Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This work analyzes the performance piece Please drink me by Pernilla Eskilsson. Please drink me was experienced at a live performance and the investigation is made from memorandum notes, photo documentation and video documentation. The analysis is done by using social semiotic theory and method according to Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen, and by using performance theory and analysis according to Erika Fischer-Lichte. The examination shows that social semiotics offer a possibility to analyze performance art by seeing it as a multimodal sign creating process, where resources with meaning potential can be interpreted. The study also highlights how performance theory can explain performance art as a performative event where embodied presence and transformative experiences contribute to the creation of significance. One of the conclusions is that both methods are relevant to produce comprehension for the complex nature of performance art.
