It highlights how the French nation of Seville received unprecedented support from the Crown to develop their marginal enterprises in the Carrera de Indias. Royal patronage played a significant role in integrating—or exluding—wealthy merchant communities from the Spanish Atlantic trading system, therby expanding their networks for direct exchanges with the Americas. The study reconstructs French commercial connections within the Spanish Atlantic trade, contextualized alongside Flemish and Italian networks already operating in New Spain. These three nations dominated much of the cargo legally shipped to and from the viceroyalty in the 1620s and 1630s. It aims to assess the potential for a centralized, user-friendly digital platform to enhance discoverability, accessibility, and engagement across cultural audiences and providers.The study combines a review of 82 regional and international cultural event information platforms (CEIPs) with two online surveys conducted in 2023 (n=34) and 2024 (n=23). Survey participants included cultural professionals from regional and municipal organizations in Småland.Municipal CEIPs often lack advanced filtering, multilingual support, and personalization features. Select international platforms demonstrate more sophisticated functionality. Survey data reveal strong interest in a unified platform, with emphasis on integration of information on events, inclusivity, and usability. Key barriers include administrative burden, and long-term maintenance concerns.Results inform the development of a flexible, metadata-rich CEIP prototype aligned with municipal infrastructure and user needs. Recommendations highlight actionable features for developers, municipalities, and cultural institutions.A well-designed platform can improve cultural participation, especially for underserved groups such as newcomers, non-native speakers, and digitally excluded audiences, contributing to greater cultural equity and accessibility. Preserved data on cultural events over time can serve as a basis for planning future cultural policies.This study offers one of the first regional assessments of CEIPs in Sweden, combining platform analysis with stakeholder insight. Despite these OCR has been explored for printed maps with typeface text. But little work is currently undertaken applying handwritten text recognition (HTR) on non-printed, handwritten maps. Several openly available HTR tools – such as Transkribus or HTR Flow – are able to capture text from manually written documents, but these tools are usually applied to predominantly textual documents (e.g., letters, manuscripts, diaries). There is little insight into their efficacy regarding cartographic documents.This on-going project explores the feasibility of current artifical intelligence models for HTR on the historical maps of Danish cartographer Johannes Mejer (1606-1674). Besides learning the capacities of current technologies in this type of media, digitalization of Mejer’s collection can offer insights into a crucial period in Nordic history, preceding the Swedish acquisition of Skåne, which Mejer was the first to chart during this time. Several machine learning applications for HTR – specialized systems such as Transkribus and HTR Flow, as well as general large language models such as GPT5 and Sonnet 4 – are trained and tested. After outlining the problem and the methods, including the preparation of AI training/testing material, this presentation reports the findings regarding the performance of currently available machine learning models. Following this, we propose subsequent steps for improved output. We also share preliminary historical insights gleaned from the processing on the Mejer’s works, as well as the overall challenge of applying HTR machine learning for difficult material such as historical maps. The findings from the pilot study indicate that online information activitiesof the far-right display a view of public libraries as leftist and as potential threats tothe nation, echoing ethnic nationalism and authoritarian views commonlyassociated with the far-right.Conclusions. This paper explores a challenge for any novel digital intervention: the hesitancy or reluctance among the designated user group.Purpose.The overall purpose is to better understand the hesitant reception of digital innovations through a specific case study. The aim is to further our understanding of resistance towards digital innovation as well as reflect upon the pro-innovation bias of digital development projects.Method. Multiple sources were combined: data collected within the case project and conducted document analysis of project documentation.Results.Labor and maintenance were the main reasons behind stakeholder hesitancy, as well as concerns regarding the hosting, funding, and local relevance of the proposed innovation. Conclusion. The assumption that digitization is inherently beneficial shaped the direction of the case project. Yet ongoing cultural changes