Swedish integration policy : Discourse analysis of the Swedish integration policy (English)
Abstract [en]
The Swedish integration policy has in times of mass immigration to Europe, been by some people described as open and liberal as well as a good example, compared to the integration policies of other European countries. Since migrant integration has turned into a topic that is important both on the national and EU’s agenda, it was interesting to study how the discourse around the Swedish integration policy looks like and how it is standing in relation to supranational EU guidelines. Thus, the purpose of the thesis was to clarify how Swedish integration policy corresponds with a multicultural and liberal integration policy and how well it goes in line with EU guidelines. To fulfil the purpose, a number of selected Government bills were studied through the scope of discourse analysis to identify the characteristics of the Swedish integration policy in terms of its openness and liberal views. The results revealed that although the Swedish integration policy has some features from liberal and multicultural integration, it is not truthful to place it entirely into the frames of these theories. It was also clear that the Swedish integration policy has its prioritised focus areas within the EU guidelines.
