You Don't Need to Talk to be Social : Silent bookclub - An initiative that straddles the line beetween health promotion and the promotion of reading in public libraries. (English)
Abstract [en]
This study examines how public librarians role health- promoting actors take shape through the reading promoting activity known as Silent book club. Based on qualitative,semi-structured interviews with public librarians and field observations, the study analyses how the activity is constructed, justifield and understood in relation to bothreading promotion and health promotion work. The results show that the silent book club is characterized by low thresholds for participation, with a non-demanding and flexible format in which participants themselves choose the litterature and the degree of social interaction. By applying social capital as a theoretical lense, the study suggests that thelibrary can function as an inclusive meeting place that can foster social community, reduce loneliness and offer respite in a performance-oriented society. Reading emerges both as an individual activity with potential well-being effects and as part of social contexts where meaning is created through human interaction. At the same time, it emerges that librarians often do not explicitly define their work as health-promoting, even though the activities may in practice have such effects.
