Internationalization of Digital Platform Firms: An African Emerging Markets Perspective

Abstract [en]

The rise of digital platform firms has redefined international business by introducing new forms of cross-border interaction, value creation, and business ecosystem engagement. Yet, much of the existing literature has focused on developed markets, leaving the dynamics of platform internationalization in emerging markets comparatively underexplored. This dissertation examines how digital platform firms from African emerging markets internationalize, emphasizing the contextual realities that shape their strategies, ecosystem dynamics, and governance mechanisms.

Adopting a qualitative multiple-case study of African-founded digital platforms complemented by a systematic literature review, this compilation thesis examines how platforms build and orchestrate ecosystems, govern across borders, and navigate fragmented institutional environments. The findings reveal three interconnected processes. First, in resource constrained African markets, platforms must build ecosystems before ecosystem orchestration becomes possible. Second, ecosystem governance operates through multi-modal mechanisms such as digital, physical, relational, and community-based, that evolve from partner-led to platform-led structures. Third, platforms act as institutional intermediaries, transforming institutional voids into sources of competitive advantage by intermediating regulatory, financial, market information, labor, and data governance functions, while facilitating institutional translation across borders.

Together, the studies offer a comprehensive view of digital platform internationalization from an African emerging markets perspective, extending international business, digital ecosystems, platform governance, and institutional theories. Specifically, this research contributes to internationalization strategy literature by introducing the “community-entry” strategy as a novel mode of foreign market entry and emphasizing the importance of adaptation as a condition of viability in international markets. It extends institutional theory by providing a refined understanding of how institutional voids are not just constraints, but arenas for competitive advantage and strategic innovation, through which digital platform firms provide institutional intermediation and translation functions. Finally, it extends ecosystem and platform literature by distinguishing ecosystem building from orchestration, expanding actor typologies to include semiformal and informal actors, and introducing multi-modal governance. The integrated Institutional Navigation Framework (INF) synthesizes these contributions, offering a conceptual model for understanding digital platform internationalization in African markets contexts. The findings also offer practical insights for managers, policymakers, and investors operating in or engaging with African emerging markets.

Framväxten av digitala plattformsföretag har omdefinierat internationellt företagande genom att introducera nya former av gränsöverskridande interaktioner, värdeskapande och engagemang inom affärsekosystem. En stor del av den befintliga litteraturen har emellertid fokuserat på kontexten kring mogna marknader, medan dynamiken kring plattformars internationalisering på tillväxtmarknader har varit jämförelsevis mindre utforskad. Denna sammanläggningsavhandling undersöker hur digitala plattformsföretag från afrikanska tillväxtmarknader internationaliseras, med särskilt fokus på de kontextuella förutsättningar som formar deras strategier, ekosystemdynamik och styrningsmekanismer.

Med utgångspunkt i en kvalitativ flerfallsstudie av digitala plattformsföretag grundade i Afrika, kompletterad med en systematisk litteraturöversikt, analyserar denna avhandling hur plattformar bygger upp och orkestrerar ekosystem, utövar styrning över landsgränser samt navigerar i fragmenterade institutionella miljöer. Resultaten påvisar tre sammanlänkade processer. För det första behöver plattformar på resursbegränsade afrikanska marknader bygga upp ekosystem innan orkestrering av dessa blir möjlig. För det andra bedrivs styrning av ekosystem genom multimodala mekanismer, såsom digitala, fysiska, relationella och gemenskapsbaserade, vilka utvecklas från gemenskapsledda till plattformsledda strukturer. För det tredje fungerar plattformar som institutionella intermediärer genom att omvandla institutionella tomrum till källor för konkurrensfördelar, bland annat genom att de intermedierar funktioner för reglering, finansiering, marknadsinformation, arbetskraft och datastyrning, samt genom att möjliggöra institutionell översättning över landsgränser.

Sammantaget ger avhandlingens studier en övergripande bild av digitala plattformars internationalisering från perspektivet av framväxande afrikanska marknader, och bidrar till att vidareutveckla teorier inom internationellt företagande, digitala ekosystem, plattformsstyrning och institutionell teori. Mer specifikt bidrar avhandlingen till litteraturen kring internationaliseringsstrategi genom att introducera ”community-entry”-strategin som ett nytt sätt att träda in på utländska marknader, samt genom att betona betydelsen av anpassning som ett villkor för livskraft på internationella marknader. Avhandlingen vidareutvecklar även institutionell teori genom att erbjuda en förfinad förståelse av hur institutionella tomrum inte enbart utgör begränsningar utan också arenor för konkurrensfördelar och strategisk innovation, varigenom vilka digitala plattformsföretag tillhandahåller institutionell intermediering och översättningsfunktioner. Slutligen utvecklar avhandlingen ekosystem- och plattformsforskningen genom att särskilja ekosystembyggande från orkestrering, utvidga aktörstypologier till att omfatta semiformella och informella aktörer samt att introducera begreppet multimodal styrning. Det integrerade ramverket ”Institutional Navigation Framework” (INF) syntetiserar dessa bidrag och erbjuder en konceptuell modell för att förstå digitala plattformars internationalisering i framväxande afrikanska marknadskontexter. Resultaten ger även praktiska insikter för chefer, beslutsfattare och investerare som verkar på eller engagerar sig i afrikanska tillväxtmarknader.

Abstract [en]

Over the years, digital platforms have been a focus for international business scholars, especially those who see them as bringing nuances not seen in other firm types. Extensive reviews focusing on the internationalization of digital platforms are very few. There is no comprehensive review focusing on the factors influencing the internationalization of digital platforms. This paper critically reviews studies on the internationalization of digital platforms to identify factors affecting their internationalization. It also aims to identify research gaps and prepare future research agendas. A systematic literature review method guided by the TCCM approach was used for this review. The findings indicate that the category (proactive or reactive) of digital platforms, the ecosystem they belong to, and the region of operation are a starting point to determine the factors that influence internationalization. Secondly, the business model and, subsequently, the type of digital platform firm are crucial in understanding the internationalization dynamics of the firms. Thirdly, there are several under-explored research areas that provide potential for theory development and extension.
