The European Representative Democracy Data Archive2012Other (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We believe that a key to progress in terms of a better understanding of democratic politics rests on a research agenda that combines the best of cross-national statistical research with in-depth studies of historical pathways (path dependency), norms and practices in an analysis of rational politicians seeking power and policy influence. To enable us to conduct research on both that which is common across countries and specific to regions and the historical configuration of an individual country, we have built a new database with comparative data on cabinets, parliaments and political parties. It contains comparative data on 29 European countries

Miljökommunikation i dagspressen: En diskursanalys av hur SvD och DN framställer miljöfrågor2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The starting point of this study is that the news media in general strongly influence which topics determine the public agenda by their choice of what is considered newsworthy. The study is based on articles from two major Swedish daily newspapers, Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter.

The aim of our thesis is to establish how the environmental public debate as portrayed in the newspaper corresponds to the environmental discussion within the scientific (subject matter expert) field, that is taught by the academic institutions, or if the two materially differ. The environmental communication discourse at the academic institutions advocates ‘episodic’ formation as the driving force behind transformation of attitudes and behavioral preconceptions. This episodic formation is aimed at incentivizing change by creating intimacy to the incident by linking cause and consequence to the individual citizen instead of to society as a whole. The analysis consists of approximately 50 articles, all published in year 2010, and is based on CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) where we sought to map out the discourses that frame the representation of environmental topics in these two daily newspapers.

The result shows that the newspapers account of environmental topics only weakly corresponds to the scientific account. The media representation mainly adopts a ‘thematic’ formation in which environmental topics are frequently approached by means of distancing itself or taking a broader and detached stance instead of a specific and attached link to the individual. The result thus shows that the newspapers discourse practice does not positively drive changes to attitudes and behaviors but rather reinforces the prevailing discourse and social posture in society. At the same time the analysis shows that the two newspapers form a forum where many different views and values are being voiced and where many different groups in society are represented in democratic spirit. Both supporting and inhibiting views are presented in this context. If the newspapers overall discourse practice promotes or inhibits transformation of the public’s environmental attitudes and behavior tends towards that ‘status quo’ is upheld at the expense of change. This despite, environmental topics are considered important by the Swedish public in general.

The Development of Water Practices within Households in Ribáuè, Mozambique.2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Within the academic discussion, water is argued to be a ‘multifaceted resource’, yet, the social and cultural dimensions of water have received little attention. Furthermore, authors have highlighted a need to explore the phenomenon from both, the macro and micro level, however, debates regarding water tend to revolve around the former.

Following the need for a more local perspective, this study looks into water practices of a household, like using a watering can to irrigate crops or purifying water for consumption, as well as the environment in which these occur. Recognising that change is essential for development, it also explores if improvement of these practices is needed, and how development of these, if so, may be encouraged.

One perspective fostering such an understanding is Symbolic Interactionism, focusing on individuals and their behaviour and how this is influenced by their perceived reality and the interaction with oneself and others. This perspective is utilised as the analytical framework in order to explore people’s lives and their experiences. The research was carried out as a field work during April and May, 2013, in Ribáuè, Mozambique.

This study concludes that there is a recognised need to develop water practices in order to support and create favourable outcomes for households. One of the factors that this study highlights as important is to acknowledge individuals’ cognitive process in relation to the visible actions performed, emphasising the significance of taking both processes into account when attempting to encourage the development of water practices. For instance, it is advisable to provide not only theoretical instructions, but also to demonstrate and let the individuals carry out new practices.

By taking such factors into account, this may strengthen the efforts to encourage a household to develop its water practices. This study also proposes potential perspectives for future research.

#Förstårdumig?: En kvalitativ studie om hur digitaliseringen påverkat kommunikationen och relationen mellan yngre och äldre generationer2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose/Aim: Our purpose with this study is to examen the differences in communication between digital immigrants and digital natives, how the digitization has changed our way to communicate in an interpersonal matter.

