AI-literacy and new potential digital divides : A qualitative study regarding information seeking with generative AI among young adults (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Traditionally, digital exclusion, or digital divide, has been about lack of access to technology, and in later waves, about lack of knowledge and experience. With the emergence of a completely new type of technology, generative artificial intelligence, there is a risk that new types of digital divides will emerge. Previous research has examined how the development of AI affects already vulnerable groups, often by measuring participants’ AI literacy, but there is a lack of research on whether an AI divide can affect digitally literate groups such as young adults.

The ongoing development of generative AI may therefore contribute with unexpected consequences. The purpose of this study is to examine the obstacles and opportunities that young adults may encounter when it comes to seeking information with generative AI. This is done to compare them with groups that have traditionally been affected by digital exclusion, in order to explore whether young adults could be affected by an emerging possible AI divide.

Interviews and observations are used to understand how young adults experience information search with generative AI and their attitudes and opinions about the emergence of this new technology. A combination of different measurement scales for AI literacy is also used to estimate the informants' knowledge and skills.

The results show that there was variation in the informants' level of AI literacy. Through thematic analysis, five central themes were also identified around the informants' perspectives on generative AI. Overall, no major risk of young adults being negatively affected by a new digital exclusion could be discerned. What seems to have the greatest impact on young adults' use and attitude towards generative AI is ethical issues and concerns.
