To be a Man and a Victim : A Study About Masculinity and Crime Victimization in Police Interrogations (English)
Abstract [en]
This study explores the experiences of men as victims of robbery and the potential masculinity that rests on the victim narrative during police interrogations. Previous research on crime victimization within males can be seen as less investigated than women. The purpose of this study is therefore to address this gap by investigating how male victims talk about their experiences in interrogations and how this connects to societal conceptions of masculinity.
The study uses a qualitative approach, analyzing seven investigation reports of cases within robbery. A thematic analysis was then conducted to identify patterns in how the victims described their experiences, guided by theories with attention to norms of masculinity and victimhood.
The findings indicate that men often downplay their injuries and avoid seeking help to maintain a masculine self-image. Bystanders also tend to offer limited assistance, which connects to the societal expectations that men should be able to handle situations independently. Results also show how men who choose to practice resistance during the robbery can be explained by masculinity norms. The study highlights how gender norms shape the expression of victimhood and provides insight into the social dynamics that influence men’s experiences as victims of crime.
