    Abstract [en]

    To survive hard international competition, it is necessary for many producing companies to enhance their competition positions by, for example, reducing production costs and maintaining and improving product quality to increase the profit margin. In order to achieve these strategic goals, strategies for making maintenance more profitable are developed, introduced and discussed in this chapter. These strategies are all developed as software modules included by an innovatively new maintenance decision support system (MDSS). Also, theoretical backgrounds are introduced, and software prototypes for making the application of any of the tools on a daily basis easier and more cost-effective are developed and discussed, and their functionalities are tested. MDSS consists of three toolsets, where each toolset consists of one to three tools that can be used for different objectives and applications. It is designed to support maintenance and production engineers to achieve dynamic and cost-effective maintenance decisions. The latter will be discussed in Chapter 13. MDSS software prototype can be utilised for several objectives, such as, to:

    • enhance the accuracy of maintenance decisions;

    • simulate and select the most cost-effective maintenance solution, i.e., the best investment in maintenance;

    • identify and prioritise problem areas; and

    • map, monitor, analysis, follow up and assess maintenance contribution in company profit.

    Abstract [en]

    The common thread in achieving and maintaining high Overall Equipment Effectiveness, OEE, is the availability of improved manufacturing processes capable of producing quality products without interruption. Implementing Just In Time, JIT, philosophy demands healthy processes. Any interruption of the line caused by any equipment malfunction or failure will result in a major disruption of output or even line or factory shutdown. Thus, an effective maintenance program should be evolved to provide the required availability of machinery and output quality. A new concept of condition-based maintenance, Total Quality Maintenance, TQMain, is presented. It aims to maintain not only machinery but all the elements constituting a manufacturing process, e.g. production/operation, environmental condition, personnel, methods, material, quality control. TQMain is a result of establishing a common database through integrating the maintenance program with other plant programs to form an overall plant Information Technology, IT-system. Identifying and ‘eliminating’ quality deviations and failure causes at early stages, and extensive use of data feedback are the suggested tools to accomplish continuous improvements and to assure high quality products.

    Abstract [en]

    When using vibration-based maintenance, it is easier to detect damage in rolling element bearings. But the damage severity and risk of bearing's failure, if no maintenance action such as replacement is done, can not be assessed accurately. When the vibration level of a rolling element bearing is increasing or it is close to (or greater than) a predetermined replacement level, the assessment of the probability of a bearing’s failure enhances the decision making process. Thus, at each vibration measurement occasion a decision has to be made regarding whether the bearing needs to be maintained and how urgent it actually is.

    The paper describes a graphical method for both assessing the probability of failure of damaged rolling element bearing and predicting the residual of its effective life. It uses history of the bearing in question and life statistics as well as the vibration levels at failure/condition-based replacements of past bearings of the same design or of very similar performance and duties. This method is based on the concept of Total Time on Test, TTT-plot. The application of TTT-plot on age and condition-based maintenance techniques are discussed and described by two examples. This graphical method is developed from previous work by the author and others.

    A production process includes several sub-processes (working areas) that are responsible for performing the different tasks required to accomplish the mission of the process. Thus, it is important to avoid a shortage of resources, unplanned stoppages and idle times that may arise. The problem addressed in this paper is: How should maintenance be considered in conjunction with plant activities, such as production, quality and personnel competence for easily and effectively identifying and quantifying company losses in profitability and eliminating underlying causes? In this paper, the interactions between major working areas have been introduced and discussed. The major result achieved in this study is the development of a new model (Maintenance Function Deployment (MFD), for an easy and effective identification and quantification of company losses in profitability. Four matrixes have been used for developing MFD model for effectively integrating maintenance with production, competence and quality. An application example is conducted to demonstrate the possibility of applying the model and its potential for enhancing production processes profitably. The main conclusion is: applying MFD gives an enormous opportunity to continuously maintain the quality of the working areas under consideration, which makes MFD one of the company’s objective-driven tools for enhancing its profitability and competitiveness.

    It is usual when using CM technology for assessing the state of a component and planning maintenance actions using predetermined levels for warnings and replacements. The replacement of a damaged component is usually done at lower or higher than the predetermined level, which both means losses. This is because the probability of doing replacements just at the predetermined level is negligibly small. The accuracy in the assessment of the condition of a component has big technical and economic impact on the output of the machine, production process and consequently company profitability and competitiveness. The higher the accuracy in assessing the condition of a component yields higher probability of avoiding failures and planning maintenance actions at low costs. In this paper, techniques for assessing the state of a component using both mechanistic and other statistical approaches are considered. This paper also applies Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) Chart for identifying the time of damage initiation and reducing false alarms.  Techniques for assessing the probability of failure of a component and its residual life, and predicting the vibration level at the next planned measuring opportunity or planned stoppage are introduced, discussed, computerised and tested. The problem addressed is: How is it possible to increase the accuracy of assessing the condition of a component? The major result achieved is; development of a model for more accurate assessment of the condition of a component/equipment through combining different approaches. The main conclusion that can be drawn is; applying the model, it is possible to enhance the accuracy of assessment of the condition of a component/equipment and consequently maintenance decision since the integrated model provides comprehensive and relevant information in one platform.

