En utredning gällande optimering av en drivlinsupphängning med avseende på kostnad och vikt2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Swedish upper secondary school teachers’ and students’ views on English textbook usage2014Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Until a decade ago the government controlled the publication and distribution of textbooks, but now it is the teachers’ professional choice and preference that determine whether a textbook should be used or not. Previous research shows that the vast majority of teachers use textbooks in their tuition and that textbooks still have a strong standing in English education. The present study investigated the factors that influence teachers’ choice to use or not to use textbooks, such as the grade and programme they taught, student compositions, fulfilment of policy documents, school finances and personal interest. The students’ views and experiences of textbooks were also included in the research, as well as the extent of students’ influence in the choice of teaching material. The results revealed that most teachers use textbooks in their tuition, but the extent to which they use them differs. The majority of students prefer using textbooks in English, but stress that it is important to mix it with other teaching materials to vary the tuition. However, students appeared to have relatively little influence in the choice of teaching materials. The most influential factor with regards to choosing teaching materials was the teachers’ own personal interest and in some cases finances played an important role. It is the teachers’ individual teaching styles and choices that has the greatest impact on tuition, since the textbooks themselves do not perform the teaching. Thus, the important issue is not necessarily if teachers use textbooks or not, but rather how often and in what way they use them and why. The findings in the present study further suggest that there is reason to believe that teachers would benefit from increasing students’ influence on the choice of teaching materials.

    Abstract [en]

This essay investigates employee buyouts and does so from a number of different perspectives. Employee buyout is a term that describes a way of ending an employment through an agreement where the employee gets a sum of money in exchange of leaving their employment. Technically it is neither a resignation, since the employee gives up the employment in exchange of money, nor a dismissal since the employer does not have legal grounds for dismissing the employee. Employee buyout is not an illegal way to end an employment, as long as it is the result of a mutual agreement between the employer and the employee. In this essay I investigate and analyze employee buyouts in relation to 7 § in the Swedish employment protection act, and also Swedish employment protection in relation to regulations from EU regarding employment protection. Furthermore, I investigate buyouts of employees in the organization of Växjö Municipality, from a gender equality perspective. In this study of Växjö municipality differences shows regarding male and female employees and number of buyouts. In my analysis I try to explain these differences using gender theory and sociolinguistic theory.

Short-term variability in euphotic zone biogeochemistry and primary productivity at Station ALOHA: A case study of summer 20122015In: Global Biogeochemical Cycles, ISSN 0886-6236, E-ISSN 1944-9224, Vol. 29, no 8, p. 1145-1164Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Time-series observations are critical to understand the structure, function, and dynamics of marine ecosystems. The Hawaii Ocean Time-series program has maintained near-monthly sampling at Station ALOHA (22°45′N, 158°00′W) in the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG) since 1988 and has identified ecosystem variability over seasonal to interannual timescales. To further extend the temporal resolution of these near-monthly time-series observations, an extensive field campaign was conducted during July-September 2012 at Station ALOHA with near-daily sampling of upper water-column biogeochemistry, phytoplankton abundance, and activity. The resulting data set provided biogeochemical measurements at high temporal resolution and documents two important events at Station ALOHA: (1) a prolonged period of low productivity when net community production in the mixed layer shifted to a net heterotrophic state and (2) detection of a distinct sea-surface salinity minimum feature which was prominent in the upper water column (0-50 m) for a period of approximately 30 days. The shipboard observations during July-September 2012 were supplemented with in situ measurements provided by Seagliders, profiling floats, and remote satellite observations that together revealed the extent of the low productivity and the sea-surface salinity minimum feature in the NPSG.

