Verifiering av metod för analys av tumörmarkörerna CA 125, CA 15-3 och CA 19-9 på Roche Cobas e4112014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Investigating the Path from Firm Innovativeness to Financial Performance: The Roles of New Product Success, Market Responsiveness, and Environment Turbulence2016In: Journal of Small Business Strategy, ISSN 1081-8510, Vol. 26, no 1, p. 51-68Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This resource-based study investigates how a path from firm innovativeness to financial performance is channelled through new product success, and is contingent upon levels of market responsiveness and environment turbulence. Using primary data from small- and medium-sized exporting firms in the United Kingdom, the study finds that new product success partially mediates the path from firm innovativeness to financial performance. The study further finds that while market responsiveness strengthens links between new product success and financial performance, environment turbulence weakens the relationship. The implications of these findings for both researchers and managers of small- and medium-size enterprises are discussed.

Utvärdering av pelletsförgasning för glassmältning: Fullskaleexperiment vid Kosta glasbruk våren 20042004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The negative environmental impact of the consumption of fossil fuels has led to an increased claim for a wider use of renewable energy sources. Biomass appears as a particularly promising option. This project demonstrates the possibility to heat glass furnaces with gas from biofuel gasification combusted without visible flames. By better technique you can both retain production and reduce nitrogenoxide emissions with economical benefit. The biofuel doesn’t contribute to the greenhouse effect. A part of the whole project is the experiments performed on June 1st 2004 in Kosta glass- factory, total 7 hours and 50 minutes. A major effort of this diploma work is to evaluate mass and energy balances of the down – draft fixed bed gasifier used in the experiments.

Bat species richness and activity in forest habitats close to lakes versus far from lakes,  in Sweden2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The long-term effects of large-scale changes in forestry, agriculture and other land use on habitats and the large-scale expansion of wind farming  affects bats foraging environments. In order to predict consequences of exploitations on local bat species and populations, good surveys are important. To get good background information for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) it  is crucial to rapidly assess which areas are most important for bats. The aim of this work was to measure the importance of the two types of forest environment for bats foraging : forest areas located close to or far from the lakes. Bat activity and species diversity was measured with automatic ultrasound recorders in 211  nights of fieldwork at 155 locations in 23 areas in different parts of Sweden during June, July and the first two weeks of August 2011 and 2012. A total of 11 species were recorded in forest far from lakes and 8 species in forest close to lakes. Eptesicus nilssonii , Myotis sp. and Pipistrellus pygmaeus were the most common taxa in both habitat types. Activity levels were higher in the vicinity of lakes compared to forests far away from lakes. Species diversity calculated on base on Chao 2 was similar for both types of habitats . The results suggest that the forests close to lakes are the most important habitats to surveys for bats in Sweden and that inventory efforts should be primarily invested in them.

Derivation of the Lindblad Equation for Open Quantum Systems and Its Application to Mathematical  Modeling of the Process of Decision Making2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the theory of open quantum systems, a quantum Markovian master equation, the Lindblad equation, reveals the most general form for the generators of a quantum dynamical semigroup. In this thesis, we present the derivation of the Lindblad equation and several examples of Lindblad equations with their analytic and numerical solutions. The graphs of the numerical solutions illuminate the dynamics and the stabilization as time increases. The corresponding von Neumann entropies are also presented as graphs. Moreover, to illustrate the difference between the dynamics of open and isolated systems, we prove two theorems about the conditions for stabilization of the solutions of the von Neumann equation which describes the dynamics of the density matrix of open quantum systems. It shows that the von Neumann equation is not satisfied for modelling dynamics in the cognitive contextin general. Instead, we use the Lindblad equation to model the mental dynamics of the players in the game of the 2-player prisoner’s dilemma to explain the irrational behaviors of the players. The stabilizing solution will lead the mental dynamics to an equilibrium state, which is regarded as the termination of the comparison process for a decision maker. The resulting pure strategy is selected probabilistically by performing a quantum measurement. We also discuss two important concepts, quantum decoherence and quantum Darwinism. Finally, we mention a classical Neural Network Master Equation introduced by Cowan and plan our further works on an analogous version for the quantum neural network by using the Lindblad equation.