    In general, all the elements involved in a production process, such as tools, machinery, methods, competence and working environment are exposed to changes. Thus, to maintain and improve company profitability and competitiveness, it is necessary to reduce losses through maintaining and improving the quality of the elements involved in the production process. Therefore, the maintenance strategy applied should be dynamic to be suited for all these changes cost-effectively. In producing companies, the accuracy of maintenance decisions is essential for reducing economic losses generated due to unnecessary stoppages in companies of intensive capital investment where stoppage time is expensive, especially in paper and pulp mills, refineries, power stations and engineering manufacturing. Therefore, it is necessary for maintenance and production managers to have a system providing the data required to achieve dynamic and cost-effective maintenance decisions.

    In this chapter, the new maintenance decision support system (MDSS) for achieving dynamic and cost-effective maintenance decisions developed in Chapter 12 is tested and discussed. The developed system is MIMOSA compatible, consists of three toolsets and five software modules for performing six services to achieve different objectives, e.g.:

    1. higher accuracy of maintenance decisions;

    2. selection of the most cost-effective maintenance solutions;

    3. identification and prioritisation of problem areas and assessment of losses in production time; and

    4. mapping, follow up and assessment of maintenance cost-effectiveness (maintenance savings and profit) to achieve continuous and cost effective improvement.

    Enhancement of company competitiveness and profitability demands continuous, high quality and trouble free production. Technical specifications and the condition of a wind turbine depend on the quality and condition of its significant components, which usually have the biggest impact on production continuity, - cost per KW and the environment. These necessitate intelligent technologies for maintaining the quality of significant components. Thus, it would be mandatory to select the most informative condition monitoring (CM) system and most cost-effective maintenance policy. In this paper, wind turbine problems are specified and described, available maintenance and CM techniques are discussed, and a maintenance solution with clearly specified objectives are suggested, discussed and the potential results are outlined in the end.

    The effectiveness of vibration-based monitoring, (VBM), system may be measured in terms of reduced stoppage rates and increased use of potential bearing life. Analysis of data from roller bearings at two paper mills suggests that greater bearing lives can be safely achieved by increasing the accuracy of the vibration data, This paper relates bearing failures to the observed vibration spectra and their development over the bearings' lives. The literature was found mainly to confirm the author's analysis. A systematic approach which describes the performance and objectives of the studies is discussed. Explanations of the mechanisms behind some frequent modes of early failure and ways to avoid them are suggested. it is shown theoretically, and partly confirmed by the analysis of unfortunately incomplete data from two paper mills over manly years, that accurate prediction of remaining bearing life requires (a) enough vibration measurements, (b) numerate records of operating conditions, (c) better discrimination between frequencies in the spectrum and (d) correlation of (b) and (c). This is because life prediction depends on precise knowledge about primary, harmonic and side band frequency amplitudes and their development over time, Much money could be saved because some policies-utilise as little as half of the bearing's potential life.

    Abstract [en]

    Rolling element bearing failures in paper mill machines are considered in relation to their critical role in the machine function. The use of expensive, sophisticated and highly automated equipment and machines and the intention to achieve higher quality products, longer machine life, higher machinery effectiveness and safer operating processes were the main driving force motivating efforts to improve maintenance concept during the last 50 years. In this paper, a conceptual model that integrates the available condition information, the deterministic models used in condition monitoring based upon mechanical theory and the probabilistic models used in the area of operational research is developed and its applicability is discussed. This models covers fault detection of a mechanical component such as a rolling element bearing, prediction of its vibration level in the near future, assessment of the probability of failure of a component over a finite period of time of interest.

    This chapter discusses the reliability, operation and maintenance strategies for wind power systems. It examines the role of systems engineering in optimising the aspects of a system relating to reliability, supportability and maintainability. It considers various maintenance approaches and the role of proper maintenance practices in providing a secure and reliable energy supply at the right cost. It discusses the importance of identifying and understanding the relevant cost factors associated with wind power systems, based on lifecycle costing and using relevant performance measures to help select a cost-effective maintenance approach. It then reviews some efforts aimed at improving the design, production, construction, operation and maintenance of wind power systems. Finally, some future trends are discussed in the areas of operation and maintenance of wind power systems.

