The interactive digital museum : A qualitative study of how museums in Sweden adapt digitally and interactively to the public during the covid-pandemic to appear relevant in their time (English)
Abstract [en]

The study examines how a state national museum and a county museum deal with digitally adapting their base and temporary exhibitions during the covid pandemic. The museums used in this study are Kulturparken Småland and Världskulturmuseet in Gothenburg. This study is a qualitative comparative analysis based on interviews with museum employees with their knowledge on digital transmission, and previous research in this field. This study examines the idea of digital models to be used in museum exhibitions, as visual touch and network-based platforms. This interaction between the physical and technology is a form of artistic expression that needs an audience to be a part of the exhibition. What became clear with the results of the study was that the development process at both Världskulturmuseet and Kulturparken Småland has begun to use more digital models and social media to interact with the community. The scientifically reviewed texts in the study show that digitization in museums is used in very different ways. Since we live in a time where technological advancements and social media are constantly changing. The results of the study showed that covid has affected the interviewees’ workplaces on a big scale. Mostly because the pandemic came very suddenly, which meant that Världskulturmuseerna had to reorganize certain programs. Furthermore, although Kulturparken Småland already had begun developing with digital elements, the pandemic accelerated some digital additions such as a podcast. As there were covid restrictions. The study provided insight into what the purposes were of digitizing museums and it looked different for everyone. It mostly depended on, for example, which target audience one has the museums budget, supply and the digital demand asked from both the board of directors and the community.
