Bakgrund: År 2023 genomfördes 8% av alla operationer i Sverige på barn. Utförandet av anestesi på en pediatrisk population skiljer sig jämfört med vuxna till följd av den kontinuerliga förändringen i den pediatriska luftvägens anatomi och fysiologi. Handhavandet vid anestesi på pediatrisk population ställer således krav på anestesisjuksköterskor för att säkerställa en hög patientsäkerhet. Genom att studera anestesisjuksköterskors erfarenheter av pediatrisk luftvägshantering och vanliga komplikationer som kan uppstå relaterat till detta skulle kunna bidra till förbättrad kunskap inom ämnet och därmed öka patientsäkerheten.

Syfte: Syftet med studien var att undersöka anestesisjuksköterskors erfarenheter vid pediatrisk luftvägshantering.

Metod: En kvantitativ metod i form av en enkät användes för att genomföra studien. Enkäten distribuerades ut till 157 anestesisjuksköterskor på tre olika sjukhus i västra och södra Sverige. 40 anestesisjuksköterskor besvarade enkäten, vilket resulterade i en svarsfrekvens på 25%.

Resultat: Majoriteten av anestesisjuksköterskorna (57,5%) upplevde sällan eller aldrig stress i samband med pediatrisk luftvägshantering. 82,5% av anestesisjuksköterskorna upplevde att de hade tillräcklig förberedelsetid inför pediatrisk luftvägshantering. Vidare visade resultatet att anestesisjuksköterskornas erfarenhetsmässiga trygghet i att hantera komplikationer som kan uppstå vid pediatrisk luftvägshantering ökade i relation till deras erfarenhet.

Slutsats: Studien visar att erfarenhet hos anestesisjuksköterskor är en faktor som påverkar tryggheten vid pediatrisk luftvägshantering samt vanliga komplikationer som kan uppstå. Vidare kan studien ligga till grund för vidare forskning inom ämnet för att erhålla fördjupad förståelse kring ytterligare faktorer som påverkar anestesisjuksköterskors trygghet kring vanliga komplikationer vid pediatrisk luftvägshantering.

Background: In 2023, 8% of all operations in Sweden were performed on children. The performance of anesthesia in a pediatric population differs compared to adults due to the continuous change in the anatomy and physiology of the pediatric airway. The management of anesthesia in the pediatric population thus places demands on nurse anesthetists to ensure a high level of patient safety. By studying nurse anesthetists’ experiences of pediatric airway management and common complications that may arise related to airway management could contribute to improved knowledge in the subject and thereby increase patient safety.

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the experiences of nurse anesthetists in pediatric airway management.

Method: A quantitative method using a questionnaire was used to conduct the study. The questionnaire was distributed to 157 nurse anesthetists at three different hospitals in western and southern Sweden. 40 nurse anesthetists responded to the questionnaire, resulting in a response rate of 25%.

Results: The majority of the nurse anesthetists (57.5%) rarely or never experienced stress in connection with pediatric airway management. 82.5% of the nurse anesthetists felt that they had sufficient preparation time for pediatric airway management. Furthermore, the results showed that the nurse anesthetists’ experiential confidence in managing complications that may occur during pediatric airway management increased in relation to their experience.

Conclusion: The study shows that experience among nurse anesthetists is a factor that affects the safety of pediatric airway management and common complications that may arise. Furthermore, the study can form the basis for further research in the subject to gain a deeper understanding of additional factors that affect nurse anesthetists' safety regarding common complications in pediatric airway management.
