Abstract [sv]

Denna studie undersöker hur Basic Safety- utbildningen förbereder sjömän för de mentala och psykologiska utmaningar som kan uppstå i nödsituationer. Studien genomfördes med en kvalitativ ansats och baseras på semistrukturerade intervjuer med både yrkesverksamma sjömän och studenter från Sjöfartshögskolan i Kalmar. Det empiriska materialet analyserades med hjälp av tematisk analys för att identifiera återkommande mönster och upplevelser. Resultaten visar att Basic Safety- utbildningen bidrar till en grundläggande känsla av trygghet, främst genom praktiska moment såsom brand- och säkerhetsövningar. Samtidigt framkommer tydligt brister i den psykologiska förberedelsen. Respondenterna beskriver att de i verkliga nödsituationer upplever starka stressreaktioner, särskilt i roller nära händelsens centrum, samt att de saknar konkreta mentala verktyg för att hantera dessa situationer. Ledarskap och tydlig kommunikation lyfts fram som avgörande faktorer, medan stöd efter kritiska händelser, exempelvis debriefing, ofta upplevs otillräckligt eller frånvarande. Studien indikerar att Basic Safety-utbildningen behöver utvecklas för att bättre möta de mentala krav som ställs i praktiken. Genom att integrera psykologiska aspekter, såsom stresshantering och efterföljande stödinsatser, kan sjömäns handlingsförmåga och säkerhet i nödsituationer stärkas.

Abstract [en]

This study investigates how Basic safety-education prepares seamen for the mental and physical challenges they may face in emergency situations. The study was conducted with a qualitative approach and is based on semi-structured interviews with both industry active seafarers and students at Kalmar Maritime University. The empirical material was analyzed using thematic analysis in order to identify recurring patterns and experiences. The results show that the Basic safety-education contributes to a basic feeling of safety, mainly through practical elements like fire and safety exercises. At the same time there are clear shortcomings in psychological preparation. The respondents describe that in real emergencies they experience strong stress reactions, especially in roles near the situation’s center, and also that they lack concrete mental tools to handle these situations. Leadership and clear communication are raised as decisive factors, while support after critical situations, for example debriefings, often feel insufficient or missing. The study indicated that the Basic safety-education needs to evolve to better meet the mental demands that are set in practicality. By integrating psychological aspects, like stress handling and the following support efforts, seafarer’s safety and their ability to act in emergencies can be strengthened.
