Elevers uppfattning om läxor: -en studie i årskurs 52013Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The political criterion within the Copenhagen criteria is an important part of the enlargement in the EU. The question is: Can we see any liberal thoughts when it comes to the political criteria? Yes, we can, more or less. In the political criteria we can read about four various concepts which are about human rights, democracy, the protection for the minorities, and legal certainty (a constitutional state). I write about FYRO Macedonia and Albania which sooner or later are going to be a part of the European Union; they are called candidate countries of the EU which means that they have been approved by the council of ministers to continue their ambition for an EU-membership. But the question is if these countries yet have reached the aim of the political criteria. Are there any factors which are diminishing the democratic progress in these countries? Do FYRO Macedonia and Albania have any liberal values, if not, which are the factors that may cause problems? Is it about the economy, history, social conditions, the employment and politics?

Purple Identity: A study of identity changes in the novel The Color Purple2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis attempts to bring up the concepts of identity changes in Alice Walkers book TheColor Purple, which is set during the 1930s in the Southern parts of the United States, whereblack people were oppressed by white Americans. The study shows that the protagonist Celie,a black young girl, adopts different identities due to stages of her life and the peoplesurrounding her. It is shown that Celie’s identity changes occur in different stages throughouther life, Childhood, Wifehood, Segregation and Sisterhood. This is due to her lack ofknowledge about life in general, and her idea that other people make one’s identity. It is foundthat Celie, when meeting a strong black woman, discovers that identity is never made byothers, but people around you can influence and guide your search for identity.

Pelagic microbial heterotrophy in response to a highly productive bloom of Phaeocystis antarctica in the Amundsen Sea Polynya, Antarctica2016In: Elementa: Science of the Anthropocene, E-ISSN 2325-1026, Vol. 4, p. 1-18, article id 000102Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Heterotrophic bacteria play a key role in marine carbon cycling, and understanding their activities in polar systems is important for considering climate change impacts there. One goal of the ASPIRE project was to examine the relationship between the phytoplankton bloom and bacterial heterotrophy in the Amundsen Sea Polynya (ASP). Bacterial abundance, production (BP), respiration, growth efficiency, and extracellular enzyme activity (EEA) were compared to nutrient and organic matter inventories, chlorophyll a (Chl a), viral and microzooplankton abundance, and net primary production (NPP). Bacterial production and respiration clearly responded (0.04-4.0 and 10-53 mu g C L-1 d(-1), respectively) to the buildup of a massive Phaeocystis antarctica bloom (Chl a: 0.2-22 mu g L-1), with highest rates observed in the central polynya where Chl a and particulate organic carbon (POC) were greatest. The highest BP rates exceeded those reported for the Ross Sea or any other Antarctic coastal system, yet the BP: NPP ratio (2.1-9.4%) was relatively low. Bacterial respiration was also high, and growth efficiency (2-27%; median = 10%) was similar to oligotrophic systems. Thus, the integrated bacterial carbon demand (0.8-2.8 g C m(-2) d(-1)) was a high fraction (25-128%; median = 43%) of NPP during bloom development. During peak bloom, activity was particle-associated: BP and EEA correlated well with POC, and size fractionation experiments showed that the larger size fraction (> 3 mu m) accounted for a majority (similar to 75%) of the BP. The community was psychrophilic, with a 5x reduction in BP when warmed to 20 degrees C. In deeper waters, respiration remained relatively high, likely fueled by the significant downward particle flux in the region. A highly active, particle-associated, heterotrophic microbial community clearly responded to the extraordinary phytoplankton bloom in the ASP, likely limiting biological pump efficiency during the early season.

