The Staging of Artist Myths on Facebook : A Discourse Analysis of Suffering and Personal Style (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Purpose: This study examines how discourses and narratives concerning personal style and the myth of the suffering artist are staged in different Facebook environments related to Vincent van Gogh and artistic creation.

Method: The study is conducted as a qualitative image and discourse analysis, drawing on semiotics, narrative structures and visual culture theory. The material is analysed with support from Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin, and Ernst Kris and Otto Kurz.

Results: The study shows that ideas of personal style and the suffering artist are reproduced across the different environments, but that they take on different functions depending on context. but that they take on different functions depending on context. In AI-generated and other digitally circulating image material with similar sharing patterns, mythologising and schematic expressions are prominent, while the amateur artist groups are characterised by autobiographical identification and narratives of authenticity and artistic presence.