Main Results: Through our study we have concluded that barriers do exist between students (natives) and teachers (immigrants), but not to the extent we first predicted. The digitization has resulted in a change in the way we communicate and our relation to each other. But in a purely communicative matter, the digitization hasn’t made it harder for natives and immigrants to understand each other, but it has contributed to new vocabulary and the use of the language. New codes has been developed, but thanks to the younger generations ability to adapt to change - this linguistic difference it is not a problem for the understanding of the code used by the immigrants. Through our study, we discovered, however, an unwillingness or fear of the immigrants to adapt to the younger code, and adapt to the technological change.

Key Words: digital native, digital immigrant, digitization, communication, interpersonal, barriers, code, encoding, decoding, context, culture

    Abstract [en]

Almost half of the population in Sweden suffers from obesity and the cases of eating disorders are increasing. We are exposed daily to the belief that losing weight will make us happier and it will just be through this particular diet. Even if it has been proven that short dieting plans like “lose 20 pounds in one month” doesn’t give a long-term result, society continues to buy into the idea that they do.

Every day 16000 placards are placed around us in Sweden with loud yellow colors and big black letters which make them almost impossible to avoid. Their main purpose is to attract and get as many people as possible to buy single copies.

This essay deals with several questions: How diet tips figures on placards and how this has developed through years. Also which consequences the result has on the society and our body ideals. The theories and concepts are derived from five areas of research: commercialism, media influence, source criticism, body issues and dietary. Our aim is to map, analyze and problematize how diet tips are presented quantitatively on placard. The method is quantitative research and the study is limited to the media content on placards for evening papers (Aftonbladet and Expressen) 2009, and a comparison between four years; 1979, 1989, 1999 and 2009.

An important conclusion from this study is that dieting has an important place in the media agenda. The number of placard about dieting increase after Christmas and before the summer and in April 2009 could you every two days read one. This shows that the newspaper plays on our self-esteems and diet tips on placard are commercially viable. Media has engrained in our minds that "thin is in", and "stout is most definitely out" and they use celebrities and “the ordinary person” to convince us to buy the newspaper. Another conclusion is that diet tips as a phenomenon is here to stay, a matter of fact it has gone from 3 placards about dieting 1979 to 97 placards 2009, and nothing indicates that it will decrease. The diet tips are confusing, misleading and have no credibility, which deeply impacts society in a negative way. Overweight people who need to lose weight get incorrect information, and thinness standout as healthy.

Den ensamma flatan och glitterbögen: En kvalitativ studie av hbtq-personers porträttering i tre olika kvinnomagasin2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this studie centers on how lgbt (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) are portrayed in women’s magazines. The magazines we have chosen to analyze are FRIDA, VeckoRevyn and amelia, which all three have different target groups. We have, with the assistance of the rhetorical and semiotic analysis methods, assessed 18 articles with their associated photographs. These methods are part of the qualitative analysis model and are used in order to study less empirical data with more depth. With the qualitative analysis we were able to see potential patterns among our empirical data.

Lgbt is known as a minority group and has often been described in a stereotypical way. We wanted to see if and how the portraying of lgbt has changed within the last 16 years and if the different target groups affect the portrayal.

Our studie shows that stereotypes, according to the magazines, are still a part of the preconceptions in our society. In the middle of 1990’s the magazines wrote about stereotypes such as the lonely lizzie and the sparkling faggot. Nowadays they focus on what is seen as feminine and/or masculine. Heteronormativity is still the prescribed values of today.

    Abstract [en]

Ireland had, by the year of 1998, been an island of war and conflict to some extent for almost 1000 years. The northeast part of the island, called Northern Ireland, had been under British domination for over 25 years when “the Troubles” ended by the year of 1998. This essay aims towards explaining how the first generation after “the Troubles” has been shaped in terms of political and religious beliefs and attitudes in the society of Belfast. Furthermore, this study seeks to understand the complex nature of the peace agreement and the political consociational power-sharing system that permeates Belfast and it’s people. By conduct interviews with six, picked young persons from Belfast, this essay will, in a qualitative and theoretical way, explain what, and even more so, why the prevailing attitudes exists, and which influences they are derived from. By a socialisation and Marxist theory, these articulated attitudes will be explained, compared and analysed on a deep level.

