Resilience. A protective factor for spouses to state deployed personnel? (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction State deployed personal generally have family members with them on a foreign post – spouses. The life event of being stationed abroad is usually a positive experience, but the new conditions can also lead to some stress. The spouses situation is relevant to study in relation to health. In comparison with employees the spouses must carry out an integration and find a sense of context on the assignment abroad.

Objective Investigate how resilience is affected by some known stress-related factors in spouses. Can the research strengthen the developed definition of health for spouses?

Method This study is based on an empirical quantitative study. The different scales used as measuring tools are the; Perceived Stress Scale and Brief Resilience Scale.

Results High resilience correlates with low level perceived stress. Correlation analysis showed that 42% of the variation of perceived stress is due to the variation of resilience. Attendees reporting 3,0 or lower in resilience were 31%. Time spent abroad shows a weak linear relationship with increased resilience and decreased perceived stress. Perceived stress tends to have a negative linear relationship with the number of spouses in a country. There was no significant difference in perceived stress or resilience depending on accompanying children. Survey results show that resilience was normal, and the group's perceived stress was low.

Discussion The main benefit of the study has been to study a group in society that is expected to grow with NATO accession. It appears that spouses with health and high resilience is likely to strengthen the overall capacity for resilience in overseas deployments. It is likely that the risk of government employees cancelling their assignment abroad is reduced. WHO defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Resilience is the ability to resist degrading force.

Conclusion The research strengthens the definition of health for spouses. Definition: The spouse stationed abroad is integrated in the new environment and have a sense of belonging to at least one (1) community. The person has a meaningful daily life and can manage it. Physical activity is part of everyday life.
