Component-based Software development2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Component-based Software development is a promising way to improve quality, time to market and handle the increasing complexity of software management. However, The component-based development is still a process with many problems, it is not well de_ned either from theoretical or practical point of view. This thesis gives a brief overview of Component-Based Software development and starts with brief historical evolution followed by a general explanation of the method. A detailed discussion of the underlying principles like components, component framework and compent system architecture are then presented. Some real world component stadards such as .net framework, CORBA CCM and EJB are given in detail. Finally, simple fille-sharing-program based on Apache's Avalon framework and another one based on .net framework are developed as a case study.

Videokompression och användarnytta2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Quantum Markov Model for Data from Shafir-Tversky Experiments in Cognitive Psychology2009In: Open systems & information dynamics, ISSN 1230-1612, E-ISSN 1573-1324, Vol. 16, no 4, p. 371-385Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We analyze, from the point of view of quantum probability, statistical data from two interesting experiments, done by Shafir and Tversky [1, 2] in the domain of cognitive psychology. These are gambling experiments of Prisoner Dilemma type. They have important consequences for economics, especially for the justification of the Savage "Sure Thing Principle" [3] (implying that agents of the market behave rationally). Data from these experiments were astonishing, both from the viewpoint of cognitive psychology and economics and probability theory. Players behaved irrationally. Moreover, all attempts to generate these data by using classical Markov model were unsuccessful. In this note we show (by inventing a simple statistical test — generalized detailed balance condition) that these data are non-Kolmogorovian. We also show that it is neither quantum (i.e., it cannot be described by Dirac-von Neumann model). We proceed towards a quantum Markov model for these data.

Probabilistic Analysis of the EPR-Bohm Experiment2007Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Bell's Theorem was developed on the basis of considerations

involving a linear combination of spin correlation functions, each

of which has a distinct pair of arguments. The simultaneous

presence of these different pairs of arguments in the same

equation is investigated, and the implicit counterfactual

assumption in Bell's theorem is discussed.

We show how an explicit contextuality can arise from a model

displaying unfair sampling, and we discuss it in the

framework of David Mermin's cleverly simple version of Bell's

theore, which pinpoints in a very straightforward way how

interpreting entanglement from a realistic point of view can be

problematic. We present an extended version of Mermin's device

that can actually be given a straightforward realistic

    interpretation.

We stress that the low efficiency of detectors in all experiments

with photons makes the use of the fair sampling assumption

unavoidable. Since this very assumption is false in all existing

local realistic models based on inefficient detection, we thus

question its validity. We show that it is no more reasonable to

assume fair sampling than it is impossible to test, and we

actually propose an experimental test which would provides clear

cut results in case of unfair sampling

We then analyze optical EPR experimental data performed by Weihs et al in Innsbruck 1997-1998. We show that for some linear

combinations of the raw coincidence rates, the experimental

results display some anomalous behavior that a more general source state (like non-maximally entangled state) cannot

straightforwardly account for. We use the fair sampling

assumption, and assume explicitly that the detection efficiencies

for the pairs of entangled photons can be written as a product of

the two corresponding detection efficiencies for the single

photons. We show that this explicit use of fair sampling cannot be

maintained to be a reasonable assumption as it leads to an

apparent violation of the no-signalling principle.

    Abstract [en]

We have previously shown that the use of the fair sampling assumption in EPR experiments could be questioned on the basis of experimental data. We continue our analysis of the data from the optical EPR experimental performed by Weihs et al. in Innsbruck 1997-1998, and we discuss whether a non-rotationally invariant source can account for the experimental results.

    Abstract [en]

We present some recent results of a new statistical analysis of the optical EPR experiment performed by Weihs et al in Innsbruck 1997-1998. Under the commonly used assumption of fair sampling, we show that the coincidence counts exhibit a small and anomalous non-signalling component, which seems impossible to explain by using the conventional quantum mechanics, and we discuss some possible interpretations of this phenomenon.

