Abstract [en]
In Danish culture, light is an important part of everyday life and social interaction. This study examines Poul Henningsen`s PH 5 lamp in relation to the concept of hygge, understood as a culturally embedded practice associated with comfort, warmth and social togetherness. The study examines how the lamp’s form and light contribute to atmosphere and cultural meaning in a domestic context. Using a qualitative, theory-driven approach, the analysis combines formal observation, semiotic analysis, and theories of hygge and atmosphere. The results show that the PH 5’s layered shade system produces a soft, glare-free light aligned with modernist principles of function and simplicity, while also shaping a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Through this interaction of functional design and atmospheric effect, the lamp supports everyday practices of social interaction and spatial orientation in the home. The study concludes that the PH 5 functions not only as a lighting object, but as a culturally meaningful element that contributes to the experience and organization of everyday life within Danish design culture.