    Detta examensarbete är utfört i samarbete med dumpertillverkaren Volvo CE i Braås. Då dumpern framförs i hård terräng är det nedersta insteget fäst i två stålvajrar vilket gör det flexibelt. Då flexibiliteten in mot maskinen idag är större än företaget önskar undersöks det i detta arbete alternativ till dagens lösning. Detta görs med hjälp av ingenjörsverktyget ”Eight Steps to Getting Design Right” vilket är en produktutvecklingsmetod som gör det lätt för läsaren att följa utvecklingen från idé till färdig produkt. Arbetet resulterade i att två nya lösningar togs fram. En lik dagens, som bygger på att lösningen är flexibel i två led samt har en styvare vajer jämfört med den på dagens lösning. Den andra lösningen, tänkt som tillvalslösning bygger på leder som innanför ett robust skal är kopplat till en kraftkälla som gör det möjligt för steget att fällas upp och ned.

    Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka vilken kompetens skolan tycker är viktig för handledning under det arbetsplatsförlagda lärande (APL) samt några handledares syn på sin egen kompetens att handleda elever under praktiken. I vår undersökning finner vi att skolan/huvudmannen inte alltid ställer de rätta kraven för att APL ska kunna ge eleven den bästa praktiken. Handledarna anser att goda yrkeskunskaper och lyhördhet är viktiga egenskaper för handledning under APL. I de intervjuer vi genomfört anger handledarna också att pedagogiskt kunnande hos handledaren är viktigt och det framkommer att handledare och yrkeslärare i stort sett har samma syn på vilken kompetens som är viktigast, nämligen yrkeskunskapen. Något överraskande tog ingen av handledarna upp kännedom om kursmålen som en angelägen kompetens. Vår viktigaste slutsats är att skolans huvudman behöver frigöra mer tid för yrkeslärarna som ansvarar för APL. Tid som kan användas för att på olika sätt ge företagen en förståelse och kunskap om vad det innebär att ta emot praktikanter från yrkesprogrammen. Förbättringar vi föreslår är att ta skolan till företagen, d.v.s. att handledarutbildning genomförs på arbetsplatsen och att en logg upprättas till varje praktikplats. Detta skulle ge flera vinster då yrkesläraren dels får en chans att lära känna handledaren och arbetsplatsen samtidigt som yrkesläraren får en möjlighet att på plats se vilka kursmål som är möjliga att nå på just den arbetsplatsen.

If the driver engages the all-wheel-drive at a point where traction already has been lost, a relative rotational speed in the dog clutch will occur. If this relative speed is too high the dog clutch bounces of itself before coupling or it does not couple at all.

    To avoid this problem, the geometry of the teeth is modified. FE simulations are done for the existing model as well as for all the new models in order to find out which of them can handle the highest relative rotational speed.

    The results show that the original model is not the best one. Simple modifications of the teeth’s chamfer distance and chamfer angle shows that the dog clutch can handle up to 120 rpm of relative rotational speed whereas the original model only handles 50 rpm.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate how well informed and prepared Swedish students are for international studies, work or internship. The result shows that 85 percent of the responding students do not think that they receive sufficient information regarding studies, work or internship abroad. In comparison to the 79 percent of the students who are interested in international experience, the unsatisfied need for information is clear.

    Abstract [en]

    In an effort to streamline processes and create a better standard, industrial construction has become increasingly common in the Swedish construction industry. Therefore, this thesis focuses on a unique proposal on floors for balloon systems, where the aim has been to investigate the possibility of a new type of bracket for balloon systems. The work will focus on the bearing capacity of the landfill and the establishment of a spring constant for this heap. This will be achieved through practical tests and simple calculations. The practical work relates to load the two prototypes of a new type of flooring warehouse to breach and then analyze the weaknesses in the structures. This degree will only consider the design and construction of a mounting profile designed to facilitate the slab types with varying span. The two prototypes have been stressed to breach, and the force and deflection have been measured to develop a spring constant. The laboratory results indicate that it is possible to use this heap profile in construction of light beams.

    ITT Water & Wastewater place high demands on cost-effective production which is a major contributing factor to the company enact as a world leader in its market. In order to obtain cost-effective production, the combination man robot proved to be successful.

    The thesis purpose was to provide data for ITT Water & Wastewater to take decisions concerning the release of indirect staff in line 15´s isolation station at the electric motor workshop. The purpose of the implement supported by the reinforced purposes to increase the utilization of the robot and reduce the adaptation time at the isolation machine.

