Abstract [sv]

Denna studie undersöker hur mmWave-baserad närvarodetektering kan användas i hyttmiljöer på passagerarfartyg som stöd för snabb lokalisering av personer vid nödsituationer ombord. Bakgrunden är att manuella genomsökningar av bostadshytter är både tids- och resurskrävande. Fartygsmiljön ställer dessutom särskilda krav på tekniska system, eftersom hytter kan präglas av trånga utrymmen, reflekterande ytor och återkommande vibrationer. Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur en mmWave-baserad sensorenhet, dfRobot SEN0557 kopplad till en Arduino Uno Q, fungerar för persondetektion i hyttmiljö ombord samt att utvärdera hur vibrationer påverkar systemets prestanda. Studien genomfördes som ett kvantitativt fältexperiment ombord på M/S Calmare Nyckel. Sensorn testades i en bostadshytt genom standardiserade scenarier med rörelse respektive minimal rörelse. Systemets prestanda bedömdes utifrån kvantitativa utfallsmått i form av detektionsgrad, tid till första detektion, bortfall och falsklarm. Vibrationer undersöktes genom en kontrollerad uppställning med vibrationsplatta. Resultaten visade att sensorn fungerade betydligt bättre utan vibrationer än vid vibrationstest, där falskekon och instabila mätvärden uppstod. Studien visar därmed att mmWave-teknik har potential som stöd för närvarodetektering i hyttmiljö, men också att vibrationer utgör en tydlig begränsning för systemets stabilitet och tillförlitlighet. Slutsatsen är att tekniken kan vara relevant som kompletterande stöd i säkerhetsarbetet ombord, men att vidare utveckling krävs innan den kan användas robust i verklig maritim drift. 

Abstract [en]

This study examines how mmWave-based presence detection can be applied in cabin environments on passenger ships as a means of supporting the rapid localization of persons during onboard emergencies. The study is based on the premise that manual searches of accommodation cabins are both time- and resource-intensive. In addition, the shipboard environment imposes specific demands on technical systems, as cabins may be characterized by confined spaces, reflective surfaces, and recurring vibrations. The aim of the study is to investigate how an mmWave-based sensor unit, the DFRobot SEN0557 connected to an Arduino Uno Q, performs in detecting human presence in an onboard cabin environment, and to evaluate how vibrations affect the system’s performance. The study was conducted as a quantitative field experiment onboard M/S Calmare Nyckel. The sensor was tested in an accommodation cabin using standardized scenarios involving movement and minimal movement. System performance was assessed through quantitative outcome measures, including detection rate, time to first detection, dropouts, and false alarms. Vibrations were examined using a controlled setup with a vibration plate. The results showed that the sensor performed considerably better without vibrations than during vibration testing, where false echoes and unstable measurement values occurred. The study therefore indicates that mmWave technology has potential as a support tool for presence detection in cabin environments, while also showing that vibrations constitute a clear limitation to system stability and reliability. The conclusion is that the technology may be relevant as a complementary support tool in onboard safety work, but further development is required before it can be used robustly in real maritime operating conditions.
