regarding the method and that they felt indistinctness concerning who was responsible for the actually implementation. The results also showed that all ART – instructors felt that it was a lack of time consisting for planning before ART lessons and documenting afterwards, and lack of time to teach the method to other staff. These inhibiting factors may contribute to a delayed implementation, which can result in that individuals who have been adopted to benefit from the operation will suffer. We found that the Art – instructors experienced that there was no following up on the implementation of the method in the departments of the institution respectively.

Handledaren som en guru: En kvalitativ studie om de handleddas upplevelse av handledare inom socialt arbete2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore refugees experiences of an introduction program in a small Swedish municipality. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with six refugees and was conducted to explore how the introduction program contributed or has not contributed to feelings of being integrated. Our informants have got different backgrounds but have all been forced to flee their home country to Sweden. The interview data was interpreted through earlier research, theories about social exclusion and concepts which were relevant for our study. Our study showed that the informants felt kindly received in the small municipality. The informants emphasizes the small village where segregation among Swedes and refugees was less of a problem. The different parts of the introduction program was of importance, according to the informants, but they also stressed that the introduction program, in itself, isn’t enough to become integrated in the Swedish country. The informants explained that the individual person must take responsibility for its own integration beside taking part of the introduction program. The study showed that the most difficult problems occur when the introduction program is ended and the time to find “established” employment has come.

    Abstract

Children with neuropsychiatric disorders often require special arrangements from the society. These measures could target the child itself, its parents, or other parts of the social network surrounding the child. Parents of children with neuropsychiatric disorders are often deeply engaged both in their child and in these measures.

Three parents of children with neuropsychiatric disorders, and four counselors in different habilitation centers, were interviewed. The purpose of this qualitative interview study was to describe the methods with which the counselors worked to support parents of children with neuropsychiatric disorders, and to understand how the parents experienced this support offered by the counselors.

The qualitative interviews with counselors and parents followed a thematic interview guide. A structured interview form was used. The frame of questions was: what support and which help parents feel that counselors offered them? How do the parents experience the help? How do counselors describe their jobs and their work situation? How are counselors with their mission to make its work easier? What impact wills the parents? Factors that the parents experienced as very important were to get information about the availability of support and possible arrangements, information about their child's neuropsychiatric disorder after diagnose, better communication and better coordination. The study also showed that parents felt that the counselors were humble and nice. Others found in the study was that parents felt forgotten and requested that the counselors were more "active". It turned out that the parents wanted to be confirmed and get feedback. The study also shows that the counselors feel that parents may help, and that they felt controlled by habilitations plans. The conclusions in my study shows that the reason that parents feel that they cannot get help and support and those counselors believe that parents can get help and support, due counselors action space. That is to say that they are loyal to their "organization" and unable to meet parents ' needs to the extent that they want. Partly it is because a good communication is not satisfied with his parents from the beginning. Which is connected with the counselors does not see "critical" on its business.

Barns upplevelser av att leva i en familj med knappa ekonomiska resurser: en litteraturstudie2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine what previous research says about children’s experiences living in a low-income family. Its aim was to found out what children themselves say about their life living in a low-income family and what consequences, practical and emotional, low-income environment has on children. More specifically our aim was to find out how children themselves experienced their situation compared with their peer’s economical situation. We also wanted to see if there were any differences between what younger and older children say about their situation. Furthermore, we wanted to find out what meaning they added to “normality” and how they related to that phenomenon. The study was based on reviews of nine qualitative studies from Sweden, England, North Ireland and USA – all published between 1998 and 2011, focusing on children and their experiences of poverty. Five themes were identified that seemed to be important for children’s experiences: life circumstances, relationships, children as actors, school and future. The analysis was based on perspective of normality, focusing how impoverished life circumstances put children in a category which deviates from majority of society. Main results demonstrate that there are big differences in how younger and older children experience their situation where older children showed more discontent and the younger children seemed more satisfied about their situation. Overall the children appear as actors which have not given up hope to change and impact their situation – there was a major will to fit in and be like other peers. As a positive aspect the study shows that relationships seemed very important for these children where friends seemed to be a good support and the family ties were strong.

