Reimagining Identity: The Palestinian Narrative Through Visual Culture and Design in the Context of Settler Colonialism (Engelska)
Abstract [en]
This thesis examines the confluence of culture and design within occupied Palestine, emphasising the potential role of visual representation to communicate cultural subtleties and foster genuine empathy and solidarity. The thesis explores the influence of fear on perpetuating misrepresentations and the subjugation of Palestinians while considering historical, social, and political factors that have moulded their narrative. The proposed project, referred to as "Tatreez Stories", hereafter, is an innovative digital platform that intertwines traditional Palestinian embroidery, Tatreez, with contemporary Palestinian narratives. Drawing inspiration from the storytelling aspect of Tatreez, "Tatreez Stories" empowers Palestinians to express their stories of identity, aspirations, struggle, and future, symbolised through distinctive colour palettes and traditional motifs reimagined in modern settings. The platform exhibits the Tatreez collection as a dynamic digital tapestry, aspiring to encourage authentic representation, connection, and diverse storytelling for Palestinians, while simultaneously promoting awareness and solidarity among external audiences. Utilising a human-centred design methodology, this thesis emphasises design's capacity to serve as an instrument of change, instigating cultural dialogue, empathy, and social transformation and contributing to the ongoing conversation surrounding design's role in tackling intricate social and cultural issues.