Art and Advertising2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis examined whether there is a distinct boundary between art and advertising. The collected data showed how art and advertising are linked to each other and also differ from each other, in particular through the latter half of the 1900’s. What was happening in society came to have great impact on what happened in art and advertising. In postwar Germany, capitalism realism evolved from the German pop art where the art was removed from the art gallery and placed on the streets where the people were, in an era that was characterized by a gap between the rich and the poor. Capitalism Realism went on to advertising which at the time was using the techniques of subliminal persuasion and later turned into a post-modern advertising. The study included examples of artists who collaborate with advertising, where advertising has worked artistically and how the artist became a trademark. The study also showed that there are strong objections in the art world to working with advertising, but not vice versa. Advertising seems happy to work with arts.

    Abstract [en]

A daily newspaper’s main purpose is to inform its readers without creating noise. Theimportance of the visual presentation is therefore of weight for an effectivecommunication process. This study informs about the importance of typography inthe visual decoding process. The study includes the Swedish newspaper DagensNyheter’s transition from printed media to digital media adapted to an Ipad. It alsoincludes what changes this transition has resulted in for the communication process.

The study has been conducted through a qualitative content analysis, where acomparative process of the selected medias has occurred. The theories we have beenusing in the study were mainly from a typographic point of view focusing onreadability. Other than that we have made use of theories about visual communicationand theories of the digital media's impact on society.

Our study shows that the transition from printed newspaper to digital newspaperadapted to an Ipad has taken typographical aspects into consideration whenpresenting the material. The convergence between printed media and digitalizedmedia has created a basis for interaction that makes the reader involved in theprocess. The former one-way communication has been replaced with a moreinteractive two-way communication where the user is more than just a receiver.

Euskadi Ta Askatasuna: - Reasons for Existence. A Case Study in the Basque Country2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this case study I explore why the conflict of the Basque country which involves Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) persists. The purpose is to gain an understanding of the existence of ETA. Working somewhat  as an ethnographer the method has been to observe Basque society and through semi- structured interviews gain an understanding of ETAs existence. As exemplified with the hermeneutic circle, this case study starts out with a preunderstanding of the reasons for the existence of ETA, a preunderstanding which alters many times during my visit to the Basque country.

Keys to understanding the continued existence of ETA is that historical “injustices” are perceived to still exist in the Basque country. Perceptions which question the legitimacy of the Spanish state in the Basque country. Further the social base of ETA, as exemplified in election support for Herri Batasuna (HB), still remains rather strong despite the party‟s illegalization and finally, the perceived lack of a functioning democracy in Spain and the lack of legitimacy of the Spanish state in the Basque country are among the reasons for the continued existence of ETA.

    Abstract [en]

Our thesis focus on how retirees perceive Tv4s news casts of economy news where we focused on five different aspects: What is the relationship between the news cast and the viewer and how does the viewer express their understanding of the news cast and the way it is constructed? What are the viewers attitude towards the news content and how do they find the news cast useful for them personally?

We choosed retirees as our target group due to their vulnerable economic position in today’s society and TV as an important medium for them due to the digital divide. The study was performed with twelve qualitative interviews and one group interview where six retirees took part.

We discovered a big interest for economic news in the target group. The majority had a sympathetic view of the news cast they saw but they also expressed skepticism toward the economy segment and/or news castings. The majority expressed a lack of trust for the journalists and the experts brought in to share observations and make announcements, and the financial business overall. The majority of the interviewees spoke of a hypothetic and/or possible usefulness but no one could express how the news castings affected them personally.

Coordination: key to development: Field study about rural livelihoods in Ribáuè and the impact of coordination failure2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Master thesis is the result of a study in which we looked at people's livelihoods - through the sustainable rural livelihoods analytical framework - from a coordination failure perspective. During three weeks spent in the district of Ribáuè, Mozambique, enabled us to conduct interviews with people from many different social categories and understand the conditions in which small-scale farmers live.

The paper tackles issues related to development in general and governmental intervention and contributes to the debate about the type of growth which is on-going in Mozambique. What are the coordination failures that impact people's livelihoods in Mozambique, a country where strong economic growth does not seem to help the poorest to get out of poverty.

Title: A Western Democracy? A case study about the development and quality of democracy in Klaipėda  rural municipality in Lithuania.

