Overlap explores how a city map can become a tool for encouraging spon-

taneous connection between strangers. Through visual communication

the project examines how everyday urban spaces can support more

open and meaningful social interactions. By deconstructing the fa-

miliar format of the city map, I aim to transform it from a simple

tool for navigation, into a medium for conversation and human con-

tact. The project is grounded on research, testing, and reflection

on how people approach new social situations, and how design can

make these moments feel a bit more easier.

As a visual communicator, I want to challenge the idea that maps

only guide movement through a city. Instead, I use maps to guide

people toward each other. Ultimately, the thesis argues that de-

sign can do more than convey information: it can shape behavior,

support social engagement, and strengthen the experience of urban

life through meaningful human connection.
