Abstract [en]

A study of Protestant missionaries and their perception of local Savunese culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, departing from the rich letter material found in Utrecht Archief. The paper discusses the interesting dichotomy between sharp-eyed observation of cultural features in Savu society, and cases where the writers were led astray by cultural prejudices and colonial discourses of authority.