    Author: Ieva Barkauskaitė

    Supervisor: Gunnar Hansson

    Examinator: Per Strömblad

Educational program: International Politics Studies, Linnaeus University

    Last updated: 2012 06 01

The third wave of democratization saw an increased number of countries turning westward. Lithuania was one of these countries that begun their process of democratization. Today the country is based on the social order of democratic values and there is no doubt that the democracy is working. Lithuania has a freedom of expression, free and fair elections and a universal right to stand in them. Unfortunately, this does not mean that the quality of democracy in the country have reached its peak.

In the following pages I will present the development of democracy in the post-Soviet Lithuanian municipality – Klaipėda rural municipality. This essay focuses on the past 22 years from Lithuania’s declaration of independence in 1990 until today. However, for the sake of a greater understanding of the changes that have occurred in the municipality, I will in some cases describe how it was during the Soviet period.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the development of democracy and the current quality of democracy in this municipality. That will be achieved by defining the concepts of municipality and democracy, its types in addition to democracy existence criteria and by analyzing the municipality’s political culture as well as citizen rights and freedoms.

A disciplined configurative case study approach will be used for the purpose of this examination where I will use the existing theories to explain the selected case. In order to understand how far Klaipėda municipality’s development and quality of the democracy have come I will focus mainly on Robert Alan Dahl’s analytical framework for democracy and polyarchy. Wolfgang Merkel’s “embedded” and “defective” types of democracy will also be used. The material covered is wide, ranging from interviews with citizens and politicians to observations from a demonstration and a meeting where the Lithuanian prime minister attended.

The results and conclusion I can draw from this study is that Klaipėda municipality is a fully democratic society. However, there are several limitations in my work, such as those of an economical nature, and there needs to be more studies to qualify this suggestion.

Key words: Klaipėda rural municipality (in Lithuania), democracy, quality of democracy, types of democracy, criteria of democracy, Wolfgang Merkel, Robert Alan Dahl, Soviet Union.

Kosovo - en suverän stat: En uppsats om Kosovos självständighetsdeklaration och några av världens internationella huvudaktörers reaktioner på deklarationen 2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine why some countries in the world decided to support Kosovo’s declaration of independence in 2008, while others did not. The essay is a type of case study, with Kosovo’s independence as the main focus. For the purpose of the essay, main focus will be on the United States of America, Russia, China and Serbia. The countries’ actions will be examined through the theoretical perspectives presented in the book Essence of Decision: Rational Actor Model, Organizational Behavior and Governmental Politics.

The conclusion drawn is that countries put their own interests before the good of the international community, sometimes putting other countries at risk of conflict or war, to achieve their own goals. This can be seen in the cases of Russia and China especially, as they did not accept Kosovo’s independence partly because they have similar conflicts in their own states to that of Serbia’s with Kosovo.

Europeiska Unionens normativa makt i Bulgarien: Hur har EU påverkat Bulgariens status för minoriteter?2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Bulgaria’s entrance in the European Union (EU) 2007 was a big step for a country from the

Balkans. This is important considering that the country, the same way as its neighboring

countries, has had big ethnic breaches and cases of discrimination. One of the goals and

demands for Bulgaria’s entrance in the Union was that the country should implement

institutions and rules that ensure the protection for minorities. The EU has contributed with

different means in order for Bulgaria to reach this target, inter alia with economic means.

This paper investigates how the European Union as a normative power has worked for

implementation and promotion of minority rights in Bulgaria during the period that the

country was a candidate state. The paper also investigates whether the Union has been

successful with executing these goals when the state eventually became a member.

The results of this paper show that the Union has been using all means of normative power to

promote minority rights, but this has not been sufficient. The greatest problem lies in the fact

that the Union has for very long prioritized other areas for improvement rather than putting its

    focus on minority rights promotion.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the strategies adopted by the Swedish parliamentary parties against the Pirate Party (Piratpartiet). The study uses the PSO-theory, which attempt to explain the success of niche parties as a consequence of the established parties’ strategies against the new competitor. A qualitative analysis and a comparison of the parties’ manifestos from the 2002, 2006 and 2010 national elections is used to determine which strategies are adopted. Results show that a mixture of accommodative and dismissive strategies is used, which could help explain the failure of the Pirate Party in the elections.

