Abstract [en]
In this paper the United Nations and the Council of Europe’s measures towards the prohibition of torture regarding Ukraine crisis are examined and compared. Torture has been highly worrisome and reoccurring fundamental human right violation in the conflict and in this paper, this shall be looked at from the lenses of political science/international relations. The study was completed by usage of qualitative document analysis with comparative research design based on most-similar-system approach, that helped to demonstrate similarities and differences between the United Nations and the Council of Europe from realist and liberalist perspectives, first coming to realist and liberalist explanations and then comparing them to find out overlaps and differences in the two explanations. The two theories of realism and liberalism provided explanations regarding the theoretical world views on explaining the phenomenon, but also shared things in common such as the willingness to work together, but with differing motivations.