    The work builds on qualitative and quantitative data in the shape of measurements, interviews and own observations. On the reliance of data four different suggestions were presented. The suggestions emphasized among integration of working moment, increased automation level and outsourcing.

    I detta examensarbete undersöks lärarens betydelse för elevens motivation. Syftet med föreliggande

    arbete är att undersöka vilka egenskaper eleverna på gymnasieskolan anser att en lärare bör ha för att de

    ska uppleva motivation i skolan samt vilken pedagogik de anser har betydelse för motivationen. Metoden

    som använts är en kvalitativ studie med öppna intervjuer, genomförda med fyra elever i årskurs tre på

    yrkesprogram. Tidigare forskning och teoretiska utgångspunkter har använts och analyserats i arbetet.

    Läraren har en stor betydelse för eleverna och läraryrket är ett mångfasetterat yrke. Som lärare bör det

    skapas en god relation och låta eleven få en delaktighet samtidigt som lektioner ska bedrivas med

    entusiasm och vara av god pedagogisk kvalitet för en hel klass. Detta ställer höga krav och ett stort

    engagemang av lärarens och dennes profession. En positiv människosyn där eleven blir sedd och

    bekräftad i en god kommunikation mellan lärare och elev är en bra grundsten för att eleven ska uppnå

    motivation. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att läraren har betydelse för elevens motivation, både

    lärarens egenskaper och dess pedagogik har en påvisad betydelse. Detta material är begränsat och arbetet

    relativt litet vilket gör att en sådan slutsats inte går att dra utifrån det här arbetet.

    Wind energy accounts for 9.1% of the total energy capacity in Europe. Recent studies have raised critical questions regarding the dependability of current wind turbines. The statistical data reveals that gear box is the most critical component reducing dependability caused by increased failure rate, downtime, and high repair cost (J. Ribrant and L. Bertling, 2007). Gear box failures in wind farms reveal a staggering 19.4 % of downtime of operation (J. Ribrant and L. Bertling, 2007). A significant reduction in the failure rate has been observed in the recent years, but downtime of operation and high repair investment still remains a bottleneck. Wear is the most critical failure mode and a number of theories have been proposed in order to understand the system behavior of wear mechanism. The empirical and historical incident data shows that the lubrication system has the largest share of contribution of gearbox failures and wear rate. On other hand, a number of commercial lubrication system have developed to cope with wear mechanism, however, these systems have different capabilities and characteristics and needed to be assessed in a new life cycle perspective. The purpose of the thesis is to analyze the influence of lubrication system on the current problem of wear in Wind Turbine Gearbox and improve the existing lubrication system architecture. The research methodology adopted is System Engineering approach with architecture assessment tools. The expected result of the thesis is effective and efficient wind turbine gearbox lubrication system architecture and an efficient contractual process between lubrication system provider and purchaser.

    Abstract [en]

    The reforming of hot gas generated from biomass gasification and high temperature gas filtration was studied in order to reach the goal of the CHRISGAS project: a 60% of synthesis gas (as x(H2)+ x(CO) on a N2 and dry basis) in the exit gas, which can be converted either into H2 or fuels. A Ni-MgAl2O4 commercial-like catalyst was tested downstream the gasification of clean wood made of saw dust, waste wood and miscanthus as herbaceous biomass. The effect of the temperature and contact time on the hydrocarbon conversion as well as the characterization of the used catalysts was studied. Low (<600 °C), medium (750°C–900 °C) and high temperature (900°C–1050 °C) tests were carried out in order to study, respectively, the tar cracking, the lowest operating reformer temperature for clean biomass, the methane conversion achievable as function of the temperature and the catalyst deactivation. The results demonstrate the possibility to produce an enriched syngas by the upgrading of the gasification stream of woody biomass with low sulphur content. However, for miscanthusthe development of catalysts with an enhanced resistance to sulphur poison will be the key point in the process development.

    Abstract [en]

    Växjö university has together with Södra developed a new green-glued laminated beam, which to be used in a building system. To make a product of the beam it is desired to also develop a building system based on the beam. An important part of such a building system is the connections. The main aim of the thesis was to design a new beam-to-beam connection in for the new green-glued laminated boards.

    This thesis is about to develop and test a new connection for a beam-to-beam connection in the building system. The requirements set on the connection was that it should be used in an office building with a beam length of 6 m, the connection should be fast to assemble and invisible. The report thoroughly describes the conceptual design, the development and test of the connection.