    Abstract [en]

The debate about affirmative action for ethnic minorities in countries with another majority culture is growing bigger in many parts of the world. However, it is often the debate misses the aborigines within the countries’ borders. The aim of this paper is to investigate the possible conflict in opinions for xenophobic political parties when managing an aborigine population. I will use a qualitative method to study the ethnic minority Sámi in Sweden, Norway and Finland, and afterwards xenophobic parties view on them.

To reach a result will I present a scale over Xenophobia – Cosmopolitanism, which is described as a political cleavage. Finally I will, by comparing the empiric facts through that scale, demonstrate that there is a conflict in opinions for the investigated parties.

    Abstract [sv]

In Swedish shops today there are a lot of magazines aimed at teenagers, which fight for young girls’ attention. These teenage-magazines are one of the most important sources for young girls to get information about sex and love-relationships; therefor it’s important how these magazines portray it.

We have examined how the magazine Frida has portrayed sex and love-relationships from 1991 until today. The way sex and love-relationships are portrayed in Frida’s articles affect the young readers in their process of building an identity.

Using a combined rhetoric- and discourse analysis we found that the main focus in Frida is for the reader to have a love-relationship with a guy, instead of a physical sex-relationship. Frida uses all the rhetorical tools to convince their readers that what they are telling them is the right way to think and behave.

    Abstract [sv]

This is the era of the personal brand: En studie om betydelsen av det personliga varumärket i professionella sammanhang i dagens samhälle2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Authors: Phia Bergdahl & Karin Tydén

Title: This is the era of the personal brand – a study about the role of a personal brand in a professional context in modern society

Level: BA Thesis in Media and Communication Studies

    Location: Linnaeus University

    Language: Swedish

    Number of pages: 54

    Background

In pursuit of being unique and stand out, it has become fashionable to market yourself as a personal brand. According to some experts on the subject, this has become a necessity for survival in the tough competition about the jobs and the customers. With Internet and social media as a natural element in our society, we also have to relate to these channels when it comes to communicating ourselves.

    Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of the personal brand in a professional context in modern society and to explore Internet involvement in communicating the brand.

    Theories

We have used Bauman’s theory of “consumer society”, how we live in a society where we are both the consumers and the goods consumed. We have also used Castells’s theory of "network society" and how its growth is changing our culture. We have also used some general brand theories.

    Methodology

Our study is based on two methodological approaches. We have chosen to use a qualitative study consisting of interviews with experts within the field, and a quantitative study in the form of a questionnaire with a strategic selection of respondents.

    Conclusions

A personal brand plays a significant role in today's society, both professional and private. A strong personal brand reflects who the individual are, what the person stands for and contribute to the environment. It is a contributory factor for success in business and in the creation of identity. Internet and social media are good tools to communicate the personal brand. Regardless of financial means or status in society, the individual can build a platform to spread the message. The purpose of the visibility is important and it must be kept in mind that these channels may not only increase, but also reduce the credibility.

Destruction in the name of Development: a study on grassroots advocacy in rural India2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to find keys to successful advocacy in a rural, Indian setting. The study is based on inductive, explorative research at a grassroots level, from a bottom-up perspective. Geographically, it takes place in the East Godavari District, in the state of Andhra Pradesh. At the centre of this study is the NGO:s Sujana and the Kadali Network, who are both advocating the rights of poor, marginalised and deprived people, as well as training people to carry out advocacy themselves.

The theoretical framework for this thesis originates from theories within development communication, advocacy and Participatory Rural Appraisal. The research was carried out by making 16 individual interviews and 3 focus group interviews.  Findings from the interviews have been categorised into themes and analysed through meaning condensation.

The result of this study shows that there are multiple ways in which grassroots movements in East Godavari conduct advocacy. The analysis states that advocacy can be successful in a short to medium time span; the most prominent keys to success being: having a driving spirit, being creative, developing networks and being knowledgeable about laws and rights. In a longer time span though, the advocacy and struggle for change is hampered by lack of, or conflicting, political interest from the local government and by conflicting economical interests from companies.

