Vart tog musiken vägen?: En kvalitativ undersökning om hur ett evenemang kan användas som ett kommunikationsverktyg.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study deals with the concept of ’integration’. Starting from the concept of reality as socially and linguistically constructed, it is an attempt to see how lingual constructions and perceptions affect the official structures of society and vice versa. The main purpose is to compare the different meanings integration has in a sociological context and in a political one. Further, the purpose is to see how the relationship between the sociological and political concepts affects the integrational work in the Swedish County Administrative Boards, and which consequences these effects might have. The study is carried out with ethnographic methods, i.e. participant observation and textual analysis, in a specific County Administrative Board, focusing mainly on its policy and strategy for integrational work. The results are that the main differences between the sociological and political definitions of integration lie in their extent of meanings. The sociological definitions contain many different meanings which sometimes contradict each other. The political ones however are more fixed and limited in their scope. The goal of the integrational politics is not always clear and this affects the practical work. Other problems are that the political as well as practical integrational definitions are limited to certain groups during certain conditions. The consequences of these problems can be that certain groups are left out of the integrational process, that some of the factors of integration are neglected and that immigrants, being the designated group in need of integration, are stigmatized.

Reaktioner på en organisationsförändring: En kvalitativ studie om chefernas upplevelse av förändring2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In our thesis, we concluded that the managers' reactions are not due to reorganization in itself but how the change has happened. Their responses reflect a resistance to the manner in which the change has been implemented. There are people in the organization and not organizational form that is important for managers. We think that the factors that influence a successful change is employee involvement, the opportunity for a good dialogue before the decision is taken, communication and sense of coherence.

Kosovo - a ''Humanitarian Intervention'': A case study about Kosovo and Nato's intervention on 24 March, 19992012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is a type of case study, it examines if intervention in Kosovo were in accordance with humanitarian intervention criteria. This study gives an understanding that intervention may sometime worsen condition for the people it wants to rescue, and that inability to address humanitarian intervention prevails in diffuse victory.

The purpose of this essay is to examine the Kosovo conflict and the approach of humanitarian intervention in 24 March, 1999.  The approach made by NATO was seen as a new international phenomenon that sought to protect values of human rights. The results of this study pose doubt to this notion; it reflects that the intervention rested not only on humanitarian grounds. The most important aspect of humanitarian intervention is promoting security for the people it wants to rescue. The results shows that NATO’s intervention in short term failed to provide security; it is shown that the air campaign had little impact at the beginning prevailing only after much damage and suffering has been done.

The result also shows that failure to adopt the issue of Kosovo more adequately at an earlier stage on the international agenda resulted in the ''welfare'' of NATO's intervention. Despite the consequences of NATO’s action, situation prevailed for the better outcome for the Kosovar-Albanian people than what might have been has intervention been absent. FRY: s deliberative plan of expelling the Kosovo-Albanian to the last one would have been finalized if intervention would have been absent.

Assessing quality in higher education: new criteria for evaluating students’ satisfaction2011In: Quality in Higher Education, ISSN 1353-8322, E-ISSN 1470-1081, Vol. 17, no 2, p. 231-243Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this research is to present a new quality assurance model (5Qs) and to examine the major factors affecting students’ perception of cumulative satisfaction. The model includes behavioural dimensions of student satisfaction. The factors included in this cumulative summation are technical, functional, infrastructure, interaction and atmosphere of higher education institutions. This study concerns students in higher education institutions in Istanbul Turkey. The questionnaire contains a total of 39 items (attributes) of newly developed five quality dimensions (5Qs). A total of 1641 complete and usable questionnaires was received. Frequency analysis, factor analysis and reliability analysis were used for analysing the data collected. Inspection of scree plot and eigenvalues enabled the analysis to reduce the 39 quality attributes to seven factors. The results can be used by higher education institutions to re-engineer and re-design creatively their quality-management processes and the future direction of their more effective education quality strategies.

Jakten på en mördare: Två svenska tidningars rapportering om jakten på Anna Lindhs misstänkte mördare.2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

On September 10th 2003 the Swedish foreign minister Anna Lindh was brutally murdered in a shopping mall in central Stockholm. An intense police pursuit was initiated immediately and shortly after, a man who later proved to be innocent was portrayed as the murderer in the Swedish media. The main purpose of this essay was to examine how the suspect and the police were described in the evening newspaper Aftonbladet and the morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Do the descriptions differ in any way? A total of fifteen texts were examined, eight articles from Aftonbladet and seven from Dagens Nyheter. The method we used were critical discourse analysis, with focus on theories like media logic and representation. The result showed that both DN and Aftonbladet used dramaturgical methods as intensification and polarization in their reporting. Both papers also engaged in an extensive description of the 35-year-old's personal history and payed little or no mean to press ethics, in terms of personal integrity. A fact that could indicate the growing convergence between evening and morning press.

Allsvenskans kommunikation: Den strategiska kommunikationens utbredning inom svensk elitfotboll2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to illustrate how an organisation with several different cultural activities, such as a regional museum, works with anemphasis on participation. The essay focuses on Kulturparken Småland AB, which encourages the public to be more involved in its activities. Aqualitative approach is used, including nine interviews with employees at theorganisation. A number of theories form the basis of this study: institutionaltheory, which focuses on the context of the organisation, Bourdieu’s theoriesof different capital and Abbott’s theory regarding professionals. In the resultsand analyses section, three operators/actors are identified that in differentways impact upon Kulturparken Småland´s work with participation. Theoperators are the following: the cultural politics arena, the general public andthe scientific community. The results demonstrate that these three operatorsplace the organization under different pressures that affect its identity, professions and aspirations of legitimacy.

    Abstract

Title: Gender equality – of course! A qualitative study on gender equal recruitment at a university

    Author: Ingrid Öhlund

Several studies show that the division of gender in Swedish universities is uneven. Since universities are important organizations where our future citizens get their education and become socialized, I found it interesting to investigate how a Swedish university handles the gender equality issue in the process of recruitment. The aim of this study was to contribute with a higher level of knowledge and understanding about the recruitment process out of a gender equality perspective. The aim was also to identify which stages of the recruitment process that was vulnerable out of a gender equality perspective. To examine this, these following questions were put: Which struc-tures may seem prohibitive when it comes to recruit gender equal? and Which stages in the pro-cess is vulnerable out of a gender equal perspective?. Weber's bureaucracy model and also institutional theory with concepts such as legitimacy were used to explore the subject. To carry out the study, a qualitative method with interviews was used and seven persons with different experiences of the recruitment process participated. The result shows that there are several vulnerable stages in the recruitment process and that there are structures that may seem prohibitive from a gender equality perspective. There is a discrepancy between how the documents present the work with gender equality and the actual behavior in the organization. Another vulnerability that emerges from the study is that knowledge and information were not communicated and spread out in the organization. There are ambiguities in the routines and uncertainties on how you can, or cannot, write the employment profile to attract candidates. The commitment to gender equal recruitment is often a matter of personal interest. However, the results show that nobody opposes the issue of equality as an important matter. The results were further analyzed by using the concepts professional bureaucracy, meritocracy, inertia, legitimacy and decoupling.