Ambient temperatures differently influence colour morphs of the leaf beetle Chrysomela lapponica: roles of thermal melanism and developmental plasticity2018In: Journal of Thermal Biology, ISSN 0306-4565, E-ISSN 1879-0992, Vol. 74, p. 100-109Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We asked whether ambient temperatures can affect morph frequencies within a subarctic population of thepolymorphic leaf beetle Chrysomela lapponica through thermal melanism and/or developmental plasticity. Bodytemperature increased faster in beetles of dark morph than in beetles of light morph under exposure to artificialirradiation. Dark males ran faster than light males in both field and laboratory experiments, and this differencedecreased with increasing ambient air temperature, from significant at 10 °C to non-significant at 20 °C and26 °C. On cold days (6–14 °C), significantly more dark males than light males were found on their host plants incopula (40.8% and 27.3% respectively); on warm days (15–22 °C) this difference disappeared. Light femalesproduced twice as many eggs as dark females; this difference did not depend on the ambient temperature. Theproportion of dark morphs in the progenies of pairs with one dark parent was twice as high as that in theprogenies of pairs in which both parents were light, and this proportion was greater when larvae developed atlow (10 and 15 °C) than at high (20 and 25 °C) temperatures. We conclude that low temperatures may increasethe frequencies of dark morphs in C. lapponica populations due to both the mating advantages of dark males overlight males and developmental plasticity. Variation in frequencies of low-fecund dark morphs in the population, caused by among-year differences in temperature together with density-dependent selection, may contribute tothe evolutionary dynamics of the colour polymorphism and may influence abundance fluctuations in these leafbeetle populations.

Opposite latitudinal patterns for bird and arthropod predation revealed in experiments with differently colored artificial prey2019In: Ecology and Evolution, ISSN 2045-7758, E-ISSN 2045-7758, Vol. 9, no 24, p. 14273-14285Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The strength of biotic interactions is generally thought to increase toward the equator, but support for this hypothesis is contradictory. We explored whether predator attacks on artificial prey of eight different colors vary among climates and whether this variation affects the detection of latitudinal patterns in predation. Bird attack rates negatively correlated with model luminance in cold and temperate environments, but not in tropical environments. Bird predation on black and on white (extremes in luminance) models demonstrated different latitudinal patterns, presumably due to differences in prey conspicuousness between habitats with different light regimes. When attacks on models of all colors were combined, arthropod predation decreased, whereas bird predation increased with increasing latitude. We conclude that selection for prey coloration may vary geographically and according to predator identity, and that the importance of different predators may show contrasting patterns, thus weakening the overall latitudinal trend in top-down control of herbivorous insects.

High bacterial 16S rRNA gene diversity above the atmospheric boundary layer2012In: Aerobiologia, ISSN 0393-5965, E-ISSN 1573-3025, Vol. 28, no 4, p. 481-498Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The atmosphere is host to an omnipresent bacterial community that may influence fundamental atmospheric processes such as cloud formation and precipitation onset. Knowledge of this bacterial community is scarce, particularly in air masses relevant to cloud formation. Using a light aircraft, we sampled above the atmospheric boundary layer-that is, at heights at which cloud condensation occurs-over coastal areas of Sweden and Denmark in summer 2009. Enumeration indicated total bacterial numbers of 4 x 10(1) to 1.8 x 10(3) m(-3) air and colony-forming units of 0-6 bacteria m(-3) air. 16S rRNA gene libraries constructed from samples collected above the Baltic Sea coast revealed a highly diverse bacterial community dominated by species belonging to the genera Sphingomonas and Pseudomonas. Bacterial species known to carry ice-nucleating proteins were found in several samples. Modeled back trajectories suggested the potential sources of the sampled bacteria to be diverse geographic regions, including both marine and terrestrial environments in the northern hemisphere. Several samples contained 16S rRNA genes from plant chloroplasts, confirming a terrestrial contribution to these samples. Interestingly, the airborne bacterial community displayed an apparent seasonal succession that we tentatively ascribe to in situ succession in the atmosphere.

Translating terms and cultural aspects from English to Swedish in a social scientific text about gastronomy2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present study deals with the translation of a text about tourism and gastronomy. The analysis focuses on the translation of cultural words and terminology. The aim of the study was to analyse the translation problems that may arise in an academic text dealing with tourism and gastronomy, and see what strategies are usable to handle these problems. The translation strategies that are used in the analysis are Vinay & Darbelnet’s (2008) and Newmark’s (1988). A number of different translation problems were addressed, for instance how to deal with borrowings and with cultural adaptations.