Between-litter variation in developmental studies of hormones and behavior: Inflated false positives and diminished power2017In: Frontiers in neuroendocrinology (Print), ISSN 0091-3022, E-ISSN 1095-6808, Vol. 47, p. 154-166Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Developmental studies of hormones and behavior often include littermates—rodent siblings that share early-life experiences and genes. Due to between-litter variation (i.e., litter effects), the statistical assumption of independent observations is untenable. In two literatures—natural variation in maternal care and prenatal stress—entire litters are categorized based on maternal behavior or experimental condition. Here, we (1) review both literatures; (2) simulate false positive rates for commonly used statistical methods in each literature; and (3) characterize small sample performance of multilevel models (MLM) and generalized estimating equations (GEE). We found that the assumption of independence was routinely violated (>85%), false positives (α = 0.05) exceeded nominal levels (up to 0.70), and power (1−β) rarely surpassed 0.80 (even for optimistic sample and effect sizes). Additionally, we show that MLMs and GEEs have adequate performance for common research designs. We discuss implications for the extant literature, the field of behavioral neuroendocrinology, and provide recommendations.

“The Librarian – a literary motif”

This thesis deals with the topic of information management by studying the librarian in three texts: “The Library of Babel” by Jorge Luis Borges, Anders and Dafne by Göran Hägg, and Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson). In Hägg’s novel the librarian is a form of AI, who guides the information seeker by linking together quotations from relevant literature. In Stephenson’s novel the librarian is a program that gathers and evaluates information from the Internet. Finally in “The Library of Babel” the librarian is a disillusioned figure, lost in an ocean of information. The conclusion of the essay is that we need a librarian in the information society, and the librarian’s future form will find examples and warnings in the selected texts. The librarian’s role is to identify, acquire, preserve and evaluate information. Borges’ librarian fails in this, fulfilling only part of the librarian’s role – the gathering and preservation, but he is unable to distinguish relevant texts from nonsense. Hägg’s librarian is at the same time a digital library, similar to Wikipedia, and works by linking texts together to create knowledge. She manages to collect, preserve and make information available through her system of hyperlinks. Stephenson’s librarian is the perfect librarian. Besides preserving information, he gathers relevant information quickly and efficiently, organizes it and makes it available. He is created in the form of a human, and one of the conclusions of this thesis is that this mimicking of interpersonal communication improves the transfer of information.

Endemicity and climatic niche differentiation in three marine ciliated protists2018In: Limnology and Oceanography, ISSN 0024-3590, E-ISSN 1939-5590, Vol. 63, no 6, p. 2727-2736Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The biogeographic pattern of single-celled eukaryotes (protists), including ciliates, is poorly understood. Most marine species are believed to have a relatively high dispersal potential, such that both globally distributed and geographically isolated taxa exist. Primary occurrence data for three large, easily identified ciliate species, Parafavella gigantea, Schmidingerella serrata, and Zoothamnium pelagicum, and environmental data drawn from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's World Ocean Atlas were used to estimate each species' spatial and environmental distributions using Maxent v3.3.3k. The predictive power of the models was tested with a series of spatial stratification studies, which were evaluated using partial receiver operating characteristic (ROC) statistics. Differences between niches occupied by each taxon were evaluated using background similarity tests. All predictions showed significant ability to anticipate test points. The null hypotheses of niche similarity were rejected in all background similarity tests comparing the niches among the three species. This article provides the first quantitative assessment of environmental conditions associated with three species of ciliates and a first estimate of their spatial distributions in the North Atlantic, which can serve as a benchmark against which to document distributional shifts. These species follow consistent, predictable patterns related to climate and environmental biochemistry; the importance of climatic conditions as regards protist distributions is noteworthy considering the effects of global climate change.