"Made in Sölvesborg": - city branding av en mindre kommun2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Globalization has contributed to a tougher competitive environment. This change has created a need for a strong city identity. Local communities have to find their competitive edge and uniqueness to attract new residents, investors and visitors. The purpose of this thesis has been to give an explanation to why it’s important for a small local community to create a competitive identity. We’ve studied the case of Sölvesborg and how they communicated their profile via a communication campaign and what the purpose of this symbolic communication was. To reach our conclusions we have combined theoretical studies and qualitative interviews. After analyzing our material, we came to the conclusion that Sölvesborg uses city branding to be able to differentiate themselves in the competitive market by creating a unique profile. They chose to use the media coverage given when their local soccer team joined the highest league to create something that could get them to penetrate the media noise.

Offer för sin egen oförsiktighet?: en studie i hur Dominique Strauss-Kahn-fallet skildrades i svensk morgon- och kvällspress2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

On the 15th of May 2011 the former leader of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, was accused of sexually assaulting a maid in a hotel room in New York. Strauss-Kahn was cleared of all charges on the 23rd of August 2011 since it could not be proven that he had forced the maid to have sexual relations with him.

The purpose of this study is to examine how the case was framed in two Swedish newspapers, Svenska Dagbladet and Aftonbladet. Svenska Dagbladet is a broadsheet newspaper and Aftonbladet is a tabloid newspaper. The purpose of this study is also to find differences and similarities in the framing of the case in broadsheet newspapers and tabloid newspapers.

The study is primarily based on two different theories; the framing theory and the tabloidization theory. The method used is critical discourse analysis based on van Dijks theories and methods. A total of ten articles were examined, five from Svenska Dagbladet and five from Aftonbladet.

Our result revealed that both Svenska Dagbladet and Aftonbladet used dramaturgical methods like exaggeration and speculation in their reporting. The two newspapers also constructed the storyline about the persons involved in a similar way. These results indicate that the gap between how broadsheet newspapers and tabloid newspapers write their stories is decreasing.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims at examining factors that influence women’s choice of clothing. Focus lies on what women want to communicate with their clothes, how consumption is used as a means of expression, women’s attitude towards the clothing and the body image that media has created. Is there an underlying idea in a women’s choice of clothing and is she trying to express something specific? Why do women buy the clothes they do? The aim with this thesis is to identify if there is a difference between people from an urban area and those from a small town, as well what role the geographic difference plays in how fashion conscious you are or how you choose your clothes. The theoretical framework applied primarily includes Jean Baudrillard and Zygmunt Bauman's theories of consumption, Pierre Bourdieu's theory of distinction and a feminist theory of Judith Butler and Susan Bordo. A qualitative methodology has been applied in the form of extensive interviews with 18 women aged 20-30 living in Stockholm and Karlskrona. The results showed how women use clothing to express their personality in different ways depending on the social situation they’re in. Furthermore the results showed that other women are a woman’s biggest threat and men do not have a big impact on women’s choice of clothing.

    Abstract [en]

This essay has a purpose to understand and investigate how disabled people, where the handicap imply difficulty to speak for one self, get the rights of self-determination and influence satisfied. Our purpose with this essay is to focus on how representatives from organizations, trustees and Support and Service for Persons with Certain functional Impairments- officials

(abbreviated LSS after the Swedish title of the Act lag om stöd och service till vissa funktionshindrade), describe and discuss matters concerning the individuals’ opinions and requests from within their respective position. We will with this as a base analyze how these three parties facilitate and meet the individuals’ influence and self-determination. Through six qualitative interviews with these three parts we have gathered the foundation for our study. We have analyzed our material through role theory and power-perspective. We have also been using three thesis that studies disabled peoples influence and self-determination when in contact with personnel and public authorities. Our result shows that representatives from organizations, trustees and LSS-officials are sensitive to the individuals’ requests and opinions. This is nevertheless experienced as complicated and is dependent on what respective roles these hold. The contact between these parts is also flourished by different power-relations. We argue that the individuals’ self-determination and influence is not as natural as the law states. The individuals’ rights are determined by many different aspects.