    Abstract

    Title:

A qualitative study of unaccompanied refugee children and our experiences of the reception in Nybro and Växjö municipality.

    Authors:

    Gjelbrim Zymeri and Karolina Kielek

Each year, a large number of unaccompanied young people arrive in Sweden. Immigration Service statistics show that in 2010 the majority of thesewere boys from Afghanistan, Somalia or Iraq. The purpose of this study was to analyze the reception of such young people in two municipalities, Växjö and Nybro, based on the experiences of the personnel involved and of the unaccompanied children themselves and children’s living conditions.

The method chosen was qualitative interviews, with analysis of results using communication theory and identity theory. We present results that reflect what we considered to be the important themes emerging from our interviews. These themes are:

the children's background, relationships, children's experiences on the need for support and assistance, health care, children's experiences of living, schooling, the importance of language, cultural distinctions. The result of our study shows that the relationships for unaccompanied children is very important for their future, but cultural clashes makes the relationships difficult. A conclusion is that unaccompanied children are in need of help for some time after they arrived in to the municipality. The results also showes that most young enlisted the help of staff at the homes and that the Swedish language is essential for the unaccompanied children to make them independent. These results are broadly consistent with previous research in this subject

    Abstract [en]

International new ventures (INVs) from high tech industry in developing economies need international markets in order to survive and/or develop their business activities. INVs have utilized their bonding social capital to overcome their liabilities and success in foreign market. In this study we focus on Costa Rican software firms who have took advantage of the immigrants in their CORs (diaspora) that generates bonding and bridging social capital to enter to international markets, particularly in US market. The case study analyses of four companies suggest that bonding social capital originating from diaspora enables INVs to implement lower and more inexpensive modes of entry and bridging social capital enables originating from other ties them to increase the sales in foreign market. The influences of the diaspora on social capital provoke a positive change on firms’ performance. © 2019, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

Allo-parental care in Damaraland mole-rats is female biased and age dependent, though independent of testosterone levels2018In: Physiology and Behavior, ISSN 0031-9384, E-ISSN 1873-507X, Vol. 193, p. 149-153Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In Damaraland mole-rats (Fukomys damal-ensis), non-breeding subordinates contribute to the care of offspring born to the breeding pair in their group by carrying and retrieving young to the nest. In social mole-rats and some cooperative breeders, dominant females show unusually high testosterone levels and it has been suggested that high testosterone levels may increase reproductive and aggressive behavior and reduce investment in allo-parental and parental care, generating age and state-dependent variation in behavior. Here we show that, in Damaraland mole-rats, allo-parental care in males and females is unaffected by experimental increases in testosterone levels. Pup carrying decreases with age of the non-breeding helper while the change in social status from non-breeder to breeder has contrasting effects in the two sexes. Female breeders were more likely than female non-breeders to carry pups but male breeders were less likely to carry pups than male non-breeders, increasing the sex bias in parental care compared to allo-parental care. Our results indicate that testosterone is unlikely to be an important regulator of allo-parental care in mole-rats.

Den nya F-gasförordningens påverkan på kylbranschen2015Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As of 1 January 2015, the new F -Gas Regulation, the EU / 57/ 2014, will apply. This means that leak detection intervals will change and that old refrigerants will be phased out and replaced by new ones. The purpose of this paper was to find out how the refrigeration sector was affected by the new F-Gas Regulation. To find out, three representatives from the refrigeration sector were interviewed to share their views on the situation. Topics covered were: How will the refrigeration sector manage a possible increased workload, do the entrepreneurs have the knowledge needed for the future, will there be cost increases and what will the future refrigerants be? To summarize, the refrigeration sector believes that they are, after some supplementary courses, well prepared and that there will be no significant increase in workload and that possible cost increases will mainly be on the user.