Molecular identification of papillomavirus in ducks2018In: Scientific Reports, ISSN 2045-2322, E-ISSN 2045-2322, Vol. 8, article id 9096Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Papillomaviruses infect many vertebrates, including birds. Persistent infections by some strains can cause malignant proliferation of cells (i.e. cancer), though more typically infections cause benign tumours, or may be completely subclinical. Sometimes extensive, persistent tumours are recorded-notably in chaffinches and humans. In 2016, a novel papillomavirus genotype was characterized from a duck faecal microbiome, in Bhopal, India; the sixth papillomavirus genotype from birds. Prompted by this finding, we screened 160 cloacal swabs and 968 faecal samples collected from 299 ducks sampled at Ottenby Bird Observatory, Sweden in 2015, using a newly designed real-time PCR. Twenty one samples (1.9%) from six individuals (2%) were positive. Eighteen sequences were identical to the published genotype, duck papillomavirus 1. One additional novel genotype was recovered from three samples. Both genotypes were recovered from a wild strain domestic mallard that was infected for more than 60 days with each genotype. All positive individuals were adult (P = 0.004). Significantly more positive samples were detected from swabs than faecal samples (P < 0.0001). Sample type data suggests transmission may be via direct contact, and only infrequently, via the oral-faecal route. Infection in only adult birds supports the hypothesis that this virus is sexually transmitted, though more work is required to verify this.

The interactive effects of stratospheric ozone depletion, UV radiation, and climate change on aquatic ecosystems2019In: Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences, ISSN 1474-905X, E-ISSN 1474-9092, Vol. 18, no 3, p. 717-746Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This assessment summarises the current state of knowledge on the interactive effects of ozone depletion and climate change on aquatic ecosystems, focusing on how these affect exposures to UV radiation in both inland and oceanic waters. The ways in which stratospheric ozone depletion is directly altering climate in the southern hemisphere and the consequent extensive effects on aquatic ecosystems are also addressed. The primary objective is to synthesise novel findings over the past four years in the context of the existing understanding of ecosystem response to UV radiation and the interactive effects of climate change. If it were not for the Montreal Protocol, stratospheric ozone depletion would have led to high levels of exposure to solar UV radiation with much stronger negative effects on all trophic levels in aquatic ecosystems than currently experienced in both inland and oceanic waters. This “world avoided” scenario that has curtailed ozone depletion, means that climate change and other environmental variables will play the primary role in regulating the exposure of aquatic organisms to solar UV radiation. Reductions in the thickness and duration of snow and ice cover are increasing the levels of exposure of aquatic organisms to UV radiation. Climate change was also expected to increase exposure by causing shallow mixed layers, but new data show deepening in some regions and shoaling in others. In contrast, climate-change related increases in heavy precipitation and melting of glaciers and permafrost are increasing the concentration and colour of UV-absorbing dissolved organic matter (DOM) and particulates. This is leading to the “browning” of many inland and coastal waters, with consequent loss of the valuable ecosystem service in which solar UV radiation disinfects surface waters of parasites and pathogens. Many organisms can reduce damage due to exposure to UV radiation through behavioural avoidance, photoprotection, and photoenzymatic repair, but meta-analyses continue to confirm negative effects of UV radiation across all trophic levels. Modeling studies estimating photoinhibition of primary production in parts of the Pacific Ocean have demonstrated that the UV radiation component of sunlight leads to a 20% decrease in estimates of primary productivity. Exposure to UV radiation can also lead to positive effects on some organisms by damaging less UV-tolerant predators, competitors, and pathogens. UV radiation also contributes to the formation of microplastic pollutants and interacts with artificial sunscreens and other pollutants with adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. Exposure to UV-B radiation can decrease the toxicity of some pollutants such as methyl mercury (due to its role in demethylation) but increase the toxicity of other pollutants such as some pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Feeding on microplastics by zooplankton can lead to bioaccumulation in fish. Microplastics are found in up to 20% of fish marketed for human consumption, potentially threatening food security. Depletion of stratospheric ozone has altered climate in the southern hemisphere in ways that have increased oceanic productivity and consequently the growth, survival and reproduction of many sea birds and mammals. In contrast, warmer sea surface temperatures related to these climate shifts are also correlated with declines in both kelp beds in Tasmania and corals in Brazil. This assessment demonstrates that knowledge of the interactive effects of ozone depletion, UV radiation, and climate change factors on aquatic ecosystems has advanced considerably over the past four years and confirms the importance of considering synergies between environmental factors.