and current adaptations must be understood to ensure a new digital solution is actually needed. As researchers we must pay enough attention to relevant local conditions by critically engaging with the innovation process of the project itself. Podcasts on religious deconstruction have played a crucial role in the formation of this network. This study is the first to explore the emerging phenomenon of religious deconstruction podcasts in Sweden. Specifically, the article focuses on the podcast Exvangeliet and examines deconstruction as a communicative project (Linell, 2011a, 2011b). The study aims to gain insight and a critical perspective on these podcast conversations’ underlying patterns, norms, and expectations. Three main organization sequences within the deconstructive conversation are identified: the personal narrative, joint processing, and joint reflection. The conversations are highly collaborative, emphasizing cooperation rather than competition, and lack significant internal conflict. While low-code tools do introduce closedbox issues, they can still be considered important stepping stones toward computational approaches. This chapter draws on two such tools, Octoparse and KNIME (Konstanz Information Miner), to present a workflow from data collection from online sources, through text pre-processing, toward text classification in the context of the ongoing project Cultural Institutions and the Culture War (CICuW) that investigates the democratic implications of the pervasiveness of farright digital discourse. This chapter will introduce web scraping, topic modeling, and sentiment analysis in an accessible way, while also showcasing state-of-the-art approaches to the analysis components through the use of BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) models and zero-shot classification. Yet queer lives remain unevenly recognised within film and video collections. This article focuses on the ethical and political implications of digitising and circulating queer audiovisual heritage, particularly under European copyright regimes and in the context of artificial intelligence and generative AI trained on cultural heritage materials. Digitisation and online visibility can be both enabling and harmful. The article demonstrates how archival decisions around access, metadata, and description shape recognition, legibility, and vulnerability. Practices such as tagging, the use of metadata, and retrodigitalisation raise questions about consent, retrospective exposure, and the temporal disjunctions produced when past materials circulate in contemporary digital contexts. We therefore need to understand archival workflows as sites where care, power, and responsibility are negotiated.The article argues for an ethics of care for queer audiovisual heritage on digital platforms. Such an approach shifts attention away from archival objects towards relational processes, emphasising accountability to donors, communities, and future users. The article identifies micro archives as key sites of care-based knowledge. Occasionally community-driven and always specialised, these archives have developed practices attuned to trust, situated ethics, and the management of vulnerability. At the same time, the growing collaboration between micro-archives and national heritage institutions introduces new tensions around the translation of care into larger institutional frameworks. For its examples, the article draws on long-term collaborations with the Swedish National Film Archives, the Swedish Archive for Queer Moving Images, bildwechsel in Hamburg, and the Lesbian Home Movie Project in Maine. The study aimed to determine: (1) to what degree are Queerlit books identified as LGBTQ+ books in widely used information services, in particular Google Books, LibraryThing and Goodreads; and, (2) whether metadata in these information services could be considered of value for the Queerlit database and complement its highly extensive and highly specific indexing.Design/methodology/approachThe study compared keywords (subject index terms, tags) assigned to works of Swedish LGBTQ+ fiction across three commercial services: Google Books, Goodreads and LibraryThing, against the curated database, Queerlit.FindingsOf the 1320 LGBTQ+ works in Queerlit, only a small portion was found in the three web services: 8.26% on Google Books (<i>n</i> = 109), 13.26% on Goodreads (<i>n</i> = 175), while about half on LibraryThing (55.3%, <i>n</i> = 730). This underrepresentation of Swedish LGBTQ+ works in the three international commercial information services makes them hardly of value to the readers. This is exacerbated by the fact that only a minority of Queerlit books found in the three services are categorised as LGBTQ+. These metadata standards have evolved over time to accommodate changing needs, growing and diversifying collections, and emerging digital affordances. Yet, for numerous reasons, subject metadata are neither fully nor rigorously