Abstract [en]

Implementing of pro-environmental behaviour among individuals is of great concern towardsa more sustainable future and the reversal of climate change, at which tourism, beingresponsible for up to 15 % of the world’s GHG emissions as well as other devastatingenvironmental impacts, is an extensive pillar. Unfortunately, in terms of pro-environmentalbehaviour, research findings note barriers between what people are willing to do when they areat home and when they are on holiday. These barriers are rationalized by defence mechanismsand justifications that shows indications of a low sense of capability to perform as well as thedisengaging of moral standards to avoid the dissonance of doing wrong. These two justificationscan be related to Albert Bandura’s theories of Self-efficacy and Moral disengagement. To createa deeper understanding of what generates the barriers to pro-environmental behaviour intourism, this research aimed at, by the usage of the theoretical frameworks of Self-efficacy andMoral disengagement and through the method of in-depth interviews with environmentalactivists, go to the bottom with what prevents tourists from staying environmentally friendlywhen going on holiday. Interview material was analysed and organized through axial coding atwhich categories highlighting recurring themes emerge. Within these categories, the theories ofSelf-efficacy and Moral disengagement could be identified and explored. Assertions made fromthe result discussion conclude how self-efficacy and moral disengagement, despite theirindifferences which, based on acknowledgements in the literature review, seemed tocomplement each other, in fact work as different pillars where the reasoning behind lack of proenvironmentalbehaviour seems to be rooted in the values and expected outcomes of selfefficacyat which moral disengagement can assist in provoking further reasoning behind thebehaviour, or lack thereof. The result also further suggest how future research should focus onpro-environmentalism, as opposed to the assigned behaviour to this lifestyle. By strengtheningpeople perceived idea of what it means to be environmentalists, focus will shift from the domainto the person, and a higher sense of self-regularly efficacy will be achieved, resulting in moreactive pro-environmental engagement within different domains of life, including the domainthat is tourism.
