Data that guides attention (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Visualization of performance measures has taken on a more central role in organizations' operational management in step with digitalization and the development of "business intelligence". Through dashboards, reports and other visual tools, large amounts of data can be made more accessible and complex information understandable. Previous research shows that visualizations are not neutral but affect how information is perceived, interpreted and used in decision-making. This means that there is a need to analyze the role of visualization beyond its function as a purely technical support in decision-making processes.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate how visualization of performance measures affects decision-making by directing attention and shaping interpretation processes in organizations.

Method: The study is conducted with a qualitative research approach and is based on semi-structured interviews with respondents from Swedish manufacturing companies. Empirical material has been collected through both interviews and visualizations. The analysis has been conducted thematically based on a theoretical framework that integrates attentional control, interpretation processes and decision-making.

Conclusion: The result shows that visualizations influence decision-making by directing organizational attention to specific performance measures and shaping how these are interpreted in interaction. The visualizations thus function as control artifacts rather than neutral tools. The effect depends on the interaction between visual design, user experiences and the organizational context. The study shows that visualizations can both support and distort decision-making depending on how they are used and designed.