implemented in many of today’s catalogues – whether in the backend indices or the front-end end-user interfaces – to the detriment of users. Online public library catalogues, discovery services, journal article databases, university repositories and museum catalogues all demonstrate shortcomings in how subject metadata are integrated, consolidated and leveraged (Golub 2016; Golub 2018; Golub et al. 2020; Golub, Ziolkowski and Zlodi 2022). Properly incorporated, subject metadata could greatly improve the discovery of objects within collections and (because collections are increasingly connected online) the reconciliation of descriptive information across different collections for better cross-database searching. It thus challenges the technological determinism often prevalent in previous research, which tends to equate successful social media use with two-way communication and views its absence as a failure. The findings show that, rather than conforming to dominant platform norms, these churches take a negotiated approach, adapting their use of Instagram to serve their values and goals. These books were primarily used in medieval Swedish parish churches (including present-day Finland), and they could be said to represent everyday book culture of the time. Ten fragments from the collections of the National Archives of Sweden dated to the 12th to the 15th century were studied by microscopy, hyperspectral imaging in the visible and ultraviolet range, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, reflectance spectroscopy in the UV, visible and near-infrared range, external reflectance in the mid- and near-infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Pigments, colourants, and inks have been characterized and identified. The aim was to enhance the understanding of these objects and to evaluate the value of technical analysis, the results of which, when combined with historical and palaeographic studies, will advance the comprehension of medieval Nordic book culture. The results reveal the presence of many of the materials commonly used in book production in Europe at the time, such as vermilion, red lead, azurite, orpiment, and copper-based greens, and also some more unusual substances. The colourant components evince significant variation, and it appears likely that they were largely received via trade routes and learned networks from various European locations. The documents from the 12th century differ from the others in their substances and practices, such as the use of ultramarine for calendar rubrics and the varied use of different reds and greens. LNU was founded in 2010 by a merger of the former Växjö University and Kalmar University, and currently has approximately 44,000 enrolled students. The university is currently Sweden’s sixth largest in terms of student numbers. It has 600 partner universities in more than 80 countries around the world. Over the past decade, there has been a distinct emphasis on the Digital Humanities at LNU through a variety of initiatives, all focused on fostering interdisciplinary expertise in the Humanities, data analysis, cultural heritage, and ICTs. Best described as a decentralized collaborative culture, DH at LNU includes knowledge environments (e.g. Digital Transformations), centers of excellence (e.g. the Centre for Data Intensive Sciences and Applications), and the iInstitute (the local center for the international iSchools consortium). LNU was the first Swedish university to join DARIAH and is now leading the bid for national membership. In 2016, Linnaeus established a Digital Humanities Hub to focus on data-intensive digital humanities, leading to the implementation of digital humanities as a research and teaching subject at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and to the Digital Humanities MA programme. This programme is being offered in English to international students, who benefit from being able to take advantage of the worldwide iSchools agreement for virtual student and faculty exchange. As part of the work of the DH Hub and the iInstitute, LNU was recently granted funding for a national PhD school in digital humanities, an initiative between four Swedish universities. The analysis focused on categorisation and frequent nouns and pronouns. It also aimed to contribute to the body of research on aboutness and related challenges in automated subject indexing and evaluation.Design/methodology/approachOn a sample of over 230,000 records with close to 12,000 distinct DDC classes, an open source tool Annif, developed by the National Library of Finland, was applied in the following implementations: lexical algorithm, support vector classifier, fastText, Omikuji Bonsai and an ensemble approach combing the former four. A qualitative study involving two senior catalogue librarians and three students of library and information studies was also conducted to investigate the value and inter-rater agreement of automatically assigned classes, on