Clothes from the Viking Period and the Middle Ages : a study of the change of the clothes in relation to the development of the society (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

In this essay the development of textiles and clothes during the Viking Age and the Middle Ages is discussed. This is a period of change. The Middle Ages arrived in Scandinavia with the societal shift in the years in the vicinity of AD 1000. I have discussed clothes and textiles from the period ca 800-1500 AD. I have tried to elucidate and discuss why the changes in dress took place. The pagan traditions disappeared and the transition to Christianity lead to king's power and a deep influence of the Latin Curch in Rome. The dress codes developed via the Christian power. With this essay I want to accomplish to apply a broader view for the interpretation of the archaeological research concerning textiles and clothes from this period of time. The Viking Period had an uncontrolled nomadic influence from the east, especially things with the drawn metal wire work. The Latin Church did not allow the work. The metal wire work survived among the Sami, because the Sami was unreached by the Christian Church this time. Also the Middle Ages were deeply influenced by the Latin Church.
