The Lawbreaking Hero : Framing of Greta Thunberg in Aftonbladet.se (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

Greta Thunberg is one of the world’s most famous climate activists of the 21st century. Her journey as an activist started in 2018, when she sat outside the Swedish Parliament Building in Stockholm, on strike from school. She was on a mission to get Swedish MPs to act and live up to the Paris Agreement. From 2018 to 2023, thousands of articles have been written about Greta Thunberg all around the world. The purpose of this essay was to analyse the framing and agenda setting of Greta Thunberg by the Swedish online tabloid newspaper Aftonbladet.se. To achieve this, four research questions were asked about the framing and agenda setting of Greta Thunberg during the years of 2019, 2021 and 2023. A quantitative content analysis was used to go through 321 news articles on Aftonbladet.se between January and November during the three years researched for this study. The results of our investigation showed that the framing of Greta Thunberg changed each year. She was primarily framed as a hero in 2019 and for the most of 2021, when she turned 18 years old. In 2023, the framing of Greta Thunberg changed from hero to primarily being a lawbreaker. Our results also showed that Greta Thunberg could mostly be found in various articles about the climate during all three years, and that she was the most primary source used in articles, regardless of their topic.Conclusively, our study found that the framing of Greta Thunberg on Aftonbladet.se primarily focused on her as a media personality, rather than as an activist with ideas of what she wants to achieve with her movement, her demonstrations and her pleas to world leaders for action against climate change. For future research, an analysis of several news media outlets is suggested, examining a larger time period. Framing and agenda setting effects of the reporting surrounding Greta Thunberg could also be investigated.