    Abstract [en]

The field of gender studies has shed a new light on environmental issues and given the possibility to inquire how men and women respectively perceive and address sustainability. Studies have shown that women tend to have a favourable attitude towards the environment whereas men are less driven in environmental questions. Consequently, this study has conducted a hypothesis to further the correlation between gender and sustainability by examining attitudes of young adults. The study seeks to prove the hypothesis, compare the differentiated attitudes of each gender to those of older adults and finally put the results in perspective by reviewing its scientific importance. The study uses a postal survey conducted for the purpose to disclose Swedish attitudes towards the environment. The results prove the hypothesis to be in accordance with reality and show a distinguished divide between young adults based on their gender roles. Young women display attitudes more favourable towards sustainability than young men and the overall differences between young adults based on their gender roles correspond with the differences between older adults. Furthermore, the study is in dialogue with its research field by demonstrating the values of Swedish sustainability and the Swedish welfare society, and advancing the correlation between gender and environment whilst also reminding the scope of research of the significance of young people’s attitudes in social and political contexts.

Physical and psychosocial effects related to sleep inchildren with neurodevelopmental disorders: A study of the relationship between motor proficiency, sleep efficiency and possible influencing factors2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between sleep patterns, motor proficiency and commonly co-occurring neurodevelopmental disorders in children, attitude to physical activity, mental health, and age. The study also looked at differences in sleep efficiency, as well as, perceived adequacy in physical activity between typically developing children and children with low motor proficiency. The sample consisted of 127 participants, 6-12 years old living in Perth, Western Australia. 51% participants were considered typically developing and 49% to have low motor proficiency. Motor proficiency, indications of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder and anxiety/depression, adequacy in, or predilection for physical activity did not show a relationship to sleep efficiency. Significant differences between groups in sleep efficiency or adequacy in physical activity were not found. No interaction effect of neurodevelopmental disorders were identified. Sleep in children with movement impairments caused by neurodevelopmental disorders is an area where continued studies are of great importance. Although no relationship was identified in the current study, previous research has suggested sleep may play an important role for development and optimal everyday functioning. A better understanding of physical and psychological consequences and possible contributing factors of low motor proficiency in childhood is important as the risk of long-term dysfunction in emotional, cognitive and physical areas may be reduced in an optimal environment.

Fysisk aktivitet, motorik och lärande- några förskollärares erfarenheter och förhållningssätt2011Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Det antropocentriskt styrda Sverige: En undersökning om riksdagspartiernas miljöideologiska närings-, miljö- och jordbrukspolitik under mandatperioden 2002-20062014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the environmental ideological direction of the Swedish parliamentary parties through the private members motions directed to the committee of industry and trade and the committee of environment and agriculture during the governmental time from 2002 to 2006.

The environmental ideologies explained is anthropocentrism, ecocentrism and biocentrism. Based on the ideas of these three ideologies main points the private members motions directed to the committee of industry and trade and the committee of environment and agriculture, also matching the search words environment and energy, was compared and analysed.

What has emerged is that all parliamentary parties express a desire to create an energy production and producing guide lines which are stringent environmentally and matches the safety requirements. Although the approach to environmental and safety standards differ significantly between them. Basically all Swedish parliamentary parties are more or less anthropocentric in its arguments, which in short terms means that they estimate natures and animals value through their usability for humans or based on their contribution to human feelings of wellbeing.

The Centre Party and the Green Party shows hints of weak ecocentrism because in many cases they put animal intrinsic value high, but the human value higher. Moderates are predominantly anthropocentric but they also express some hint of biocentrism in one statement concerning research in order to reduce and rebuild environmentally destroyed areas. The Liberals, Conservatives, Social Democrats and the Left Party appears in this study as distinctly anthropocentric.

