If you are going to follow someone, follow Jesus : A qualitative content analysis of Swedish TikTok creators' portrayal of Christianity (English)
Abstract [en]

This study examines how Christianity is portrayed in Swedish-language TikTok content from Swedish Christian creators and how these framings are legitimized through claims to religious authority and different legitimization strategies. The empirical material consists of 35 videos from published in 2025 from 7 Swedish TikTok accounts. The analysis is conducted as a thematic qualitative content analysis focusing on the verbal content of the videos. The results are discussed with support from Robert Entman's framing theory and Bruce Lincoln's critique of ideology. The study shows that Christianity in the empirical material is repeatedly portrayed as everyday guidance where the sender highlights an alleged need or lack in the receiver, connects it to the relationship with Jesus/God and leads the receiver toward a concrete action in the form of practice or stance. The framing is often organized as a chain of problem formulation, diagnose causes, moral evaluation and recommendation for action. Legitimization in the material varies between three sender positions. General senders emphasize personal experience, priestly senders emphasize office and pastoral context, and free church senders emphasize biblical authority and truth claims. In summary, the study shows how a common basic framework can be made binding in different ways.