Design av mobila gränssnitt genom operationalisering av användbarhetsprinciper2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Supplier-Buyer Relationships within the Small-Sized Fashion Retail Industry: A qualitative study of relationship marketing within small-sized fashion retailers in Sweden2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Despite the vast research within the fields of buyer-supplier relationships and the fashion industry, a lack of comprehensive understanding concerning the connection between the two seems to be found. Research regarding long-term relations and key concepts in form of trust and commitment, are stated to be crucial in order to create a long-term relationship. However, the importance of these concepts application regarding small-sized fashion retailers was identified to be an unexplored area; thus, a research gap was detected. This highlights a need for further research of the characteristics of the buyer- supplier relationships within small-sized fashion retailers. The purpose of this study was consequently to investigate buyer-supplier relationships within small-sized fashion retailers. Furthermore, based on the literature review of the theoretical framework, three research questions were formulated. To gather empirical data, a multiple-case study was conducted and semi-structured interviews with four purchasing managers working in the fashion industry were performed.

This study discloses that the concepts of trust and commitment were identified as being of great importance, in order to maintain a long-term relationship between the parties. Further, several factors, e.g. communication, conflict resolution and identification were distinguished to have a significant impact on the character of a close relationship.

Finally this study concluded that the relation between the buyer and supplier is highly valued; with especially trust as a key factor. Both affective and calculative commitment was identified to exist, often depending on the size and dependence of the supplier. However, the prosperity of the business was ultimately argued to be the main reason for maintaining a partnership. Hence, the retailers preferred a close relationship, but sometimes accepted a transactional one due to their own customer demand.

DISRESPECTED: a study concerning the journalist profession in Kosovo: corrupt employers, unfair working conditions and forgotten journalistic ideals.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate how the journalist profession is challenged when the media in Kosovo is intruded by political and business interests and what happens to television journalists and editors; professionals who fight for their right to produce news. The intention with the study is to describe, discuss and analyze the results found in this study around the obstacles faced within the journalist profession in Kosovo caused by the intrusion of political and business interests in journalistic work. One has to also consider that Kosovo is a new state, having weak mechanisms for protecting the rights of journalists and editors.

Research method: In this study, the qualitative interview has been used as research method to collect empirical data and to get an idea of the personal experiences of Kosovo journalists.

Limitations: This study does not present an investigation into the Kosovo media landscape as a whole and does not give other parties involved in journalistic work (for example media owners, politicians and advertisers) the opportunity to express their views. Further, the voices of rural journalists and editors are not included. Finally, interviewees mainly work as television journalists and editors, reflecting the fact that media consumption in Kosovo is almost exclusively by viewing television.

Results: Results suggest that Kosovo journalists and editors are held back in their profession due to political and economical influence on their work. This is carried out in the form of threats and blackmailing in which an external political or economical force personally threats the journalist or editor or threats to pull back financial support unless positive media coverage in a specific media is delivered. Journalists and editors are thus not able to carry out their role as watchdogs and are put in a position in which they feel unsafe and disrespected.

Suggestions for future research: For future research, it would be interesting to look into “the other side” of the media, i.e. advertisers, political elite and media companies in Kosovo. A more comprehensive study could maybe shed a broader light on the Kosovo media problems and possibly find some solutions for the future of the existing problems. It can also be interesting to look at international interference in the journalist profession in Kosovo.

A non-stationary model for sulphur aerosol depletion and deposition in a young spruce stand1985In: Tellus. Series B, Chemical and physical meteorology, ISSN 0280-6509, E-ISSN 1600-0889, Vol. 37B, p. 230-242Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A non-stationary partial differential equation (pde) of aerosol concentration in one space coordinate z (height above ground) is given. Submodels for the structure and aerodynamics of a young Norway spruce stand (height ∼6 m) are developed from site-specific empirical data during a dry, stagnant summer period. The submodels and an empirical time series over 120 h for above-stand sulphur aerosol concentrations are used to quantify the pde and its upper boundary conditions. A simplified analysis indicates an uncertainty within one order of magnitude associated with this step. The pde-predictions of within-stand concentrations are within a factor of 2 of corresponding empirical concentration data. The associated deposition patterns show a diurnal variation and a complex z-dependency. Model improvements and further evaluation methods are suggested. The overall results suggest that estimates of aerosol deposition to forests based only on yearly and regional averages overlook strongly time and space dependent deposition patterns.

