Centrum för infektionsekologi och epidemiologi: ett interdisciplinärt nätverk med syfte att studera och kontrollera zoonotiska sjukdomar
Title [en]
Infection, Ecology and Epidemiology Network: an interdisciplinary network aiming to study and control zoonotoic diseases
Abstract [sv]
Humans are the second most common mammal on earth. In one generation we have doubled the population and are approaching 7 billion. We live in proximity to each other as well as to an increasing number of domestic animals, including 25 billions chickens, billions each of pigs, cows, goats and sheep. The consequence of our expansion is a steady increase of populations in limited areas and a subsequent decrease of bio-diversity. Approximately 70% of recently emerging or re-emerging infections affecting humans and animals are diseases transmissible from animals to humans, or vice versa. The situation is complex, since most zoonotic microorganisms can occur in more than one host species, and move between humans, domestic animals, wildlife and environmental matrices. In addition, antiviral and antibiotic compounds consumed by humans or domestic animals are distributed to the environment by discharge of treated sewage water, or from production facilities thereby inducing resistance development in both pathogenic and commensal bacteria and viruses. The unifying factor of the IEE network is a shared devotion and an insight of the need to study the dynamics and dispersal barriers and patterns of zoonotic, and more recently human modified pathogens. We have an insight that collaboration will provide a stronger research environment with increased power to tackle problems of concern for the society and nature we live in today.