Att överleva ett plötsligt hjärtstopp: Patienters upplevelser av livet efteråt2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Absolutely amplified: A corpus study of amplifiers, their usage and collocations in two different corpora2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the usage and frequencies of amplifiers in the English language and whether there are differences in usage, collocations and in gender. The material used is the Swedish-English Corpus (SWENC), a collection of Swedish native speaking journalists writing in English, and the Corpus of American Soaps (SOAP), a collection of American soap opera scripts. The size of the two corpora is quite different and therefore the number of tokens varies largely, but by using normalization, the frequencies have been compared. The results show differences in frequency and collocations between the different corpora and the conclusion drawn from this study is that there in fact are some amplifier differences when it comes to gender and collocations.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Since Internet changed how the world communicates the technological development that followed and especially the social medias has meant a change of paradigms in our everyday communication. Even organizations have followed the trend, but for many there is an uncertainty about how social media affects their operations. Especially for our Swedish administrative authorities that have to act according to open records, freedom of speech and the citizen perspective. With this in mind we wanted to study how social medias affect the work with communication to society within a municipality. We therefore have made a qualitative study on Kalmar municipality by interviewing the ones who use Facebook as a work tool and their management. Our main theories are from Kent Asp, Jürgen Habermas and John B. Thompson. We have concluded that Facebook is a meeting place for several types of interaction with possibility to have dialogical mass communication through networks. The media content is a constant flow with mainly phatic communication that for an administrative authority opens up for effective crises communication. The public relations officers role becomes more strategic and the dialogue with the citizens becomes decentralized through increased communication through Facebook. Social medias create a new field of interaction that enhances the public sphere and increases the possibilities for a deliberative democracy. In that way the tendencies for a mediacracy decrease and the administrative authorities power over media increase.

Introduktion av lek och fysisk aktivitet på ett barnhem i Uganda2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study carried out at Linnaeus University in the spring of 2012 where students in a special needs education module problematised the teacher’s mission with the focus on being able to face differences among children in a pedagogical activity. The aim of the study was to make visible how the teaching and learning of values and attitudes can be promoted in educational practice, as well as to examine student views on including values for leisure-time centre work as stated in the target documents. In the study the students were required to observe activities primarily from the perspective of special needs education concepts referred to as categorical and relational. The results of the observations point to a number of concrete professional pedagogical actions that can be linked to a relational special pedagogy approach.

    Abstract [en]

This study presents a development project within pre-school teacher training at Linnaeus University with the purpose to enhance student activity, goal fulfilment and the use of digital media. Empirical data is from an assessment where students were filmed in two steps, the second time by themselves, reflecting on a previously filmed presentation. Student previous knowledge is used as a capacity for self-reflection elaborating meta-cognitive awareness for a future teaching practice. The study uses a relational approach which takes into account both cognitive and emotional aspects of learning. Analyses show an enhanced meta-cognitive awareness of future pedagogical practice manifested at three levels. Students’ strategies vary between being able to act upon established knowledge in a pedagogical practice to be- ing able to stretch into and vision a future practice and discuss consequences for relations and the impact of democratic values in practice. Digital reflections as a didactical tool were by students themselves regarded as supportive for qualitative variations of reflections related to a future professional practice although further precision in task description and framing is probably necessary for a majority to develop an elaborated awareness.

    Abstract [sv]

Swedish upper secondary school teachers’ and students’ views on English textbook usage2014Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Until a decade ago the government controlled the publication and distribution of textbooks, but now it is the teachers’ professional choice and preference that determine whether a textbook should be used or not. Previous research shows that the vast majority of teachers use textbooks in their tuition and that textbooks still have a strong standing in English education. The present study investigated the factors that influence teachers’ choice to use or not to use textbooks, such as the grade and programme they taught, student compositions, fulfilment of policy documents, school finances and personal interest. The students’ views and experiences of textbooks were also included in the research, as well as the extent of students’ influence in the choice of teaching material. The results revealed that most teachers use textbooks in their tuition, but the extent to which they use them differs. The majority of students prefer using textbooks in English, but stress that it is important to mix it with other teaching materials to vary the tuition. However, students appeared to have relatively little influence in the choice of teaching materials. The most influential factor with regards to choosing teaching materials was the teachers’ own personal interest and in some cases finances played an important role. It is the teachers’ individual teaching styles and choices that has the greatest impact on tuition, since the textbooks themselves do not perform the teaching. Thus, the important issue is not necessarily if teachers use textbooks or not, but rather how often and in what way they use them and why. The findings in the present study further suggest that there is reason to believe that teachers would benefit from increasing students’ influence on the choice of teaching materials.