    Five different types of connections were designed in the conceptual design phase. One of these connections fulfilled the requirements and was taken to the development and testing phase. Three versions of the connection were tested. The report describes how the green-glued laminated beams with the connections were tested in a testing machine until the failure occurs. The developed connection could fulfil the requirements set on the connection. One version of the connection was even stronger than the green-glued laminated beams.

    Abstrakt

    Alla som jobbar i restaurangkök utsätts dagligen för en stor mängd fysiska risker. Till denna miljö skickas gymnasieelever med inriktning restaurang att göra sin 15 veckor långa Arbetsplatsförlagda utbildning (Apu). I många fall har inte handledarna någon handledarutbildning och har dålig kunskap om elevernas kunskapsnivå och gällande säkerhetsregler. Detta förstärks ofta med en bristfällig kommunikation mellan skola och handledare.

    Vi har fått intrycket av att säkerhetsfrågan är för känslig att diskutera därför finns det väldigt lite artiklar och forskning mm inom detta område.

    Vårt huvudsyfte var att göra en lathund som bedömdes kunna bidra till att öka den fysiska säkerheten för restaurangelever på Apu. Lathunden skall vara till hjälp för både elev, handledare och lärare och även öka kommunikationen mellan parterna.

    Vår frågeställning:

    Hur kan vi med hjälp av en lathund bidra till att den fysiska säkerheten för restaurangelever på Apu ökar?

    Detta har vi med hjälp av kvalitativa intervjuer med elever, handledare och lärare undersökt.

    Intressekravet hos samtliga målgrupper var en lathund i form av ett bindande kontrakt för samtliga parter, innehållande fysiska säkerhetsregler under Apu, kontakt uppgifter samt rättigheter och skyldigheter för samtliga parter.

    Kontraktskrivningen kräver ett fysiskt möte så därför har vi även gjort litteraturstudie om det fysiska mötet för att understryka hur viktigt det är.

    Även under utformningen av lathunden/kontrakt har vi tagit hjälp av litteraturstudier.

    This thesis deals with the impact sound of two wooden buildings on the campus site in Växjö. The city is highlighted frequently as a good model on environmental and climate issues. The municipal real estate company that owns, manages and builds the university's buildings, is interested in these issues when building new houses. The two most recently built houses are constructed with wooden frames, which is considered a good environmental choice. Future house is also expected to be built with wooden frames. Unfortunately problems due to acustics are often raised. One of the existing houses at the university are said to have problems with its impact sound and the property owner want this potential problem to be improved for future buildings. The purpose of this study is to gain knowledge from two existing wooden houses in the area. To do this a survey investigating how the acoustics of the buildings are perceived is compared with measurement of impact sound measurements.

    Beskrivande syfte                                              Syftet med vår studie är att belysa om elever på Handel- och administrationsprogrammet samt Omvårdnadsprogrammet har ambitioner om att ha elevinflytande i hur sin utbildning/undervisning utformas. Vi vill även undersöka om vad de vill ha inflytande över och vad de anser inflytandet leder till.

    Frågeställningar                                                 Finns viljan till elevinflytande i hur utbildningen/undervisningen utformas?

                                                                                  Hur vill eleverna att elevinflytandet skall ske?

                                                                                  Vart leder inflytandet till, enligt eleverna?

    Metod                                                                  Vi har i vår undersökning gjort kvalitativa intervjuer med åtta elever i årskurs två på Omvårdnadsprogrammet och Handels- och Administrationsprogrammet på gymnasieskolor i Kalmar respektive Skåne län. Intervjufrågorna baseras på och analyseras utifrån våra frågeställningar och litteratur som vi läst om elevinflytande.

    Resultat                                                               Resultatet belyste tre kategorier som utgick från sex underkategorier. Dessa tre kategorier var vilja, samarbete

    och motivation.

    Vilja, till att ha inflytande, beskrevs av respondenterna som att de vill ha ett reellt inflytande i examinationsform och lektionsinnehåll. Eleverna vill ha ett samarbete med lärarna i hur utbildningen ska utformas. Ett ökat elevinflytande leder enligt eleverna till ökad motivation, enligt eleverna. 

    Bifynd: Begreppet elevinflytande var inte bekant för eleverna.

    Betydelse för läraryrket                                   Studien kan uppmärksamma lärare om att elever ska ha elevinflytande, att det är viktigt för elevernas motivation till lärande. Det gagnar eleverna att ta mer ansvar för sitt lärande om de får vara med och utforma sin utbildning. Det är viktigt att läraren verkar på ett demokratiskt sätt, och tänker igenom hur det ska genomföras.
