Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In June 2025 a new EU directive was put in effect, the European Accessibility Act, with the purpose of putting higher demands on European companies to follow digital accessibility guidelines, especially websites along with e-commerce platforms to fulfill guidelines made from the international standard of WCAG 2.1. However, the research on Swedish e-commerce after the directive’s passing is limited. This study investigates how well a few of the biggest e-commerce websites follow the accessibility guidelines, through automatic and manual testing while also analysing how users with disabilities experience Swedish e-commerce and what role digital shopping has in their lives.

The study performed an accessibility check of five Swedish e-commerce platforms (Boozt, Apotea, Ellos, Haypp and Lyko), where each respective homepage and two randomly chosen product sites were tested. The manual check was performed with support from the Agency for Digital Government’s manual while the automatic check was done through the testing tool WAVE (Web Accessibility Evaluation Tools). Following these checks, an interview study was done that researched the role of digital shopping, experiences in shopping after EAA and the users’ experienced accessibility problems along with their assistive tools. Through a goal-driven snowball selection, 7 participants were selected from Swedish local and district associations active within the disability movement. All respondents have some form of disability and use assistive tools or unique settings while shopping online.

The results showed that none of the examined websites reached full accessibility according to the manual. The e-commerce platforms showed different ranges of accessibility problems where all were noted to have contrast errors and lack of alternative texts. These errors run a bigger risk of impacting the experience of users with impaired vision, which is supported by the respondents’ spoken experience. Lacking accessibility testing combined with assistive tools is given in the study, with support from earlier research, as a reason for accessibility problems.

The results of the interview study show that respondents do not experience Swedish e-commerce as accessible enough. The analysis of the respondents’ spoken experience found that the accessibility problems vary according to the type and severity of the mentioned accessibility. In the best cases the noted problems were mere irritations while in the worst cases the user risked getting hindered or fully stopped from continuing to independently carry out their digital needs. The respondents pointed out a need for education both of assistive tools amongst users and also for the work in disability among web developers, this in order to make Swedish e-commerce more accessible for everyone.

This explorative study includes a limited look into the Swedish e-commerce market. Hence, further research is needed in a bigger scope or in the form of a longitudinal study to confirm the results brought forth in this study.