    Abstract [en]

This essay investigates employee buyouts and does so from a number of different perspectives. Employee buyout is a term that describes a way of ending an employment through an agreement where the employee gets a sum of money in exchange of leaving their employment. Technically it is neither a resignation, since the employee gives up the employment in exchange of money, nor a dismissal since the employer does not have legal grounds for dismissing the employee. Employee buyout is not an illegal way to end an employment, as long as it is the result of a mutual agreement between the employer and the employee. In this essay I investigate and analyze employee buyouts in relation to 7 § in the Swedish employment protection act, and also Swedish employment protection in relation to regulations from EU regarding employment protection. Furthermore, I investigate buyouts of employees in the organization of Växjö Municipality, from a gender equality perspective. In this study of Växjö municipality differences shows regarding male and female employees and number of buyouts. In my analysis I try to explain these differences using gender theory and sociolinguistic theory.

    Abstract [en]

Time-series observations are critical to understand the structure, function, and dynamics of marine ecosystems. The Hawaii Ocean Time-series program has maintained near-monthly sampling at Station ALOHA (22°45′N, 158°00′W) in the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG) since 1988 and has identified ecosystem variability over seasonal to interannual timescales. To further extend the temporal resolution of these near-monthly time-series observations, an extensive field campaign was conducted during July-September 2012 at Station ALOHA with near-daily sampling of upper water-column biogeochemistry, phytoplankton abundance, and activity. The resulting data set provided biogeochemical measurements at high temporal resolution and documents two important events at Station ALOHA: (1) a prolonged period of low productivity when net community production in the mixed layer shifted to a net heterotrophic state and (2) detection of a distinct sea-surface salinity minimum feature which was prominent in the upper water column (0-50 m) for a period of approximately 30 days. The shipboard observations during July-September 2012 were supplemented with in situ measurements provided by Seagliders, profiling floats, and remote satellite observations that together revealed the extent of the low productivity and the sea-surface salinity minimum feature in the NPSG.

Design av mobila gränssnitt genom operationalisering av användbarhetsprinciper2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Supplier-Buyer Relationships within the Small-Sized Fashion Retail Industry: A qualitative study of relationship marketing within small-sized fashion retailers in Sweden2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Despite the vast research within the fields of buyer-supplier relationships and the fashion industry, a lack of comprehensive understanding concerning the connection between the two seems to be found. Research regarding long-term relations and key concepts in form of trust and commitment, are stated to be crucial in order to create a long-term relationship. However, the importance of these concepts application regarding small-sized fashion retailers was identified to be an unexplored area; thus, a research gap was detected. This highlights a need for further research of the characteristics of the buyer- supplier relationships within small-sized fashion retailers. The purpose of this study was consequently to investigate buyer-supplier relationships within small-sized fashion retailers. Furthermore, based on the literature review of the theoretical framework, three research questions were formulated. To gather empirical data, a multiple-case study was conducted and semi-structured interviews with four purchasing managers working in the fashion industry were performed.

This study discloses that the concepts of trust and commitment were identified as being of great importance, in order to maintain a long-term relationship between the parties. Further, several factors, e.g. communication, conflict resolution and identification were distinguished to have a significant impact on the character of a close relationship.

Finally this study concluded that the relation between the buyer and supplier is highly valued; with especially trust as a key factor. Both affective and calculative commitment was identified to exist, often depending on the size and dependence of the supplier. However, the prosperity of the business was ultimately argued to be the main reason for maintaining a partnership. Hence, the retailers preferred a close relationship, but sometimes accepted a transactional one due to their own customer demand.

