Abstract [en]
The analysis shows that future generations are widely invoked as an important concern, but are rarely defined as concrete groups with specific needs, rights or expectations. Instead, responsibility for the future is expressed indirectly through established practices such as legal protection, documentation, digitisation, public interpretation and local knowledge transmission. The study identifies three main future-oriented logics within the cultural heritage sector: a protected future, mainly associated with county administrative boards; a produced future, mainly associated with museums; and a lived future, mainly associated with civil society actors. These logics reflect different institutional roles, values and temporal frameworks. While county administrative boards tend to frame the future in terms of risk, protection and irreversible loss, museums emphasise knowledge, accessibility and interpretation. Local heritage associations, in turn, connect the future to continuity, place-based identity and intergenerational transmission. The thesis argues that cultural heritage management should not be understood as working towards a single future, but as a field in which different futures are continuously negotiated. The study contributes empirical evidence to heritage futures research and highlights the need for clearer discussions about how future generations are imagined, whose values are prioritised, and how long-term responsibility can be translated into practice within Swedish cultural heritage management.