Demokratins väktare?: En kvalitativ studie av hur personliga handläggare på Försäkringskassan upplever och hanterar målkonflikter2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine how administrative officers at the Swedish social insurance agency experience and deal with the goal conflicts they may experience. Furthermore, the purpose is to gain a greater understanding on how they perceive their role in the implementation process, and their position as the link between the citizens and the state. Two potential conflicts are examined; between quantitative goals and performance measures and those more qualitative and hard to measure; between economic values such as cost efficiency and productivity and democratic values such as the rule of law. The other conflict examined is that between implementing and following the laws set forth, take into account the individual needs and interests of the citizen. The theoretical framework consists of Lundquist’s theory on public officers as the guardians of democracy, which means that they should not only implement laws and rules according to political intentions, but also make sure that the democratic values and principles are followed in the relationship between state and citizen. Michael Lipsky’s theory on street-level bureaucrats is also used in the analysis.

The study concludes that in the first conflict, they exercise some amount of discretion in prioritizing between the quantitative and qualitative goals, and see a synthesis between quality and quantity. In the other conflict, their discretion is significantly smaller, which makes it difficult to at the same time implement laws and take into account the sometimes unique and complex individual needs they encounter. Thus, their function in this respect is mainly to implement, as the role of the guardian in this conflict is hampered, while it is more applicable in the first one.

    Abstract [sv]

Vi är tråkiga Kalmar: Fotbollssupportar som värdeskapare i medieekonomin2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is studying football supporters in their role as consumers but foremost as producers - as creators of value. The aim is to identify and analyse their communicative practices in order to see in what extent they produce value for football clubs. The point of departure is that the fandom based search for identity combined with projection has a great importance for how strong their ties to the football club will be. The purpose of projection is to make the club fit into the supporters lifestyle. Occasionally situations arise when it is difficult to maintain this image, such as when supporters is expected to work unpaid in the elite soccer clubs that more and more appears as what they really are, profit-driven companies.

Research has so far just occasionally considered supporters as value creators for the football clubs. A key part of this thesis is therefore to examine how fans create these values, and whether the football clubs desire for an audience with great purchasing power, leads to tensions between them and the traditional audience. The contradiction is on the agenda because the elite clubs believe that new and comfortable arenas are crucial for their economic development.

The case study shows that the football club Kalmar FF, with the help of a new arena, is striving to attract new audiences with greater purchasing power than the traditional audience. This is clearly confirmed, especially by the presence of sponsor facilities, but with an assumed lack of terraces. This has generated a both practical and symbolic struggle between the club on the one hand and supporters on the other. For the supporters the terraces are an important part of identity and tradition because they are associated with the old and less profitable. From one perspective, the clubs position is economically rational; with more seating football clubs are probably able to attract new audiences who can pay more. From another perspective, the less rational, it runs the risk of losing fans and their many value-adding practices, including the carnival presence that seems to be a prerequisite for the audiences desire to watch football, both on the ground and through the media.

The analysis reveals a partly new dimension of fandom, the value-adding, and thereby shows how substantial everyday acting is bound to football economy and the sport industrial complex in general.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Mer pengar, fler poliser – men färre lösta brott!

    Abstract [en]

Sweden is a multi cultural country, where almost twenty percent of the population come from another cultural background. This study examines to what extent people with a foreign origin appear in two local, Swedish newspapers, Barometern and Östra Småland, and what role they are given. Do they appear as foreigners or immigrants or do they figure as any Swede, irrespective of their origin background?

We have made a review by studying pictures of people with a foreign origin, based on name and appearance. During the time period, March 1st – April 30 th 2010, there were 2206 articles with pictures of people where 189 of them did show people with a foreign origin. Although, only 22 of these persons occurred in their role as foreigner or immigrant, the remaining majority occurred due to personal character or competence. Thus, the origin background did not matter in the context.

Hur doftar parfymreklamen?: En Studie i hur man kommunicerar doft genom bild i parfymreklamen2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the help of image analysis and scent theory, we have made an analysis that explains how the perfume smells in advertising. There are many different factors that play a role in our perception of smell by image. We have found that using the connotations we can get a sense of the scent. What helps us along the way, the colors, the women and the environment. From this one different conclusions are mad and we create a scent sensation.