DISRESPECTED: a study concerning the journalist profession in Kosovo: corrupt employers, unfair working conditions and forgotten journalistic ideals.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate how the journalist profession is challenged when the media in Kosovo is intruded by political and business interests and what happens to television journalists and editors; professionals who fight for their right to produce news. The intention with the study is to describe, discuss and analyze the results found in this study around the obstacles faced within the journalist profession in Kosovo caused by the intrusion of political and business interests in journalistic work. One has to also consider that Kosovo is a new state, having weak mechanisms for protecting the rights of journalists and editors.

Research method: In this study, the qualitative interview has been used as research method to collect empirical data and to get an idea of the personal experiences of Kosovo journalists.

Limitations: This study does not present an investigation into the Kosovo media landscape as a whole and does not give other parties involved in journalistic work (for example media owners, politicians and advertisers) the opportunity to express their views. Further, the voices of rural journalists and editors are not included. Finally, interviewees mainly work as television journalists and editors, reflecting the fact that media consumption in Kosovo is almost exclusively by viewing television.

Results: Results suggest that Kosovo journalists and editors are held back in their profession due to political and economical influence on their work. This is carried out in the form of threats and blackmailing in which an external political or economical force personally threats the journalist or editor or threats to pull back financial support unless positive media coverage in a specific media is delivered. Journalists and editors are thus not able to carry out their role as watchdogs and are put in a position in which they feel unsafe and disrespected.

Suggestions for future research: For future research, it would be interesting to look into “the other side” of the media, i.e. advertisers, political elite and media companies in Kosovo. A more comprehensive study could maybe shed a broader light on the Kosovo media problems and possibly find some solutions for the future of the existing problems. It can also be interesting to look at international interference in the journalist profession in Kosovo.

A non-stationary model for sulphur aerosol depletion and deposition in a young spruce stand1985In: Tellus. Series B, Chemical and physical meteorology, ISSN 0280-6509, E-ISSN 1600-0889, Vol. 37B, p. 230-242Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A non-stationary partial differential equation (pde) of aerosol concentration in one space coordinate z (height above ground) is given. Submodels for the structure and aerodynamics of a young Norway spruce stand (height ∼6 m) are developed from site-specific empirical data during a dry, stagnant summer period. The submodels and an empirical time series over 120 h for above-stand sulphur aerosol concentrations are used to quantify the pde and its upper boundary conditions. A simplified analysis indicates an uncertainty within one order of magnitude associated with this step. The pde-predictions of within-stand concentrations are within a factor of 2 of corresponding empirical concentration data. The associated deposition patterns show a diurnal variation and a complex z-dependency. Model improvements and further evaluation methods are suggested. The overall results suggest that estimates of aerosol deposition to forests based only on yearly and regional averages overlook strongly time and space dependent deposition patterns.

Designing resource systems for sustainability: safe-fail versus fail-safe strategies1992In: Society and the environment: a Swedish research perspective / [ed] Uno Svedin and Britt Hägerhäll Aniansson, Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1992, 1, p. 23-45Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The complexity of natural systems opens up new risk perspectives for resource utilization, but also new opportunities. Efficient use of renewable resources, and of carbon-sequestering techno-ecology, can be combined into aggregates. These aggregates could be designed to contribute to safe-failing environmental futures. Tactical and strategical ecological engineering, however, invokes crucial questions of an intangible character. These include accounting for attitudes towards nature so as to render possible local-specific, culturally acceptable and ‘bottom-up’ tailor-made designs of multiple-use and flexible resource systems. Indicators of progress with respect to sustainable development will have to be formulated for use on the local, regional and global scale. Such indicators would benefit from adopting non-conventional perceptions, aimed at tracking resource-use efficiency, and at recognizing the stabilizing as well as destabilizing qualities of the complexity provided by ecological systems.
