Abstract [en]
The aim of the study is to investigate what motivates multilingual students toleisure read fiction in Swedish. The aim is also to investigate why somestudents choose not to read fiction in Swedish. Can factors like exposure tobooks, attitudes in the environment, reading ability, competence, competitionto other entertainment or book selection guide affect the reading? This wasinvestigated using questionnaires and interviews to investigate this. Insummary, the most common factors affecting leisure time reading ofmultilingual students in Swedish are competence and social factors. It has beenfound that many students read in Swedish because it is easier to understand.Students who prefer to read their best language other than Swedish usually doit to socialize with relatives, friends and family. The language is somethingthat the students want to maintain and preserve. The language can be a key tosolidarity.
