Towards an asexual fitness reality. : A qualitative study of the contexts in which men and women occur in the fitness and health magazines (engelsk)
Abstract [en]
Our study concerns the topic of gender in the training magazines. How and in what context men and women occur in the selected articles. The purpose with this study was to identify the stereotypes and ideal images that are conveyed through magazine-interviews with men and women. We consider this study important, since exercise, sex roles, and looks are closely associated with certain images in society. We chose to analyze this issue by selecting five magazines that focus on training, and then choosing ten articles and four pictures from the different magazines. Primarily the analysis is based on interviews with men and women from the magazines. And to reach our result we worked with methods Critical Discoure Analysis and image analysis. All this, to cover more of the context where the article was in.
We have during our time of work used earlier research about the topic and theoretical concepts first and foremost from, Anja Hirdman, Thomas Johansson and Colette Dowling.
We have come to the conclusion that our Swedish training society is well on its way to becoming more equal. The traditional stereotypes like the women who workout in group to look better and men at the gym who pump muscles are beginning to fade. Independent women who take the lead and men that exercise in group just to feel better are on the move.