We show that for some linear combinations of the raw coincidence rates, the experimental results display some anomalous behaviour that a more general source state (like non-maximally entangled state) cannot straightforwardly account for. We attempt to explain these anomalies by taking account of the relative efficiencies of the four channels. Abstract [en]

Stream ciphers are counted as an important part of symmetric encryption method. Their basic idea comes from One-Time-Pad cipher using XOR operator on the plain text and the key to generate the cipher. The present work brings a new idea in symmetric encryption method, which inherits stream key generation idea from synchronous stream cipher and uses division instead of xoring. The Usage of division to combine the plain text with stream key gives numerous abilities to this method that the most important one is using random factors to produce the ciphers.

Graph visualization with OpenGL2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Vizz3D is a 3D graphics code analysis tool, developed at Växjö University that optionally can use Java3D or OpenGL. However, initially Java3D was the only programming interface used. No other version was considered. Therefore the applications structure was built with the Java3D way of thought in mind. But code visualization with 3D graphics can be a demanding task for the computers processor and its graphics hardware and Java3D is known to be somewhat inefficient. So an OpenGL version was introduced.

This thesis reflects on the work restructuring the application’s code to fit both versions within Vizz3D in a structured and object-oriented way. The thesis shows the efforts to be taken to make an existing ever evolving tool easily extendible to other API’s. Additional aspects of OpenGL specific implementations are discussed throughout the thesis.

Evaluation of retrieval effectiveness with incomplete relevance data: theoretical and experimental comparison of three measures2007In: International Journal of Information Processing & Management, Vol. In press, p. 14-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The main reason for this work is to find an appropriate way to include multi-word units in a latent semantic vector model. This would be of great use since these models normally are defined in terms of words, which makes it impossible to search for many types of multi-word units when the model is used in information retrieval tasks. The paper presents a Swedish evaluation set based on synonym tests and an evaluation of vector models trained with different corpora and parameter settings, including a rather naive way to add bi- and trigrams to the models. The best results in the evaluation is actually obtained with both bi- and trigrams added. Our hope is that the results in a forthcoming evaluation in the document retrieval context, which is an important application for these models, still will be at least as good with the bi- and trigrams are added, as without.

Matematik från grunden: sortering och klassificering med de yngsta barnen i förskolan2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this thesis is to design a web base system which provides functionality of comparison between two java files on the basis of point-to information (P2I). User will upload Java files and analysis of Java files called point-to analysis (P2A). System will store the files in the file system for reference and download in later time. System will extract the information called P2I from P2A and it will store that information in the database.

Database should be flexible to accommodate the changes in P2A file and system should be able to extract the P2I and store it in database with minimum support of system administrator.

    Abstract [en]

Knowledge management, as an academic area, is maturing; however, there are still problems connected with both the diversity of the theoretical base and the gap between theory and its practical application. In this paper we tackle these problems by reviewing a number of basic knowledge management theories with the intention of formulating a more integrated and at the same time practical planning framework. The focus guiding the literature selection is on basic theories about the nature of knowledge management, theories that expose the complex nature of knowledge in organizations. We examine these theories and try to understand what could be perceived as the paradoxical nature of these theories. Here we understand a paradox as something seemingly self-contradictory though perhaps actually well-founded statement. We focus on four areas or themes: 1) knowledge as the key resource of a business, 2) knowledge as a competitive force and source of growth, 3) the nature of the management of a knowledge resource, and 4) the management of knowledge workers. From a practical point of view, the conflicting arguments of these theories can be seen as possible strategic options. Based on these discussions we then formulate a framework, or what might be called a strategic option generator. As a concluding discussion we focus on the contribution of IS/IT to the realization of the different possible strategic options. This is done on a rather general level, where we examine the possibilities of IS/IT in relation to the paradoxes.

This report discusses information systems as support systems for knowledge workers. A case is presented discussing the introduction of two types of information systems into an organisation as support for knowledge workers. The case is interpreted using a set of theories from knowledge theory and the area of knowledge management. The aim of this report is to give empirical input to the understanding of the conditions of knowledge work and information systems. An interpretative framework is presented consisting of a set of perspectives on knowledge work and the use of information systems.