    Abstract [en]

The thesis aims to study how rainbows families are being treated by the authorities and the surroundings. It focuses on how homosexual parents are met in society. Although, homosexuals have the legal right to have a family and enter into marriage, the social norms are still far behind and rainbows families are seen as “the others” and abnormal.  Earlier researches have been studding how the authorities still assumes that every family are living in a heterosexual family constellation. By this assumption they exclude families who are not living in a heterosexual family. To find out what kind of experiences the homosexual parents have we have interviewed eight homosexual parents. Which four were females and four were males. The result of this thesis shows that most of the homosexual parents are not experience that they are treated bad or in any other way different then heterosexual parents. It also shows that people in the nearest surroundings to the homosexual family are really glad that the gay couple have a family. At the same time the homosexual parents are saying that there will always be people who think it’s abnormal. But as long as the nearest families and friends find it alright they are not paying too much energy of those who thinks it’s wrong. The majority of gay males explain that the hardest part in building a family is that they are males; it’s harder to be accepted as two fathers. One conclusion is not that homosexuals are being treated different; it’s more a question of gender. Especially when the children are young, a lot of males feels that the always have to state themselves, not as a gay parents but as two males who is having infants.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to understand how roman children and young people’s relations are to school and education from a family point of view.

I have used a qualitative method and by means of that studied different information sources.

I have proceeded from two different theories: culture conception and categorizing. My first theory choice - Culture conception - represents a value of how we see the culture and the prospective of it.

My second theory choice – categorizing – represents that we humans classify consciously or unconscious ourselves and others into categories, with the consequence that we understand the world by categorizing.

Question I have proceeded from are: - Which roll does the family has for children and young persons from roman society? - Which expectations do children and young persons from roman society have from the family when it comes to education?

Throughout my study I have come to the conclusion that roman culture looks differently upon boys and girls. Boys should learn how to get an income to the family. When it comes to the girls they should learn how to take care of a household to be a good wife. However it appeared that children and young persons from roman society want to go to school and get an education. This is ok for their parents and a relative as long as it doesn’t interfere with family’s doing.

    Abstract [en]

The intention of this study was to examine the interaction between authorities. More specifically it had a purpose to look at the ongoing cooperation between social workers and staff of special homes of closed institutional youth care. The sanction system for young offenders’ reform of 1999 where young people between the ages of 15-17 who have committed serious crimes, can be sentenced to secure institutional treatment instead of prison, aims to counteract the harm which can result from a stay in prison. The social welfare board in the young person´s local authority and the national board of institutional care shall cooperate during the youth’s placement at the special home of closed institutional youth care. This study was based on eight qualitative interviews with social workers chosen randomly from all over Sweden and staff members from different special homes of closed institutional youth care. To interpret the material we have been using theory of collaboration and cooperation of Danermark and Kullberg. We have also used earlier studies within the area. The study has resulted that the social welfare board are more satisfied with the corporation than the national board of institutional care are. The study also shows that there has been an improvement. Significant reasons for this result has proved to be; the two different employers with different mission statement who are cooperating, unclear guidelines and the lack of knowledge within in the social services. Today there’s an ongoing cooperation that needs to be developed.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study with a hermeneutic and partially inductive approach. The study’s purpose is to enhance the understanding of young adults experiences of unemployment and the importance of being employed. In this study, eight young adults participate in the project Framtid Kronoberg. The youths are 19-25 years of age. A coach from the project was also involved and gave us his view of the project, its goals and objectives.

Through all the interviewees statements regarding unemployment, it was confirmed that work has a significant impact on the identity of the elaboration and socialization. Knowing the community, to be useful to society and to earn their own money, are some of the important factors that can be accomplished by a employment. Young people experience work and activities as positive and developing. Being unemployed affects how individuals perceive themselves and their living situations. Young people who fall outside of the labor market has found difficulties to reengage themselves into work and society, and thus risking a life of alienation with bad economy and poor living conditions as a result.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how school personnel describe and interpret the phenomenon bullying among girls, and also what their interpretations are based upon. More specifically its aim was to find out what characterizes and causes girl-to-girl bullying, according to school welfare officers and teachers. We wanted to find out how school personnel look upon aggression among girls and social expectations on girls behavior. The analysis was based on two kinds of perspectives: one focusing on gender and one focusing on power in relationships. Research shows that girl-to-girl bullying is hard to observe and that this problem has been invisible in earlier studies. We thought that this phenomenon needs to be brought up and that is one of the reasons why we wanted to examine this subject. This study was based on qualitative interviews with school welfare officers and teachers. A main theme in our study is that our respondents describe girl-to-girl bullying as subtle and quiet. We also found that some of our respondents disagreed on this statement. Their opinions were mainly based on their own experience from working in a school environment. As a conclusion we found out that factors such as social maturity and gender roles can be used as explanations on the phenomenon girl-to-girl bullying. We found out that our tools, power and gender theories, could not fully explain why girls bully in a certain way and how school personnel interpret the phenomenon. More knowledge is needed to understand more about girl-to-girl bullying.