a sample of 60 records.FindingsThe best results were achieved using the ensemble approach that achieved 66.82% accuracy on the three-digit DDC classification task. The qualitative study confirmed earlier studies reporting low inter-rater agreement but also pointed to the potential value of automatically assigned classes as additional access points in information retrieval.Originality/valueThe paper presents an extensive study of automated classification in an operative library catalogue, accompanied by a qualitative study of automated classes. Unlike other types of documents, such as physics academic papers, fiction does not always name the concepts it addresses, but rather implies them through subtle clues. Fiction also uses metaphors intentionally to convey deeper meanings. To make Swedish LGBTQ+ fiction more accessible, the Queerlit database (https://queerlit.dh.gu.se/) provides subject indexing by information professionals. They use the QLIT thesaurus (based on Homosaurus) for LGBTQ+ themes and Swedish Subject Headings (SAO – Svenska Ämnesord) for non-LGBTQ+ themes. The indexing is comprehensive and retrospective, assigning terms to previously published Swedish fiction.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This work aims to determine to what degree and under which conditions is it possible to automatically assign subject index terms from QLIT, in order to estimate the usefulness of automatic tools to support subject indexing conducted by information professionals. This process may require a large number of training documents which are not available (the entire Queerlit database has about 2000 works indexed and QLIT has about 800 terms, while SAO is much bigger). Therefore, another approach will be explored – whether automatically extracted terms from the texts provide the potential to complement existing, professionally assigned terms from QLIT and SAO. We experiment with zero-shot classification transformers and topic modeling.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The proposed paper will present the intermediate results of different methods applied to available texts from the QLIT database. It is important to note that the project is currently in an exploratory phase and that the presentation is intended to showcase how different approaches have both failed and succeeded. We also intend to highlight areas of possible applicability specifically from the perspective afforded by the QLIT thesaurus, i.e., the appropriateness of the methods for Swedish LGBTQ+ fiction. Trolling the Library aims to explore radical right digital attacks against public libraries, and is currently piloting different methods to analyse online comments and news items from the website SamNytt. This contribution outlines one intended deliverable of the project: a shareable workflow for the low-code tool KNIME (KoNstanz Information MinEr). Low-code tools play an important role in making data analysis and visualization accessible to researchers and students with limited experience, or interest, in programming (see De Mauro, Marzoni &amp; Walter, 2021). While low-code tools do introduce closed-box issues, they can still be considered important steppingstones towards computational approaches (Tyrkkö &amp; Ihrmark, submitted). An additional benefit is the shareability of the workflow resulting from designing the method pipeline in tools such as KNIME or Orange.  The specific workflow resulting from Trolling the Library contains sentiment analysis and topic modeling components. While limited in scope, the discussion of the workflow highlights both the benefits and drawbacks of low-code workflows as potential shareable resources for the digital humanities. The intention is for the paper to argue for a more explicit communication of our genre categorization practices, and by doing so suggest ways of avoiding miscommunication and confusion due to the genre term being understood differently within different disciplines and backgrounds. För att stödja detta inrättades Forskningsdatastödet under namnet Data Access Unit (DAU) 2019 för att hjälpa forskare hantera utmaningar inom öppen forskningsdata (ORD), kurering, publicering och relaterade frågor. En onlineundersökning bland forskare, lärare och doktorander, som fick 227 svar, avslöjade varierande förtrogenhet med ORD-praxis. Medan 57 % rapporterade att deras områden uppmuntrade till öppen datadelning, var många omedvetna om disciplinära tidskrifter som stöder ORD-praxis. Noterbart var att 75,3 % inte hade publicerat ORD på grund av etiska problem, brist på stöd eller tidsbrist. Däremot angav många att de var beredda att publicera data om de fick adekvat utbildning och stöd. Andra kommentarer underströk behovet av förbättrat individuellt stöd, förbättrat innehåll och navigering på webbsidan, samt proaktivt engagemang mellan avdelningarna för att anpassa forskningspraxis till öppna vetenskap.