PMS för SME: - En studie av Care of Sweden2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    BAKGRUND:

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

After adopting Gy11, all high schools in Sweden couldn´t offer the subject special sports education. Lately, the only possible way to take the special physical education course is at NIU and RIG High School. The purpose with this study was to investigate the teachers/instructors comprehension of the special physical education at NIU when it comes to the curriculum and knowledge requirement, as well as evaluation and grading. Furthermore, the goal is to exam which opportunities and challenges the teachers/instructors express within the subject special physical education. In order to reach the goal a quality method with semi structure interviews was used among seven teachers/instructors.

Our empiric is analyzed through chosen theoretical frameworks which are curriculum theory, framework theory as well as five key strategies. The result of this study shows that teachers/instructors experience the curriculum as a form of base in their education but they feel somewhat free to do whatever they please through their interpretation of the curriculum. Evaluation and grading occur continuously as the courses go on and the students are on several occasions evaluated on their spare time activities as well. The result continues to show that a common anticipated obstacle the teachers/instructors express is that they experience that the world of elite sports and the schools perspective world perspective at national elite collides with one another.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper the authors are focusing on people that work in psychiatric acute care. How do they identify the individual that is in most need of acute care? How do they judge in this kind of cases?

The foundation in this study is in the qualitative method. The material to this study has been collected by doing qualitative interviews with six people in different professions and positions in psychiatric acute care.

The material that we collected from these six qualitative interviews has been analysed with help from Sherif’s and Hovland’s (1961) Social judgement theory. The theory describes people’s judgement based on certain criterions and how it affects them.

It has been noticed that the individuals who asses first acute care are usually the ones that has a suicidal behavior. The resources are decreasing while the need for psychiatric acute care is increasing. The personell have to make decisions about which individual that are in most need of acute care. Their judgments are very important for the indiviuals in need of immediate care. This judgement can be depending on which individual who is doing the judgemet. This paper has given us comprehension for the immortance of good individual properties for doing judgements, and that they are made in several positions.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines implementation from national law in to local practice in the district of Kalmar to assure newly arrived immigrants orientation in civics. The study takes its starting point in Lipskys theory about street-level bureaucracy.  Questions that are discussed are about how  the education is understood by refugee’s coordinators, civic communicators and the new immigrates, how the organization has been and what role the demography and economic structures has played for the organization. It is a case study where interviews and enquete has been used. The district of Kalmar has in a future lack of workers why the immigrants are of interest as an asset for the labour market. Education in mother language is though expensive why resources are coordinated by the District association of Kalmar. Norms and values differ between municipalities about if the education is to be in mother language or not. Lack of economic resources makes also long travels for the pupils and that not all can take place in time for the education, for example study tours.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to explore what possibilities we, as newly graduated without experience as an officer, have to compete for a job on a shore based company which is active within the maritime sphere. We consider this relevant when the labour market for Swedish deck officers has changed during the last 10 years. To match our purpose we used the qualitative method in interviewing shore based companies associated with different areas in the marine industry and thereby examine if a degree in nautical science is considered as competency enough to obtain employment ashore. To make this survey we conducted interviews over the telephone and personal meetings when possible, with for example head of personnel or others whom are high up within the organization. The result varied between the different companies, some companies could consider hiring an newly graduated without experience as an officer while others considered the experience or a higher academic education desirable when some positions demand a more oriented knowledge in economics, maritime law or logistics.

Conceptions of Nation and Ethnicity in Swedish Children's Films: The Case of Kidz in da Hood (Förortsungar, 2006)2013In: Journal of Educational Media, Memory and Society, ISSN 2041-6938, E-ISSN 2041-6946, Vol. 5, no 2, p. 92-107Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Swedish children's films frequently deal with issues of nation and ethnicity, specifically with “Swedishness”. This may be most obvious in films based on the works of Astrid Lindgren, which abound with nostalgic images of the national culture and landscape. However, films about contemporary Sweden, such as Kidz in da Hood (Förortsungar, 2006) address these issues too. Kidz in da Hood is about children in the ethnically diverse suburbs of Stockholm and it tells the story of a young fugitive, Amina, who is cared for by a young bohemian musician. It is, interestingly, a remake of one of the first Swedish children's films, Guttersnipes (Rännstensungar, 1944). In this article I argue that Kidz in da Hood is a contradictory piece, in the sense that it both celebrates and disavows “Swedishness”, as it substitutes the class conict of Guttersnipes for ethnic conflict.