Ungdomars mognad, en avgörande faktor: en kvalitativ studie inriktad på en grupp föräldrar gällande tillhandahållande av alkohol till sina barn2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Our purpose was to shed light on how parents act in respect of providing alcohol to young people when they ask for a taste of home, or wish to bring alcohol to such a party. We used qualitative interviews and the results show that some of the respondents think that it may be acceptable to provide alcohol, while some do not. The results also show that the respondents think that parents are important as a model for the young. They could not purchase alcohol for the purpose of giving it to the young but only if alcohol is available at home. The reason for this behavior is the parents' assessment that the young person demonstrates a level of maturity for his age that they are presumed to be able to handle a small amount of alcohol. The conclusion is that the most important thing is that as a parent as a beacon to the young. In order to live up to being a role model for young need greater knowledge of what is written in the Alcohol Act (2010:1622) concerning minimum age for possession and use of alcohol.

    Abstract [en]

Stress is something that has increased in recent decades among adolescents. Several reports indicate that young people today are more stressed because of the many demands they wear. They should be good in school, achievement expectations, get an education or job, make choices and think about their future. The purpose of our essay is that we want to explore and gain an understanding of how young people in the third grade in high school looks to stress. To conduct this study, we used a qualitative approach, by doing interviews with 10 high school students attending third grade at Västerviks gymnasium. The result we got out of the interviews was that young people experience stress differently, depending on their different as individuals. We found that there are different causes of stress, such as school, media, friends, demands from various quarters and choosing education.

The interviews showed that some kind of stress was possible to handle for the adolescents, for instance by making schedule. Some stress from society was, on the other hand, more difficult to avoid.

    Abstract [en]

This article presents the results of an archive study of working time development inSweden. It investigates how structural policy change is moving from a social discourse closely related to Swedish welfare reforms, towards an economic discourse motivated by financial arguments. By doing so, the political measures to solve working time related problems in today’s flexible working life appear to be contradictory. On one side we find time-poor people on the labour market mainly supported by tax-reductions and private time saving solutions. On the other side we find time-rich people mainly supported by activation programs and/or welfare benefits. This is a system and a policy strategy that obviously disregards the other side of the coin.

Time-rich and time-poor living conditions: Balancing time and income in everyday life2010In: Proceedings of the Sustaining  Everyday Life Conference: April 22–24 2009, Campus Norrköping, Sweden / [ed] Kristina Karlsson & Kajsa Ellegård, Linköping University Electronic Press, 2010, Vol. 38, no 28, p. 171-182Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on the division of work and private life in a Swedish community. An interview study sheds some light on the diversity of time frames experienced by people living inside and outside the labour market. It examines in which way this duality is paving the way for new patterns of inequality. The purpose is to explore the living conditions of two groups in society: the time-poor who are established in the labour force that experience great demands on their efficiency and educational level and the time-rich who do not have a natural place in the labour market. People experience an unbalanced division of time and resources not only in work situations but also in everyday life in the home and in leisure time. The time-rich can experience having small margins partly due to a lack of social networks and social recognition, while the time-poor experience it due to multiple and unwieldy social roles in and outside labour market. Society has tried to cope with these two different problems in completely different ways, although both problems are related to income, one through salaried work and the other through income support. The results do not only exhibit the polarizing tendencies in terms of time and income. There are also similar differences concerning social participation. Time-rich people have a hard time finding alternative social networks outside the labour market. At the same time, many life course changes that require both a lot of time and a lot of money occur in time-poor living conditions. A restriction analyses, inspired by the time geographical approach, shows a diversity of time patterns and timespace restrictions between different life forms in everyday life. When the individuals’ whole life situation is taken into consideration, the diversity of time patterns creates restrictions that oppose strategies for work/life balance in everyday life.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Studies show that 10-15 percent of Sweden's population, 65 years or older are estimated to have depression or depression symptoms. The symptoms of depression among elderly people are less than symptoms of young people. This could cause that elderly people with depression are not always discovered. Studies show that elderly people who live in residential homes show more signs of depression than elderly people living at home. If elderly people live in a supporting environment, can it prevent that a depression developed.