    Abstract [en]

Knowledge management is today an established approach to improve and renew organizations. The right use of information systems are often essential element in a successful KM strategy, however creating the right mix of KM activities and system is difficult and failures are frequent. Getting a good grip of the current situation and the special condition of the organization is therefore essential. In this paper we study an initiating questionnaire, taken from the KM literature, with a background in US management consulting industry. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the questionnaire, from a Swedish perspective. This is done with the aim to search for more general advice for anyone wanting to adapt and use such a questionnaire in their own situation. For this purpose, a number of applications of the questionnaire is presented and investigated. The outcome of the study is an initial assessment of the usefulness of the questionnaire and some recommendations for further use and research into the questionnaire. The usefulness seems to depend on the situation of persons that the questionnaire is given to. The analysis shows that the questionnaire seems to fit rather well to companies that were included in the study, especially on a management level. However, some possible problem areas were also discovered, the background, motivation and work situation of some personnel group could interfere with the effectiveness of the questionnaire.

illegal copying. This problem is made possible due to that no good solution exists. Copy protection isn’t good enough and peer-to-peer-networks are bigger than ever. In this work we will examine specifically the music industry.

Purpose: We will specialize in the term of illegal copying. Further we want to enlight and inform the music industry as well as the users of the problem and it´s future. We hope the result we will achieve can be a foundation for further research.

Realization: We have gathered our information from articles on the Internet and also from updated literature. Interviews were made over the phone with Magnus Mårtensson, IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), Anna Burén, lawyer of copyright at

Swedish Radio, Per Sandin, General manager EMI marketing and also a lot of Internetsuppliers. We have also compilated an inquiry which has been replied to by many people.

Conclusion: Many of the buyers from the past consider the cost of a CD far too high. Instead they have discovered the illegal copying and its unlimited functions. They have also realized how easy you can get new music without reprisals, which mostly depends on the vague and

not to scary laws. Music companies are losing money and therefore they raise the prize of a single CD, simultaneously as they work to find the perfect copy protection. The future looks uncertain and for the moment, those who are copying along with peer-to-peer-networks have

    all the trumps.

Keywords: mp3, CD, copy-protection, peer-to-peer-networks, copyright, illegal copying, music companies.

Time performance comparison in determining the weak parts in wooden logs2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The steadily increasing demand of wood forces sawmills to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their equipments. The weak parts and the twist in wooden logs have been documented as the most common and crucial defect in sawn lumber.

In this thesis we are going to implement a program which is able to determine the weak parts in wooden logs. The implementation will be in two languages C++ and Matlab. Parts of the program are going to be implemented sometimes by C++ and sometimes by Matlab therefore different designs are going to be tested. The aim of this thesis is to check whether these designs will meet the real time bound of 10 m/s.

The result shows that there is a huge difference in time performance for the different designs. Therefore, different discretization levels were used in order to meet the deadline of 10m/s. We found that in order to get better speed one should calculate the matrix for the function F and the Jacobian function J by using C++ not by Matlab. Also we found that when we called functions from one language to another an extra time is added.

Methods for Path loss Prediction2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Large scale path loss modeling plays a fundamental role in designing both fixed and mobile radio systems. Predicting the radio coverage area of a system is not done in a standard manner. Wireless systems are expensive systems. Therefore, before setting up a system one has to choose a proper method depending on the channel environment, frequency band and the desired radio coverage range. Path loss prediction plays a crucial role in link budget analysis and in the cell coverage prediction of mobile radio systems. Especially in urban areas, increasing numbers of subscribers brings forth the need for more base stations and channels. To obtain high efficiency from the frequency reuse concept in modern cellular systems one has to eliminate the interference at the cell boundaries. Determining the cell size properly is done by using an accurate path loss prediction method. Starting from the radio propagation phenomena and basic path loss models this thesis aims at describing various accurate path loss prediction methods used both in rural and urban environments. The Walfisch-Bertoni and Hata models, which are both used for UHF propagation in urban areas, were chosen for a detailed comparison. The comparison shows that the Walfisch-Bertoni model, which involves more parameters, agrees with the Hata model for the overall path loss.

