How is the moral compass doing? : A qualitative content analysis of Aftonbladet's media reporting on the school shooting in Örebro (English)
Abstract [en]

On the 4th of February 2025, seven women and three men were killed in a school shooting at Campus Risbergska in Örebro. The school shooting led to massive media coverage, highlighting the crucial role of news media in society and the importance of responsible and accurate reporting. Shortly after the event, the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet published a short notice that contained an interview with the potential perpetrators father, before he had been contacted by the police that his son was involved. This publication attracted significant public attention and raised questions regarding journalistic ethics in news reporting.

This thesis aims to examine how Aftonbladet handled and portrayed the school shooting at Campus Risbergska in Örebro. The study used a qualitative content analysis of fifteen articles in Aftonbladet's printed press and was based on framing theory and crisis journalism as theoretical framework. Through a solid review of the empirical material four themes were identified and used as the basis for the analysis.

The study addresses three research questions: which possible ethical dilemmas exist in Aftonbladet's reporting on the school shooting, how Aftonbladet balanced the public interest and privacy protection, and how Aftonbladet portrays the perpetrator in the reporting.

The result of this study showed that several articles from Aftonbladet did not fully adhere to the ethical guidelines required in Swedish journalism. The results also showed that interviews with relatives of victims had been accrued, shortly after the shooting, which may involve intrusion of individuals in mourning. Furthermore the thesis could also see resemblance with the framing of the perpetrator, based on previous studies on how the media portrayed the perpetrator of similar events.

The thesis contribute to a deeper understanding for how ethical dilemmas may occur in crisis reporting, and offers insights into how journalists should navigate similar situations in the future.