Designing resource systems for sustainability: safe-fail versus fail-safe strategies1992In: Society and the environment: a Swedish research perspective / [ed] Uno Svedin and Britt Hägerhäll Aniansson, Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1992, 1, p. 23-45Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The complexity of natural systems opens up new risk perspectives for resource utilization, but also new opportunities. Efficient use of renewable resources, and of carbon-sequestering techno-ecology, can be combined into aggregates. These aggregates could be designed to contribute to safe-failing environmental futures. Tactical and strategical ecological engineering, however, invokes crucial questions of an intangible character. These include accounting for attitudes towards nature so as to render possible local-specific, culturally acceptable and ‘bottom-up’ tailor-made designs of multiple-use and flexible resource systems. Indicators of progress with respect to sustainable development will have to be formulated for use on the local, regional and global scale. Such indicators would benefit from adopting non-conventional perceptions, aimed at tracking resource-use efficiency, and at recognizing the stabilizing as well as destabilizing qualities of the complexity provided by ecological systems.

Aerosol characteristics and aerodynamic conditions above and insideforests are strongly dynamic, especially for landscapes subject to frequent frontal activityand episodic anthropogenic aerosol inflows. Using empirical data of 1-hr time- resolutiona non-stationary partial differential equation model (based on K-theory and classicalfiltration theory for concentration and deposition variations in a forest) is shownreasonably capable of handling such temporal complexity, which is also shown to bereflected in a temporally complex deposition pattern.

    Abstract [en]

Theoretical as well as empirical reevaluations of nature are occurring in response to failures to predict environmental changes, recent developments in systems theory, and new research into environmental attitudes. At present, holistic concepts in ecological theory are marked by dissension, and environmental policy is beset with turmoil — both situations are due in part to differing perceptions of the role of complexity in natural systems. This article identifies and analyses links between changing scientific perspectives on nature and emerging perceptions of environmental policies. It is argued that because society faces basic uncertainty in predicting environmental futures, it is time to formulate a fundamentally new risk philosophy, complementary interdisciplinary management approaches, and a more modern attitude towards efficient and renewable resource systems.

    Abstract [en]

A system of partial differential equations is developed to describe an aerosol entering from an open field into a downwind forest, where deposition and turbulent transfer affect particle concentration. The model considers the interplay between forest structure, open field and forest aerodynamics and aerosol characteristics. The modelling problem is broken down into a set of simpler submodels which can be refined or simplified individually. Model results suggest, basically, significant horizontal (vertical) depletion of super-μm particles downwind from the forest edge (downwards from the canopy top). Distinct edge effects in deposition rates are common. In certain cases vertical exchange processes predominate, leading to enrichment of the aerosol. Sub-μm particles (unless extremely small) are subject to almost negligible depletion and edge effects. Deposition of super-μm particle oriented aerosols are governed by a complex interaction between particle size, forest structure and aerodynamics whereas deposition of sub-μm particles is simply controlled by particle concentration and forest structure. Under certain conditions (dense homogenous forests) aerosol particle concentration across the open field to forest roughness transition increases again after initial depletion.

Aerosol concentration profiles within a mature coniferous forest - model versus field results1985In: Atmospheric Environment, ISSN 1352-2310, E-ISSN 1873-2844, Vol. 19, no 2, p. 363-367Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aerosol mass concentration profiles along a horizontal and a vertical transect in a forest are modelled from field site information on aerosol particle size distributions, forest structure and aerodynamics. Model outputs are compared with concentration profiles obtained from field measurements at the site. The comparisons suggest that model properties are qualitatively valid. Though field data are insufficient for a systematic quantitative test of model behaviour, the investigation does not indicate any quantitatively fundamental model deficiencies.