WBD – Web Based Diagnostics: Identifierande av parametrar på CAN-bussen2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This abstract describes the bachelor degree thesis in computer technology at Växjö University written by Philip Albertson during the spring term of 2007. At the company BSR in Växjö, Sweden there is a new project under development called WBD – Web based diagnostics. The aim of the project is to make car diagnostics available to ordinary people at a decent cost. The system consists of three parts; a module to plug in the car, a server to handle the information and a client to allow the customers to reach the information about their car. My part in this project was to specify how to reach certain parameters on the CAN-bus in cars from VAG (Volkswagen Auto Group) and Saab. The company was satisfied with the results since they provided a good basis to further develop the module prototype built by the company EDAB (Elektronik Design AB) in Sundsvall, Sweden.

Operator calculus for p-adic valued symbols and quantization2009In: Rendicoti Del Seminario Matematico, ISSN 0373-1243, Vol. 67, no 2, p. 137-150Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this short review is to attract the attention of the pseudo-differentialcommunity to possibilities in the development of operator calculus for symbols (dependingon p-adic conjugate variables) taking values in fields of p-adic numbers. Essentials of thiscalculus were presented in works of the authors of this paper in order to perform p-adic valuedquantization. Unfortunately, this calculus still has not attracted a great deal of attentionfrom pure mathematicians, although it opens new and interesting domains for the theory ofpseudo-differential operators.

    Abstract [en]

This review covers an important domain of p-adic mathematical physics — quantum mechanics with p-adic valued wave functions. We start with basic mathematical constructions of this quantum model: Hilbert spaces over quadratic extensions of the field of p-adic numbers ℚ p , operators — symmetric, unitary, isometric, one-parameter groups of unitary isometric operators, the p-adic version of Schrödinger’s quantization, representation of canonical commutation relations in Heisenberg andWeyl forms, spectral properties of the operator of p-adic coordinate. We also present postulates of p-adic valued quantization. Here observables as well as probabilities take values in ℚ p . A physical interpretation of p-adic quantities is provided through approximation by rational numbers.

    Abstract [en]

An estimate uniform in time for the transition probability of di®usion processes with small drift is given. This also covers the case of a degenerate di®usion describing a stochastic perturbation of a particle moving according to the Newton's law. Moreover the random wave operator for such a particle is described and the analogue of asymptotic completeness is proven, the latter in the case of a su±ciently small drift.

Matematik i förskolan: Om synsätt och arbetssätt efter kompetensutveckling2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Much of the data generated and analyzed in the life sciences can be interpreted and represented by networks or graphs. Network analysis and visualization methods help in investigating them, and many universal as well as special-purpose tools and libraries are available for this task. However, the two fields of graph drawing and network biology are still largely disconnected. Hence, visualization of biological networks does typically not apply state-of-the-art graph drawing techniques, and graph drawing tools do not respect the drawing conventions of the life science community.

In this paper, we analyze some of the major problems arising in biological network visualization. We characterize these problems and formulate a series of open graph drawing problems. These use cases illustrate the need for efficient algorithms to present, explore, evaluate, and compare biological network data. For each use case, problems are discussed and possible solutions suggested.

Lärares samsyn beträffande matematik: En studie om matematik i förskoleklass och år 12007Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis describes a project for the bachelor degree in electrical engineering at Växjö University. The purpose with this project is to construct a guidance system for a robot car, a program that prevents the car from colliding with objects when moving without external control. The robot could also be controlled from the computer through a virtual instrument implemented in Labview. The necessary hardware for steering and communicating has been constructed. The software is implemented using three different programming languages, C, Perl and Labview.

Undersökning av metoder för att analysera och modellera efter stora datamaterial, hantering av programmet SPSS samt en studie i Kronoberg läns gymnasieelevers psykiska ohälsa2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Matematiksvårigheter: textuppgifter inom algebra2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