The prevention of depression among elderly people is a topic that is not discussed among previously research. The purpose of this study is to examine how the unit managers of the residential homes for elderly people look at the prevention of depression. This study is qualitative where six unit managers in charge of residential homes have been interviewed. The interviews were based on different themes; how the unit managers approach the prevention of depression among elderly people and how they describe the discretion to take preventive treatment for depression among elderly people, also the unit manager views on elderly peoples depression. The study is made in a small number of municipalities which means that it can not be generalized. The result may not be the same if the study had been made on a larger scale.

The results of the study show that the unit managers of the residential homes for elderly people work to prevent depression in different ways. An explanation of why the unit managers works different are based on the unit manager ideas and interpretations of depression among elderly people. Also the unit manager priorities, past experience, number of years as a professional and their views about elderly people’s depression are factors that affect the unit manager work. The unit manager views on its way to approach the prevention of depression, the political guidelines and decisions have impact on the way the unit manager work to prevent depression among elderly people in the residential home.

    Abstract [en]

Sweden has an obligation to report child abuse suspicions to Social Services. According to Socialtjänstlagen (swedish constitution) 1 § Chapter 14, all employees in agencies affecting children, such as schools, have a responsibility to report their suspicions. Research shows that many abuses are not reported. The consequence of this is that Social Services does not hear about all cases of abused and harmed children. One profession where reporting is mandated is school counselors. The school counselor has a particular status in the educational community and meets many maltreated children, and children who injure themselves through their own behavior. The purpose of our study was to describe the circumstances that school counselors believe may affect their tendency to report. Using qualitative methods, we had eight interviews with school counselors from different municipalities who work with students of different ages, and who have different experiences within their profession. The result was related to the theoretical frames of the written composition by Stephen Webb’s (2006), The Rationality of Regulation and the Sociological Concepts of Formal and Informal Social Controls (Israel, 1968). Our study shows that all school counselors knew that a report had to be submitted even at the slightest suspicion, although several of them said that they in some cases avoided to report. The reasons for this, which all according to our interpretation means that the regulation and the social control of maltreated children does not always work, could have to do with the cooperation and response from the social services, or that they assumed that the involvement with the social services would not benefit the child. It could also be that the student’s situation was not serious enough to report, or that they wanted more information about the situation before reporting. Another reason could be that they assumed that there are better ways to sort out the students’ concerns within the school or other agencies, especially if it regards an older student. The study also shows that the school counselors felt there was a risk in losing the students trust when reporting their suspicions.

    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this study is to investigate how social workers who are dealing with financial assistance are experiencing discretion in their daily work. The aim of the study is also to examine how social workers who are dealing with financial assistance relates to the controlling and the supporting functions of their daily work and how this in turn affects the attitude to the client. In order to examine the aim of the study, qualitative method was used. Eight social workers have been interviewed and presented with two fictitious cases that they have been able to discuss. Theories regarding the street-level bureaucrat and its discretion have been used to interpret and understand the collected material. Kerstin Svenssons’ (2001) theory regarding the social worker’s position has also been used to analyse the study’s gathered material. The study shows that social workers consider themselves to have a relatively large discretion in their daily work. However, the majority of the social workers agree that despite the great discretion they can at times feel limited in their work. Findings of the study also show that social workers are either more controlling or more supportive in meeting with the client.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is an evaluation of the act of establishment (2010:197). The act is about different operators' responsibility and accountability for new arrivals to get a more effective integration into society and to speed up the new arrivals' establishment on the labor market. The purpose of this act is to get more new arrivals involved in the Swedish labor market directly. By doing so, it gives these people a possibility to become self-sufficient. This study has focus in four different operators; Employment service, Immigration service and two local politicians from Social democrats (Socialdemokraterna) and Conservatives (Moderaterna). This evaluation analyses if the act's goal has been reached according to the operator's estimations. To find out the operator's opinions qualitative data collection method in the form of interviews has been used. The collected material from the different operators has been analyzed through both top down - bottom up theory but also to a target evaluation model. In the final discussion the writers are going to discuss their own thoughts and opinions about the result and analysis. In the result it becomes clear that the act’s not fulfilled. The different operators have a different point of views to look at the act and its problematic areas. In the final discussion we have come with suggestions what can be done to reduce or minimize the problems and dilemma that’s takes place in the act and in the working field. During the study the results shows that the hierarchy system and the bad communication between the different operators makes the work more difficult and ineffective.