Egyptiska universitetsstudenters åsikter om det egyptiska utbildningssystemets förutsättningar att främja en demokratisk utveckling i Egypten2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine Egyptian university students´attitudes about the Egyptian education system´s ability to support a democratic process in Egypt. In order to carry out my study, scientific books and articles have been read and interviews have been made among Egyptian university students. The interviews contained questions about the Egyptian education system´s impact on the democratic process in Egypt and which impact the Egyptian education system has had on the Egyptian revolution.

The conclusion drawn from my study is that Egyptian university students find the contemporary Egyptian education system based on authoritarian rules and with a lack of democratic values. The Egyptian university students believe that to establish democratic institutions in Egypt, the Egyptian citizens need a better understanding about democratic values. However, some of the students believe that the democracy that should be established in Egypt, must be based on Islamic values and to succeed with that, Islamic studies must play a greater part in the Egyptian education.

When it comes to the Egyptian education system´s impact on the Egyptian revolution the Egyptian university students´opinions were somehow divided.

Svensk Dagspress - Dressed for Success?: En kvalitativ undersökning om dagstidningens framtida utveckling i sökandet efter en fungerande affärsmodell2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The digitalization of the media industry has involved great changes for the Swedish daily press. Instead of subscribing on a daily newspaper, more people tend to read newspaper's free edition online.  The recent recession has contributed to strike hard against the newspaper's economy. This is the problem our research is based upon. How will the newspaper develop and which measures have to be done to get a well functioning business model that is suited for future conditions?

We have made qualitative interviews with Swedish newspapers: Göteborgs-Posten, Norrköpingstidningen, Sydsvenskan and with the danish newspaper Politiken. To widening the view, we have also made several interviews with well-placed observers, both domestic and foreign.

The results show, that in order to get the daily press financially stable, the content within the newspaper has to be even more target oriented in order to attract both readers and advertisers.  The results also show that it is important for the newspaper to separate the content of the paper-edition from the online-edition. That is, the free online-edition should not entirely replace the traditional paper-edition.

We claim that successful daily press newspapers will in the future use a wider spectra of media-channels. The daily press will act more as a brand with the goal to produce high quality news in several different media-channels.

Education and Far-Right Discourses: A Study of French and Swedish Textbooks2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

At present, the attractiveness of far-right parties in the politics of numerous West-European countries is clearly visible and underlines a vulnerability of their populations to far-right ideas and discourses. France and Sweden are two of those countries in which the attractive power of far-right ideas is relatively important, which draws concerns over a future peaceful and multicultural Europe.

Departing from a social-constructivist worldview and Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus which emphasises on the importance of education in shaping the worldview of people, this research will attempt to look at the education systems of France and Sweden for nourishing the attractiveness of far-right ideas in society. The idea of this research is thus to see how education, through the study of French and Swedish schoolbooks, influences students in relation to their understanding of foreign cultures.

The findings of this research indicate that the intermediate schoolbooks of France and Sweden are responsible for spreading xenophobic, anti-immigrant, pro-European and racist elements in the minds of pupils, which ultimately create a platform for far-right ideas to flourish upon.

Modig eller rar, vad sa far?: En studie om Kamratpostens framställning av flickors och pojkars fritid2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to shed light on how journalists describe the child’s world and what gender labels are used in their descriptions. We wanted to get a better understanding of what happens when gender is constructed.

In order to study how gender is constructed, we chose to examine how the children’s magazine Kamratposten describes children’s spare time. We chose Kamratposten because it turns to both girls and boys. In order to analyze the paper, we chose to do a discourse analysis, and used Norman Fairclough’s and Ylva Brune’s analytical models. When we analyzed the texts we studied previous research and theories about children, gender and media.

We analyzed how Kamratposten constructs girls and boys spare time. We made a qualitative content analysis of 20 articles and found that the 1700s views on gender still exist.

Thus Kamratposten ascribes girls and boys different gender roles, different behavior and activities in the articles studied. Girls seem to still be positioned in the private surroundings of the home, while boys are positioned in the public sphere. Another difference noted between the genders is the construction of a serious passive and productive girl, and a playful active mostly non-productive boy.