<b>Slutsatser</b>I linje med globala och nationella mål, inklusive Sveriges mål om full öppen tillgång till forskningsdata senast 2026, genomför Lnu ett tvåårigt projekt fokuserat på att tillämpa FAIR-principerna – att göra forskningsdata Findable (hittbara), Accessible (tillgängliga), Interoperable (interoperabla) och Reusable (återanvändbara). För att stödja denna övergång inrättade Linnéuniversitetet Forskningsdatastödet under namnet Data Access Unit (DAU) vid universitetsbibliotektet redan 2019. Med begränsad i resurser initialt, är gruppens uppgift bland annat att identifiera nödvändiga tjänster för att hjälpa forskare att övervinna utmaningar relaterade till publicering av öppen forskningsdata (ORD). En onlineundersökning genomfördes för att samla in insikter om aktuella ORD-praxis bland fakultets- och doktorander, som täckte demografi, medvetenhet om ORD-tidskrifter och arkiv och hinder för datadelning. Undersökningen fick 227 svar (17,21 % svarsfrekvens), vilket avslöjar en blandning av förtrogenhet med ORD-praxis över discipliner. Medan 57 % av de tillfrågade angav att deras områden uppmuntrar öppen datadelning, var många omedvetna om tidskrifter som föreskriver sådan praxis. En fjärdedel av deltagarna hade tidigare publicerat öppna data i en rad datalager och tidskrifter. Resultaten visar på betydande skillnader i ORD-praxis mellan discipliner, med vissa områden som aktivt stödjer datapublicering medan andra släpar efter av olika anledningar. Medan en del respondenter nämnde efterlevnad av tidskriftskrav och stöd för öppen vetenskap som skäl för att dela sina data, förblev många tveksamma. En betydande 75,3% hade inte publicerat ORD, ofta på grund av etiska problem, bristande stöd, osäkerhet om datagenerering i sin forskning, tidsbrist och upplevd brist på erkännande för datapublicering. Men många deltagare vars forskning producerar forskningsdata angav en vilja att publicera data i framtiden, med förbehåll för adekvat stöd och utbildning. Föreslagna utbildningsformat inkluderade korta videor, webbseminarier och praktiska workshops, som speglar olika preferenser baserat på forskarnas förtrogenhet med ORD. Kommentarer om Forskningsdatastödets tjänster innefattade behov av individuellt stöd, förbättring av webbsidan med ett antal ämnen, samt navigering och sökfunktioner. En nödvändig förutsättning för att driva öppna forskningsdata framåt tycks vara att inrätta forskningsetiska rådgivningstjänster som en del av forskningsdatastödsenheten. Allmänt uttrycktes stöd för öppna vetenskapsinitiativ, men nödvändigheten av att anpassa forskningskraven till disciplinära sammanhang underströks och behovet av proaktivt engagemang med forskare på ämnes-, institutions-, fakultets- och universitetsnivå betonades. De identifierade skillnaderna mellan forskningsämnen och discipliner måste beaktas, eftersom vissa forskningsämnen inte producerar data, medan andra har fullt implementerade infrastrukturer för datadelning och en utvecklad kultur för datadelning. Thus, many readers look outside the library catalogue to identify LGBTQ+ titles in social medial, personal social networks, or web search engines. This exploratory study builds on the Queerlit database of over 1800 Swedish LGBTQ+ works of fiction which have been subject indexed using a dedicated thesaurus. It aims to identify and discuss how Queerlit subject terms compare with those in the Swedish Union Catalogue (Libris), the social cataloguing website Goodreads as well as the Google Books API. Examples are as diverse as automated data mining for building energy management (C. Zhang et al., 2024), evaluating the accuracy of differential-diagnosis lists for clinical vignettes (Hirosawa et al., 2023), and human-machine-augmented intelligent vehicles (J. Zhang et al., 2023). They can also be used to extract structured information from unstructured text (Söderström, 2023). This poster presents a pilot study on one such application, the potential use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT for automatic subject indexing of archival documents in Swedish, Swedish LGBTQ fiction and Chinese fiction. The accuracy of the assigned subject index terms is compared with the output from ANNIF (Suominen et al., 2022), an established automatic subject indexing software used in libraries. The results display an impressive degree of accuracy for the subject index terms assigned by ChatGPT, but challenges have been identified in all three document types. For example, the appropriateness of the terms for historical text is highly questionable at times. The terms assigned by ANNIF, in contrast, are drawn from a controlled vocabulary, which ensures that they have been manually selected as suitable subject index terms. The pilot study shows that it is feasible to run the index terms suggested by ChatGPT through ANNIF to get index terms from a controlled vocabulary while harnessing ChatGPT’s state-of-the-art natural language understanding. This presents intriguing opportunities for implementing GPTs in the archival/library cataloging workflows.