    Abstract [en]

Title: “Am I being me? Or am I being a girl with Asperger´s?” A qualitative study of the role relationships have for young women with Asperger´s syndrome identity [Translated title]

    Supervisor: Melker Labory

    Assessor: Ulf Drugge

During adolescence, relationships are important for young people and studies show that having a partner is something that becomes more important, especially for young women. Creating and maintaining good relationships can be problematic, but can this problem be different for a young woman with a neuropsychiatric disability as Aspergers syndrome? A person with Aspergers syndrome often has difficulties with communication and interaction with other people. But the syndrome is also characterized with special interests, different language management and difficulties with sudden changes. The aim of our study was to examine how young women with Aspergers syndrome experience the creation, maintenance or absence of couple relations. Furthermore, we wanted to see the significance these relationships have in the young women´s identity and how they are, based on their disability, managing any problems that may arise with this meaning. In our qualitative study we have followed three young women with Aspergers syndrome through their blogs, individual websites where they write down their thoughts and experience in the form of digital diaries. These three women are seen as three extremes: a young woman with a relationship, a young woman who is single but looking for love and a young woman who is single but not interested in being part of a relationship. Through a content analysis of their texts, we have been able to distinguish experiences, significance and managing. The data that we have collected, did we analyzed to three different theories: intersectionality, Svedberg´s ideas about group processes and symbolic interactionism. The experiences have permeated the whole analysis and what we can see after the completion of the study is that relationships are very important for the three young women. All three women write about thoughts and experiences related to couple relations in their blogs. By using Svedberg, we have come to the conclusion that relationships can be more or less important for the young women. Depending on their experience and whether the desire for a partner is a part of their inner world or not. How this picture is consistent with the external reality is in turn crucial to the creation of an identity, can the young woman´s desire get consistent with reality? And what happens when this connection does not exist? When we have read the blogs, we have seen examples of how the young women both choose to grab on to the idea of a partner or choose to be alone to maintain their identity. The meaning of the couple relations variates between the young women and the way they choose to handle the problems that follows with it. Furthermore, there are variations in both experiences, significance and managing and this can be understood from the extremes but also in terms of their personality, previous experience and the fact that they are divided into different groups in the society.

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on a qualitative study with 8 semi-structured interviews. The aim of the

study was to describe how social workers in the individual- and family section in social

services in two different municipalities in Sweden reason about reporting obligations and to

understand what lex Sarah means in the decisions making to report incongruity or not. We

interviewed social workers that work in the department of individual- and family section, a

municipality worker who works with state governance with all kinds people in the society.

We asked the social workers altered questions about how they handle lex Sarah in their work.

Three different topics were identified in our study and became the themes: Description,

management and conflicting thoughts. Our analysis is based on two different theories, one

about the choices a person make being in an organization, the other about how a professional

individual have altered pressures to handle in their everyday work. By doing a semi-structured

study of the social workers opinions, we found out that the description of incongruity was not

the focus just in managing lex Sarah. Results of the study showed that there is several

different aspects to take in considerations when social workers in individual- and family

section in social services decide whether to report or not. The description is one part and their

own individual worries affected them in their decision to report incongruity or not. They all

had faith in lex Sarah and thought it could be used as a tool to make their work better.

The purpose of this study is to use a qualitative approach to highlight the western involvement in Thai orphanages and, on basis of Western moral development workers and volunteers, enlighten how Western colonial heritage can be recreated in the humanitarian economic aid.

The study is based on the recent tsunami disaster in 2004 which led to a huge voluntary effort by Western volunteers and organizations who wanted to rebuild the country. Now, seven years after the disaster, the country has recovered well and thanks to a strong turism, and industrial growth, the country has now reached the position of a middle income country with regional power.

The study presents a selection of previous ressearch in the area from different critical perspectives. It is a field study based on qualitative interviews with six informants that highlights the individual engagment in humanitarian assistance. Theories based on Post-colonialism and globalization have been used in order to analyze and reach the result of this study.
