Abstract [sv]
Studien omfattade 14 tandvårdskliniker i Sverige.
Abstract [en]
Mercury (Hg) is a global environmental pollutant with high toxicity and a strong tendency to bioaccumulate in food chains. Despite extensive regulations, mercury is still present in dental wastewater as a result of historical dental amalgam fillings. Conventional amalgam separators are primarily designed to remove particulate-bound mercury but have a limited capacity to capture dissolved mercury species. To reduce these emissions, a complementary treatment technology based on electrochemical ion separation has been developed.
The aim of this study was to investigate how mercury concentrations in grab samples collected directly downstream of dental clinic separators changed following the installation of Atium’s ion separation units. The study included 14 dental clinics in Sweden. Mercury concentrations from the last measurement before installation were compared with concentrations measured after installation.
The results showed lower mercury concentrations after installation at 10 of the 14 clinics, while four clinics exhibited higher concentrations. The mean concentration across all clinics decreased from 255,6 µg/L at the last measurement before installation to 138,3 µg/L after installation, corresponding to a reduction of 45,9%. Historical measurements also revealed considerable variation between sampling occasions and a long-term downward trend during the period 2021–2026.
The strength of the study was that it was conducted under normal operating conditions at dental clinics and used the same type of grab sampling as employed in the clinics’ routine monitoring of amalgam separators. The historical measurement series enabled comparisons over time and the identification of clinics with recurring elevated mercury concentrations. However, real-world operating conditions mean that mercury concentrations are influenced by several factors, including clinic workload, the occurrence of amalgam fillings among patients, historical mercury contamination within wastewater systems, and technical differences between clinics. As grab samples only reflect conditions at the specific time of sampling, the results should be interpreted with some caution.
Further studies involving a larger number of clinics, repeated sampling, downstream composite sampling, measurements of the amount of mercury captured by Atium's ion separation units, and analyses of different mercury fractions are needed to better assess the effect of ion separation units on mercury concentrations in the vacuum systems of the studied dental clinics.
